What shall we talk about? Joey Logano having two offers on he table? Do you believe AJ Allmendinger when he says the pill he took was an isolated incident? Should Brian Vickers be in a fulltime Cup ride? Talk to me.
Who will be the New Drivers in the Sprint Cup Series or Drivers Changing Teams in 2013?
Well, you know Danica will be fulltime in 2013. Austin Dillon will drive probably seven races in Cup. Not sure there will be many more opportunities. Same. As for as changing teams, could be a few if Logano leaves JGR and Newman leaves SHR.
What happened to Tim Brewer and the ESPN Craftsman Tech Garage? While ESPN's NASCAR and IndyCar telecasts are still the best around, that element of the telecasts is definitely missed.
Sorry to say but the garage was shut down.
Do you think that NASCAR should award bonus points for more than just leading a lap, leading the most laps, and winning a race? A bonus point for the polesitter would be nice. The idea that the points leader after the race at Richmond should receive some bonus points is also very intriguing.
I agree a bonus point for winning the pole would give qualifying more meaning. And I've said from the beginnig that the regular-season champion should get bonus points, something for leading after 26 races.
David, moving some of my stuff over to Lakeland for grad school so figured I would send this in early. Any timeline for Logano to make a decision? Think a change of scenery could do him well and Penske would be a good fit if so.
He said the next couple of days would be critical, and he was either a few days or a few weeks from making the call. I don't know for sure if Penske is in the mix, but I'd have to imagine it was. That makes it a tough call and puts the pressure on Gibbs to come up with solid sponsorship since Penske already has that.
Is there a chance the 24 can make the top ten? And do you think the wildcard teams will remain the same until the chase?
No, top 10 is too far out with five races left. And it's tough to say on the wild card teams. If Logano or Newman or Busch wins a second race, and each could, then Gordon gets bumped. If Edwards wins a race and is ahead of Gordon in points, Gordon gets bumped. If you're asking which two drivers I'd pick, I'd stick with Kasey Kahne and Gordon.
Penske says he wants Sam in the car. So why would people think he offered Logano anything? Sam is his priority.
Don't forget, the plan was to expand to three cars in 2013 with Sam in one car. Sam's NW sponsors were considering a move up to Cup. If Penske can pull it off, adding a Logano and going to three teams would strengthen his organization.
Why is NASCAR considered the redneck sport and indycar the racing series for the educated when up to this year indy was a spec series. If you are interested in in-race engineering and strategy, NASCAR, with all the changes they can make to the car during a race, is much more a thinking man's series then people give it credit for these days. Do people just not pay attention to what goes on in the pits?
That has more to do with the origin of NASCAR and not its current state. Remember,it was born on moonshiners in the South.
Love your chats, Mr. Newton!
Thanks. Ask me a question and I'll answer it.
Hi Newt, who do you think will be Kenseth's crew chief next year?
Not sure if he'll be able to bring Jimmy Fennig along with him. Gibbs has a pretty good core of people in place. Not sure it really matters. Kenseth is a talent that can work with almost anyone.
Hey Newt man! Who's your top 5 this weekend? Who do you like as a dark horse? I'm thinking the 55 might sneak up there. Thoughts?
Ambrose, Stewart, Gordon, Montoya and KyBusch. Darkhorse: Truex Jr. But can't argue with Vickers being a darkhorse, either.
Hi Newt - are you making the trip to The Glen this weekend? I love that Nascar makes the trip up here. What are your thoughts on road races on the schedule? Is the Glen safe having a spot on the schedule? Do you think they'll ever add any more road courses?? Thanks!
Sorry to say, but no. I volunteered, but I've been to four straight and the bosses thought I needed a week off. I love the Glen as well. Beautiful countryside and I love hanging out in downtown Ithaca. I'd say the Glen is safe. If anything, NASCAR should be adding a road course or two to the schedule, particularly the Chase. They have moved ahead of Bristol in excitement in my book.
With "Sliced Bread" rumored to be going to Penske next year, I would say that gives him about a 15% chance of finally finishing Top 15 in points. What say you? Speaking of "Sliced Bread", so much for living up to that nickname!
Not sure I'd say rumored to Penske. Logano only said he had offers from two teams, one outside of Gibbs. The assumption is it's Penske, but you know what happens when we assume.
Who do you think will win the Zippo 200 & the Finger Lakes 355 at Watkins Glen?
Kurt Busch and Ambrose.
Do you think that A.J. Allmendinger should race in the NNS full-time next season instead of possibly being a start-and-park driver in the NSCS?
First of all, not sure he'll get a start-and-park ride. But if he can get a fulltime NW ride, one that would allow him to compete for the title, I'd take it.
other than gibbs who do u think offered logano a ride
My best educated guess is Penske, only because Logano talked about it being a competitive ride. Can't think of many or any others really out there. I mean, Furniture Row could go to two cars, but I wouldn't give that a competitive nod right now.
We tried to tell dad and his guys to put Vickers in the #22 over Joey. We think Brian has shown a lot more this year in his few starts!
Not sure I should digify your name with an answer here. Knowing Roger Penske, seeing his sons in this mess has to be killing him. I do agree that Vickers deserves a shot somewhere, though.
Every time I think Kyle Busch is about to have a great run, something seems to get in the way. He had a rocket at Pocono and nothing to show for it. With the Chase just a month away, is it time to be nervous?
Very nervous, particularly now that Gordon is in the mix.
Why the ovaline tracks? Why hasn't NASCAR more overtly embraced F1's turn-intensive tracks? I'm not assailing NASCAR, I'm only asking out of mere curiousity.
NASCAR traditionally is for ovals, and I doubt we'll ever see it stray far from that.
Sure everyone loves a comeback, except if the person has the last name of Busch and race in NASCAR. Then everyone, fans and media, and want said driver to fail. Thus why you did not mention Kurt. By the way, he had already signed with Penske racing for the 2007 season by this time back in 2005, prior to his suspension from Roush he had already secured his release for the 2006 season. So do not mislead the truth by saying that he was fired from Roush. If you are going to slander Kurt, you might as well go all the way and say he was arrested for drunk driving which he was not. That would be Allmendinger.
I never said he was fired by Roush. Not sure where that is coming from. He was fired by Penske, though. And the story was on AJ and Vickers, not Kurt. He would be a good comeback story as well, but he doesn't have nearly as far to come back.
If there is Heavy Rain on Saturday at Watkins Glen, will they run the Zippo 200?
I am not a weather man.
Which full-time NSCS drivers will not be racing full-time in the NSCS five years from now in your opinion?
Jeff Gordon and Bobby Labonte are the ones that come to mind.
What's the latest with regard to A.J. Allmendinger, Jeff Burton, Kurt Busch, Joey Logano, Brian Vickers, and Ryan Newman's 2013 plans?
AJ is suspended, Burton is under contract for the 31 next year, Kurt Busch wants a top ride but can't find sponsor and team to provide that, Logano has two offers on the table, one from Gibbs, Vickers is looking with part-time at MWR again available and Newman is hoping SHR finds sponsorship for him.
Any info on why Parker left BKR?
Not sure I would use the word left.
Is there that few drivers out there that people want a guy with two wins in equipment that should have that in one season?
Can you be more specific?
Has someone gotten into AJ's pills that they think Logano will help Penske?
Personally, I believe Logano is an upgrade if that were to happen.
Dave Rogers is out the door if I miss the Chase this season. Do you think Jeff Hammond can help me out next year?
Would be a shame. It's never one perseon and you two seem to get along so well.
Vickers deserves a second chance. AJ is just an idiot who took an unknown pill. All he deserves is to be comited for being stupid.
Hard to argue with that.
David, what are the chances Logano going to Penskes 22 ? i thnk he needs a change and i think he will flourish at Penske
That he was non-committal when I asked if he preferred to stay at Gibbs if he had his druthers tells me he is thinking of going somewhere.
Anybody in the Garage actually buying AJ's "a friend slipped me a pill" story?
Let's just say I am skeptical and people in position to know tell me I should be.
Any idea when Chevy will unveil their SS?
Think they pretty much did at the Martinsville test. Looks good. As for an official unveiling, haven't heard.
how serious were the RPM to Dodge talks ?
If Dodge was willing to give RPM money that RPM no longer will get from Ford because of Penske the change may have happened. But I don't think Dodge, at least those in Italy, were sold on staying in the sport.
Hi Newt, who has more say on wanting to retain Joey - Joe Gibbs or JD Gibbs?
Both have told me they want him back. Joe owns the company, so I'd give him the nod in power.
My sons are really really struggling this year. Do you think I need to take them out to the local go kart track and set them straight?
Kurt owns the local kart track.
Do you think I need to hang it up? Man these sponsors are such meany heads!
Do you think Jeff Gordon will make the Chase?
I do. I've always included him in my wild card list even when he was outside the top 20 because he's a top driver in top equipment.
what 2 teams do think are interested in Logano?
I know Gibbs is one. I would have to guess Penske is the other.
What's going on with the #43? I know it's only his 1st year, but I don't think Aric should be on the chopping block. Otherwise, who would sign him? And who would replace him?
I like Aric, but if I could get a Kurt Busch or Ryan Newman I'd jump at it. The 43 needs a driver capable of winning, not hanging around.
Are the 2013 cup cars basically the same chasis as this years cars with new sheet metal, or are they a complete overhaul?
They are the same chassis with different bodies. NASCAR is giving teams a lot of room on the bodies to make make them brand identifiable.
when will RPM make a manufacturer announcement ?
By Michigan, probably, although Dodge's announcement pretty much solidifies it will be Ford.
Where do you think David ragan will be next year?
Probably right where he is now.
will Matt Kensth drive for Joe Gibbs Racing next ? if so were Joey Logano will go?
YES. It has been done for almost two months. There is a clause in his deal at Roush that keeps him from talking about it until sometime in August. As for Joey, Gibbs has made an offer to stay and Joey told me yesterday one other team has made an offer. The guess is Penske.
Hi DavidDo you think Brian Vickers will run full time in NASCAR in 2013 and will it be for MWR. Do you think Kurt Busch will be back at Phoenix Racing.
He deserves that chance, but there aren't enough good open seats right not to say anything is a guarantee. All I know on Kurt is he has told Phoenix Racing if they can get a sponsor he will come back.
If Joey does indeed take the Penske ride (assuming that's his other offer, whether its the 22 or another full-time ride that they were preparing for Hornish next year), what are the chances Ryan Truex gets the 18 or 20 for full time in Nationwide next year? Or is it more likely they will continue with several drivers like McDowell, Wallace Jr, etc?
Probably continue with what they have.
Sliced Bread has becaome Burnt Toast. It's sad that they wont bring up a NW driver. Toast has had his chances. He flamed out.
Gee, the kid is only 22 and was thrown into the ride a year or two earlier than planned because of Stewart's switch. Do you also think Kyle Busch has flamed out? He has just one win this year and is in danger of missing the Chase.
Had Jeff Gordon flamed out before he won -- lucky at that - at Pocono? Winning isn't easy in this sport.
You really think Logano has a shot at winning another race this year??
A shot, yes. He could win at Michigan or Richmond.
You think a Team of Brad, Logano and Sam would strengthen Pesnke? That sounds like a one man team there. Team Brad with two drivers that will never get into the chase to help him.
I do. The folks at Gibbs say Logano really has become a big contributor this year. Brad needs some help there.
I'm watching the 02 race at the Glen and only 4 primary sponsors fron that race are still Primary sponsors today (Home Depot,Lowes, Cat.,Miller).Shouldn't NASCAR be doing more helping retain sponsors for teams
The best way NASCAR could help would be not to lock up so many sponsors for themselves where they can't spend their money on teams.
I think AJ was a Isolated incident. i dont think that was the only time i took the drug test since he was in nascar. do you ?
No, it wasn't the only time he took the test. He was tested frequently after the DWI in 2009.
I left out Bud from 02 lol
Thanks for catching that.
on March 2nd Andrew Murstein (co-owner of RPM ) said RPM had been contacted by other manufactures and wanting to meet with them and he said while sponsorship was down Manufacturer support was up.... so why does everyone say there a slam dunk for Ford in 2013 ?
Because manufacturer support may be up, the the money teams get goes to the top teams. Chevy, for example, gives Hendrick the largest piece of the pie with RCR second and then a smaller amount to EGR. Ford gives the top money to Roush, although Penske just took a big chunk by switching over. Doesn't leave much for other teams.
Any news on plans for JR Motorsports next year? Are they going to keep Cole Whitt on, or look for someone more talented? Is Danica going to keep running Nationwide races for them even though she's going full time Cup with Stewart?
Cole Whitt will remain in the 8. The hopeis to run two fulltime teams, with Danica and Dale Jr. splitting a third car part-time. If sponsorship can't be found for a full second team, Dale Jr., Danica and a driver to be named would fill out the lineup. Or at least that is the plan.
If Joey takes the 22 ride, what happens with Sam? I thought the assumption was that Penske would take him to NW, give him some more development time, then move him back to cup? Doesn't this seem to imply Penske has no faith in Sam?
Let't not jump the gun here, but Penske was planning to move Hornish to Cup with his NW sponsors before the Allmendinger situation came up.
Not much of an unveiling at Martinsville, what with the camoflage paint scheme. We're going to need to see grillwork and such to really get an idea of what the Chevy SS looks like. I would think Chevy will unveil the street car before they show off its NASCAR counterpart.
I'm just glad they put the Camaro in NW.
David, Do you think the Grand-Am Series could be a landing spot for A.J. once he completes the Road to Recovery?????
That is a possibility, but he told me Cup is his goal.
Target, NAPA Auto Parts, Budweiser, DuPont, M&M's, Interstate Batteries, Kellogg's, DeWalt, UPS, Pennzoil (kind of), and Motorcraft were all primary sponsors in the 2002 Watkins Glen race. And they're all still primary sponsors on a part or full time basis now.
DeWalt very minor now, Interstate Batteries a secondary sponsor, Motocraft running limited schede on the 21, UPS barely on Edwards' car, Kelloggs not as big of a role. DuPond now secondary with Gordon. I wouldn't call all of those primary.
You're my favorite reporter, Newt! Do you expect Junebug to lose the points lead this week since he is terrible at road courses? Thanks!
Not necessarily. Kenseth isn't so hot on road courses either. And Earnhardt did do better at Sonoma, and other tracks where he has struggled. And thanks for reading. I try.
Why does Fireball Montoya still have a Cup ride?
What is happening with that team is an EGR issue, not so much driver. Wouldn't surprise me to see him win this weekend.
How do you think Danica will do at Watkins Glen in the nationwide series race on how well she did at Road America?
Her effort at Road America showed just how poorly fulltime NW drivers are prepared for road courses. I would imagine she will do well.
Would you consider Rowdy be the favorite at Bristol and Richmond?
He would be among my top five at both, particularly Bristol where he has replaced brother Kurt as king.
Hello David, Do you think it is more likely that Joey leaves JGR than Newman leaves SHR????? Ryan needs sponsorship for 12 races instead of 36 that Joey would need for a 4th JGR car.
Really don't have a great feel for which direction Joey is leaning. That he said it was a tough decision and wasn't ready to say if all things are equal he would rather stay at Gibbs makes me believe he is considering another path. I still believe Stewart will piece something together for Newman.
Shouldnt NASCAR give them room on the chasssis also
I'd like to see that. The sport was born on ingenuity. I just don't see NASCAR loosening up that much.
why stay at Ford if your not getting any money ? Richard Petty in name alone would be great to market some manufactures brand ? how about Toyota ? kyle petty says its possible.
Because Chevy and Toyota aren't likely to give them much, or any, as well.
Johanna Long to the #43
Well there's that. Did you know she is either dating or very good friends with the Bama quarterback AJ McCarron?
I'd make the argument that Bad Brad Keselowski has replaced Kyle as King of Bristol at this point.
Could be right. Brad K has caught fire there.
Some say Martinsville is the hot track for Cup races; in your opinion, what track is the best for Nationwide?
I've been saying Martinsville is the best track for five years or more now. Would love to see NW there as well, but the track seems happy without it. I'd give Iowa the nod for current NW tracks.
I love your chats, but one thing I have to criticize is your man crush on Logano. He's not that Good.
Thanks, and no man crush. I just see potential there. I don't think he is great now, but I believe there is the potential to be. He's only 22.
That's it for me, folks. I'm at the garage waiting for the oil to be changed on my Jeep and I believe it is ready. Thanks for all the questions. Ask more on Twitter at @DNewtonespn if you dare.
