Chat with Kevin Seifert

Kevin Seifert
  (2:00 PM)

Hi everyone. Let's get to this...

bob (new jersey)

hey kevin with desmond bishop getting hurt last week and with him being out for the season who do u think steps up and takes his spot in the lineup.....also i didnt hear anything about davon house...how hurt is he....i just hope this isnt 2010 all over again with all these injuries...ill take an super bowl win again but i hate to see my boys all banged up...thx

Kevin Seifert
  (2:01 PM)

The Packers have a lot of confidence in D.J. Smith, and it appears he'll probably get more snaps this year than A.J. Hawk. That's how much they like him. As far as Davon House, sounds like it was a 2-3 week injury. He hasn't been ruled out for Week 1 yet.

Nolan (La Crosse, WI)

Is Audie Cole the Vic So'oto of the NFCN this year? All hype

Kevin Seifert
  (2:02 PM)

Ha. I don't think Cole has gotten as much hype this year as So'oto did last year. In the end, he had two big plays in the fourth quarter. His roster spot is not yet secure.

Scooter, minny [via mobile]

Who replaces jerome simpson the first 3 games devin aromashodu doesnt look like he will make the team?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:03 PM)

Oh, I think he has a decent shot to make the team. The other candidate would be Michael Jenkins.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:03 PM)

Oh, I think he has a decent shot to make the team. The other candidate would be Michael Jenkins.

Nolan (La Crosse, WI)

What are you specifically looking at when Cedric Benson plays on Thursday?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:03 PM)

Mostly to see if he knows the plays. He is an experienced runner and knows what to do once he gets the ball. That's not a concern.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:03 PM)

Mostly to see if he knows the plays. He is an experienced runner and knows what to do once he gets the ball. That's not a concern.

Craig (Braintree MA)

So how do you feel about the Vikings rush defense after week 2? You seemed down on it after the 9ers game.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:04 PM)

Still lots of questions about Jasper Brinkley.

Julian (CA)

What is the best stat that you would say predicts the Bears in the Super Bowl? B Marshall 100 rec, S McClellin 10 sacks, M Wright 16 starts, or J Webb 16 starts.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:05 PM)

Interesting. I would say J Webb 16 starts. Means they got him through the season.

DP (MN)

Obviously, drawing large conclusions from preseason games is fruitless, but any sense that MN coaching is doing a better job with post halftime adjustments?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:06 PM)

Definitely too large of a conclusion to draw on preseason games. Legitimate gripe based on last season, but there aren't any halftime adjustments in preseason games.

Tim (Middle USA)

Kevin,I hope the KVB injury is a peaceful transition to Willie Young as the starter on the right. I didn't feel he was that impactful last season, but because of his leadership, how do you bench him? What are your thoughts?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:08 PM)

I thought he made an impact in games, both via leadership and pass rush. If the play Avril say, 70 percent of the snaps and Vanden Bosh, say, 50 percent, then Willie Young can get plenty of playing time. And those numbers are pretty normal and reasonable for deep NFL defensive lines.

Tim (Middle USA)

As a follow-up, wouldn't offensive lines hate KVB off the bench in the fourth quarter??

Kevin Seifert
  (2:09 PM)

Or any fresh-legged defensive linemen.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:09 PM)

Or any fresh-legged defensive linemen.

Brett (Braintree MA)

Glad I could give you some material to my new job here in Mississippi. Was it your choice to cover me?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:10 PM)

No, but I thought it was a good piece. You still have that vertical jump!

Jake (Wisconsin)

Any news or update on Nick Collins? Is he definitely retired?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:10 PM)

He has not announced it, no. It appears he is continuing to work out and keep in shape and hope he is one day cleared to play.

blake (Lake O MI)

With the Lions passing game as good as it's been, does it really matter who the running backs are? Seems like the packs approach as well. Obviously having Best would be ideal but i'm not overly worried.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:11 PM)

It's always nice to be able to fall back on a running game at some point. In the playoffs, for example, it might have helped to slow down the Saints game with the running game, if it had been an option for the Lions.

Chris M (Elmhurst)

With everyone focused on the Bears offense, what should the level of concern be for the otherside of the ball? (Injuries to multiple safeties, Urlacher health, Uproven ability of everyone on the D-Line besides Peppers)

Kevin Seifert
  (2:13 PM)

Fair point. The Urlacher issue has reminded everyone that the Bears' best four defensive players -- him, Lance Briggs, Julius Peppers and Charles Tillman -- are all on the wrong side of 30. Their defense could be a lot different with Urlacher dragging one leg around. A lot depends on whether he can get himself through the season at a high level.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Are the Vikings really going to foolish enough to risk Peterson's career, and the franchise's future, by allowing him to start Week 1? Or is this just media talk and a smoke screen by Minnesota?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:14 PM)

Why would it risk his career? Everyone heals differently. If the medical people say the leg is sound, and the football people see him practicing with abandon, why wouldn't you play him?

AD (DC)

Can another guy on the Vikes get to 10 sacks besides Jared Allen? Robison had 8, but the majority of them came at the beginning of the season...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:14 PM)

Going to be tough. Kevin Williams might be your best option there.

Jake (Chicago)

Getting really excited about the Lions chances. When new/missing pieces come together (Broyles, Leshoure, Best hopefully) that offense is going to be scary. D looked good enough Fri night. You still thinking 3rd in NFC North...really ??

Kevin Seifert
  (2:15 PM)

Our predictions come out soon.

AD (DC)

Does Audie Cole have a chance at starting at MLB this seson? Brinkley has shown nothing thus far, and the experiment with Griffen was a fail...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:16 PM)

I don't think he would be first up. Thinking if it can't be Brinkley, it could be Erin Henderson with Marvin Mitchell on the outside.

Nick (On the Ledge)

Talk me down, Kevin. The Packers are not looking like a 15-1 team so far this preseason...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:16 PM)

Never judge a team's chances based on preseason record.

WyattBurp (Detroit, MI)

Cedric Benson. Did nothing for his last team. Should fans expect nothing from him with Green Bay?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:16 PM)

1,000 yards is nothing?

Bert (St. Paul, MN)

Will Leshoure get extensive work in week 4 to get him ready for his post suspension action?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:17 PM)

And maybe in Week 3, too. At some point, he needs some live action after more than a year of injuries.

Jon (Chicago)

As the preseason progresses and the replacement refs continue to mess up, do you see the NFL acknowledging it is losing leverage and caving to the officials union at all?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:18 PM)

That will be an excellent question. The league is really going to have a hard time claiming that safety is its top priority when it hasn't put the very best people it has available on the field to maintain that safety. (That's one of an official's prescribed duties.)

Chris (Cincy)

Why are the Vikings bringing AP back this early? Why not PUP list him and have him come back Week 7? It's not like the Vikings are making the playoffs this year.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:19 PM)

Because you never, ever give up on the start of an NFL season. Ever. All healthy hands on deck, every week. It's the only way to maintain the integrity of the game.

Tim (Milwaukee)

Urlacher's 2012 knee issues vs. Peppers' 2011 knee issues. You expect any similarities/ differences?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:19 PM)

If Urlacher gets through the season as well as Peppers did, then the Bears will be in good shape.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:19 PM)

If Urlacher gets through the season as well as Peppers did, then the Bears will be in good shape.

Blake (Lake O)

Kev, do you think with that we will ever see a cover corner around Calvins size?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:20 PM)

Nope. The guys that size who can run are always being steered to receiver/tight end.

Derrick (Albany)

Do you see Christian Ponder making a step forward with the Vikings or will they be looking for a QB in the draft?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:21 PM)

I think he's going to show enough progress that quarterback won't be atop their wish list next April.

Drew (Green Bay, WI)

Is there a chance Starks goes on the PUP and the Packers keep Benson, Green, and Saine?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:23 PM)

He's not eligible for PUP. At this point, if they put him on IR, he would miss the entire season. I don't think they want to shut him down for the year if they can avoid it.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:23 PM)

He's not eligible for PUP. At this point, if they put him on IR, he would miss the entire season. I don't think they want to shut him down for the year if they can avoid it.

Josh (LA)

Any update on Bishop? Last I heard it wasn't a sure bet that he'd miss the season

Kevin Seifert
  (2:23 PM)

The Packers haven't formally said so, but that seems the likeliest scenario.

Brian K. (St. Louis, MO)

Kevin, any thoughts that BJ Coleman could win the backup QB role over Harrell? I'm seeing alot of negative pub on Harrell.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:23 PM)

Yeah, but Coleman isn't ready for that job.

Trevor (De Pere, WI)

Kev, that Nickel front 4 of Peppers, Melton, Izzy, and Shea looked pretty potent, no?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:24 PM)

Yep. Always thought Idonije was best used as a swing DE/DT.

Dean (St. Cloud) [via mobile]

Blair Walsh strongest leg in the division? That touchback that went through the uprights was impressive granted it was indoors.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:25 PM)

And also the youngest. Don't discount that part of the process.

Zach (Crystal lake IL)

Is the bears line as secure as they believe or does Jay Cutler have a reason to be concerned even with Tice in control.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:25 PM)

It's making progress. The key will be the protections Tice combines with the pass plays.

Drew (Green Bay, WI)

If Collins ever did get cleared to play, would he likely try to come back to Green Bay? Is there any chance that the Packers turn to him in the middle of the season?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:26 PM)

All completely speculative. My guess is that if the Packers thought he had a chance to come back, they wouldn't have released him. They would have just carried him through the summer, and possibly part of the season, on the PUP.

Nate (mn)

Hey Kev do you every go on team web pages and read news or articles like ASK VIC?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:26 PM)

Sometimes, yes. Team web sites get access that the rest of the media doesn't, so sometimes there can be valuable information there.

Zach (Crystal lake IL)

Why is everyone stuck on Benson's lack of "explosive speed" i thought he just runs people over? What are teams going to do if Green Bay actually establishes a run with Benson? how do they drop coverage on any green bay WR or TE?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:29 PM)

Only because the Packers have said they want a more explosive running game this season. Benson doesn't really fit the profile there.

Jimmy (Chicago)

How much do you think Stafford's injuries in his first two years have influenced various writer's perceptions of him? I mean, we shouldn't care about rankings, but 77th overall and behind Percy Harvin? Seriously?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:30 PM)

I think a lot. We all see him every week and have a pretty good idea of how good he is. A few steps removed, however, the perception of Stafford is that he's a former No. 1 overall pick who had a bad rookie year, missed his second year and then had a great third year. They're looking to see if the trend continues in year four, I guess.

Anti-GreenBay (Wausau, Wi)

Most experts state you should see marked improvement in a players 2nd year in the league. Given that, what we you say are acceptable stats for Ponder's 2nd year under center?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:30 PM)

Over 60 percent completions and more touchdown throws than interceptions.

Patrick (Wausau, WI)

Do you think that Kevin Smith will be ready to be the starting running back, or is it another guy on the team? Or do think that they will go out and get a free agent?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:32 PM)

I don't think they'll go out and get someone to play ahead of him. I also don't think he's a gamebreaker. But he'll do what the Lions need.

Anti-GreenBay (Wausau, Wi)

If you are going to continue to post your answers twice, it would be nice to post my question at least once!!

Kevin Seifert
  (2:35 PM)

Yeah, there have been some tech issues going on through this chat. I am fighting through at less than 100 percent. I'm a gamer. I don't leave anything on the field.

Tyler (Minneapolis)

What are your thoughts on J Webb? Last season was laughable to call him a PRO lineman... Has he been disciplined enough to be a starter, or will his antics keep up this season?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:36 PM)

Based on how hard they're riding him publicly, I would say he hasn't made enough progress. But he has all the tools.

Fritz (Baltimore)

Is there a chance that C.Williams plays RG for the Bears?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:36 PM)

Seems unlikely. I think they're happy with Lance Louis, and really, Gabe Carimi and Roberto Garza as well.

Nick (Marshfield, WI)

Are there any contract negotiations going on between the Packers and Rodgers/Matthews? Would it be good to get any of that taken care of now so it doesn't become a distraction as the season progresses?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:37 PM)

Maybe it would be better, but both of those guys have multiple years left on their deals and if there are any talks going on, they haven't bubbled to the surface.

Matt (Oconto Falls, WI)

Re: Peterson on the PUP--I don't think a player can practice with the team if he is on the PUP list, can he? Plus, from a practical standpoint, why would Zygi and co. not want him out there? He's the main (only?) reason they well sell tickets this season.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:38 PM)

Correct. Once a player practices he's ineligible for PUP. But regardless of tickets, it's an integrity issue. If you're stashing healthy players in September, when everyone has a chance, you're overthinking the situation.

Franklin (Santa Cruz)

Who gets more targets this season, Titus Young or Nate Burleson?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:39 PM)

Interesting. Based on how good Young as looked this summer, I wouldn't be surprised if it's him.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Kevin, in response to Brian K.'s question, is it possible that the Opening Day #2 QB for the Packers is not currently on their roster?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:39 PM)

I really don't think the Packers want to do that. Harrell would really have to fall on his face this week, as opposed to just be shaky, for that to happen.

Craig (Braintree MA)

Which NFCN team gets the most questions on a weekly average? Chicago as they have the biggest fan base?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:40 PM)

Usually whoever is maddest at me at the given time.

Dan (Green Bay)

Hey Kevin - if you don't leave anything on the field does that mean you keep it all in the office?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:41 PM)

Or in my laptop.

Nate (minny)

best food at the minnesota state fair?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:41 PM)

Whatever you eat on the way out. Not a big fan.

Julian (CA)

You know the NFC North more than anyone, what one thing/person have you been most suprised about this offseason?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:42 PM)

Not sure about that, but to answer your question, the most surprised I've been is when the Packers signed Cedric Benson. For a bunch of reasons, I never even considered the possibility they would do that.

Kurtis (Texas)

Kevin - Your thoughts on Kyle Rudolph?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:43 PM)

Really think he has a chance to be special. Long arms, big hands, huge catch radius and a big comfort to a young quarterback.

Ben (Minneapolis)

Between Rodgers, Cutler, and Stafford who has the strongest and Most accurate arm in the NFC north. Whoops sorry i didnt include Ponder...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:44 PM)

Ha. Here's how I would answer that. Strongest = Stafford. Most accurate: Rodgers. Most powerful = Cutler. I think Stafford could throw the ball further, but Cutler can drive the ball downfield on a 20-30-yard rope better than maybe any NFL quarterback.

phil (pa)

i think the real question most people have is a healthy boyles vs.burleson who would get the most targets then. what do you think.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:44 PM)

This year, Burleson. It's going to come slowly for Broyles, I would imagine.

Jason (Texas)

Hey Kevin, what ever happened to the QBR. Did ESPN do away with that?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:45 PM)

Nope. It'll be back in the regular season. I have some ideas for using it that I think will make it easier to digest.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:45 PM)

Nope. It'll be back in the regular season. I have some ideas for using it that I think will make it easier to digest.

justin (ky)

will delmas be ready for the season opener

Kevin Seifert
  (2:45 PM)

Looking pretty iffy at the moment.

Will (Texas)

As a Lions fan I must hesitantly admit that the Bears first team offense looked sharp the last game. Do you feel this will be the greatest division race in the history of the North?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:46 PM)

In the long and winding 10-year road, quite possibly. The NFC North can legitimately boast having three of the NFL's top 10 quarterbacks and teams.

Nolan (La Crosse, WI)

D.J. Smith is pretty small for MLB but he obviously has an impact when he is on the field. What other MLB's have had success at his size?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:47 PM)

It's a position where shorter guys have had success, be it Sam Mills or even the Lions' Stephen Tulloch.

Tyler (Minneapolis)

Besides Marshall, who do you think makes the biggest impact at WR for the Bears this season, why?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:48 PM)

Alshon Jeffery has gotten a lot of publicity, and rightfully so, but it's hard to count out Earl Bennett because of his connection to Cutler.

Justin (Chicago)

I hear a lot of differing opinions on whether the bears wil be a running or passing team, if you had to put a ratio on it, what would you say?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:49 PM)

Tice calls it the "Duh offense." Their ratio will depend on whether defenses commit an extra player to run defense or to pass defense. They would like to be able to throw against run defenses and pass against run defenses. So I think it will be close to 50-50.

Ben (Minneapolis)

Will Vikings split time 50/50 with AP and Gerhart this season??

Kevin Seifert
  (2:49 PM)

Maybe early in the season, but as Peterson progresses he'll be the main guy as usual.

Nolan (La Crosse, WI)

Is Jarrett Bush really going to start at CB? I don't think he has the ball skills...

Kevin Seifert
  (2:51 PM)

I just think he is a placeholder. He's been around long enough and if he starts, it's because they don't have anyone else. It'll be House or Hayward, I would think.

Brian (Pensacola, FL)

I've read alot of camp reports about throwing Cobb in the backfield during shotgun. Is this more of a need to fill a role at running back or an excuse to get him on the field in a Darren Sproles type role while still putting 3-4 receivers on the field. How dangerous would that be, Cobb in the backfield, J-mike split wide with Jennings, Nelson, and Driver/Jones.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:51 PM)

I think it's a way to get him on the field amid a crowded group of WRs. It's smart. He can do it.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:51 PM)

OK a few more things here.

Anti-GreenBay (Wausau, Wi)

I cannot believe Jerome Simpson is being coached to leap over players. It's cool to watch and fans get excited, but the risk of major injury has to be high. Your thoughts?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:51 PM)

It's instinct. Hard to get him to stop.

Ben (Minneapolis)

Fastest player in the NFC north is???

Kevin Seifert
  (2:52 PM)

Based on the combine, at least, it would be Vikings CB Josh Robinson. Ran a 4.33 at the combine.

Nolan (La Crosse, WI)

I just googled Kevin Seifert... the second most popular Kevin Seifert to you is a wedding photographer... is that what you do with your time off?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:53 PM)

He also works at the Durham (NC) paper I believe. Small world.

Nolan (La Crosse, WI)

I've heard the packers are transitioning to a singleback set more often. What does this do to the blocking schemes and what does this allow them to do more of?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:53 PM)

Mostly, I think it allows them to get their best players on the field more often, their WRs and TEs, and not have to have a fullback on the field to tip defenses that a run is coming.

droog (minnesota)

Are Ponder's coaches trying to make him stop his headfirst slides?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:54 PM)

Sounds like he's actually being coached to do it. Leaves body less exposed.

Nolan (La Crosse, WI)

Can you have a post dedicated to the how the rushing games of the NFCN are shaping up? it doesn't have to be soon but between preseason and regular season maybe?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:54 PM)

We'll see if we can do that.

droog (minnesota)

Kevin, now that Aaron Rodgers is approaching 30 and nearing the twilight of his great career, how long do you think the Packers window of opportunity will stay open for?

Kevin Seifert
  (2:55 PM)

Oh, I would say he is in the prime, not twilight. They should have 5-6-7 more years, at least, with him as an MVP-caliber quarterback.

Kevin Seifert
  (2:55 PM)

OK everyone, thanks for sticking through the tech glitches. Have a great week!
