Howdy, all. We're back after a little summer hiatus. Good to see all your smiling faces. What's on your minds today? Go ahead and submit questions the whole hour we're in here. Let's get started.
Dave- Team with the biggest step forward in the Big 12 this year? Biggest step backward?
Biggest step forward: Texas. Biggest step backward? Baylor. I still think the Bears will be in a bowl, but 6-7 wins is my expectation. That's a far cry from a Heisman winner and a 10-win season.
It's really not a secret, so why don't you just come out and tell us; you want Chris Low's job don't you?
Haha, that didn't take long. The Big 12 and its fans constantly measures itself against the SEC. Seems like everybody gets mad anytime I mention the league. To answer your question: No, I don't want Chris Low's job. He does a great job.
Whats the latest on Oklahoma ? I AM a huge UTEP MINERS FAN and we have a heavily underrated team this year and Im coming to el paso for the game vs ou september 1st
I don't see it. Oklahoma's got a lot of question marks to start the season. The OL, DL, LBs and receivers all have a lot to prove, but even on the road, it's going to take something special for UTEP to be in that game in the fourth quarter.
DUbs, what does your practice travel schedule look like?
We rarely go to fall practices, but I've got my Week 1 assignment for game coverage. I won't be revealing it until game week, but it'll be a fun first weekend. I attended four games in the first two weeks of the season last year.
Dave,With WV fielding maybe the best offensive team it has ever had, and I think a defense that's going to surprise a lot of people as there's talent all over the field on that side of the ball, I feel WV has a very good chance at running the table and playing probably USC for the National Championship. First do you think this is a fair statement, and secondly, if we fall early at let's say Texas, but then win out and go 11-1, do you see WV having an opportunity to still go to the NC game? I do, but want to know what you think....Thank you
I'm not a WV historian, so it's hard for me to validate that first part. I disagree about the defense. It may have some talents, but the gap between Big East offenses and Big 12 offenses is enormous. I think WVU is in for a little awakening in that department. I'd be very surprised if the 'Eers finished in the top half of the league in total or scoring defense. That's not to say they can't win in spite of that. I don't about a "very good chance" but WVU could definitely go 11-1. If that happens, depending on the timing and team they lose to, the 'Eers could definitely be BCS title game-bound. In the scenario you tossed out, the Mountaineers would almost certainly play for the title.
It seems like every time I read the newspaper another OSU player has either left the program or been dismissed. Whats going on in Stillwater? When will the turnover end... or at least slow down?
It's been a rough offseason for OSU, but some of that stuff has been other sports, too. Baseball and basketball have contributed to the run of bad news. The football team hasn't had as many issues. The stat the other day about 12 players leaving from the 2010 class is troubling. They might not have played now, but in 2013-14? That's when OSU might start to feel some of that.
Yo Ubbs, what's up with West Viginia's defense? Are they Baylor circa 2011, better, worse? Haven't really seen to much of the Eers, other than them showing up against Clemson. My gut tells me they'll be good, but their D wil be the reason they drop 2/3 games, and don't get the title, in this offensively productive league. Thoughts?
Definitely better than Baylor last year, which is why I take them seriously as a Big 12 contender. Baylor was a very good team but I never thought they had a shot to win the league. WVU does. Its defense is going to give up a lot of points, but its offense is going to hang plenty, too. Probably enough to make the title race very interesting.
DUbs, are you going to be attending any non conference games?
Ubbs, how can you leave me off your top 10 RB list? Did you see the beating I put on Tech last year? I'm a healthy 245 pounds, running downhill. LB's, beware!
I love Bergeron's skills, but he's got to show me something in production. Other guys have just done more for now. Bergeron's time will come.
Ubbs, why is everyone so down on Lunt? Kid has absolutely no college experience, no Blackmon to throw to, and new faces on his Oline. Besides that, the kid is gonna be awesome!!!
I don't think very many people are down on him. I don't know who you're listening to, DTG. Folks are reasonably skeptical. I think he'll be productive and play well, but make mistakes that keeps OSU from ultimately repeating as Big 12 champs. I expect him to flirt with 4,000 passing yards.
Do you actually expect Oklahoma to be 11-0 (as you have) heading into the final week? Or is this just a case where you think they'll lose, but can't pick who they'll lose to?
Probably more the latter. There's still one more week of predictions to go ... It's worth noting that we started doing these projections before the injuries and departures on the offensive line.
Crimson clad breatheren are shouting for More Millard, More of the Time. I see it out of a TE line-up, but ball carrying FB's just aren't anywhere to be found in college ball. Will we see Millard rack up more than 200 yards rushing?
On the season, I think so, Josh. He's too good not to give him the ball a little more.
And by the way, ask WVU about ball-carrying fullbacks, though I suppose OU fans need no introduction to Owen "Runaway Beer Truck" Schmitt.
Optimus Klein and the Cats have been a burr in the saddle for The Fallen (Texas). Do you consider this to be uncanny luck on the side of the Cats or is it some unknown scepter of leadership that allows Snyder to look into the future.
K-State's mastery of Texas is truly perplexing. It was more than just Snyder, too. Ron Prince owned the Horns, too. Safe to say I know who I'll be picking in that game.
Are you going to El Paso on September 1st?
Will you ever stop under-estimating ISU?
Maybe when they find a QB. Ultimately, that's what's going to hurt them most this year. Have to have more consistency out of that position.
Didn't you at one point predict Tech to make a bowl game this season? Now, you have them going 5-7? What gives? Am I missing something?
Yeah, I think Tech has a good enough team to make a bowl, but when I started picking the games out one by one, that changed. The Big 12 is ridiculously deep this year, and I expect Tech to become a victim of that depth. Still, wouldn't surprise me much if they won 7-8 games and proved me wrong.
Ubbenator, why did you choose to live in Dallas if you're from Arkansas and schooled in Mizzou?
If I'm covering the Big 12, I want to be close to as many Big 12 schools as possible, not to mention the league offices. Dallas was the clear choice after a post-Mizzou stop at The Oklahoman in OKC for nine months.
All of your game selections has no upsets so what game do you think will be the most like upset
I do believe Kansas will knock somebody off in conference play this year. I don't see where, and I don't have the guts to pick it, but I simply think they'll be a lot better and more competitive. As such, they'll be in more games and find a way to win one and finish with 3-4 wins.
Love Landry. Love that arm. Don't love it when he decides to not play well. Which are the "hump games" that Landry will have to overcome in order to have a shot at the Heisman?
Has to beat Texas, play well and put up big numbers at WVU and close with a strong win at TCU.
He'd do himself well if he played well and routed K-State at home early in the season, too.
How is it that WVU is favored as second in the Big XII and getting into the top 15? They have a huge question mark on Defense and aren't we forgetting the lack luster performance they had against middle of the road teams in the Big East. How exactly are they supposed to compete against the likes of OU and Texas as well as some other fairly talented teams in KSU, TCU, TTU (healthy)?
I'm not as frustrated with this as some. Yes, WVU was inconsistent and barely beat some bad teams last year, and lost to a bad one in Syracuse. Well, this year's team is not last year's team. It should be better, especially in Year 2 of the offense under Dana Holgorsen. Good enough to win a whole bunch of games and contend for a Big 12 title.
Ubbs, good call on putting me in your top 25. Good call, for your sake.
Ouch. Is that a threat? No problem on the list.
Ubbs! Does OU need to be concerned with UTEP at all in week 1?
Turnovers could make it interesting, and if the offensive line gives Landry not time, there could be a concern, but Oklahoma's not losing that game. The late night kick and playing in El Paso is a concern, but I seem to remember Landry playing one of the best games of his career in that stadium against a much better opponent.
Really Ubben? You talk about how you think Red Raiders can squeeze into a bowl at 7-5, and then you have us losing to Baylor and not making a bowl? Whats up with that? If our defense can even be mediocre, our offense is good enough for 8-9 wins.
Can the defense be mediocre? From where it started last year, the road to mediocre is a long one.
Shhhhh.... Stop talking about us Ubben!!!Baylor is going back to bottom people!
You're not the only one who noticed that. Too many people writing off post-RG3 Baylor. Great program in place. Lots of talent still there, and even more coming in. Art Briles is building a great place in Waco.
Does Jalen Overstreet have a shot at anything other than the "wildcat" formation?
I don't think so. I'd be very surprised if he was a real factor in the QB race at any point, barring injuries.
Which Big XII heavyweight should be more concerned? OU with their depth issues on the offensive line? Or the Horns with the potential 3-headed monster situation at QB?
Uh, Texas. By a long, long way on that one, Derrin.
Are there any NCAA rules for these failed drug test? Seems amazing that schools can vary so wildly in how they handle these things. Pachall isn't missing any football time, while most believe that failed drug test led to the suspension of Smith and Daniels for a year at Tech and Daniels eventual being kicked from the team. Now Tubbs never said what caused these suspension so they may not be drug related, but the question still stands. Why not have a rule so that people aren't left questioning the coaches decisions and motives on handling these kids?
Nope. There's no set rules for drug tests and punishments from those tests from the NCAA. Largely up to teams and conferences. Not the best system.
Who does Coach Paul Rhoads Cyclone team knock off from the top 25 this year?
Look out, Big 12 newbies. Watch your backs. Paul Rhoads would be so proud to stick a dagger in there.
Do you think at the end of the year Justin Gilbert could be the best CB in the country?
Certainly not impossible. But you could say that about a handful of guys in this league. Most likely candidate: Carrington Byndom.
Who is the best quarterback this year in the Big 12?
hey David. while I agree with most of your RB position rankings today, I surprised to not see Baylor's Jarred Salubi anywhere on the list. What's up with that?
I've got no idea what to make of the trio at Baylor. Art Briles wants one of them to emerge and be the featured back, but it might be Salubi, it might be Seastrunk or it might be Martin. Anything could happen right now.
Ubben, I think most of your Iowa State football picks are reasonable, although I do think Iowa State will beat Baylor and Texas Tech at home. I think Jack Trice Stadium is tougher to play at now than what you're giving it credit for.
To some degree, I'd agree. ISU is a better team these days. Certainly one that must be respected. And the atmosphere in Jack Trice has been crazy. Just ask Iowa and Oklahoma State.
How much of a factor will the loss of Ben Habern and Tyler Evans on the Sooners O-line be over the course of the season?
Very, very big. The Sooners can handle it for now, but they're so thin on the line now. A couple injuries and it could get ugly on the line at OU.
I hear a lot of raggin' on my D, but giving up the fewest pts vs. both conference and top 25 teams last season has me feel really good about my 'Boys. When will the Longhorns quite spewing stats that they ran up against unranked cupcakes?
Fair points there from Stillwater. Texas' defense looked very average against OU and Baylor. Played OK against OSU but gave up some backbreakers.
Meanwhile, OSU's defense just absolutely crushed Baylor and Oklahoma.
Do you see Tyler Lockett (2011 Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year) improving this year over last year, or is reaching the same level the highest realistic expectation
He'll definitely be a lot better. By far the most dangerous guy on K-State's offense.
In the recent Big 12 media days, TCU was scheduled to play Texas on Thanksgiving. Is this actually official or just a "plan?" Word is A&M wants to schedule LSU for that day. Who gets custody?
Well, the LSU-A&M Thanksgiving date isn't happening this year. LSU plays Arkansas on the Friday after Thanksgiving. That's a pretty quick turnaround, no? I kid. Anyway, TCU is playing Texas on Thanksgiving. I'm not 100 percent sure if it's been announced yet, but it's happening.
True or False: Randle will run for more than 1500 yrds.
Tough question. I'm going to go with no, just by a hair.
What order do you see the leagues top 5 offenses falling into?
Guess off the top of my head: WVU, OU, OSU, Baylor, Tech. TCU right in the mix behind them.
Do you see Jaz Reynolds eventually getting on the field this season and solidifying the third wide receiver spot for the Sooners joining Metoyer and Stills? Or has one of the other freshmen already taken his spot?
I'm pretty surprised Reynolds is still on the team at this point, but if another freshman looks good early on, it's going to be tough for Reynolds to get back. Sterling Shepard anyone?
David, how excited would you be if the K-State v. Texas game in the last week is a conference championship game of unbeatens? I know it's not likely, but how awesome would that be?
Significantly more awesome for K-State fans by the end of it, methinks.
Ubben, if OSU beats Texas at home, does this finally get the point across to EVERYONE in the country that Texas is ridiculously overrated? (consistently)
No. And how about we let the rest of the season play out before we starting branding teams?
Why in the hell do you think Baylor is going to all of a sudden start a winning trend over TTU? Do you realize they have beat TTU once in Big 12 play?!
Because Baylor is a better team than Texas Tech this year. More often than not, better teams win. I'm not sure anybody on the field cares what happened in 2006 or 2007.
I'm putting the KU win total at 6 this season. Snide comment coming my way from you on that?
Nope. Just that I don't see it.
Who would you say are the top three quarterbacks in the Big 12 this year?
Geno Smith. Landry Jones. Collin Klein. In that order.
Ubben, you are picking some close games for WVU one against OU and the other against ISU. How does WVU stand up tall against OU then kneel down to ISU?
Because teams don't always play the same every week. How does OSU lose to Iowa State and then beat OU two weeks later by five touchdowns?
After seeing Nebraska's "Disappointing?" season in the Big 10 Last year, how do you expect other Big 12 Turncoats to fair in other conferences?
Missouri will probably win 8-9 games. Maybe challenge for the East if it gets a couple good bounces. Texas A&M will probably be 6-6 or 7-5.
Ubbs, after a great 4 year stretch, why isn't OK State doing better in recruiting?
I'm really not sure. Their class is OK right now, but they're being outrecruited pretty solidly by Baylor in 2013. Very surprising. My guess is the school's location plays into it a little bit. Pretty far from the metroplex, still.
You never seem to mention TTUs receivers. Torres/Moore/Ward are easily up there with the top of the big 12. Maybe not better than WVUs, but definitely better than OSU and TCU. Not to mention, we have a ton of depth at WR too.
Glad you mentioned that, Cameron. You'll be happy tomorrow morning if you read the blog. ...
In-n-out, 5 guys, or Whataburger?
In-N-Out by a mile.
David,How do you see Gundy and Monken including J. W. Walsh in the OSU O this year?
They'll bring him in some short-yardage situations and design some special packages that opposing defenses will have to prepare for. If I'm guessing, they don't use it much in the first few games, but debut it against Texas to keep the Horns D off balance.
Did you get a chance to see Brandon Moore, do you think he makes an impact for the Longhorns?
Haven't seen him in person (few have), but I like what I hear. He doesn't sound like an every-down type of DT, but Texas is so deep at that position, they can rotate enough to keep him fresh and allow him to consistently make his presence known when he's on the field.
Ubbs, rank the top 5 coaches in the big 12.
In no particular order: Stoops, Snyder, Rhoads, Briles, Gundy
If the NCAA can have the power to punish PSU like they did, don't they have the power to do whatever they want to TCU and other schools with drug issues?
In theory, yes, but I think we can all agree that what went on at Penn State is in a complete other stratosphere than anything that happened at TCU. Pretty silly to even mention them in the same sentence.
What's the best movie trilogy of all time? Can't choose the Godfather.
Who has more rushing yards this season for isu James white or shontrell Johnson
Really tough call there. My gut says Johnson but my head says White. I want to see Johnson on the field before I really know what he can do. He's back, but is he really 100 percent, and is he the same player?
Do you think with the addition of Mike Stoops that OU def will finish in the top 20?
It'll be close. Probably around the top 25. Big 12 offenses are obviously no joke. So much talent and so, so many plays. More than most deal with. Hard to finish near the top of the country.
This season's total number of rushing touchdowns for Optimus Klein?
Justin Brown HUGE impact for sooners?
Not a huge impact, but he'll help them a lot. Some solid punt returns and maybe 35 catches? Could be more.
Take a guess on who gets the Champions Bowl bid - Jerry or the Sugar Bowl?
My guess is a rotation between the two.
What percentage do you give WVU going undefeated this season?
I'm a Texas Tech fan reading your predictions and now I'm sad. Can I have a hug?
I'll look you up next time I'm in Lubbock.
Nostradamus predicts that TCU and WVU will not finished as expected. Nostraduams says 8-4 for both, but they will get better after their first year. Ubben's thoughts?
Hard to imagine WVU getting better in 2013 if it loses the trio of Geno, Stedman and Tavon?
OState @ KState - Good news is Blackmon will not be fielding punts. Bad news is the Syndercat's are scary with fundamentals. Should I make the 2 hour drive for this matchup and why?
Yes, that'll be a great game. Last year's was one of my favorite nights of the year.
On your top 5 Big 12 coaches you left off Mack brown....intentional?
Sort of a "what have you done for me lately?" situation. Love what Brown's done over his career, but can you really put him in the top five if you want to talk about right now? After the past two years, no way.
Will I be traveling to NYC this year?
Out of curiosity, how do you choose which questions to answer during chat?
That's it for this week, everybody. Thanks for all the questions. See you again next week!
