Howdy, everybody. Let's do it again this week. What's on your minds? Fire away with the questions.
With Jantz at quarterback, do you think that the Cyclones are any more or less likely to win 6 games this year?
No, not particularly. It's about the same. He and Jared Barnett are both really, really close. The biggest thing for Jantz has to be turnovers. He threw 11 picks in just over six games. He can't do that anymore. I loved his poise in the fourth quarter of games early last season, but Iowa State doesn't have a very explosive offense. Every possession needs to be taken advantage of. I'm sure he knows that, too.
David, A friend has bet me a hotdog and a Coke that WVU will go undefeated in conference play in their first year in the Big 12. I claim they will have at least two lossses. Who wins the bet?
Break out the ketchup and mustard, Aaron. We've got a winner.
Dubbs... A lot of talk about Landry Jones being under appreciated by Sooner fans. It seems his quite, reserved demeanor is keeping him him in background, not only in the eyes of the fans, but the national media as well. Interesting to hear your thoughts on this?
It's an interesting dichotomy for sure. I talked about this a little bit today, but you can see it on the blog tomorrow. He's not a real compelling personality, but he's one of the most compelling storylines of the entire season this year. He could win the Heisman and have an undefeated team. He could also have like, 25 TDs, 15 INTs and an eight-win team. I'm excited to see which it is. He's a really meek guy, and that's earned him some respect on this team over time. He's matured into a leader who only speaks when he needs to. Guys listen.
Is OU going to be able to overcome all the injuries and suspension and people leaving this year to make a run for the championship?
National title, I don't believe so. Big 12 title, yes. The Sooners are a very, very narrow favorite, but favorites none the less. The problem is there are six contenders who could all win it. Think of it like a golf tournament. This league has the Sooners at like -7, and five other teams at -4 or lower. They've got to be great or somebody's going to step up and beat them. This league is too deep and too many teams will be in contention.
Will Malcolm Brown live up to the hype and emerge as an elite RB for Texas?
If you didn't watch the Big12 Preview last night on ESPNU, I declared WVU as my favorite to win the conference with OU as another possibility. What do you think of my prediction?
Reasonable. You could make a case for that pretty easily. WVU's at least had a consistent depth chart this offseason. There's been so much upheaval at OU. We'll see how much the losses and suspensions show up on the field.
Besides Kenny Stills, who would you like to see wear a dress in the Big12?
Well, that's officially one of the weirdest questions I've gotten on this chat.
Senor Ubben, outside of OU/Tejas (in the B12) does any team have a better recruiting situation than WVU? WVU still has strong connections to the hotbeds of FLA/DMV/Western PA while now having opportunities to get into Texas. Thanks!Tasty Mushuk
Interesting question. WVU will be drawing from a lot of different wells in the future. I might actually go with TCU as the best recruiting situation ahead of WVU. Them or Baylor. Maybe Texas Tech. We've seen results from all of those schools, and less so with WVU just yet. Baylor and TCU's location and recent success has set them up for big results on the recruiting trail.
The fans on the blog believe you put a curse on the team you like the most on the blog. There has been much debate between WVU fans and OU fans of who has the curse. So who do you like more, OU or WVU?
Ha, safe to say that was Texas A&M last year. I was shocked to see a team that talented flounder like the Aggies did. I don't think I'm much higher on WVU or OU than most people around the country, but I've definitely written about WVU a lot. There's some big talents and big personalities on the team, and the program is new. I'm doing my part to educate the fans on their new neighbors.
Why is there so much hype surrounding WVU this year while the Frogs are getting so little? Yes, the Mountaineers stomped Clemson to finish last season, but there are still question marks around the defense and the offense may be a bit overrated. TCU has a better running game and comparable playmakers at QB and wideout.
Good points about the offense, but you can't ignore the defensive losses. TCU wasn't amazing defensively last year, and losing Deryck Gildon and Tanner Brock is probably enough to take down TCU from winning the Big 12. WVU lost guys from last year's team, but they've got a new defensive scheme and the offense has more exciting playmakers and played in a bigger bowl game. The gap between the two teams isn't that large, but hype aside, the distance between the two in the rankings isn't very wide.
Who is your perfect woman? Shall we double date?
Y'all are getting weird today.
Do you think the Big 12 Teams are excited to play in a different venue like the mountains of West Virginia? How many games do you think you will cover here? Thanks for the good coverage.
I think so. It'll be fun. The travel won't be the easiest, but it won't be a major issue. I think the fans are more excited than the teams. It's new blood and a new city to explore. I loved my time there this spring. I'm sure I'll be back this fall, as long as WVU holds up their end of the deal. All that means is win.
Ubbs, I'm a big fan but you have never picked one of my questions to answer. So here goes. Since I am such a huge fan of college football, the Big XII in particular, if I had your job do you think I would consider it more fun or more work?
It's a ton of both, and I love it.
Hey, Ubben. Now that I'm back to 100% and killing it in fall camp, do you think I will get 1,000 yards?
I haven't been out to Lubbock this spring, so I haven't gotten a chance to see. Once the hits are live and everyone's full speed all the time, we'll see. A 1,000-yard season is within reach, but I want to see him really get on the field and play before I make that call.
Ubbie, How can there be so much talk about OU winning the conference? Texas has the deeper defense and hasn't endured all of the preseason losses (injuries/suspensions). Is there something that I'm missing here?
It's all about the quarterbacks, baby. If Texas had a good one, there's no doubt the Longhorns would be the Big 12 favorite in my mind. They don't have a good one, and my position rankings made it clear: Texas has the worst QB situation of anybody in the league. You can't ignore that, and it knocks UT down from a national title contender to a dark horse in the Big 12 title chase. Probably a nine-win team. OU, meanwhile, has Landry Jones. He's got his faults, but he's a big-time player.
OU seems to be losing players at an alarming rate. What's going on up there, did all those players just suddenly wake up one morning and realize they weren't in Texas anymore?
I really don't know what the deal is. They had a ton of attrition last year at tight end, and our SoonerNation editor tweeted today that eight of the 19 signees from the 2011 class are gone. That's troubling. It's been a lot of different issues, including injuries. The why isn't too important. The fact that it's happening will hurt OU down the road.
Dave - Do you have breaking news on Oklahoma? in your biggest disappointment article you stated that King was suspended. Can you clarify this or was it Mcgee. thanks
My bad on that. Misspoke. It's been fixed. Meant Stacy McGee.
OSU has been getting a lot of good recruits lately. Do you think that the pokes have a legitimate shot at staying among the best in the conference and competing for the title year in and year out under Gundy?
Any word on when that Big 12 TV deal will be signed?
Still finalizing the details.
Will Texas Tech be a condenter this year in the big 12?
You can pick one coach and use them at any program. Who ya got and where?
Chris Petersen at Texas. Would be fascinating to see it.
Ubben, when will you and ESPN reevaluate OU's chances to win the Big XII? I see a repeat of their 2009 season when Bradford did not have the line to protect him. Jones may end up with same fate, since he has displayed a huge weakness when he is under pressure. IMO the BIG XII is wide open!
All very good points. I could definitely see that happening, Chandler. The league is as wide open as I remember it this year, and it's going to be fun to watch.
I doubt you'll know know any more than me on this one, but any news on Jalen Saunders?
No news on the Fresno State transfer at OU the last I heard. Still awaiting official clearance, but he's practicing with the team.
Is LaDarius Brown (TCU) in your top three for Big 12 Newcomer of the Year?
Nope. I'd probably go with Trey Metoyer at OU, Wes Lunt or Blake Jackson at Oklahoma State and Brandon Moore at Texas. Not a lot of opportunity for Brown to make nearly as big of an impact at TCU than the other three. TCU doesn't really need him right now, even though he sounds like a great player. His time is coming.
What will OU do when Landry is gone? Start Blake Bell, or someone else?
That's the assumption, but we could have interesting derby between him and Drew Allen after this year. That backup spot is still being settled right now. Keep an eye on it. Landry Jones beat out Allen to win the backup job in 2009, and by Week 2, he was the starter. You never know with this stuff.
Hey Dave, what are you expecting from Texas from a record standpoint this season?
Another thing Jason Sehorn declared is that the Big 12 is the 4th or 5th best conference in college football. I call shenanigans on that and I think he is way off base. What say you Ubben?
Shenanigans. Big 12 will probably be behind the SEC this year when it's all said and done, but it's silly to suggest it's behind the Big Ten or Pac-12 this year. This league's depth is ridiculous.
Why do you hate Tech so much? We'll win the Big 12 this year, and I will laugh at you.
Lets pretend for a moment that you are a CB in the Big 12. Which opposing WR would make you most nervous in man coverage?
Tavon Austin, easily. He plays bigger than his size, and he's so shifty. He's going to get open on you. That's why I probably would have picked Ryan Broyles last year ahead of Justin Blackmon on this question. You can cover Blackmon, but he's just going to make a play over you or beat you by a step. Broyles might run a route and leave you in a different zip code altogether. That's embarrassing. Austin can do a lot of the same.
I don't understand the success everyone is predicting for WVU in the Big 12. They lost to Louisville and Syracuse last year, and almost lost multiple other games against a very weak Big East. Please explain....
Teams that return tons of talent tend to improve a lot in the college game?
Will Gundy break out into a dance this season?
Love the blog! What percentage chance would you give OSU to win in Norman this year Dave?
25. Sooners and their fans are going to be out for blood in this one. Sorry, guys.
What is it going to take for Jantz to get benched this year? Will Rhoads let him play through any early struggles or will he yank him in favor of Barnett at the first hint of trouble?
Turnovers and inaccuracy. Completing 53 percent of his passes isn't going to get it done. A lot of that was error on the part of Jantz. Barnett wasn't any better (worse, actually, at 50 percent), but the ISU offense has to be more efficient. Rhoads isn't going to have a tight leash, but if you're throwing ball after ball into the dirt or turnover it over, you don't give him much choice.
Which visitor is likely to upset the Sooners in Norman this year, ND or KSU?
K-State. But the Sooners win both games comfortably.
What do you think of WVU's new grey uniforms?
They're just OK.
Dave, Can Big12 defenses stop Texas' 2012 run game? I am a little concerned that they could go undefeated using a ball control offense. Wake me from this boring nightmare, please.
Texas has the personnel, but let's see some production. Texas' yards per carry last year was pretty underwhelming. I'm not treating this running game like the juggernaut it is on paper until it can show that production on the field. That said, if the Horns' running game gets rolling, look out. The QBs need to be solid to get defenses to loosen up.
Five cities have bid to host the new Champions Bowl Houston, San Antonio, Arlington, Atlanta and New Orleans - who wins the bid in your opinion?
Arlington. Deep, deep pockets, and a superior stadium. Never bet against Jerry Jones in matters of cash and influence.
I've tempered my expectations this year for my Horned Frogs with all the off the field distractions. Can they still get to 9 wins?
Yes. Definitely. Maybe even 10-11 if the ball bounces their way in a game or two. Ask K-State about that one.
How different do you think the media's perception of OSU would be if Chelf was named the starter?
Not very different, but the Pokes would be much less interesting.
Who will throw for the most yards this yr?
David, Whats your best guess on Lunt's TD/INT ratio?
I'll go with 33/12.
Has the Grant of Rights been signed yet?
I believe the 13-year grant of rights is part of the new TV deal. It's been agreed to in principle, but not officially executed yet, as I understand it. However, the six-year grant of rights has been officially signed.
Reese's peanut butter cups or Reese's Pieces?
Will Mike Davis become a star for the Horns in 2012?
He'll have a good year, but when it comes to Texas receivers, this year will be all about Jaxon Shipley. He's got to stay healthy, but he may mature into a real star this year. He just needs a QB to get him the ball consistently. I'll be interested to see his yards per target numbers.
Do you think KU will be competitive this year with Weis as head coach?
Hey Dave, who are the best two or three coaching personalities in the conference?
Dana Holgorsen. Art Briles. Tommy Tuberville.
Who do you think is the breakout WR for OSU? Anderson, Stewart, Jackson?
Why do you think so many people overlook Stedman Bailey?
I'm really not sure. He'll definitely benefit from the bigger spotlight in the Big 12. He's a big-time player.
Call it now: What will be the biggest upset in the Big 12 this season?
I don't know if I'd pick it, but West Virginia, beware of Iowa State.
Thanks for all the questions, folks. See you again next week.
