Chat with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session. I am Eric. We've got an hour to ask and answer questions so, thanks for showing up and let's have some fun. Here we go!

Malik (Tucson, AZ)

EK, I have been asking about this for a while and still not one nibble... In a 10 team PPR league, can keep only two between Megatron/Brees/Stafford/Mathews. Have also been offered CJ2k for Megatron. There's been a lot of buzz about Mathews and CJ2k so far. Who should I keep? Does the CJ2k offer have any relevance? Thank you.

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

Wow. Well, I'd keep the two non-QBs. Yeah, Brees and Stafford are awesome, and in that order, but still, the top WR and a top-5 RB. Can't part with them. And as for Chris Johnson, depends on your opinion. I have them ranked next to each other.

george (NY)

What odds do you give that DMC can stay healthy this year? It has happened with injury prone RBs before Fred Taylor comes to mind.

Eric Karabell
  (3:02 PM)

I blogged about that today and talked Mike Goodson! I'd like to be optimistic that Darren McFadden plays 16 games, but there is just no evidence whatsoever. So I'll take the under on say 13 games.

fred (oskaloosa)

pick a side in a keeper... a) trout, longoria, machado, bundy b) j upton, miggy cabrera, cole, h ramirez

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

Wow again. I'd take the non-Trout side, however. There are no guarantees with Machado and Bundy. On the Upton side all four seem relatively safe and productive, assuming that you think Upton can get back to prior form, which I do.

Bryce Harper (Washington, DC)

Will I ever return to my production from earlier this season or should I be traded ASAP?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

We discussed his Rookie of the Year candidacy on today's Baseball Today podcast. Statistically he's fine, but really overrated. OPS is average, he's not hitting for power. His name is probably worth more than any other rookie not named Trout today, so see what you can get.

Eric (Minnesota)

Who do you prefer in dynasty PPR leagues: Cook, Tamme or Rudolf?

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

I'd call all three sleepers for this season, but Cook is the most accomplished of them. Tamme's production is tied to QB. Cook's is not.

Chase (NY)

What are you thoughts on CJ Wilson ROS? Trade him now or hold?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

Perhaps the Josh Hamilton version of a pitcher whose season numbers do not match the recent trend. I don't see how you can get market value for him based on how he's done lately. Keep him.

Need of Speed (Maryland)

D.Gordon to return eventually! For playoffs in NL only do you think he plays enough to add and I would have to drop C.Young(ariz) or Carlos Lee? Thoughts

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

I think he's back in the next few weeks and yes, both guys you could drop will not be missed. Remember when Young fans thought he'd hit .300 this season? Ha! Gordon won't either but he can run.

Mark (NY)

Eric, Hughes or Minor for the ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

Do I have to pick one? I'd go Minor. I know Hughes has been fine but man, both guys are so homer prone. I trust the NL guy more.

Jamaal lewis (La)

What do you think of Charles. Is it necessary to draft Hillis if you draft Charles? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

Not at all. In fact, handcuffing is such an overrated tactic in this case because each RB will play so much. It's not like Peterson and Gerhart, where it's likely to be 80-20 on touches. In KC it might really be split. And if you own both guys you'll constantly wonder which one to play, assuming both are healthy and productive, which I expect they will be.

W (Detroit)

Granted, everyone's always looking for the next hot rookie, but is Marte rosterable in a 10-teamer?

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

I don't think so. I expect he will struggle to hit .250, frankly.

Don Von Handburger (Boston, MA)

Should I even roster Jairo Garcia at this point?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

He's talking about Giants closer Santiago Casilla, by the way. That's his "old" name. Yes, I think he can be closing soon, but he had a blister problem which hurt his effectiveness.

Rich (Solvay, NY)

Hi EK,6 x 6 full keeper league...Lawrie or Justin Upton? Thanks.

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Yikes. Have to say Upton still. Lawrie has been a moderate disappointment, but is young and plays 3B. But Upton's upside remains immense.

detroit backfield (miami, fl)

hey eric, do you think anybody in my backfield is worth a dang come the draft?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Rumor has it Kevin Smith is running with the first team for the Lions. I'd say Jahvid Best has to be drafted, but I wouldn't count on him. I could see Smith and Leshoure having relevance.

Norm (Seattle)

Big Papi and Timmy are on the waiver wire. Either worth it ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Ortiz and Lincecum? Yes, both should be owned in all leagues.

Jason (Bmore)

Do you believe Issac Redman is good enough to be an RB2 in a 12 team league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

No, I do not. And Mendenhall might miss the first 6 weeks, but he'll absolutely be in play after that. And that's IF he misses the 6 weeks. Could be ready in Sept.

Kyle (NY)

Keeper league: Swapped Miley, Addison Reed and Lincecum for Hosmer and Domonic Brown -- fair trade?

Eric Karabell
  (3:13 PM)

In theory, yes. Of course yes. But now we all have to at least have doubts about Hosmer. And Brown is no sure thing, either, though I have enjoyed his play the past week.

Malik (Tucson, AZ)

Time give up on Justin Upton as a keeper? He is starting to remind me of his brother.

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Not even close. And really, it could be a lot worse. J Up is on pace for .274, 14 HR and 18 steals? We'll take that. It's not 30 and 20, but still, look at his brother.

Jason (Bmore)

Which wr would you feel safer drafting, Dez Bryant or AJ Green?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

Definitely Green. I have concerns about Dez off the field.

Timmy (Charleston, SC)

your thoughts on Ben Sheets ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

He's been surprising, that's for sure, and he's feasted on NL East offenses, but he's gonna keep seeing those below average offenses, too. Some regression coming but a final ERA around 3, sure.

Allen Craig (St. Louis)

Am I a better keeper at 1B for next season than Eric Hosmer?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

No, I can't go there yet, and will continue to recommend Hosmer. Again, it could be a lot worse. Some power, some speed. Still very young.

Steve (NC)

Hey EK, so thinking more and more about who Im going to keep in fantasy football has me more and more uncertain. I get to keep 2 out of Demarco, Jamaal Cahrles, Steven jackson, Fred Jackson, Peyton Manning, and Matt Ryan. I think Demarco and Jamaal would be the obvious, but both split time? And have been hearing Steven Jackson is looking leaned out and quick.. HELP!

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

They both split time but they're also younger than Jackson and he could split time as well. No guarantees with any of these guys. I'd keep Charles and Murray.

John (Detroit)

Where do draft Rashard Jennings?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

I'm pretty sure Jones-Drew will start in Week 1 for the Jaguars. Take Jennings late, if at all.

Larry (The District)

CarGo hasnt been doing much lately... Am I crazy for thinking of trading him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

All road games for the Rockies this week ... and then ALL home games next week. You might regret moving him.

Eric (Nashville)

Yo EK, what do ya think about Bradshaw

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

He should top 1,100 yards and be a relatively safe late RB2, but he'll share touches with the rookie Wilson. I'm not concerned with his health.

Andrew Cashner (DL for Now)

Eric would you see me as a decent add for an NL only 10 team roster when I return or am I going to be a risky option every time I pitch?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

It's tough to rely on Cashner but I've got him stashed on a few teams in case he runs off some crazy strikeout stretch, or becomes Mike Fiers. It could happen. Or he gets hurt in first outing. Total wild card.

Kyle (EL)

Any news on Bonifacio's hand?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Latest I saw was he could return in a few weeks, which would be nice since he could still lead the league in steals despite all the missed time.

Steve (Mpls)

Chris Medlen - Will he stick in the ATL rotation when Hanson returns? Medlen looks very solid.

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

I think he has to pitch well, and if he does then yes, the Braves would move Minor or create an opening.

Kyle (NY)

Trying to trade Billy Butler -- at the peak of his value -- but no takers. Is he *that* underrated and/or under-appreciated? (No one respects alliteration.)

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

I respect it and I don't see why Butler would be hard to deal. Has 1B eligibility now and a career high in home runs that isn't fluky. Might never hit 35 home runs, but he always hits for average. He's safe.

Tim (St. Paul)

I picked up Mike Olt needing a corner infield player. Do you see him getting any increased ABs? How good is he?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

He's good but I also think the Rangers wanted to get Michael Young going, or motivated. I wouldn't expect much from Olt, frankly.

Kyle (MA)

Lawrie has definitely disappointed me, that's for sure. Lawrie or Youk ROS? Youk/Kinsler for Uggla/Wright, which side you got? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

Again, Lawrie is a bit like Upton. It's not that bad. Could be MUCH worse. Nine HR and 13 steals, good batting average. Just not a monster statistically. Take Lawrie over Youk. And the Youk/Kinsler side.

Joe (Bronx, NY)

What is Dempster's value after the trade?

Eric Karabell
  (3:24 PM)

I would move him before his next outing, personally. I see bad things ahead and he gave everyone a nice outing last night. There was major regression coming, and it's here.

Tom (DC)

Credit where due - you've taken a lot of crap for Kipnis lately, now it's time to take a bow.

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Nature of the beast here, we get ripped when we say something negative, as I did a month ago on selling high on Kipnis, even if we believe it and it actually occurs. But honestly, I don't worry too much about being ripped. We know 9 of 10 comments on the boards will not be positive. I laugh.

Chris (Cincy)

Ellsbury or Crawford ROS? Right now, Crawford is performing way better.

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Ellsbury. Sorry.

Jeff (Miami)

Could Julio Jones explode this year? Seems like an ideal red zone target

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

If Roddy White was not there, sure. But Roddy is there and Jones will have to wait until maybe his fourth year to have the entire show to himself.

Ben (Boston)

EK, Tulo or Plouffe ROY? I know, I know. They are both on the DL. But since neither has a real date on their return, I wonder if either are even worth holding onto.

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

I think each is worth waiting for, but obviously Tulo can do a lot more fantasy damage if they return at roughly the same point. Both should be this month.

Jon (Dallas)

Miles Austin thoughts please

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

I'm not worried about the injury and think he's a bit of a sleeper. But that's me.

Joe (Peoria)

Hi Eric. What're your thoughts on Beltran ROS? I'm thinking in terms of the chance of him wearing down given that he's had to rest a few times this year. Is playing time a worry if he needs to rest more?

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

I think that's overthinking things. Why, because he's not young? He didn't wear down in 2011. And it's not like Berkman's return is pending to push Craig to RF. The Cardinals are desperate for wins. He's playing.

Bob (CA)

EK we are here because we respect your opinions and advice. Period. Also, appreciate the time you give us.

Eric Karabell
  (3:28 PM)

Thank you very much. And I do appreciate the kind thoughts, even if I don't always acknowledge them. I appreciate the negative thoughts as well. You're all entitled!

David (DC)

An owner just dropped Worley. Is he worth a pickup?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

No. Not at all. Has elbow problems and I expect he'll be shut down soon.

Dave (WI)

Aaron Rodgers, #1 overall pick in fantasy draft?

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

I have no problem with it, but I'd still go running back in the first 3 spots.

Simon (Montreal, Canada)

What to expect from Jose Bautista ROS? Droppable in a 10-team roto league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

I thought it was ridiculous when his injury was termed minor. Now we're seeing the truth as his return keeps getting delayed. I hope he returns. I really do. I'm losing faith.

Ricky (Mom's basement)

Jamie Garcia and Johan Santana are making news that they'll be returning to the rotation soon. Which one are you more enthusiastic about?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Definitely Santana. Better pitcher and was doing just fine before a few rough outings. Garcia has been out longer and he always seemed to be outperforming his peripherals, making him a sell high.

david (boston)

Over/under 6.5 golden sombreros for Brett Jackson this season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

It's a shame. He's probably not ready, with what, 7 Ks in his past 8 at bats? Can hit for modest power and run, but this might be ugly.

Clint (Texas)

Hey EK, how much would you change the auction prices listed on this site for a 10 teams league with 21 man rosters?

Eric Karabell
  (3:32 PM)

Not much at all. Honestly I rarely look at auction prices... use them as a guide but if you want to spend a few more on someone, do it. With extra bench spots perhaps I'm cautious on depth, but still, Rodgers and Foster are worth a ton.

Eric (DC)

Is it me or is Colby Rasmus being Jay Bruce-esk (30HR/.250avg/lots of Ks)?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

Looking that way, though I would still take Bruce over him every time.

Jason (Bmore)

Do you give any love to Felix Jones this year, or is it all DeMarco Murray?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

I have issue trusting either of them for big numbers. I think Murray, with all of 7 starts and 2 TDs to his good name, is being overrated, but there just isn't a lot of running backs to rely on in the top 15. Jones is average. Dallas could use more depth.

Jason (Georgia)

What do you think of Marshall reuniting with cutler?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

I hope they're both very happy together. Statistically it hardly means the same numbers from their Denver days, but I do seem to rank each better than most.

Dave (Tampa)

Favorite Summer Olympic Sport? Winter?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Swimming, beach volleyball and ... ice hockey!

Jerry (Tucson,AZ)

your biggest QB sleeper this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

There are no QB sleepers. I mean, there are 12 guys worthy of starting in a 10-team league (Big Ben, Ryan, etc.) and then, eh? I'd say Griffin could be terrific, but after round 10. I think Flynn can play, but he hasn't won the job. Palmer should be useful.

Clint (Texas)

My running backs are AP, DMC and Demarco Murray. Would you attempt to trade for more reliable and safe players and cross my fingers and focus on the upside?

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

Well, that's risky. On any given week all could run wild or none could play. But really, how many reliable RBs are there? I'd stick with this and hope 2 of the 3 run wild.

Dolph (Ohio)

David Freese is a sweet fantasy commodity. True or False.

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

Gives hope to all injury prone players that they can suddenly play an entire season. Maybe Darren McFadden is watching.

Rick (Pittsburgh)

Easy one, Vick or Rivers?

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

Vick has more upside, and should miss a few games, but go with him. Rivers should cut down on the interceptions but he's in the 9-11 range for QBs. Vick could be the top guy, really.

Luke (Australia)

I know it's only the first week, but Michael Floyd didn't appear with the starters and didn't have a reception in th HOF game. Do you think he's the No2 guy in AZ or is he behind Andre Roberts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

I doubt anything that happened in that first preseason game means a thing, and really, since Arizona's got Fitzgerald and a shaky QB situation, not sure it matters much. I'd be a bit surprised if Floyd starts, though.

Donald (NY)

Estrada or Straily?

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Oh Straily, easily.

Frank (Beans)

Would you keep Foster in the 2nd round or Newton in the 8th? 12 team league - 6pts all TDs. Rodgers/Brady/Brees all being kept by others.

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

Foster, definitely. OK, so it's not great value losing your 2nd rounder, but he's the No. 1 overall pick. Don't get greedy when the draft is already missing a lot of great players. You can find a QB later. Maybe even Newton.

Brian (Seattle)

Drop Ike Davis or Rizzo when Votto returns?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Ike. Rizzo should be able to hit at least .275 the rest of the way. Not sure Ike, despite recent numbers, can.

MALPH (HAPPY DAYS)

The next MIL save chance will go to?

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Rollie Fingers. OK, John Axford. Good mustache, just not as good.

Tristan Cockroft (Next Cubicle over)

I need help with my keeper rankings, who do you want long term EK? Jay Bruce or Brett Lawrie? Thanks buddy!

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

Tristan, you spelled your own name wrong! How could you! Take Lawrie, whoever you are...

John (NY)

Where do you draft Gronk or Graham?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

I probably don't, since they're going in round 2. I'll take Tony Gonzalez in round 9 every time.

Joe (Boston)

You can have one Manning brother as your QB, which one do you pick?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

Eli. People are a bit too excited and trusting when it comes to Peyton.

Josh (San Diego)

Hi Eric, with Clippard's recent struggles do you feel Storen may be in the picture soon? Much obliged.

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

I don't see the hierarchy changing any time soon. It's not like Clippard has been Chris Perez or Francisco Cordero, after all.

Brandon (Ohio)

Straily: 1 IP 3k. Over/Under 27 K's today?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

Ha! Let's say under. By about 17.

Ray (Cape Cod)

Would you trade Cargo for Granderson and Pence?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

Pence is crazy overrated, especially now in that ballpark. No, I would not.

Troy (Seattle)

Is 3B Chris Johnson rosterable?

Eric Karabell
  (3:45 PM)

Yeah, he is. I don't know how he doesn't hit .230, but he's been very good.

Jim (NYC)

Myers still worth stashing?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

See him in September. As a backup. Sorry, not my call!

Pat (NY)

Remember when everyone in spring training thought Lawrie and Hosmer wer going to hit .350 and 30hrs this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

That's generous. Hosmer was .300 with 25 HR, and Lawrie was around .300 with 25 and 20 steals.

rob (albany)

Hey EK...Did you partake in the most recent 10 team mock harris was talking about? I cant find it anywhere?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

I sure did. Should be posted this week. Major fun!

Christine (LA)

Hey Eric. Thoughts on Rios as a keeper? He seems to have put it together this year.

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

I think the minute people start keeping Alex Rios he'll go back to 2011 numbers. That's who he is.

Alvin (Not the Chipmunk)

Rollins, Rutledge, or Furcal?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

Rollins, reluctantly. Rutledge is not nearly this good and Furcal's health is issue.

Danny (Denver)

Does ARod have any relevance come H2H playoff time, or is it time to stop wasting a DL spot on him? Thanks Eric

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

I would move on, but it depends how you fill the roster spot.

Justin (Wilkes-Barre)

Ek, did you know Wilkes-Barre is the only hyphenated city in PA, and of a handful in the US? About where would you rank B. McCarthy on his return?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

I learn something every day. On McCarthy, I'd say outside the top 50 starting pitchers, but not by much.

Joe (MPLS)

Would you keep Rivers at 27, Austin at 25, Vjax at 10, Gore at 22 or get rid of them all?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

I'd probably punt them all and feel pretty good about it.

Dave (Tampa)

any chance Randall Cobb is a late round WR sleeper?

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Definitely. One of the fellas I'm looking at for deeper leagues, not really 10-team.

Tommy (Chicago)

How long can Fiers keep this up? 0 walks again and almost K per inning.

Eric Karabell
  (3:50 PM)

Probably forever. Beats me. He's already showing that his minor league stats told us little.

Jeff Headley (San Dimas)

will bailey close this year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

Andrew or Homer or Beetle? They each finish with a big goose egg in saves.

Todd (Cleveland)

Im in a AL only keeper league. Do you think it is safe to trade for Greinke for next season or do you see him going back to the NL

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

Safe, no. Dodgers could overpay for him. But Angels could too. No way to know.

Dan (NYC)

Trent Richardson going to visit James Andrews... uh oh.

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

What could go wrong? Ugh.

Doun (NY)

Time to let go of Lester?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

No. But as always if you're signing someone better, that's a different story. For Straily? No.

Jeff S. (Vermont)

EK, is it the right move to just drop Matt Garza considering his injury and the state of the Cubs?... I have no DL left!

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Yes. I don't think the Cubs have any incentive to start Garza anytime soon.

Logan (Fla.)

Eric drop Carlos Lee for Snider,D.Brown or Berkman?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Not real high on any of those guys, but I think Brown can be worth it.

Matt (Houston)

What has today's news taught us Eric? As always, God hates Cleveland. Is there anyone worth rostering in a 10 team from the Brownies? Little? Weeden?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

Let's not jump to conclusions yet. And it's not a bad city. I was there last month... nice ballpark, Rock and Roll HOF, it's just a simple visit to a doctor to say hello.

Adam (Newtown, PA)

D. Holland or F. Morales ROS? Who ya got?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

I cannot trust Morales, sorry.

Mike (CT)

Desmond Jennings....ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Now THAT's a disappointing season.

Chris (Burlington, KY)

Stay patient with Ellsbury? Another 0-4 game today.

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Absolutely.

Jeff Headley (San Dimas)

how many homers do you think trout will end up with

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

In his career, around 300. This season, 27.

East Coast Troy (NH)

Is Cruz or Nicks the man in NYC?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Can't both be? They both were last year, in terms of fantasy prowess.

Manny (Houston)

Would it be crazy to keep Stubbs over Hosmer?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

A little, yeah.

Hunter (Dallas)

Harper for Stanton, which side wins?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Stanton.

Nick (Work)

Traded Miguel Montero and Victorino for Prado Mccann and Ichiro, good deal?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

In theory, sure. But Ichiro isn't worth much.

Larry (VT)

Who to start at 3B ROS-- Chris Johnson or Chipper ?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Chipper. But this week and next, Johnson.

CAM (Chicago)

Should I be worried about Trumbo or will he pick it up? Not very impressive since the AS break.

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Hmmm, I wonder if that was expected or not?

Doun (NY)

Is Trout tradable this season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Everyone has a price. And I don't mean David.

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

OK, thanks to all for the fine questions. Hope you enjoyed it. Have a great day and best of luck in your baseball leagues and with your football drafts... Adios!
