Chat with Brett Okamoto

Brett Okamoto
  (1:02 PM)

What's up guys? Welcome back to Wednesday's MMA chat. My apologies (and I'm sure some of you will astutely bring this up today) for missing the chat last week. I was in Denver for 150 and the UFC had an event planned during the same time so I couldn't make it. Lots to talk about this week ... let's get this out of the way early, I thought Frankie won. It was close, but definitely thought Frankie won. I've still got him as No. 6 in my pound-for-pound rankings, which you can see on the home page of ESPN/MMA right now. Alright, lets get to your questions.

Sandy (Gainesville)

Brett, very controversial fight.. I'm one of the few who gave Benson rounds 1,3,4. Just due to damage dealt and octagon control. Besides that, I think the following fights should be made? thoughts?Pettis/CerroneOkami/Shields or Sonnen/ShieldsGuillard/Barboza or Guillard/VarnerLombard/MunozWeidman/Boetsch (who else can you match Chris with if Anderson is waiting till 2013?)Edgar/Mendes (and it'd be funny because it'd look like Edgar is fighting a clone)

Brett Okamoto
  (1:03 PM)

Lots to cover here, I'll break it up into a few parts so I don't go dark for the next five minutes ...

Brett Okamoto
  (1:04 PM)

I disagree with the damage part. Ben really didn't cause a ton of damage in that fight, if you watched the PPV then you know Frankie walked over to the camera and motioned with his hands around his face like, "See? No marks this time." It was a points-based fight, which isn't always popular with fans but hey, that's how Frankie beats these lightweights and I thought he avoided damage and scored points in the majority of the fight.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:06 PM)

The fights you mentioned ... Cerrone/Pettis is a given. Asked Dana after 150 what he thought he said he liked it. It's happening. Okami/Shields ... eh, okay. That sounds about right. Sonnen just drew Forrest, which I'm not entirely crazy about but I can at least see some reasons for putting it together. Weidman, I'd give the winner of Belfort/Belcher to Weidman if Anderson doesn't end up fighting him. And Edgar/Mendes is cool, I'd like to see him fight Aldo right away but if not ... Mendes is fine, hey everyone is so high on Jimy Hettes I'd co-sign that fight, Ross Pearson would have been fun but he's moving up, winner of Cub Swanson/Charles Oliveira is good and I could really see the UFC going with that one.

matt, long beach [via mobile]

Why has dan hardy vs thiago alves never been made, who would u take??

Brett Okamoto
  (1:08 PM)

If I'm remembering timelines correctly, it's never made a ton of sense in the division. Alves had his title shot, then Hardy was waiting in the wings, then Alves kind of was hit and miss after that and Hardy was losing, losing, losing ... wouldn't be surprised if we see it eventually though. Gotta lean Alves if it happens.

Dan (NJ)

Hey Brett... Totally outraged over bendo/edagr II. wasnt a robbery but i thought edgar clearly won. i was wondering why all the writers didnt make edgar the top lightweight in the rankings (as josh gross did) even though you all scored the fight for edgar. -Also i think edgar should have a title eliminator with korean zombie and if he wins/defends the title at 145 for a while, do you think dana will let him fight straight for the lw belt almost like a gsp/silva superfight down the road? i think that us his best move although i want him to stay at 155

Brett Okamoto
  (1:10 PM)

Reason I didn't put Edgar on top is because I thought Henderson clearly beat him in the first fight. I mean really, these guys are like 1A and 1B. 10 rounds between them, all very close. But the fact Henderson won in Japan and then barely, barely lost this one in my mind, I kept him at No. 1. Edgar/Zombie is good, although I don't think they'll do that one first because Zombie has a lot of hype going behind him so they'd probably like to see him in a title fight so might not risk him losing to Edgar in a No. 1 contender fight. As far as the other stuff you mentioned, that's pretty far down the road, let's see how Frankie does at 145.

Trevor (Minneapolis)

I think you owe us at least an extra 5 minutes today after last week. Felt like a kid left at school not being picked up by my dad who thought it was more important to do a podcast or something...

John (LA)

Hey Brett, missed ya the past couple weeks...what is up with being scheduled and then your not?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:13 PM)

Here comes the guilt ... I've talked with ESPN about changing times so I don't miss these things when I'm on the road but so far it hasn't happened. Extra five minutes today approved.

jeff (romeo, MI)

Hey Brett, Do you think the UFC put the mini tourney and title shot on FOX knowing that J.Jones wouldnt be overly excited about any of those rematches and therefore "accelerating" his move to HW?? Kind of there way of nudging him up cuz the fans are already losing interest cuz besides gustaffson and maybe glover there is no one to intrigue us as fans....

Brett Okamoto
  (1:14 PM)

Nah, I don't think UFC's intentions go that deep. They were in a bad spot because injuries had kind of ravaged that card. Interest was low in the 205 bouts, so they threw it out there that whoever was "most impressive" would get a title shot to draw some eyeballs.

Tyler (Oklahoma)

I was at UFC 150, never been to a live event before that, and my boy Benson won. Good times!

Brett Okamoto
  (1:14 PM)

Saturday was a good time. The fights were terrific.

rick,tx [via mobile]

Moto. So allister gets rolled to next title fight read that jds vs cain dec 29 ,allister seemed confident in getting licsense early for volentarily complying w/ nsac?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:16 PM)

Yeah, Alistair has said all along his goal was December and then Lorenzo Fertitta (co-owner of the UFC) told me in LA he was optimistic for December but I still don't know why they felt that way. The NSAC never expressed in any way, at least that I'm aware of, they would let Alistair off the hook early. So, I don't know. Maybe the UFC tried to do some posturing through the media, see what the NSAC reaction would be, didn't like their chances so settled on Cain/JDS rematch.

Kid (Fla)

With Chael's ability to sell a fight and PPVs, do you see Chael jumping over Gustaffson (even if he beats Shogun) for a title shot vs Jon Jones?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:17 PM)

I don't, although the reasons you mention make it a distinct possibility. I think Chael beats Forrest then you have him fight Rashad. Both those guys can manufacture a rivalry even where there isn't one. That'd be a main event type fight.

Ultimate Warrior (Parts Unknown)

Frankie throwing his hat at the decision and whining over the last is bush league. If you don't like the judges decision, try to finish your opponent and throw a power punch (Maynard was already gassed).

Brett Okamoto
  (1:19 PM)

Entitled to your own opinion ... me, I see it as Frankie is already taking on a ridiculous challenge by fighting up a weight class. He has to have that style, he can't brawl with guys. That's kind of like saying the SF Giants didn't deserve to win the World Series because they did it by winning 1-run games and moving guys from second to third instead of hitting home runs. Edgar had the right to be upset that night, you train hard for months, beat the guy, and the judges gift wrap the win for your opponent. I'd be angry.

Brian (Orlando)

With the constant talk of Edgar moving to 145, if I'm Edgar, I keep that card in my back pocket for down the road still. He still has nice fights available to him at 155 - for one, I think Edgar vs Eddie Alvarez (when he ineveitably) debuts in UFC would be awesome for both. Plus, I still favor Aldo over Edgar anyway.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:20 PM)

Maybe, but right now you're pretty far away from a title shot. If you move to 145, you're probably one fight away. Frankie wants to be a champion, I think he got used to that role, so if he has a quicker route back to a belt at 145 I think he uses that card now.

Trevor (Minneapolis)

After Chael-Forrest...if/when Griffin loses, he has 1 more fight with Bonnar (for old time's sake) and then he is done, right? Dude seems like he just isn't into it anymore...

Brett Okamoto
  (1:22 PM)

I think he's into it, he's always been a gym rat ... he's just slowing down. His reaction time is not what it used to be (it was never lightning fast), he's not a power puncher so he's forced to try and win a decision every time ... I don't think it's motivation I just think it's the sport starting to pass him by. He's been around for a long time. I agree if he loses, maybe one more fight then call it a career.

Mike (LA)

So i see the fox 5 card on December 8th is becoming legendary! The 3 announced are Henderson vs Diaz (title fight), Rua vs Gustaffson, and Penn vs Mcdonald! what would you like to be the final fight on the main card?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:24 PM)

I would say Cowboy/Pettis but I want that to be a five-round main event so, no. Let's throw a heavyweight fight on there just to give the casual fans a look at the big boys. Too bad Stefan Struve isn't available, he makes for entertaining fights.

Tommy (Hilbert)

Early thoughts on Pettis/Cerrone?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:26 PM)

Crazy. Similar skill set. Both off the charts confidence-wise. Cerrone I think has a few more tools to work with but man, if you've watched this guy's career back to the WEC days you know he has a tendency to come out flat in huge fights like that. I think he's outgrown it ... but hard to say for sure. I'd kinda lean Pettis.

Matt (NJ)

The UFC has lost a fan for the near future after that debacle on Saturday. Why bother watching when you can't trust what you see? Henderson spent the last four rounds being passive, showboating, and getting punched in the face, and he WON? Now Frankie's entire career arc has been by two INCOMPETENT judges.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:27 PM)

Yeah man, it's unfortunate. The only thing I guess I can say to try and make it better is it happens in all sports. Umpires miss the tag at home, NBA officials let guys take four steps ... it happens in all sports. Don't know what else to say, it sucks.

Jim (LV)

At what point does GSP get dropped in the P4P rankings? He hasn't fought in 15 months and won't for at least 3 months more. He also hasn't stopped anybody since Jan 2009.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:29 PM)

Valid points, but the dude did also win 33 rounds in a row, nearly all of which I think were in championship fights. You don't have to be a fan of his style but he's dominant. I see the point on the 15 months thing and I know other rankings make a guy completely ineligible when that happens, but ESPN tells me he's eligible so I rank him No. 3.

@PappaFeez (Dallas)

If I told you Chris Weidman was going to fight GSP what would your 1st thought be? Major mismatch right? But AS vs GSP is "Super MEGA Fight"? Please.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:30 PM)

I think the fact Chael had success against Anderson made us all think that perhaps GSP has a better shot than we previously thought. But I still maintain Chael is a lot bigger and has a better chin than GSP, which makes him a tougher matchup for Anderson. That said, yeah fine, let's see this thing. There's nothing better than a fight that can capture the attention of the entire sports nation and that one would so, even if it's a mismatch, let's do it.

Matty-Ice (Detroit)

It gets kind of annoying when Dana and other people keep saying, "Don't leave it in the hands of the judges". I get what is meant by it, but these guys are the best in the world at what they do. Going out there and KO'ing or subbing someone isn't as simple as that. You shouldn't have to worry about fighting your ass off for 25 minutes, beating someone, and having a judge get it wrong.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:31 PM)

Completely agree.

Matty-Ice (Detroit)

Who won more convincingly to you: Frankie at 150 or Bendo at 144?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:31 PM)

I'd say Ben at 144.

Adam (Fargo, ND)

While this is more of a statement than a question, but with Jon Jones tweeting that he's "scratching his head" about his opponent after Henderson, and outright dismissing the fight that makes the most sense in Anderson Silva, then why even question it? If he doesnt like his prospects, step up and give the fans what they want!

Brett Okamoto
  (1:32 PM)

Look at you calling out the 205-pound champ. I tend to agree man, Jon is a smart guy. If he doesn't want to fight one of those four, who exactly does he want to fight?

Nathan (Vancouver)

Brett, I'M CALLING YOU OUT! A couple of times in recent chats you said Evans would be the champ at 205 if Jones wasn't around. But Evans lost the belt to Machida... So why would Evans be favored over the likes of Machida, Shogun and Henderson?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:34 PM)

I ain't scared of you Nathan. Reason I say Rashad would be champ is that his game has evolved since that loss to Machida AND people have figured out a little bit how to fight Machida better. It would still be scary because Rashad doesn't have the best chin in the world, but after that loss (which, the first loss always teaches you something) Rashad went back more to his wrestling roots. He's more explosive than Dan Henderson and has better cardio and he'd definitely beat Shogun right now, in my opinion. Just a better all around fighter. If Bones leaves any time soon I'm telling you, Rashad's getting that belt back.

tdiddy (winnipeg [via mobile]

Hope you can help with this...My brother and I are heading to Minneapolis for UFC on FX 5. I am just wondering how long we need to be there to see the whole fight card? 5 hours?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:35 PM)

I want to say I'd schedule for 6?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:36 PM)

You'd think I'd know that without a doubt but my mind is all over the place on a fight day and I lose track of time. Usually on West Coast first fight is somewhere around 4, last fight ends around 9:30-10?

Marc T (Phx)

LOVE the Fox card!! Beats just about any pay per view we've had this yr. Early thoughts on Gus/Rua and Bendo/Diaz? Like Diaz to pull it off. Unsure on Gus/Rua....still dont know what Gus is made of

Brett Okamoto
  (1:37 PM)

If you've followed me on this chat or on twitter for awhile, you know I'm a huge fan of the Diaz's style. I think it's unique and it's become more and more effective as they polish it. But I think Ben is gonna run through Diaz and Gus will run through Rua. I love both fights, but see both of them being one-sided.

Erich (Colombo, Sri Lanka)

After losing a fight that the majority of media and fans thought he won, do you think Frankie Edgar drops down to Featherweight?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:38 PM)

I absolutely do, yeah.

timothy davis (hollywood)

1. i love anderson silva, but should a champ really give himself the option of fighting only once a year? can't dana compel a title holder to fight at least 2-3x per year?2. i respect frankie edgar so much, and know every fight isn't going to be a slobberknocking brawl, but do you think the "i thought i did enough to win the decision" mentality some fighters seem to have is hurting them with judging, or just with fans?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:38 PM)

I think a lot of Silva waiting has to do with the GSP fight in November. I think the UFC would book Anderson again this year if he was open to it, but if he's saying I'd like to wait for GSP, the UFC is probably saying, ummm okay, we'd love to make that fight.

Mike (LA)

any word on werdum??

Brett Okamoto
  (1:40 PM)

Haven't heard anything on Werdum lately, but you'd expect him to get a fight very soon, right? Just no rematch with Alistair, please.

BeantownBobbyD (Boston)

I see a huge problem with the current state of MMA. They need to force action. UFC has the word "fighting" in it, Strikeforce has "strike" in it. They need to stop giving so many points for takedowns that aren't followed up with a solid ground and pound. They need to break fighters off the cage and stand them up if they aren't fighting. The rules are set up so that you can only use civilized means to get up from the ground which heavily favors wrestlers who just lay on top and "control". Stand them up, break them, make them fight. And I do appreciate the nuances of Wrestling and BJJ but that's not what UFC or Strikeforce are...

Brett Okamoto
  (1:42 PM)

Guys have got to be given time to work on the ground and the opponent who is on his back needs to work on his wrestling instead of relying on the referee to stand the fight up for him ... of course there are certain fights when I think the referee needs to stand them up. I was re-watching the Erick Silva/Charlie Brenneman fight yesterday and I thought the referee did a great job. Brenneman was visibly just trying to stall Silva against the fence and the referee broke it up in a matter of like 15-20 seconds. If they is working, let it go. If he's stalling (and usually you can tell the difference) break them up.

tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]

What the heck does (my least favorite fighter) Melvin Guillard do now. He clearly can't beat a top 10 UFC lightweight. Strikeforce? Move to 170? He has had more opportunity than any other UFC fighter to prove his worth as a top contender and he has failed each and every time. Thoughts?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:42 PM)

Can he make 145? Put down the weights and make 145.

John (Denver)

Who impressed you the most and you disappointed you the most Saturday?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:44 PM)

Impressed: Probably Frankie. Fighting a guy who weighs 20 pounds more than you is awfully hard to do at this level and he won that fight. He was awesome to watch, even though I know he never caused a ton of damage. Disappointed: Justin Lawrence. Never even thought about being a wrestler. It's good to have confidence in your standup, but this is MMA and Holloway has looked terrible on the ground. Change things up here and there.

Andy (Chicago)

What is your thoughts on Lomard coming out now and saying he was hurt? Isn't every fighter hurt somewhat?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:45 PM)

Yeah, not impressed. Maybe he was hurt, I would even give him benefit of the doubt and say okay he is hurt, but why bring it up now? Does nothing for your reputation. All of Lombard's moves since joining the UFC have been fairly questionable.

Nickel Steak (Boston)

Any chance Zuffa would send either Shields or Okami over to Strikeforce? Neither of them are going to contend at MW, and their fights always bring down the excitement level on a main card.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:47 PM)

That would be fun, but when I spoke to Lorenzo in LA I also brought up crossover fights and he told me Mir was a one-time deal. They won't be moving anyone else over from the UFC.

Alex (Boston)

What are your thoughts on this week's Rousey vs. Kaufman fight? And are you surprised that Tate vs. Kedzie is not on the televised card?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:49 PM)

I'm looking forward to it. Decided today I'd go ahead and drive over there from Las Vegas, wasn't planning on it but my fiance is having a bacherlorette party so I'd probably just be watching the dog anyway. I think Rousey is gonna make it look easy like she usually does and yes, I'm real surprised Tate didn't make the main card. This women's division is never going to grow if you don't put it on TV.

Sam (Ohio)

What are your justifications for Sonnen/Griffin? I'm not seeing too many upsides for either winner?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:50 PM)

Pressure is on Chael. He's a guy you can still see making a title run, Forrest just wants decent fights. Chael isn't a power puncher and I know the UFC is well aware there's no reason to put Forrest in there with a real KO threat anymore. If Chael wins, Forrest is still that name you can use to start to build a title run on.

Marc T (Phx)

I'm really trying to talk myself into Jones/Hendo but just cant get excited. Its like we already know the outcome. Love Hendo but see him getting submitted in 2nd or 3rd max. Can u convince me otherwise? Spare me "He has the H Bomb"

Brett Okamoto
  (1:51 PM)

H Bomb. That's all I got.

joemets102 (Stratford)

How does the Sonnen vs Forest matchup make any sense? If Sonnen wins that fight he should not get a title shot. He would still have to win at least 1 more over a top 5 fighter at 205. Thoughts?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:52 PM)

Yeah, piggybacking on what I just said ... I don't think Chael gets a title shot after one win over Forrest. But it recognizes him as a light heavyweight in a general way and sets up a bigger, possibly No. 1 contender-style fight, which I think should be against Rashad.

Matt (NJ)

Can Chael make a run at LHW?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:52 PM)

We'll have to see what he looks like with the added bulk. He was pretty lean at 185, so I think he'll still look pretty athletic at 205 ...

hector (chicago)

cain will destroy jds! both had a bummed knee so of course the advantage belongs to the striker. cant wait

Brett Okamoto
  (1:53 PM)

Love Cain's style of fighting, but I think JDS makes it 2-0 over him.

BDG (Fla)

Bendo is a terrible matchup for Diaz, if Bendo fights a smart fight and uses his wrestling more. Bendo is nearly impossible to submit, and I think he can GnP the life out of Diaz. Thoughts on Bendo being a bad matchup for Diaz?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:54 PM)

Yep, that's why I have him winning pretty easy over Nate. Like I said, love watching the Diaz style. Their boxing has always been good but it's evolved now. You watch Nate fight Cerrone and Nick fight B.J., that boxing style is just a lot to deal with. But Nate has had trouble in his career with big, strong wrestlers and that's exactly what Ben is.

joemets102 (Stratford)

Why does the UFC allow Silva to put the 185 belt on hold for so long . Every belt should be defended 3 times a year and if you can't then you either get stripped or vacate the title. Same thing with GSP and the 170 belt. The finally get an intrim belt going, and then they allow Condit to wait months for GSP, that makes no sense. Complete waste of having an intrim belt.

Brett Okamoto
  (1:56 PM)

What screwed up the whole welterweight picture was Nick Diaz getting suspended. If that hadn't happened, Condit would have fought Diaz again, remember? And that made sense, because the first fight was very close, I actually scored it for Nick. Anderson has been hurt, so that's why he hadn't fought in a long time prior to 148. I expect Renan Barao to defend the interim 135 belt.

Mike (LA)

i think if Bisping beats brian stann in a good fight. he should get the title shot vs. Anderson Silva while Weidman fights the winner of Belcher and Belfort. how do you think the middleweight mess should be sorted out?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:57 PM)

Wow, I almost never see support for a Bisping title shot. I need to regroup my thoughts here, not used to answering this question. I think Bisping is up there and I actually would give it to him first only because it gives Weidman a chance to gain more experience and build his name.

Jared (Tucson)

Woo-hoo! Love the Giants shout out, except that they went yard all postseason long including 2 bombs by Cody Ross off Doc Halladay.

@liqmiquchi (FLA)

Can we name the Forrest vs Chael fight the TRT THROWDOWN. Can you think of another fight where both guys were known to be on TRT?

Brett Okamoto
  (1:58 PM)

I ... can not. At least we know they're on a level playing field.

JD (VA)

Thoughts on Mayhem Miller's latest incident?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:00 PM)

Similar to most media members, I wish him the best. My interactions with him have always been positive and it's true, you read it around the MMA websites, the guy is actually really intelligent when you have a conversation with him. That said, I'm not making excuses for him. He trashed a church, that's pretty stupid whether you're religious or not.

Duff (Minnesota)

So the UFC finally committed to JDS and Cain, do you think it took so long, because they wanted the 'Reem, but didn't see him getting a conditional license?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:01 PM)

That's exactly what happened. If anything, this tells us he's getting an immediate title shot when he returns so all it does is postpone things a bit.

Stoke (Oregon)

Remember when Jon Jones got hit by Machida and practically started crying? I do. And when he gets hit by Hendo the's going to get knocked out. Then Jones will fight Gustaffson and lose and we'll talk about him like he's Demian Maia.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:02 PM)

Why do you hate JJ? I don't remember it that way, I remember him getting his defense up and tying Machida into a clinch. Then I remember him taking him down, opening a cut with an elbow and submitting him a little bit later.

suave (philippines)

sup brett? where's gegard? is he injured?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:03 PM)

Yeah Mousasi had a knee injury, although I believe he's resumed training by now.

Jon Anik (Las Vegas)

Just wanted to show my support, B, to you and your chatters. And a quick thought on Henderson-Edgar. Judging will forever be a part of MMA, so I'll never quite understand the huge uproar following relatively close fights. I had it 48-47, Edgar. But Henderson did more damage, seemed to be the aggressor w/ his footwork at times. Neither party had a sense of urgency in the 5th. Gotta move on.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:04 PM)

JA ladies and gentlemen, and Jon I had the fight scored the same way. Moving on, but feel for Frankie. You put the work in, you fight a brilliant fight against a tough as nails competitor, you want the W on your resume.

Roberto (Boston)

Where did they dig up Buddy Roberts, Bumfights?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:05 PM)

Haha, good post. But did you guys actually see that Buddy tagged Okami several times and basically forced him to clinch up with him. Had Okami not been able to get it to the ground, seriously, who knows what ol Buddy would have been able to pull off.

Kevin (Mile High)

Early line predictions on the Dec. Fox card?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:05 PM)

Yes I love these, even though I got criticized terribly on my Anderson/Weidman line ...

Brett Okamoto
  (2:05 PM)

Henderson -220, Diaz +155

Brett Okamoto
  (2:06 PM)

Gustafsson -115, Shogun +105

Brett Okamoto
  (2:06 PM)

MacDonald -290, Penn +210

Brett Okamoto
  (2:07 PM)

Yeah?

Larry (Newark-on-Trent, UK)

Hello Brett. Assuming Bones gets past Hendo, will a quick turnaround fight with Machida be on free TV? Thanks!

Brett Okamoto
  (2:08 PM)

I've personally always thought it wouldn't be a terrible idea to put Jon Jones on Fox just because his style is the kind you want casual fans to see and he's obviously very marketable. And, since you already had that fight with Machida so the PPV numbers potentially won't be off the charts, it would be a good matchup to do on free TV. I'd be down for it, but I'm not a businessman.

Josh (LA)

Mark hunt vs lavar Johnson, opening fight on that fox card. Buy or sell?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:09 PM)

No kidding, throwing Mark Hunt out for that answer crossed my mind but I went with Struve instead. The only thing is Hunt doesn't really look like a pro MMA fighter and he gasses easily, so not sure if you want to showcase that to potential new fans on Fox.

brandan (charlottesville)

what do you see next for the kaufmann vs. rousey winner? who is even next in line, or in the mix? can cyborg even make 135 when she returns?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:11 PM)

She told another website she wants Rousey to move up. I think the pressure is on her to move down, coming off a suspension. That's really the only interesting fight for Rousey if she wins Saturday though, so wouldn't be surprised to see Strikeforce figure it out. Maybe they do catchweight because honestly, few people care about the women's belts anyway because the divisions are so thin.

Kid (FLA)

Was Ed Herman's game plan of constantly clinching w/ Jake Shields one of the dumbest gameplans you can remember? Made ZERO sense.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:11 PM)

Yep, made no sense at all. But that was basically the fight I thought we were going to see. Jiu-jitsu player in Ed Herman, fighting a superior, conservative wrestler in Jake Shields with good submission defense. That was the exact fight we should have expected.

Ultimate Warrior (Parts Unknown)

Brett, with all due respect, making a baseball to fighting comparison is way off. There is no judging whether a guy scores or not in baseball, if he reaches home and touches the base, it's a run. Frankie looked to score points most of the fight, Bendo looked to hurt him. I'm going to give a hard kick to the legs and a clean uppercut to the chin more than 10 jabs to the face and chest that do nothing. In fighting, not all strikes are the same, in baseball, all runs are the same.

Brett Okamoto

I see your point, well said Ultimate Warrior. But, in that particular matchup, you can not realistically expect Frankie to sit on his punches and leave himself open to counters. Only way he beats Hendo is to stick and move and be elusive. It's why some people hate to watch Floyd Mayweather fight, but I enjoy it. Hit and don't be hit. I do see your point though, I really do. But when you've got a featherweight fighting a welterweight, it changes things a little.

BDG (FLA)

Sorry Diaz fans, but Henderson is going to beat up Diaz rather handily. Bendo is a TERRIBLE matchup for Diaz, and will ground and pound on Diaz all night long.

Roberto (Boston)

Is it true the Diaz brothers are going to be on the upcoming season of TUF as guest coaches? I haven't watched TUF in years, but that might get me to tune in.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:14 PM)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Roy Nelson had them come in.

Jon (Florida)

Wanderlai Silva says his next fight is signed. Who do you think it is? Weidman? Lombard? maybe even Rashad? Or maybe somebody else??

Brett Okamoto
  (2:15 PM)

Yeah, Dana White said they had a talk and he's signed. I honestly haven't given much thought to who it could be. They're kind of running out of interesting (but safe) fights for Wandy. Still can't believe the original plan was to have him fight Vitor, I did not want to see that carnage.

Josh (LA)

Melvin to strikeforce, if it happened, how many fights till they give him to El Nino?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:16 PM)

If it happened, which it won't for the reasons I mentioned earlier, 0. You're not gonna have him fight some no-name Strikeforce guy before having the fight people want to see.

Jeremy (Portland)

Did Lorenzo say why they wouldn't have any more crossovers to SF? What exactly is the plan then? Strike Force is actually worse now then when the UFC bought it.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:18 PM)

It's all behind-the-scenes business. They have that deal with Fox now, which doesn't mean they can't run things like they have, but Lorenzo said he had talks with Fox about taking a guy off the UFC roster and having him fight on Showtime. Same reason the Strikeforce champions can't just split for UFC, Zuffa has a contractual obligation to put together a product for Showtime and can't steal its talent.

Jared (Tucson)

Does Pacquiao's loss make Mayweather-Pacquiao more or less likely to happen?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:18 PM)

Supposedly the biggest key is getting 50 cent involved. Ah, boxing.

Kenneth (Marietta, GA)

Haven't seen him mentioned in awhile, but what's next for Guida?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:19 PM)

The undercard. Or second fight on the main card of an FX or Fuel show.

josh (tn)

could you ever get a ufc fighter on the chat

Brett Okamoto
  (2:19 PM)

Am I not doing it for ya? I probably could if you guys wanted it.

Matt (wisconsin)

hey Brett, how many ppv buys did UFC 148 do? Do you think that UFC 151 could have more?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:21 PM)

Reportedly did around 1 million, which is good but short of expectations. No way 151 beats that.

Nick (St. Louis, MO)

I am the biggest Dana White fan/kool-ade drinker I know, but enough with "don't leave it in the hands of the judges". If that is your only go-to excuse for inexcusable judging then rounds should be eliminated and fights should go until someone is finished. Bad judging is bad judging.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:21 PM)

That's kind of his go-to, but Dana has blasted judges before. I mean really, what do you want the guy to say? It goes down as a loss. He's paid fighters their win bonuses before after terrible decisions.

Chuck (Il)

Brett - Was that you in the white shirt and black tie at the desk just outside the cage on Sat. ?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:22 PM)

It had a little purple in it because I was in Rockies country, but yeah.

FRB (N.C)

Wandy's next fight will be w/ Cote

Brett Okamoto
  (2:23 PM)

I thought about that but ... I mean ... no one cares about that fight.

Dominic (NM)

Please can you explain to me why Melvin Guillard seems to always dominate the fight ....... And then get beat.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:24 PM)

At 150, I think he dominated early because Donald was still thinking about how awesome his walkout was. He kind of came out and was going through the motions and Guillard had nothing to lose and landed a wide open left hook that Donald basically walked into. Guillard is always going to be a handful early in a fightin general because you're probably not ready for his speed.

Jay (Potown)

If GSP wins then declines the fight with Silva, what does Silva do next? Man up and do what he has been asking GSP to do? Move up and fight Bones?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:25 PM)

No. He'll defend his belt. Pretty much given up on Anderson moving up in weight for now. Nothing coming out of his camp or the UFC suggests he's even considering it.

RJB (Tucson)

Would Money May beat his weight class equivilent in UFC? or would it be similar to when Tooney (I think i spelled that guys name right) fought in the MMA?

Brett Okamoto
  (2:25 PM)

It would be not quite as horrible to watch as Toney, but Money would get beat. It's a different sport.

Tom (Philadelphia, PA)

Why do you think GSP is so popular? People just seem to complain about his fighting style, yet he's considered one of the sports biggest stars.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:27 PM)

He's got a great history. Every time he fights you roll the clip of him on his knees begging for the title shot, he's got the look the karate bandana on his head as he walks in, he's professional, he looks like an action figure ... his fights have been pretty boring for awhile though.

Brian (FLA)

How tired was the altitude commentary at 150? I mean when athletes come into play the Nuggets or Avalanche you don't hear that nonsense - because their professional athletes and in should be in top shape.

Brett Okamoto
  (2:28 PM)

I gotta agree with that. Man. Seemed like that got brought up every five minutes in Denver. I wasn't even really planning on asking about it but by the end of the week, I could tell you what just about every one of those 22 dudes did to get ready for the altitude.

Eric (NJ)

Still wearing Rockies stuff, as a Mets fan... much respect

Brett Okamoto
  (2:29 PM)

I appreciate that and we'll go ahead and use it to close. You guys were great as always. Enjoy Strikeforce if you're planning to watch this weekend and follow me on twitter, @bokamotoESPN for more commentary, updates, sad Rockies comments, things of that nature. Later.
