Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
 (11:59 AM)

Greetings from Reliant Stadium, folks. Thanks for coming. A quick warning: Andre Johnson may come for a small interview. (How's that for a name drop?) So I may need to excuse myself for a bit. I thought he would suffice as an excuse for an absence. I'll then return and tack on missed time. Deal?

Justin R. (Centreville, Md)

Paul,Do you think that the Titans will carry 3 all season or maybe look to trade Rusty Smith to a team looking for backup QB depth?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:00 PM)

I think he's be scooped up if cut, but I don't see a lot of trade value. They could try. I expect they anticipate Smith backing up Jake Locker in 2013 and moving Matt Hasselbeck after the season.

Ben (Conover, WI)

What do you think of Mike and Mike predicting the Jags will only win 3-6 games this year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:01 PM)

I'm not real big on reacting to predictions. They could be right. But they haven't seen the Jaguars up close either. Very fashionable to pick the Jags to be terrible.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:02 PM)

Here is Mr. Johnson, please excuse me. He sends his greetings.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:12 PM)

And we're back. Thanks for your patience.

Beau (Chattanooga)

Now that you've visited all the camps which AFC S. team do you think would make the most compelling season of Hard Knocks so far if HBO were filming them?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:14 PM)

No. These teams are all relatively bland. No Jets-style of Chad-style story lines. But behind the scenes with any team it's compelling.

Brad (Louisville, KY)

How will the Colts use Mewelde Moore this season?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:14 PM)

First, he has to make the team. Then he may be the third-down back.

Junior (Arkansas)

Why won't the Jags just trade MJD? He clearly is only going to hurt the team, albeit his request seems sensible. They can get something for him, remove the criticism that comes with distraction, and allow their young backs to develop with their QB and receivers. Your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:16 PM)

Who's lining up to trade for a disgruntled running back? Also, the team is not distracted. It's a myth that a guy missing automatically throws a team into disarray. If you are on the field with a new coaching staff trying to make the team and/or get better, you aren't looking around saying, "Oh, my God, oh my God, MJD isn't here. What do we do? WHAT DO WE DO?"

jake (Columbia University)

I am from New Jersey, and a huge Titans fan...It's like we are the same person.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:16 PM)

You must also be a very handsome man! Roar Lions, Roar.

Brett (Shreveport)

PK, you were recently at Jags camp and on the SVP show you were asked to assess Blain Gabbert's progress, "You said not good if he keeps spraying balls in the dirt." I assumed from that blurb he wasn't doing well. I checked on some other outlets how that particular practice went, and it was reported he went 12 for 16 and showed improvement, the pass in the dirt was the first in that practice. I'm wondering why you chose to go for a cheap one liner at the kid's expense instead of making an accurate report.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:18 PM)

I accurately reported what I saw and I wasn't talking about just one practice. While I was there, a random pass nowhere near a receiver was still too frequent. My overall assessment was that he was better, but no dramatically so in the way I thought I might see after an offseason with the new coaches.

Joseph (Santa Cruz)

How has Justin Blackmon looked in practice? I wasn't a big fan of the pick when it happened, because I don't see him being a superstar, which is what a WR should be if they are drafted that high. Am I being to hard on Blackmon? Is he talented enough to be a top echelon WR in the NFL? Thank you.

Trip (Jacksonville)

Cecil Shorts III has looked mighty impressive the last few weeks. Do you think he could be a contributor this season and maybe a long term starter for the future?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:19 PM)

He had a bit of stage fright last season. Reasonable to still wonder if he's past that.

Rah -Steam (hackensack, N.J.)

Which young defensive player on the Colts do you see stepping up and making a name for himself? There should be plenty of opportunities and I expect that Dfense will be better than prescribed.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:21 PM)

I liked what Kavell Conner did the other day. He may have more upside than I thought. There isn't a lot of young talent to choose from as they drafted so much offense. Drake Nevis is intriguing on the Dline for sure.

Alex (England)

What do you make of the Colts young receivers such as Brazill, Hilton? Do you also see some of the outsides like Kris Adams, Cosby etc making the 53 ahead of Donnie Avery?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:22 PM)

I'm not big on Donnie Avery and would think he's losing ground. I like Cosby as potential returner, but he ranked real low at WR when I was there. I am not buying Adams as more than a practice squad guy.

mike (tennessee )

why do you think senderrick marks is getting first team snaps over klug and mike martin?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:22 PM)

Marks is a run-stuffer. Run stuffers play first down. Klug and Martin are better pass rushers. Pass rushers play later downs.

Brian (Cville, VA )

PK, if Eugene Monroe really has a concussion our O-line is in awful shape. Don't tell me the turnstyle that is Guy Whimper is any type of fix. Give me some hope man!

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:23 PM)

If Monroe is out, it doesn't appear Whimper would play with the firsts. That's good that they wouldn't put him there. But then why did they re-sign him?

Shane (Waco)

What do you think our realistic expectations should be for the Texans. I see the Titans as being a big threat in the division. Should we be worried about the Colts? Bulls On Parade!!!!

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:23 PM)

It's realistic to expect they win the division and advance in the playoffs.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Reports from Jags camp this week are touting the performance of Marcedes Lewis. Mularkey has stated he will be an integral part of the offense. You hate to rely on a TE as a lynch pin to your success but in your estimation will the success of Marcedes open the door for the WRs or vice versa?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:25 PM)

Why not rely? Works for New England. Laurent Robinson and Justin Blackmon should make teams defend the outside in a way they didn't have to last year. That certainly benefits Lewis and Thomas or whoever is in the slot if it's not Blackmon.

Alex (Houston)

I know wade phillips' defenses typically don't do as well the second year but do you see that happening to the texans or will the defense remain dominate?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:25 PM)

This should be a very good defense.

Zoltan Paksa (Budapest, Hungary)

Which is the real Mike Thomas? The guy who struggled in the entire camp - or the the one who played very well vs the Giants?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:26 PM)

It's time for him to answer that question.

Chris (Tennessee)

So we still have big questions about the Titans' pass rush after the Wimbley signing ... if they had signed Mario Williams would we still have the same worries?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:27 PM)

Probably. Mario Williams is great, but he doesn't play multiple spots at the same time.

Justin (The Office)

With Dwayne Allen playing the F; do you think he'll get some goal line rushing attempts this season?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:27 PM)

Maybe. But I bet Delone Carter is primary in that situation.

joe (houston)

Hey Paul, do you get the feeling that the drafting of Mercilus was because the Texans deep down feel they wont resign Barwin?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:28 PM)

No, it's because they didn't re-sign Mario Williams. You need three.

Fred (Jacksonville, FL)

Coby Fleener vs Dwayne Allen. Who would you rather have on your fantasy team for the year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:29 PM)

Fleener.

Josh (Nashville)

Does the length of Roger Goodells decision over Kenny Britt worry you? does it signal a harsh suspension coming or is Goodell just postponing his decision to mess with me?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:29 PM)

There is absolutely nothing to be read into here.

Chris (Tennessee)

Derrick Morgan - injury hangover, lack of physical skills, lack of confidence - what's his deal?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:31 PM)

If we only knew.

Jack (San Diego)

How many games do you see Britt being suspended for?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:32 PM)

Two or three.

Awayne (Indy)

Love the idea of more neutral site pre season games.help market teams to new markets and hope they adopt a team as their own.I know there are not enough sights to host all pre season games but is this a good way for the NFL to spread into mid market level areas?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:32 PM)

The NFL is not having trouble being broadly marketed.

Maurice Jones-Drew (Somewhere)

When will the fans start to hate me/the mainstream media starts to really critisize me because of my holdout?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:33 PM)

I'm mainstream media. I've been critical. I think most media has been critical.

Clint Session (A place of dire concern)

PK.....let's level with each other brother...this is looking rough. Give me your thoughts on what % of a chance is there I ever see the field again?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:34 PM)

At this point, I think it'll be a surprise if you play again.

Paul (Ottawa, Canada)

Thoughts on Chuck Pagano after seeing him in camp?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:37 PM)

Like him. Think he's got a direction, confidence and swagger that are all contagious. Needs some patience.

Corey (Fantasy Land)

can we expect constant check downs and screens for chris johnson this season?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:37 PM)

As disinterested as he looked in catching the ball in Seattle, I hope not.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

If MJD doesn't report before the season opener, is it more likely that he starts the year off slow/gets injured, or because of his rep for keeping himself in such tremendous shape, it wouldn't affect him?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:39 PM)

Guys who hold out seem to get hurt more frequently. No matter how good shape he's in, it's not the same shape you are in if you've been in camp.

James (Hendersonville)

Who would the Texans rather have at 100% on opening day, Watt or Cody?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:40 PM)

Seriously? Watt by miles and miles.

Derek T (Chat, TN)

Why do you think the Titans are dragging their feet with Bironas? They can't be worried that he'd all of a sudden fall apart after so many consistent seasons.....

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:41 PM)

Dragging their feet? C'mon. He's under contract until March of 2013. And they can hold him with a franchise tag. There is no ticking clock here.

Shane (Waco)

Since you have been at camp and I heve not, who do you see as a standout as far as the young WR. Is Martin as physical as #80?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:42 PM)

You think a fourth-round kid's going to show up and be as physical as one of the best physical receivers in the game?

Brian (Cville, VA )

Give us an undrafted rookie that you see making the biggest impact on the AFC South this year. Obviously no one will change the world, but who's got the biggest upside you've seen?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:43 PM)

I am big on two in Jacksonville -- WR Kevin Elliott and LB Julian Stanford.

Alex (England)

Do you have any hopes at all for the colts defence this year? I am expecting to see an improvement which wouldn't be hard but obviously concerned about the secondary. I certainly see us at least being competitive. What are your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:44 PM)

I don't think it'll be absolutely awful. I think between the talent the Colts do have and the scheme, it'll work some.

Travis Henry (Looking for work)

Could the Colts be interested in a veteran like me?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:44 PM)

No way. The Colts have the veterans they want in place. From there, it's going to be kids.

Brian (Cville, VA )

Can you give us a list of the 5 most underrated AFC South players?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:48 PM)

In no order, here are four: HOU guard Wade Smith, TEN TE Craig Stevens, JAX CB Kevin Rutland, HOU FB James Casey.

D-Ray (Nashville)

Some people might think it was a fluke, but I'm gonna show Ringer and Harper that they have to be productive if they want to beat me out of of a job. But who do you think should be more worried...me or them?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:48 PM)

You. Let's not get crazy over second halves of preseason games.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Paul, do you think the Jacksonville punter (Anger) provides a great amount of upgrade from what the Jaguars had before at punter?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:49 PM)

He does. But that doesn't justify the draft spot.

Trip (Jacksonville)

How is Justin Blackmon from the media's standpoint? Clearly he makes some good subject matter for reporting, but how is he as an interviewee?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:49 PM)

I spent some time with him during OTAs and he was good.

Peter (Mesa, AZ)

Can you rank the 4 teams receiving corps?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:50 PM)

TEN, HOU, IND, JAX I think.

Blueman (Indy)

Colts are interested in hosting another SuperBowl. Everything went almost as well as it possibly could last time. Was it enough to think they can pull it off again?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:50 PM)

Indy will absolutely get another Super Bowl.

Trip (Jacksonville)

Paul are you giving in to the people's request of only answering 1 question per person per chat? That's no fun.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:51 PM)

Again, I look at the questions, not the names. I take the next question I like and have something to say about, whether it from the same person over and over or a different person every time.

Cecil Shorts III (Everbank) [via mobile]

Maybe I should wear shades during the regular season so the lights and stage don't look so scary.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:51 PM)

Whatever works.

Adam (Louisville, KY)

Jerry Hughes looked like a serviceable OLB against St. Louis without receiving much camp buzz. Has he looked solid in the transition with your time up there, or was it more telling of how badly the Rams were playing?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:52 PM)

Arrow is up, but it couldn't really go down and it's still early.

Trip (Jacksonville)

Of Kevin Elliot and Julian Stanford, do either make the team or are they both practice squad guys?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:52 PM)

I won't be surprised if both make the team.

Jay (Houston)

Texans just reached an agreement with Duane Brown - one down, 2 to go

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:53 PM)

Very good news for them.

Phil (Tome City, Miyagi, Japan)

How has Knighton looked in camp so far? How is the eye injury coming along? How is his weight?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:53 PM)

His weight is way down, he looks great. Eye is fine.

Brian (Cville, VA )

Making my first trip to back-to-back Jags games this year. Give me a place I must go eat in Jax...please PK!

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:53 PM)

If sky's the limit, Marker 32.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:56 PM)

Camp Confidential: Houston Texans

Fred (Jacksonville, FL)

What do you know about Andre Branch? Do you think he has any potential to turn in a 8+ sack season like some of the rookies did last year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:57 PM)

He's very fast and looks like he can be an effective edge rusher. I can't predict his stats.

Doug (MD)

I've been having a hard time figuring out what kind of player Allen is... who would you compare him to? Gates? Davis? Gronk?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:58 PM)

No, a better Chris Cooley or Frank Wycheck. (Credit the shoutout, Frankie. I know you're reading.)

Brian (Cville, VA )

PK, if Clint Session never plays again....who gets the money? Do the Jags get out of the deal, but Session keeps all of his salary? How do things like that work? Rough deal for Session.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:59 PM)

The bonus and guarantees he got and keeps. They'd have to reach a settlement on what remains due as he can't be cut hurt.

Reid (Jackson TN)

Darius Reynaud's chances of making the Titans? Seems to run with a purpose, and is hungry for the opportunity. Frankly the Titans need someone to push CJ for carries, and with the Ringer/Harper not scaring anybody, they could really use a guy to step into the mix to shake things up.. agree?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:59 PM)

It was the second half of a preseason game. Please maintain perspective.

Zac (The Bay)

Who are these people asking about kickers/punters... ? With Angerer out, who's the lead to step in @MLB?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:01 PM)

Freeman, Fokou now figure into Colts' plans

Reid (Jackson TN)

With the Titans having decent WR Depth. Any chance a Williams, Hawkins, Mariani gets dealt to a team that is lacking in depth, such as the Cowboys?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:02 PM)

If you have depth, it's good. You don't run to give it away. Mariani's not a guy people want as a receiver, I don't think.

Mr. Manning (Denver)

Hey Pete, you stopping by here after Houston? I'd love to catch a steak and a movie if you've got the time.

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:03 PM)

Let me shuffle my travel.

Brian (Cville, VA )

PK, give us one player from each team (non-QB) that will crush the team if they get injured.

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:06 PM)

How about one offense, one defense? Houston -- Duane Brown and Brian Cushing; Indianapolis -- Reggie Wayne and Jerraud Powers; Jacksonville -- Uche Nwaneri and Jeremy Mincey; Tennessee -- Micheal Roos and Jason McCourty.

James (Charlotte, NC)

Thoughts on Jag's RB depth after Jennings?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:08 PM)

Not bad considering you're technically talking about your third and fourth guy in Montell Owens and Jalen Parmele.

its (game time)

what do you think of newton gets to start at RT for texans this Saturday.....also keenum gets to play with 2nd team

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:08 PM)

No big deal. Watch it get shuffled again next week. Bet Brooks starts.

John McClain (Houston)

Hey Pope, finish that dang chat, we got a lunch to grab! You okay with Lubys?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:09 PM)

No Lubys. But I am in. Thanks to all. See you next week.
