Good afternoon. Hope all is well.
Gators, top, bottom or middle of the pack again this year in the East? Also, better chance of winning their first SEC game(s) this year, A&M or Mizzou?
I have Florida finishing third this season in the East. Should be very good on defense and will be more physical on offense and more committed to running the ball. If Georgia has the number of starters suspended that has been reported, I'd go with Missouri.
Who do you see as the break out Offensive and Defensive stars for Alabama?
On offense, I'll go with Cyrus Kouandjio at left tackle and and T.J. Yeldon at running back. On defense, I'd say Adrian Hubbard at outside linebacker and Trey DePriest at linebacker. I also think cornerback Dee Milliner will go from a very good player to a great player.
What do you make of Ric "Nature Boy" Flair picking the Gamecocks to win it all? realistic, delusional, somewhere in between?
The Nature Boy loves Spurrier. I don't see the Gamecocks winning it all. I could see them getting to 10 or 11 wins again, but not winning it all. I'd say the Gamecocks' chances of winning the national title are about as good as the Nature Boy becoming world heavyweight champion again.
With zachs deep threat and a improved o-line do you see lsu having two 1,000 yrd rushers
No, I think the Tigers will use too many running backs to have two 1,000-yard rushers. You might see four guys go over 500 or 600 yards.
Do you think that this season Trovon Reed will finally live up to all the hype, and become the all-sec receiver he is meant to be?
I think Auburn would settle for his becoming a consistent threat to complement Emory Blake and make some big plays after the catch.
Your thoughts on Jalen Collins? Seems he should be a better cover corner than TM7 and with Odel Beckham returning kicks, the only thing we need is someone to step into the nickle back spot
Even before Mathieu was dismissed, Collins was going to play a lot at corner when the Tigers were in their nickel package. I know Chavis was very high on Collins coming out of the spring. Beckham is a very good player, but he's not the difference-maker Mathieu was in the return game.
With Miss State's o-line being much improved from last year (and hopefully healthy) Do you see the dawgs offense being leaps and bounds better than last year.
They need to be if they're going to make a move in the West. I think that's the key for them this season, being able to protect Tyler Russell. They have a very impressive stable of running backs, and the senior receivers need to play like seniors with some help from redshirt freshman Joe Morrow.
Does the Driskel injury open up the door even more for Brissett?
I sort of thought Brissett would be the starter anyway. That said, I also felt both guys would end up playing in that first game. It just doesn't sound like one has separated from the other.
Breakout player on Offense and Defensive for Auburn? D-line very under-rated IMO!
On offense, I'll go with tackle Greg Robinson and running back Tre Mason. On defense, I like defensive end Dee Ford and safety Jermaine Whitehead.
Your thoughts on Landon Collin's chances of earning a spot in either Nickle or Dime with the loss of Dixon at Corner and Jarrick Williams getting injured? Or do you think he stays a special teams standout this year ?
Saban won't hesitate to play Collins back there if he thinks he's his best option. It may take him a while to learn everything he needs to know to play back there, but I say his talent dictates that he plays some on defense this season.
Can the Vols passing game make up for a lacking run game?
The hope is that the running game has improved, and it certainly needs to. So far in camp, Rajion Neal has looked like an SEC running back. The offensive line has taken it personally that the Vols were so poor in the run game last season. The passing game should be very explosive, but if the Vols can average 130 yards or more per game running the ball, they have a chance to do some real damage on offense this season.
Is Bobby P a legit contender for the job when Joker gets fired at the end of the season? or will we be doomed to forgetting football exists for a few more years?
I'm not as convinced as you that Joker will get fired after the season. If he does, I could see Kentucky taking a look at Petrino, although that would be a hard trigger to pull.
chris - we get that the Honey Badger is (was) a big story, but when are we going to have a HB-free day and actually have articles just about football?
I feel your pain. I'm about Honey Badger-ed out myself.
Spurrier says Jerrell Adams already has the body of a stud NFL tight end. He had 84 yards in the scrimmage. Have you seen him, what do you think? Also Shaq Roland had a big catch in the scrimmage, could the Gamecocks have a better receiving corps than we are getting credit for?
Somebody inside the South Carolina program told me that Adams had by far been the most impressive freshmen of the bunch. I have not seen him in practice, but everything I hear about him leads me to believe that he's going to play a lot this season and be a big part of the passing game. Still, losing a go-to guy like Jeffery is a blow. Think about how many times he just went up and made plays. I'm not sure they have that guy this season.
Can Vanderbilt actually contend for the SEC East title this year?
I would be very surprised to see Vanderbilt contend for the East title, but everything goes right, I could see the Commodores getting to three or four SEC wins.
I know this is a tough question, but who do you think is the best LB in the SEC?
Jarvis Jones is the best one, although he's an outside linebacker in the 3-4.
Chris, why is it that SEC is afraid to play USC? And please don't give me a lame excuse. USC is willing to play anyone, anywhere, anytime. They've proven that. While the SEC has proven they'll only play D-2 schools at home. Btw, I own your blog.
Glad to hear that you own the blog. Who says the SEC is afraid to play the USC? LSU played Oregon at a neutral site last season. Alabama is playing Michigan at a neutral site this season. Georgia played Boise State a year ago. Maybe it will all take care of itself and USC and an SEC team will meet in the national title game this season.
Are you going to any games in Kyle Field this year?
I sure hope so, maybe that SEC opener against Florida. I'm one of the rare breeds who's been to a Texas A&M basketball game there in College Station but never to a football game.
If you got my first question ignore this one but with Georgias problems( losing Crowell, young O-line, lots of starters being suspended ect ect) are you still picking them to win the East? I think they will have at least 2 cofference losses 1 to SC and 1 other prob Mizzou
Right now, I still like Georgia in the East. We still don't know how many guys will be suspended and for how many games, so I reserve the right to change that prediction.
Where do you rate EJ Gaines in comparison to someone like J. Banks? I think he is a very underrated corner.. good tackler and very active.
I agree. Gaines is one of the top cover corners in the SEC. My colleague, Edward (The ATL Kid) Aschoff thinks Gaines will be one of the premier breakout players in the SEC this season. With Mathieu gone, I would have Gaines among the top five CBs in the league along with Banks, Dee Milliner, Tharold Simon and Trey Wilson. Watch Malcolm Mitchell at Georgia, too.
How does someone like Bennie Logan get completely left off the All-SEC team?
Because picking preseason All-SEC teams is an afterthought for coaches. Very few of them even do the picking. Remember the whole Spurrier/Tebow fiasco a few years ago? Logan is easily one of the top three or four interior defensive linemen in the league.
Do you honestly believe that GA will go unscathed through the conference? What about their depth issues? They do not even have there full allotment of scholarship players? Depth killed them in the Championship game against LSU last year. What has changed?
No, I don't think they will go unbeaten. But I could see them going 7-1 again in the league. They did last year.
Have you found John who thinks Vandy will compete in the East. While I am here, your predictions for the East, top to bottom?
1. Georgia2. South Carolina3. Florida4. Tennessee5. Missouri6. Vanderbilt7. Kentucky
All I hear is "neutral site this, neutral site that", Chris!!!Where are the home and home series?????? Answer me!!! You hear me?!?!?
I'm sorry. I was momentarily blinded by all of the bling the SEC has collected over the years. You're measured by championship trophies in this sport, not by how many games you win in the regular season or who you beat in the regular season. I'll see you in Miami ... unless the Trojans stumble again somewhere along the way.
Should Arkansas win the west would Wilson be a higher draft pick than Barkley going into the draft?
Really don't think the draft order will have much to do with the Hogs winning the West. Wilson has a great chance to be a high first-round pick. I don't see him going higher than Barkley.
What do you think about Tennessee's new nose tacka, Daniel McCullers at 6'7" 380 lbs. They said he is a potential game changer and his nicknames are "Shade Tree" and "Green Mile"?
The Vols hope he can have the same impact in the middle of their defensive line as Terrence Cody did in the middle of the Alabama defensive line.
What's the biggest game in the East this season?
Has to be Georgia at South Carolina on Oct. 6. I also think that Florida at Tennessee the third week of the season will be a big one as far as which of those two teams might make a move in the East this season.
why do you hate arkansas so much? we will have the last laugh while you are crying because arkansas is winning the national title in 2012 fact.
Wow, I haven't heard that before. We have everybody at the SEC blog. The Hogs will be very good this season, just not good enough to win the national title.
CHRIS! i need to know your opinion on how Saban Juggles the likes of HaHa, Sunseri, Collins, and Eddie Williams over the next few years. thats a scary group to have at safety
The best answer is to go back and look at how often they play five and six defensive backs.
C-low, how great is it that Mizzou is in the East?? Pretty sure every other team can mark down a W for any game vs. Mizzou. No need to even show up.....no way the Tigers even belong on the same field.
Sounds like some pretty good motivation for the Tigers as they get ready for Georgia's visit the second week.
Chris, I'm really worried about these 27 secondary violations that we reported to the NCAA. Does this give probable cause to the NCAA to start knocking on the front door? I'd hate for us to be back on probation. ROLL TIDE!
Typically, you report secondary violations with the hope that you won't have major violations. Schools all over the country report secondary violations.
USC has been the only school to compete with the SEC and get the upper hand on the over the past decade or so. Hopefully, the SEC and SC do meet. Admittedly, I have more confidence in Pete Carroll in a big game format than Lane Kiffin. Although the subplot of Kiffin facing an SEC team for the championship is probably the type of story bloggers/writers dream of.
Obviously, I'm just having some fun with O.J.'s cousin. Wonder if he drives a white Ford Bronco? Anyway, I expect USC to be in the national championship game. Kiffin has done a really good job there in a tough situation with the probation and scholarship losses. I think most of the country would love to see USC take on an SEC team in this season's title game.
Gotta run. We'll catch up again next week. Hope everyone has a great rest of the week.
