Good afternoon, ready to chat? Let's go
Do you think that Ichiro Suzuki will sign with the Yankees in 2013?
Not sure if the Yankees will be interested in bringing him back, assuming Gardner will be fully recovered for next season. So far, Ichiro hasn;t shown all that much that Gardner can;t do as well or better
Is it crazy for me to trust Hiroki more then I thrust CC with the ball?
Not off recent form, not at all. HiroK has developed into quite a reliable starter and with CC out injured again, I think you've got a strong point
Is there ANY chance we see Josh Hamilton in pinstripes next year?
doubt it. Unless Hal relaxes the 189M mandate for 2014, I don;t think we see too many more of those huge long term committments
What did you think of Former New York Yankees Outfielder Melky Cabrera Being Suspended for 50 games for PED?
it's too bad, and I admire him for owning up to it the way he did without trying to make excuses or challenge the validity of the test
How many good years do you think Jeter has left after this year?
Jeez, who knows? How many people would have predicted this season after his 2010 season? My guess would be he's got at least one more in him, but at this point you muct admit, the guy is capable of anything
I think Casey Mgeehee has been great, do you see him every becoming a everyday player?
not here. Where would he play? Obviously, he has been an everyday player for other teams and probably will again
Robbie Cano, what da ya know
his neck hurts
What do you think of the signing of Derek Lowe? Do you think between now and August 31st the Yankees wil get anybody else and if so who do you see them getting?
based on Monday night, I like it a lot. Have no idea who might become available between now and then, but a lot of it will have to do with CC and Pettitte's recoveries; if Yankees are pretty sure both are coming back, there's no need to add anyone else
Is Chavez going to keep going at this .900 OPS clip?
what do you think? I mean, really?
Any chance Giraldi takes into account the last two games and considers Kuroda for a Game 1 start and Garcia for a playoff start if they matchup with the Rangers in the playoffs? Also, how likely do you see Phelps being a viable starting candidate in 2013? I rate it as high.
I doubt Girardi would "insult" CC, if you consider it an insult, and start anyone over him in Game 1. However, if CC's health is suspect in any way, then he would be crazy not to do that. As for Freddy, i doubt Girardi would risk starting him in a five-game series but as with everything else, it all depends on how many healthy/effective starting pitchers they have come playoff time. as for Phelps, I think he has a very good shot of cracking the No. 5 slot for 2013
I have a roster full of players that I am willing to trade to the Evil Empire. Do you think Cashman will bite on Beckett, Crawford, Lackey, and the like?
No, but there's a club in Flushing you might do some business with
I thought that Derek Lowe was in the early days of his ten day period designated for assignment by the Indians, when he signed with the Yankees. Usually clubs wait the full ten days allowed in case of injuries, etc to gauge other clubs interest in a player. There was no mention of any consideration paid by the Yankees. Did the Indians release Lowe early as a favor to Derek and Cash, or possibly his agent to stay in the agent's good graces? Baseball Reference.com reports that Scott Boras/Mike Nicotera are Lowe's agents. Did time just get away from me on when Lowe was designated by the Indians?
off the top of my head, I belive there were eight days. I think he was DFA'd on the second and released on the 10th. so that's almost the full time. I know nothing about any "favors" done for the Yankees, although Lowe may have asked for his release. This is my first day at the park since Lowe joined the team so I haven;t had the chance to speak with him yet
If Phelps continues to pitch like this. Do you think he can get starts after CC comes back? Thanks!
Again, depends on who's healthy/effective. if pettitte has a setback, the yankees will have to make a decision on the rotation and Phelps might be the answer. Same thing if Nova or Hughes continue to struggle. then again, something great might pop up on the waiver wire
Will we see Cano in the lineup tonight?
No, Out for the second straight day with stiff neck. Don;t know if he's available for pinch-hitting; lineup was posted after clubhouse was closed
Couple of things - One who would be manning the right field in 2013? Assuming all pitchers are healthy or return in good health (Pineada, Pettite and CC), what are your thoughts on the rotation for 2013?
RF is a mystery for next year because we don;t know what's going to happen with Swisher. My gut says they won't sign him to a long-term deal for $10M+ a year, which is what he is likely to want. as for the rotation, beyond CC and Pineda, assuming he's healthy, that's really tough to predict. We don;t know if Pettitte will want to pitch agian next year, especially after getting hurt this year and having to go through a long rehab, which he hates. I'm assuming both Nova and Hughes will still be in play, although nothing is assured off this year's performances. I'm starting to dounbt Banuelos and Betances. Phelps looks like a strong candidate for next year. And I would think the Yankees would seek to re-sign Kuroda, who has always worked on one-year contracts. So there are a lot of different possibilities
Have you ever had the chance to read Ken Procters Book Baseball Memoirs of a lifetime, and if so what do you think of his written expierences with the yankees players?
I have not, but if you recommend it, I will track it down
With Robinson Cano out do you think the Yankees will try to pick up anohter bat for the infield like Lyle Overbay or Ty Wigginton?
I'm assuming that Cano's absence is very temporary, although we won;t know much until after the game
Hey Wally, I just wanted to say I love oyur reporting, keep up the good work. Now do you think that Russel Martin will be a yank next year, or do you think cash is looking to sign Miguel Montero, or Mike Napoli. Thanks
Thanks for the kind words, Evan. I think Russell Martin, who I like very much, made a mistake in not finalizing the three-year deal the Yankees and his agent were discussing in the spring. That being said, Girardi still says he loves Martins's defense and we know he values defense in a catcher way ahead of offense. So there is the possibility that Martin will be back next year, although at a lot less money than the Yankees were offering in March
So I think it is time for Ichiro to finally get to the World Series. He deserves it and I am glad he is with the Best Major League team of all time. I live in the Seattle area and have always been a Yankee's fan. Who else do you think will make it onto the team in 2013?
It sounds like you;re assuming two things: One that the yankees are going to the World Series this year, and that ichiro will be back next season. I think those are both very much in question, especially number two
Wally, would it be safe to say that you were wrong when you said the Yankees blew it by not signing Yu instead of Kuroda? At least for this year anyway?
When exactly did I say or write that? Please produce your evidence, because I can guarantee you are wrong. In fact, my column the day they got Ichiro praised the move. But nice try, anyway
can you remember a Yankees team with a better, more likeable, group of supporting players? They almost make me forget the fact that we have Arod for the next 5 1/2 years.
I agree that the bench has been one of the team's biggest assets this season and has made it possible for them to have the best record in baseball despite losing so many important players (Red sox, take note) Signing guys like Ibanez and Jones and Chavez may not make the splash of signing the A-Rod's and the CC's, but they often have just as big an impact and of you're going to kill Cashman for the big moves that fail, you must praise him for the small ones that work out
I see Ichiro's in CF today. Talk to Girardi about this?
No. Girardi did not post the lineup until after his news conference so we had no idea Grandy was not playing. But Im assuming that's only because of the quick turnaround and a LHP going today. If there's anything more to it than that, we'll let you know in the blog
don't you think Girardi should relax the splits a little and pencil in Chavez against some lefties? Or does today have more to do with night game/day game?
Part of Girardi's thing with Chavez is he can;t play everyday because of his back, and I think what we saw last week -- he played four days in a row in Detroit and was unavailable for the next three in Toronto -- justifies the manager's caution
Any idea how serious this Cano thing is?
Don;t know yet. Girardi said it wasn;t serious, but he is out for two days in a row. we'll know more after the game
Who should be the fourth starter in the postseason rotation? Hughes, Nova, Garcia, Phelps?
It will be whoever pitches better down the stretch between Hughes and Nova
any chance the yankees bring up some youth in september?
I';m sure they will, but how much any of them play will depend on how much of a cushion the Yankees have in September, Girardi's not jeopardizing home-field advantage to give some kids a little playing time
don't understand why people are congratulating Melky for acknowledging that he got caught cheating. What about the past 2 years, when he went from being below replacement level to a star? What about all of those wins that he stole from other teams? What about the job he stole from someone else who wasn't cheating?
I think it's just because we've seen so many players deny, obfuscate, deflect blame and generally shirk their responsibilites that it seems refershing to hear some candor. Your other points are valid, however, and are among my biggest objections to PEDs
Thanks, all. Game time. We'll do it again next week, no?
