We'll get rolling in a sec.
I keep hearing mixed reviews about Kenny Stills in the slot. Is Kenny in the slot because his skills best fit that position, or simply to get him on the field next to Trey Metoyer and Justin Brown?
Kenny is in the slot so the Sooners can get their three best WRs (Stills, Brown, Metoyer) on the field at the same time. I think you'll still see Kenny line up at wideout, but right now he's trying to nail down the slot so OU can go to that lineup when they want this season.
Trotteroni, I have a love/hate relationship with Happy Feet. Love that arm, hate it when he does that thing he does. With all the losses on D and with the receivers, it's looking like Landry will be playing from behind a fair amount. How much non-garbage time and non-Belldozer playing time will Bell and Allen get this season? Is there any chance B or A get a start if Landry starts doing that thing that he does?
First, I don't see OU playing from behind much. West Virginia. Maybe TCU or somewhere else on the road like Tech? That said, Landry dedicated his offseason to improving his footwork and playmaking outside the pocket. So far, coaches have raved about his development there. We'll see if it translates to the game field. But no chance either starts over Landry.
JT, Biggest game in the Big 12 is always the RRSO. What's the #2 game? WVU or Bedlam?
West Virginia. Bedlam is big for a lot of reasons, but WV could be for the Big 12 crown.
Jake, Will you marry me and get me out of Lubbock?
I'm already married -- and it isn't that bad in Lubbock, is it?
With our recent losses on D line, does the much publicized move of Grissom to TE get reversed?
No, that move is permanent. OU needs tight ends more than it needs d-ends.
How is RB David Smith doing? heard anything?
He's had some moments in the team work and scrimmages. But he's firmly behind Whaley, Clay, D. Williams, Ross and Finch. He either redshirts or gets some mop-up duty similar to Jonathon Miller a couple of years ago.
What are the chances of me playing this season? If so, can I crack the starting line-up? How many catches/TDs?
I've always said the odds were against you being eligible immediately. Getting an NCAA waiver is extremely difficult. If for some reason you were cleared, you'd be in the Top 4 WRs. Either way, Sooners have a nice player here moving forward.
Is the diamond formation dead? If so that's a shame it was so much fun to watch
As far as I can see, it's dead. Replaced by the Belldozer as a gimmick formation. That was Kevin Wilson's baby. When he left, the diamond left with him.
Jake, is this 2012 group the most-talented receiving corps that Bob Stoops has ever coached at Oklahoma?
Too soon to anoint this group. 2008, 2004-03, even 2000 -- I'd take those wideouts over 2012 at this point. But this group has a chance to be one of Bob Stoops' best. We'll see.
Hey Jake, so what's the over/under on interceptions for Landry this year? Please say less than 10!
I'm taking the over, but not by much. Say 11-13.
What are you hearing about whether or not Jalen Saunders will be eligible?
No official word from the NCAA yet.
How many additional touches will Roy Finch get a game by lining up regularly in the slot? His big play potential should really help the Sooners given their questions at WR, don't you think?
I do -- provided they get him the ball. I could see him disappear in that role, maybe getting a screen and a reverse a game, and that's it. But he's too explosive to forget. Hopefully the Sooners utilize him on the perimeter.
Is there any news on WR Saunders? Why is it taking so long for the NCAA to give an answer?
I actually asked Stoops last week if he knew how the NCAA prioritized examining waiver requests. Is it first come, first serve? Stoops didn't know. But that would be something for me to find out. If this drags any longer, I'll check with the NCAA to see how they approach waivers.
I might be the most vocal, some say down right mouthy, Sooner fan on the planet. I'm sick of hearing the Longhorns babble about Bevo busting our butts this season. Any chance the Bevo stampede can erase the 38 pt swing we hit them with last season?
Texas will be better. Their defense should prevent them from getting blown out, provided their QB doesn't play them out of games...
Are there going to be any surprises on the quarterbacks' depth chart?
Wouldn't stun me if OU kept the No. 2 quiet and list Drew Allen and Blake Bell as "or." But accounts suggest Bell has made a move for the No. 2 job this preseason.
Where do you stand on OU playing the big non conference games like Notre Dame, Florida State, Tenn, Ohio St, etc? Are you in favor of it or would they be better to be like OSU & play nobody? Won't those marquee games help over a cupcake nc schedule when the playoff comes around in 2014?
That mindset has always served OU well -- think about 2008. Without that non-conference schedule, Texas would have gone to the Big 12 and national title games. With a four-team playoff, there's always going to be a couple of one-loss teams. Playing an Ohio State would go a long ways in helping OU stick out as a team worthy of the playoff.
How does the sooner OL stack up nationally now that two starters have gone down for the year?
I still think it has a chance to be good. Maybe not top 5 in the country good. But Adam Shead is ready to play now, and Bronson Irwin has the ability to play at the level Tyler Evans has. The knock on the group is depth. Another injury or two, and it's danger time.
Jake,Have you noticed a change in recruiting style in regard to recruiting bigger defensive players to counter what the SEC brings to the table? Will bigger players be able to cover the spread offenses we see in the Big12?
I see OU coveting speed above all. OU is worried about winning the Big 12, more so than coming up with the recipe to take down the SEC.
Aside from replacing LB for a "tweener", I really don't see much of a difference between a 4-3 and a 4-2-5 defense. Am I mistaken?
OU hasn't run a 4-3 since 2007. Keenan Clayton, Tony Jefferson and now Gabe Lynn are all nickelbacks.
Jake, we lost Habern and Evans with a combined 59 career starts. How in the world are we still ranked 4th in the nation?
Still a lot to like about this team. Depth and skill at RB/WR. Most experienced QB in college football. Veteran defense. After USC, Alabama, LSU, everyone has major question marks.
PSU grad/fan here....how is Justin Brown doing in the offense? Will he start? We wish him well.
Yes, Brown is going to start. Probably return punts, too. He's been very impressive in just a couple of weeks.
Buying or selling Jake that Millard gets the most game day touches of Whaley and Williams?
Selling. Whaley will lead this team in touches, if he's healthy. Millard only averaged 3-4 touches a game last season. Don't see that suddenly reaching double-digits on a consistent basis.
The Mont or Vans?
When its all said and done, and the equipment is wiped down and put away for the 2012 season. Who has more yards and TDs, Geno Smith or Landry Jones?
Landry has more yards; Geno has more TDs.
With K-State at 6:30, what's the over/under on night games. My guess is 10. I'm sure Bob Stoops is thrilled.
I believe there were 8 last season. I think Notre Dame is going to be a day game. Same with Texas obviously. So 10 is high, but it could easily be 8 again, considering UTEP, FAMU, K-State are already slated for the evening.
Jake, Will the RRSO or the OU/WV game decide the B12 this year?
OU-WV. Not a believer in the burnt orange just yet.
What does it say that Grissom is starting at TE? He's that good or we're that hosed at that position?
Combination of both. Little bit of an indictment on the others that Grissom was able to win the job so quickly. But he has a ton of athleticism, natural ability. He's earned the job.
How ready is Phillips to pick up the slack now that McGee is suspended indefinitely?
Sounds like he's getting there. But OU moved David King to the three technique, where Phillips has been working. He'll play, but he won't start.
Jake-o, I want a cage fight with OState's C&W mascot Garth Brooks. I know he was a walk-on QB for the Cowboy's, but I think I can take'm. Can you get this setup for the Bedlam halftime show?
Only if Jim Ross calls the action.
Do you see Mike Stoops playing Javon Harris at the Nickel Back and Gabe or Julian at strong saftey when we play teams that are more of a running team? with Javon being bigger and more physical.
Nope. Harris is at strong safety, Lynn is at nickelback, and Wilson is at dimeback. Barring a meltdown, that's the lineup OU will open with.
How much will the offensive line losses effect the Sooners this season?
Shouldn't be a huge deal, unless someone else gets injured at either guard or, gulp, center. Then it's a huge deal.
Does OU really have a shot at going to the NC this year with everything that has happened to them already? Are they really a No. 4 team?
They have a shot, but it's not going to be easy. The schedule is unforgiving. I'm not picking them to get there, namely for that reason.
Do you think Stoops will scrap the no-huddle to reduce the number of possessions his D is on the field?
I think it's something they have been contemplating. Could be a game-to-game thing.
What would you rank the OU defense as it stands right now with the big 12. Texas is of course stout but any others compare?
Probably 2nd. But OSU, K-State defenses have a chance to be good, too.
It sounds like Wort is trying to put the injury questions to rest. Do you buy it and think that he is 100%?
Really perplexing back-and-forth. I have to take Wort at his word. He was very adamant with me one-on-one that he was fine, and that he didn't know what Kish was talking about.
And what about Justin Brown? Can he be as good a Blackmon and Bryant were for OSU?
People are dismissing me because I'm only a freshmam, but I will surprise everyone and out play Landry Jones
Shouldn't you be studying the playbook, instead of visiting the OU football chat?
pros use TEs a lot and they are changing the game will OU do more passes to TE than in past?
Wouldn't bank on it.
Anything on KEndall Thompson? THought Stoops thought he was special? ORiginal plans were to use him on the read option, yes?
They already have a gimmick QB. No room for 2.
Jake, were you surprised at all that the AP voters didn't seem too concerned about our somewhat tumultuous offseason (injuries and the like), given that we still checked in at number 4?
Honestly, voters know as much about OU as I do Michigan, Rutgers or Oregon State. It's a flawed process. Lot of voters going off preseason hype.
Lot of talk bout the offense. but sooner or later we will have to play defense.. not sure if we have the althetes to compete in a slugfest on d you agree?
No, the athletes are there. Love the star power of the secondary, and Wort has been great when he's been healthy. The d-line might not be overwhelming, but it can be solid, if not better than that. The Achilles heel of the defense the last two years has been mental breakdowns. Bob is banking that brother Mike will be able to correct those.
Is McGee still on campus? thoughts on him getting back?
Yes. He remains a member of the team. If he stays out of trouble going forward, he'll be back on the field before too long.
Did you say "depth at WR"? You meant "fresh recruits", didn't you?
Justin Brown is a three-year starter. In essence, they have 2 returning starters in Brown and Stills, plus maybe the best freshman WR in the country.
What's the latest on the battle for starting LT?
Status quo. Slight edge to Tyrus Thompson. That could change, though.
I've been reading a lot of great things about Metoyer (Switzer throwing around the "s" word?), but I'm more of a visual person. What traits can I expect to see from #17? Anybody he reminds people of?
He reminds me of Blackmon, in that he can go up and get the ball, and out-muscle smaller CBs. Will he be that good? I think he can be. But time will tell.
Will Mike Stoops go back to a more traditional 4-3-4?
No. If anything, we may see more 3-2-6.
How can you say "Shouldn't be a huge deal, unless someone else gets injured at either guard or, gulp, center. Then it's a huge deal." when you lose 50+ starts due to injuries. So your center was all conference and losing him means nothing. As soon ou faces a good d-line, Landry will start throwing int's.
Adam Shead was OU's best offensive lineman the second half of last season. He wasn't starting this year, because the other guys had more experience. But he doesn't present a dropoff. Tyler Evans was a good player, but he wasn't a superstar. That's why I think OU could be all right.
How do the coaches rate Finch's hands?
FInch has good hands. One of the reasons they moved him out there.
Is the fact that no one is talking about a kicker mean that Oklahoma has a good one now?
Hunnicutt nailed a 55-yarder during the scrimmage a week ago. I think he could have a really good season.
Does moving David King to DT make any sense to you? Even with the suspension of Stacey McGee, OU has two seniors (Casey Walker, JaMarkus McFarland) at the position. They also have Jordan Phillips, one of OU's best best pound-for-pound athletes. Don't they just seem to be thinner at DE?
McFarland could slide to the three technique, but they would lose some quickness that McGee provided them with. McFarland, like Walker, is more of a nose guard. King, while giving up a few pounds, is quicker than McGee, and with Phillips also helping out, they feel like they're better off with that rotation. The emergence of some of the younger ends like Rashod Favors, Charles Tapper made them feel more comfortable with swinging King inside.
I know OU is keeping its word and letting Woods take his shot at WR, but has he taken any defensive snaps and ultimately is that where you see him landing?
No, he's still on offense. He's been banged up, and with the influx of other WRs, he seems like a likely redshirt. We'll see what position he ends up at, but they're going to give him a fair shake at WR.
It's that time again:Anything new regarding Justin Manning's imminent commitment?
We were so close to making it through the chat...
Jake, I am PO'ed here. 3 FREAKING loses last season. We lost to BAYLOR and Tech, then got our skulls crushed by the FREAKING POKES. I lost a lot of money last season and have zero confidence in the Sooners. Which games to I absolutely not bet on this season?
Sounds like you should give up gambling altogether.
Is King really going to start at DT, in front of Phillips and Walker?
Looks like it.
I'll stack Byndom, Diggs, and Vaccaro against the best 3 first year players that Laundry will be throwing at. You willing to be money that my steers tag more Picks than Landry throws TD's in the RRSO?
I'll be spending my money at the corndog stand that weekend.
big time fan. but , seems like we just arent quite there athletically to match up with the likes of alabama, lsu, usc.. am i wrong? do we have that kind of talent?
No one has been able to match up with the athleticism of LSU, Alabama the last 6 years. SEC has a stranglehold on CFB. Not sure anyone is going to break the streak this year, either.
If you don't think OU will make the BCS, then who the one team that you think will beat them this year?
West Virginia on the road. That's gonna be a tough one.
What's your opinion of the diamond formation? From what I understand, it's a fairly useless formation once you take away the "What the hell is this thing?" quality of it...
OSU has been running it to great effect the past couple of years.
why is everyone ready to scrap the no-huddle for concern of to many D plays for OU, but you don't hear that for the other UO ducks?
Probably because the tradition of this school is founded on defense. Fans who grew up with Rod Shoate, Brian Bosworth and Roy Williams don't like seeing the Sooners give up 40 points on multiple occasions.
Guys, that's all the time we've got for the chat today. I've got to get over to practice. Thanks for all the questions -- sorry I couldn't get to all of them. We'll do it again next week, same time, same place. That will be a game-week chat. Football season is almost here. Until then, everyone have a great week.
