Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the boxing chat. A pretty slow weekend although there are London Olympic semifinals today and the gold medal matches on Saturday and Sunday. There are two FNF shows left in the season, tonight and next week, but then in September lots of stuff coming that we can discuss. So let's get to it.

Brad (Hilton Head, SC)

Is Adrien Broner the next big thing? What is a list of next possible opponents?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

I haven't heard any specific names for the Oct. 6 proposed HBO date. I think if they could make the fight (hard given the TR-GB cold war) they'd love to match Broner with titleholder Miguel Vazquez.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Any news on Abner Mares next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Supposedly, he is going to fight on Showtime in October.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Whatup Danito? Did u happen to get any of the Ali stuff that was auctioned?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

No, the auction has not happened yet. The National sports card and memorabilia show last week in Baltimore than I went had it on display. The auction was allowing the public to preview it. The auction actually wont take place until November.

Matt M. (Worcester, MA)

With Tommy Oosthuizen out of the picture, do you still have your doubts about a Froch-Pavlik matchup? What is the likelihood of Froch facing the Stevenson-George winner?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Tommy Gunn could still get the fight if the Froch people raised the offer I suppose. I do not think Pavlik will be facing Froch this fall. No chance in my opinion. Froch (or whomever has the belt when the mandatory is due) will have to face the Stevenson-George winner. But that fight won't be due until around nine months from now.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

What's your opinion on the IBF's decision?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

You are obviously asking about this morning's announcement that Lamont Peterson can keep his 140 title. I am not privy to the medical findings so I do not have a strong opinion. However, the fact that he clearly had a banned substance in his system, which was not disclosed, is troubling. The IBF report said its doctor found the levels were not high enough to be performance enhancing. But the point is he still had a banned substance in his system and never told anyone or sought an exemption. That is a problem to me.

Muhammad (Dothan, Al)

Now that Lamont Peterson name has been "cleared" and with Khan's loss.... Who do you think he'll get in the square with?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

He has't been "cleared." One sanctioning body let him keep his title. He may still have trouble getting a licence from a state commission.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Here's my article on the Peterson/IBF situation: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8255582/ibf-rules-lamont-peterson-keep-junior-welterweight-belt

Bime (Taunton MA)

With a strong showing from the women in the Olympics, do you think this will create more inteest for women boxing in the pros? Clerissa Shields is a future star!

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

I do not think it will have any major impact on pro women's boxing in the US. It's one thing to get excited for a two-week tournament. But I do not see it carrying on two months or two years down the road.

Ace (Sactown)

How many more chances to be great is Zab gonna get? This guy will not go away

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

He won an official eliminator against Paris and gets the shot.

chris k (chantilly)

I think its great that Claressa Shields won the gold medal...but how much of a market is there for womens professional boxing? Seems like it fizzled out late 90's after the Christy Martin era IMO

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Who knows if she will even go pro? She's going back to high school.

Jose (SF, CA)

Dan, any more info on TMT? Is Mayweather promotions no more? And what's Leonard Ellerbe's role in all this?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

None of that has been addressed publicly yet by them.

JoJo (NYC)

What's going on with the Devon Alexander/Randall Bailey card? There seem to be conflicting reports on the date and location. When/where/will it happen?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

Showtime says 100% it's Sept. 8, site TBA. I spoke to Showtime on the topic yesterday.

jeff (gilbert)

Dan, Usually I am underwheled by the cards HBO and SHowtime put together. However the upcoming NIshioka and Alvarado card promisies to be their best ever.

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I dont know if I would say "best ever" but that Oct. 13 card kicks ass.

Rick (San Diego)

Thanks for posting Round 12 of Chavez-Taylor. What a great fight. The $64,000 question, though, should Richard Steele have stopped the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Glad you asked. That is a question I get ALL the time. I get a lot of questions over and over. So what I have done is written an FAQ with my most frequently asked questions with the answers. Look for it today on the boxing page.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

And lo and behold, it was just posted. So please check out my FAQ: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8255219/dan-rafael-chat-faq

Tommy Deas (Tuscaloosa, Alabama)

What did you think of Deontay Wilder's fight last weekend? And if you were mapping his next five fights, who would you put him in with, in order?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

He showed the power like he always does. But I didnt feel like Manswell put up any kind of fight at all. I know Deontay would like to step up his competition. I hope his handlers feel the same way. It's time to see what he's got 4 years after his turned pro. At least a decent opponent.

Marcus (New York)

What are there more of , Ricky Hattons or USA Boxing medals for 2012?!

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

More boxing medals. There's only one Ricky Hatton, but the American women took home two medals, a gold and a bronze.

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Remember when the USA didn't win gold in basketball and they realized there needed to be major changes, maybe they will do the same thing with the USA boxing team.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Maybe. Check out my Dream Team for a Team USA of boxers: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8250968/to-fix-broken-us-boxing-olympic-program-why-not-dream-team

Joey (Charleston, SC)

Who's fighter of the year so far? I don't know if I could choose between Carl Froch, Danny Garcia, Orlando Salido...

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

There are still some major fights left. If Chavez beats Martinez, he's a good bet. But there are some solid candidates. Certainly Garcia is one of them.

Chris C (Washington DC)

Hey Dan, Do you know why the original decision was made to not allow pros in Olympic boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I dont.

Frank (PHX)

DTM, I've gotta say I love that Top Rank is showing 5 fights on the Chavez/Martinez PPV I think every PPV should be 5 instead of 4 fights but was the reason behind them doing that is so the start of the Main event gets pushed back to start later than the Canelo fight? Or is this something that would hopefully start being the norm?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

The reason for the addition of the Mike Lee to the Sept ppv is, as far as I understand it, that Subway, which Lee does commercials for, wanted him on TV as part of a major sponsorship of the event.

Aaron (MI)

Any idea who Khan will return against at 140? Any suggestions?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Up in the air, but whatever he does his next fight should be in the UK.

Andrew F. (new york)

Your article on having professionals representing their countries in the olympics is one of your best written and most entertaining you've written. It also happens to be a terrific idea. Thanks for a great read!

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Thanks. I had fun putting that together.

The Hard Y (PDX)

I remember lots of talk about a Nunn-Leonard showdown in the late 80s, early 90s. Thoughts? I always though Nunn was just too long and too big for Leonard.

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

I remember that. HBO was really grooming Nunn for that fight. But I thought Ray would have found a way to win it.

mike (Cali)

Why do u have arreola higher on the heavy ranking than Haye. Arreola hasnt fought or won against anybody worthy.

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

Haye simply is not active. He beat Chisora, who had been wiped out by Vitali, so good win for Haye but nothing overwhelming. Before that, Haye had not fought for a year and was coming off a the one-sided loss to Wladimir. Arreola, while not facing top opposition in recent fights, was very very busy. That's the reason.

Scott (Raleigh)

Did you see Wilbon and Kornheiser talking about boxing being DEAD on PTI the other night? Thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

No, and if they were it doesn't surprise me. They've been singing that tired tune for years. Typical mainstream nonsense.

Richard (Croydon UK)

A few bad decisions, and team USA's shocking performance aside, would you not agree the Olympic boxing has had some terrificly entertaining fights, and the atmosphere has been AMAZING! I had the privilege of being at the womans finals yesterday, and it was the best atmosphere of any sporting event I have ever been to.

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

The actual bouts have been far more entertaining overall than previous Olympics I've watched. So that's good. But the scoring and refereeing has overall been wretched.

Brian (Boston)

In response to your FAQ can you at least write a column explaining your pacquiao/mayweather prediction and have stored away only to be realeased a) on fight week or b) if you die unexpectedly? The freaks gots to know.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

No. If I croak before the fight ever happens my pick will go to the grave with me.

Mickey (Chicago)

The FAQ is great, but unless you post a link to it at the beginning of every chat I fear you will continue to be asked these questions over and over.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

That is the plan.

Danny (LA)

Any info. about when tickets will go on sale for the Nonito fight yet???

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Hasn't been announced yet.

Ron (Baltimore)

What happened to Escobedo getting the WBO shot at 130 as part of his 'settlement' for fighting an overweight Broner? Martinez-Beltran Jr. was announced to fill the title with Burgos getting the winner.

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Apparently, that is not happening and he will simply remain high in the rankings.

Jaco (Baltimore)

Dan, This might be FAQ worthy, but what is the best pre-fight press conference you've seen or attended?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

Good one!!

drew (nj)

true freaks will read the FAQ and say, "I already knew that".

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Agreed, but it is meant for those not nearly as devoted as you are.

Dave (Kansas City, MO)

Hi Dan, how well do you know Nigel Collins, who is now a boxing colleague of yours at ESPN? Do you know the story behind Mr. Collins leaving Ring Magazine? I can't find any information about that.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I've known Nigel for years. He's a good man and writer with vast boxing knowledge. Golden Boy fired him (and several others) when it overhauled the Ring magazine. In my view, it was not the right move and has badly hurt the credibility of the publication.

Roy (Reno)

Speaking of Arreola, what are his future plans?

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Unclear. He is now rated No. 1 by the wretched WBC, so we will see. I doubt he's getting a rematch with Vitali any time soon.

Rick (San Diego)

Still won't give up that Pacquiao-Mayweather pick . . . . You keep holding out hope they will get it done.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

A man can dream right?

Haris Syed Abbasi (Edison, NJ)

Dan any word on whos going to be on the next HBO 2 Days? Also any word on legendary nights coming back to HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Yes, the next 2 Days will be on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and it should debut at some point this month. Nothing on Legendary Nights, which I do hope HBO brings back at some point.

Benjamin (Little Rock, Ark.)

Additional kudos on the Olympic boxing/pros story, Dan. Fantastic ideas; would love to see them implemented. Scrap the dumb scoring, bring in the best. Interest would be stratospheric.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Would be MASSIVE interest around the world.

Sean Mc (Ireland)

There should also be a list of chat rules 1) read the notebook and articles beforehand. 2) Don't diss Kiss 3) DON'T DISS KISS !!

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

LOL!

Keith (Chicago) [via mobile]

What's next for Mike Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

No idea. Hopefully nothing that involves fighting on a major telvised card.

Andrew F. (new york)

Question on the FAQ: Why did you think to pick Rahman over Lewis in the first fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I was in Vegas two weeks before the fight to cover Barrera-Hamed. During that fight week, the MGM Grand Garden Arena was also being used to film scenes for Ocean's Eleven. Lennox and Emanuel Steward were in the movie for the fight scenes with Wladimir Klitschko. I was on the set and saw how Lennox was behaving. Later in the week there was a news conference for Lewis-Rahman at the MGM since all the boxing media was there for Barrera-Hamed. So they had Lennox at the presser and had Rahman via satellite from South Africa. Rahman had been there for about 3 weeks and looked in tremendous shape and was absolutely focused on the fight. Lennox was hanging in Vegas without a care in the world and very obviously not taking the fight seriously and not in great shape. He was going to give himself only about a week to get used to the elevation of South Africa and the time change. I picked Rahman because he was ready and Lennox was not at all. I was not surprised in the least when Rahman drilled him. Lennox took his championship for granted and paid the price.

Todd (Florence, SC)

Does Marroquin have a legitimate chance against Rigondeaux, or is this another Rigondeaux destruction?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

If Marroquin can land the right hand with authority he might have a chance. But I think Rigondeaux wins it.

Jose (SF, CA)

Dan, can you clear up the Martinez-Beltran fight situation? I think I read in your article that they're fighting in September and again in November. Did I get that right?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

They are fighting on Sept. 15.

Frank (PHX)

Is the the undercard for Chavez/Martinez all set?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Yes, check the ESPN.com boxing schedule.

Juan (Puerto Rico)

If Cotto had two options of fighting Money May or Pacman on December 1 at MSG which rematch would you rather see?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I'm fine with either but neither of those rematches will happen at MSG because Floyd and Manny arent going to fight in NY.

Fabien (London)

Your worst pick has to be corrales over may weather no?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Not worse than Rahman over Lennox in the rematch.

Juan C (San Diego)

Great FAQ! By the way, the fact that you've never wavered on who you'd think would win in the Floyd-Pac fight gives the answer away. MP is not who he used to be, he's lost a step or two AND drive, and Floyd just fought and beat a very good Miguel Cotto. The fact that today your pick hasnt changed from when the idea of the fight was first announced makes me think you've picked Floyd all along. My .02

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

When they make the fight, all will be revealed.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

Reading the FAQ: Didn't you score at least one Pacquiao - Maquez fight for Manny? I seem to remember this very vividly.

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

No, that is why the FAQ is there. In fact, when I was compiling the scores of those fights I went into all of the scorebooks I have saved over the years to pull out my exact scores as I scored them on fight night. I have about 10 scorebooks filled with every fight I have ever scored from ringside.

Julio (Arizona)

How many Comps do you anticipate will be given out for Canelo Alvarez vs Josesito Lopez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

A lot.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Dan, from Todd DuBoef's twitter account: "For everyone asking, Oct 13 show: Donaire v Nishioka , Rios v Alvarado- tix on sale Thursday August 16."

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

There ya go.

Roy (Reno)

How many more showcase fights is HBO going to give Broner? I like him but he should at least fight one dangerous fight before we crown him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

They're willing to face good opponents, the issue is that at 130 and 135 there are not any top notch opponents right now.

Chris (Detroit)

Do you think the IBF ruling on Peterson will have any impact on the NSAC ruling later this month?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

None.

Jason (Grosse)

as far as your column on Pros in the olympics for USA...you really think mayweather would fight for free? this is a guy who time and time again will not fight pacquiao because of money..he turned down a 50/50 split of probably 150 million all said and done to fight manny pacquiao and u think he would go to olympics and fight for nothing? i dont see it...after all his nickname is MONEY

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

If you read the piece I explain why I think Floyd would.

Mark (Chicago)

Hey Dan,Does the US Boxing Medal shut out mean that the Golden Boy Olympian showcase on CBS will feature all Foreign fighters?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

No idea. I do know that interest in the pro debuts of the Olympians will be pretty soft since there are no men medal winners.

Jason (Grosse)

One of the most exciting fights to be made in boxing in my opinion is cotto-canelo...even more than pac-may...your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

I'd LOVE to see Cotto-Canelo.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

Chico over Mayweather wasn't a bad pick a ton of people thought Floyd was going to lose that fight!

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

You're right. People forget what an absolute beast Corrales was at that time.

Chris (new york)

Hey Dan, I'm surprised you didn't put Ricardo Lopez vs Mark Johnson on your dream match list. Any consideration to that one on your dream match list?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Good point. I may have to add that.

Mickey (Chicago)

I've read a bunch of comments from people complaining about Nishioka as Nonito's next opponent because they've never heard of him. Anybody not familiar with Nishioka should check out his fight with Jhonny Gonzalez on Youtube. He's a damn good fighter, and he's definitely the hardest puncher Nonito has faced in a long time.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Agreed. He's a real guy, very experienced, great record, has faced and beaten several very good opponents. Just because he fights in Japan does not mean he is not a top fighter. I have had him on and off near the bottom of my top 20 p4p rankings.

Al (York PA)

Dan: Do you anticipate a combined major MMA and boxing event?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

No.

Jeremy (Beaufort, Ireland)

Any news on Anselmo Moreno's next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Nothing solid at the moment.

Chris O. (The Bing, NY)

RE: FAQs additionFavorite/least favorite venues to see a fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Yeah, I forgot that one. I get asked a lot.

Mike (Dc)

Is EPIX still planning a live show in Q4 2012?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

The schedule isn't set but Epix likely will have a card in September and then maybe one or two more after that before the end of the year, but nothing is definite yet.

Ryan (Uk)

With Vasyl Lomachenko looking good for gold- what does this do for Joel Julio? Does he become the super love child? Or the love child in recess?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Rob (Miami)

Dan, do you thing this Oct 13 card is a response from Top Rank to the TMT signings?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Absolutely not. They have nothing to do with each other. HBO and Top Rank worked out a deal for a great show, that's it.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

Dan, you put nothing in your FAQ about barbecues, water pressure, Broner's hair, David Haye's toe or Joel Julio. Those seem to be the most asked questions in the chats...

Justin (Denver)

Oh I am so happy I finally get to know who you rooted for as a kid! Thank you, Your Highness, thank you for taking pity on us lowly freaks... I knew you were on some kind of power trip, but it has gone right to delusions of grandeur.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

The morons are out. I answered questions I get all the time. Why folks care about who I rooted for as a kid, I have no idea. But I am happy to answer it. If you dont care that's fine too. So dont read it.

Kevin (Plymouth, MI)

I liked the FAQ's. But you actually watched a Ruiz fight twice? Why punish yourself like that?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

It had to be done.

Mike (Dc)

Anything on a new date for Cloud-Pascal? Espinoza should just bump Alexander for the 4th time and air a fight that people actually wanna see!

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Showtime told me that it is unlikely to be reschedule the fight for this year. If it is not resked, Yvon Michel (Pascal's promoter) told me Pascal would fight somebody else this fall in Montreal without Showtime's involvement.

Steve (Minneapolis, MN)

Was not impressed at all with Deontay Wilder. His stance is terrible and I'm not sure he even knows what a jab is.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

The jab needs work, that is for sure.

Joe M (Dallas)

DTM, I get the feeling that HBO really wants Chavez to win. Your thoughts?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Probably. Wouldnt it make sense for HBO to want to roll with a Mexican star who is 26 and a future PPV star possibly than a 37-year-old from Argentina with no serious fan base in America?

Mike (Dc)

Is Seth Mitchell-Banks a go for 10/6 on HBO BAD?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

If HBO and GB come up with a main event and do the show then, yes, that is supposed to be the opener.

Al (York PA)

Why has Bradley been pushed to the side and almost scorned for beating manny?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Because other than .00006 percent of the people on the planet nobody thinks he won.

Bruce (Alexandria)

The John Ruiz comments remind me of the old joke,Q: Who is the nicest man in boxing?A: John Ruiz - he's always hugging his opponents

Berndawg (CHI)

And this would leave Tavoris Cloud with nada?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

This would be correct.

Rob (Miami)

DTM, Justin is just an idiot. He hates Dan, but is on the chat. Classic troll!

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Yup.

Tom (Pittsburgh)

You gotta add: "Dan do you get paid extra for the chats?" on the FAQ.

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Nah, but the answer is no.

Todd (Tn)

Despite team usa's poor showing at this year's olympics do you see any of those team members as solid to superstar level pros?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I see no superstars. I hope I'm wrong.

Scott (Raleigh)

Justin....he's just logging questions....no power trip...what did I miss?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Exactly. Some people are too stupid to get it.

Mike (Cleveland)

Seriousl question about Olympic boxers turning pro. Everyone says "this american is going pro..that american is going pro". What about the guys not from america who beat their a** up for 2 weeks? How come no one talks about their pro potential?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

There are lots of guys in the Olympics who will go pro and be good. In the US most people are interested in the futures of the US fighters. I'm sure in Russia they care about the pro possibilities of the Russian fighters, not the Americans.

Nick (DE)

DTM, After reading your faq, one caught my eye, no super heavyweights, but you would like some divisions to be eliminated, which ones would you get rid of?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

I'd try to combine some of the smaller divisions -- eliminate 105, combine 112 and 115 or combine 115 and 118. I could see it being 108, 112, 118. Or go 105, 112, 118. Maybe get rid of 122.

Rob (Bellmore, NY)

Did showtime say why Cloud-Pascal can't be rescheduled?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Schedule conflicts with dates the arenas in Canada are available.

Frank (PHX)

WAR FOR ALVARADO VS RIOS!!!!!!!!!! Anyone who has any complaints about this fight is just not a fan of boxing!

Ross (Indianapolis)

As someone who doesn't closely follow Olympic boxing, Michael Wilbon's piece this week was a stunning eye-opener. How did things deteriorate so badly? Where does the blame lie?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

USA Boxing is a joke.

Ron (NY)

Your olympic idea is competely impossible. No world class fighters would risk millions of dollars for gold.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

First off, I do think pros would take part just like the NBA guys. Second, and this is the part that people fail to get, I was HAVING FUN!!! I was writing something that was basically a fantasy thing for fun and some people take that too damn seriously.

Bill (Denver)

I don't think you can say someone is on a power trip when they aren't required to have twitter..yet use it endlessly to connect with readers...and doesn't get paid a dime for these chats but hasn't gone a week without doing one in God knows how long....Seriously when was the last time you went a week without a chat?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

It happens from time to time but I often do two chats a week. Last year I did more than 60 chats I believe. I am off next week and will not be chatting next Friday as I will have my family in town for a little R&R.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

When you watch a fight on YouTube that isn't televised here, do you burn it to a DVD and add it to your collection?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

No, I eventually get the DVD of the broadcast.

Robert (Richmond, VA)

Really looking forward to the Klitschko Documentary on HBO next month. Seems like it's been out forever before we in the States have gotten to see it!

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

It's very good. I particularly liked the non-boxing part that shows you stuff about how they grew up.

corey (westwick)

Now that Gamboa is with 50 is he any closer to getting the ring

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

They're looking for an opponent and trying to set up a fall fight.

Frank (PHX)

Is the Canelo card only 3 fights? I thought they were adding a 4th fight as well

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Supposedly, they are doing four fights but the fourth fight has not been announced yet.

Aaron (MA)

if Cunningham and Adamek win their fights next month, do you think we could see a rematch between them on NBC in December>

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

I dont think it will be this year but I do think we'll see it at some point next year.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Dan, you were a big fan of Tyson, but he didn't crack your Top 10 heavies of all time? Is he top 15?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

just because I was a big Tyson fan does not mean I make him top. There's a difference between being a fan and being honest about where somebody ranks.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Take a guess: Who and where will Manny fight November 10?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Bradley at MGM Grand.

Bob (IN)

What's up playboy. How can I get Cablevision to put EPX on their cable system?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Call, write and complain that you want it.

Joeluis323 (LosAngeles )

any one else excited for the 'Tyson' Marquez Vs Hawaiian punch?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

I'd like to see it but until there's a TV deal there's no fight.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

the what dvd recorder question must go in the FAQ you used to get that asked like twice a week.

Mikey (New York)

Have you spoken to Floyd since he's been a free man?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

No.

Frank Fletcher (NY, NY)

Will Juan Ma fight again this year?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Not sure.

Noah (Plantation, FL)

I'm surprised Mike Tyson didn't make your Top 10 Heavyweights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I'm not.

Jimmy (NY)

Hey Dan...no interest in Mora-Vera 2 tomorrow night? Their first fight was very entertaining

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

Not really.

Orlando ((UK))

Mariusz Wach is claiming he reached an agreement to challenge Wladimir Klitschko for the title. Can you independently confirm the fight is a go?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

According to the Klitschko camp, which I have been talking to, they are talking about the Wach fight but that there is no deal done at this point.

Mike (Houston)

Despite the poor showing in london. Do you think golden boy and CBS will still show a prime time fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

The Olymic card was supposed to be an afternoon show, not a prime time card.

Julio (Arizona)

Any updates on the Love Child?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child. No.

Jose Suleiman (WBC)

In the spirit of the Olympic games, the Super Diamond Gold Medal is now up for grabs!

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

In recess, for a small sanctioning fee, of course.

Orlando (Miami)

Thank you Jorge Arce for overpricing yourself, now we get to see a more competitive fight. I like Nishioka by UD.

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

I was happy that Arce also priced himself out of the fight. I was told he asking for $850,000.

Bob (Houston)

Dan, can you think of other fights like Chavez-Taylor where one guy who was an elite fighter came out of that one night so diminished they were never the same again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

I dont think Paul Williams was ever the same after the first fight with Sergio Martinez.

Chris (Roswell nm)

I was real skeptical about Michael Wilbon writing a story about the problems withus boxing, but I thought it was well written and made some good points. do you agree.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Yes.

Mike (Houston)

What is your favorite teddy atlas olympic quote so far?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

When he said he needed a bucket next to him becuase he was going to vomit after one particularly heinous decision.

Rob (Miami)

DTM, is the WBC getting away with lying to the public's face again? I haven't seen Abril or Olusegun get a title fight they were promised like 20 times over. How long will Matthysse have to wait?#wbcisdigusting

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Of course. #wbcisdisgusting

jcs (edmonton)

Dan, does the same guy ask the Love Child question every week, or is it a mix? I just wonder if it's become one guys' thing and he takes pride in it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

A mix. Ahhhhhh, the Love Child.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Any chance that Epix could pick up Robert Stieglitz vs. Arthur Abraham? It's the only real meaningful fight for this month.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Not happening.

JonG (Queens)

The best teddy quote to me (or most hilarious anyway) was when he quoted al pacino in "And Justice for all". No your our of order! this whole damn place is out of order!"

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

That was also good.

Mike (Los Angeles)

I also think that Castillo and Corrales were really never the same after their first fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

You're right. Corrales never won another fight and Castillo has been pretty mediocre since.

Richie (Bronx NY)

Is top rank still planning on having R. Marquez/ W. Vazquez on PPV. Shocked one of the spanish channels hasn't made a play for it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

It's not a Top Rank card but that fight has been rescheduled for Oct. 6 along with Ivan Calderon challenging for a 105 belt against Moises Fuentes. I would imagine it will be a PPV.

rafael (downey,ca)

Alvarado/Rios can't wait!!! This has the making of a hell in the cell,no holds barred, I quit match ,all in one!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

LOL.

Matt (Pittsburgh)

Dan, so far Showtime has two shows scheduled for September, and they are both going head to head with far superior HBO shows. What are they thinking, and why exactly am I paying for Showtime when by the time the HBO fights are over I will already know the Showtime results?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

I have no idea. As for knowing the results, just dont check. If you dont want the results you dont have to find them out.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

What is your impression of Donaire in person? He seems to have a very TV friendly personality from what I've seen.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Donaire is a good guy with a great personality. I like him a lot. It's hard not to.

Paul (Concord, CA )

All plans for Oct. 13 have been cancelled. I will be in front of a TV with HBO on for this rare type of card.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Holyfield vs Mercer 2. Speechless.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

It's an exhibition that is part of a Nelson Mandela celebreation. Relax.

Doug Garcia (Chicago)

Will be heading to vegas 9/15 weekend. Which fight would you recommend in attending, Canelo or Chavez jr?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Well which card do you like better? Your call not mine.

Anthony (san diego)

any update on victor ortiz?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

No because nothing is going on. He'll be out for several months still recovering from his broken jaw. I dont think he will fight again this year.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

If you missed my boxing Dream Team piece, please check out: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8250968/to-fix-broken-us-boxing-olympic-program-why-not-dream-team

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

Dont forget to also check out the blog. It's updated regularly: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael

Ken (Tulsa, Oklahoma)

Do you think Tyson Fury is ready to take on Wladmir Klitchko?

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

Nobody is really ever ready for that these days.

J in FLA (Cocoa, FL)

How about that turn out for Katie Taylor at the Olympics? That was something to see.

Dan Rafael
  (1:47 PM)

It was great.

Tom (San Diego)

Thoughts on Mares/Moreno close to being finalized?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Solid fight obviously.

Rob (Miami)

My favorite Teddfy olympic quote has to be when he asked AIBA to get a bus to send the officials home and after the decition was announced he said "maybe I'll go home".

Bruce (Alexandria)

Other fights like Chavez-Taylor where one guy who was an elite fighter came out of that one night so diminished they were never the same again - I don't think Vargas was the same after the Trinidad fight, even taking into account his back issues.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

You're right. Vargas was never the same or even close.

Anthony (san diego)

All plans for Oct 13 include me going to carson for the fight!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

See you there.

Joe (Chicago)

Is Martinez-Chavez definitely a 20 x 20 ring, or does Top Rank have some wiggle room on this issue?

Dan Rafael
  (1:51 PM)

The fight is in Nevada. The ring sizes are standard.

Anthony (PA)

Dan, in your memory, which 2 fighters genuinely despised each other the most when the cameras weren't rolling?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Morales and Barrera for sure.

jeff (gilbert)

Dan,Is there and chance Rios actually makes weight for the Alvarado fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

At 140, he should be just fine.

Ron (NY)

How is Tim Bradley not above Pacman on your P4P List? Controversial or not, wins and losses still mean something.

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

It's my list and that is my opinion.

Ace (Sactown)

what do you think of the IBF's ruling? If the Doctor is saying it didnt help Peterson as a PED do you think Peterson should still be looked at as a cheater?

Dan Rafael
  (1:54 PM)

One doctor's opinion is not going to change the wide perception of Peterson as a cheater. The fact is, for whatever reason, he knowingly had a banned substance in his system and he knows better. He should have sought an exemption.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

What are the friendliest fighters you've seen fight? Seems by their third fight Bowe and Holyfield should have just exchanged BFF lockets.

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

Gatti and Ward became very close friends through their trilogy to the point where Ward was Gatti's trainer at the end of his career.

Kevin (CT)

I think the main difference btwn pro boxer and NBA players in the olympics is insurance. If Kobe tears his ACL he will still get paid his full contract, boxers are basically independent contractors.

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

Obviously, if pro fighters the stature of a Mayweather or Ward went to the Olympics USA Boxing would have to work out insurance for them too.

jcs (edmonton)

just read your dream team piece and got excited even though it's just a fantasy. would love to see the pros adjust to 4 rounders with headgear. there would be a lot of action, and probably a whole channel dedicated to it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Exactly. Glad you liked it. I was trying to have some fun at an otherwise very slow week. Not easy to come up with stories every day.

John (Washington D.C.)

Don't nitpick on your p4p list about Floyd requesting early release. Any person with that status would do anything to get house arrest.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

My list. I'll nitpick what I want to nitpick.

Adam phx [via mobile]

Whats next for gary russel?

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Hopefully, an opponent with a pulse.

Nizzi (Des Moines)

Dan, how dare you have fun when you are writing an article!

Dan Rafael
  (1:58 PM)

LOL.

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

By the way, if you look at the top of the chat you will see the FAQ link has been added: http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/44816

Darryl (NYC)

Dan, What are your thoughts on a Judah/Peterson fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Decent fight if it happens. Remember, Peterson still has to be licensed. That's not a guarantee.

Rick (Sacramento)

What's the future of Shane Mosely? Will he retire or is he considering fighting again?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

He announced his retirement in June. Read this: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8009701/sugar-shane-mosley-announces-retirement-ring

Anthony (san diego)

with it being such a slow month in boxing, how do you come up with stories?

Dan Rafael
  (2:04 PM)

It aint easy.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Will the Oct. 13th HBO BAD card be the first BAD card you've attended in a long time?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

No. There havent been a lot of BAD cards recently. I was at the Donaire-Narvaez BAD card in late October.

John (Washington D.C.)

Dan are you going to the Martinez fight? I've never been this excited for september 15th. I have to watch the GB card too though, definitely ordering PPV that night and flipping back and forth.

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Yes. I have an 11-day road trip coming. I'll be going to Oakland for Ward-Dawson and then will go directly to Vegas for Martinez-Chavez, although I will also be writing about Alvarez-Lopez as well.

Mike (los angeles)

Any news of Pac next opponent? Have you called Bob Arum?

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Arum and Manny are meeting in the Philippines. I spoke to Bob just before he left and I'm sure we'll talk again when he gets back.

Kieran (Anchorage)

And you were at the Garcia-Morales BAD card earlier this year. You were seated next to me, so it must have been one of the more memorable highlights of your career.

Dan Rafael
  (2:08 PM)

LOL, forgot abuot that one. Was that BAD or WCB?

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Everyone is mentioning Alvarado-Rios, but Matthysee-Olesegun hasn't been getting as much love. I still think the latter is inferior but not by much and shouldn't be overlooked.

Dan Rafael
  (2:09 PM)

The Matthysse-Ajose fight is not yet signed.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

What does Dan do with his family when he's off? I can't imagine boxing still doesn't seep into that down time somehow.

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Oh I'll still check out fights on TV but I will also kick back and enjoy time with the family. Haven't seen my mother and sister and her family in awhile. Mrs. DTM is making plans. We're going to spend one day in Baltimore and take my niece and nephew to the aquarium there, which is great.

Kieran (Anchorage)

You're right. It was WCB. In that small venue kinda felt like BAD, but nope, WCB it was.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

There ya go then! I guess the air is thin in Alaska.

Peter (NYC)

I think our friends at the luxembourg boxing federation will give Peterson license?

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!!

Kieran (Anchorage)

It's all the daylight. Drives a man insane. OK, more insane.

Dan Rafael
  (2:12 PM)

Exactly.

Justin (Seattle)

How heavily edited must any Bob Arum conversation be before it can be recounted on a family website like espn?

Dan Rafael
  (2:13 PM)

Not too much. Bob is usually fine. He may drop a couple of F-bombs here and there but nothing compared to some others.

Steve (DC)

Do you think Wach would be a worthy challenger for Wladimir?

Dan Rafael
  (2:15 PM)

Not really but there arent many guys to pick from. He's one of several guys who are about the same.

Jeff (South Dakota)

Loved the pics of your boxing cards.Do you try to collect sets or just go after personal favorites? How large is your collection?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

I have some sets but I mainly collect the specific cards/fighters I like best. I have a pretty good collection. I've been adding to it lately, both old cards and newer ones. I've got stuff from the 20s to the present.

Chris (glendale, CA)

Better question. "How heavily edited must any LOU DIBELLA conversation be before it can be recounted on a family website like espn?"

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Heavily. LOL.

Dave (Cincinnati, OH)

Dan, do you have any information on HBO broadcasting the Klitschko documentary? Only thing I've found is an article claiming June 2012, but obviously that isn't correct.

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

It's supposed to be on next month I think. I THINK it's supposed to be on around the time of the Vitali Klitschko-Charr fight, which is another reason HBO bought that fight.

Audel (Oakland, CA)

regarding boxing cards, any specific sites other than ebay that are worth checking out to buy some?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

Not really. Ebay is good. I also picked up some at the recent National sportscards show I went to in Baltimore last weekend. While I was up there I had some of my boxing stuff professional graded and slabbed. I tweeted some pix.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Any updates on Vanes-Lara?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Nothing. I've talked to both sides and there has been no movement. Despite the purse bid taking place I do not think the fight is going to happen.

John (Washington D.C.)

Is Povetkin ducking Wladimir or what. Why can't that fight be put together?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

Because Povetkin has been running like Usain Bolt in the 100.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

Who do you think is the most complete fighter of all-time? I'd have to go with Ricardo Lopez, keep in my mind I said 'complete' not the 'greatest' ever, some tend to confuse the two.

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

Lopez is one of my favorite fighters.

Timmy (California)

did you ever fix your incorrect Bradley v. Pacquiao card where you only had Timmeh winning one round

Dan Rafael
  (2:22 PM)

As I have said before, after re-watching the fight I felt like maybe I could have given Bradley two more rounds and had it 9-3.

Steve (DC)

Who is calling Ward-Dawson for HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (2:23 PM)

Lampley, Merchant and Emanuel.

Joe B. (Pittsburgh)

How does a purse bid work?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

This will go in the FAQ when it's updated but here it goes: When there's a mandatory fight (be it a title defense, vacant title or eliminator) and the sides can't make a deal the organization sanctioning the bout will call for a purse bid. Any registered promoter can bid to gain promotional control of the fight under the purse bid rules. Whichever promoter offers the most money wins the promotional rights and the amount offered is split between the fighters on a percentage basis agreed to ahead of time. Usually, it's 50-50 for a vacant title or eliminator but there are rules that allow for the percentages to be tweaked. In title bouts, the champion generally gets about 70 or 75%, depends on the organization and some other factors.

Nizzi (Des Moines)

Dan, have you ever scored a fight and had fighter A winning, and then rewatched the fight and felt fighter B won? Or do you always stand by your judging

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

Read the FAQ boss.

Jose (Lennox, CA)

I must admit, this flirting between you and Kieran was getting a little uncomfortable!

Jeff (Las Vegas)

been waitin 3 yrs for the faq. Glad you id it thx

Timmy (California)

do you like Mayweather with hair

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

Makes him look even more like his daddy.

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

OK, Fight Freaks, thanks for chatting today. Hope you enjoyed the FAQ, the Olympic Dream Team piece and the blogs and news stories from the week. Enjoy the rest of the Olympics and FNF. There won't be a chat next Friday as I am taking a little summer R&R. I'll be back in two weeks. Have a great weekend. Peace.
