Hello chat nation. What's on your mind?
I returned to following NASCAR in 2006 (last followed in the 1960's). Was Jeff Gordon always this much of a whiner?
Jeff is just frustrated because he needs a win to make the Chase. It was just a heat of the moment thing.
How impressive was the performance of the 88 team on Sunday? This team is miles ahead of where it was last year.
You're right Todd. They took a car that hadn't even been on the track all wekeend and finished fourth. The confidencve level for those guys is soaring at the right time.
Hi Terry, Has Harvick set the NASCAR record for most crew chiefs ever?
I doubt it, and technically, this is a new CC. It's back to his old CC.
What do you know about the moving parts on the rear suspension on the HMS cars that #2 was complaining about?
A little bit. The Hendrick cars are crabbing down the straight, meaning it looks as though the body is a little crooked toward the wall. When the cars come out of the turn, the weight shifts and rear suspension allows the chassis to shift a little.
Does Nascar not understand the concept of local yellows (road courses)? They throw a full course caution on EVERYTHING.
If NASCAR ran more road courses they probably would use more local yellows, but since most of their drivers aren't accustomed to the concept, NASCAR feels it a little dangerous most of the time.
Hi Terry - who's your top 5 this weekend? Dark horse for the win?
Brad K, Kyle, Gordon, Bowyer and Junior. My darkhorse is Happy Harv with Gil Martin as his CC.
Bruton blamed the low number of cautions on the progressive banking at BMS and reduced it to one-lane racing. The low number of cautions continued and therefore had nothing to do with the progressive banking at BMS. I for one will miss the side-by-side small track racing
He blamed the fewer cautions on the fact that the progressive banking allowed the cars to go 3-wide. Grinding the top lane will keep that from happening, which should cause more bumping and banging like the old days.
I saw Rick Hendrick and Matt Kenseth talking before the race at Michigan and was wondering if Matt could be going to SHR?
Absolotely not. He's going to the 20 car at Gibbs.
Terry, Will Brad K. still be the driver to beat at Bristol with the "new" track configuration??? Kyle had a lot of success with the old config.
It's a complete unknown now with the track changes. I think both drivers sill will be competing to win there, but someone else may emerge with the new situation
Terry, do you know if anyone can clinch a chase spot this weekend or are there still too many races remaining?
Yes, some guys can officially clinch.
I heard the announcers during the first practice Saturday kind of ripping into Kyle for running the Nationwide race and not staying to get the 18 into race shape. Your thoughts on this? Thanks
I agree. I thought it was a bad decision to fly to Montreal and race when he should be concentrating on trying to make the Chase.
Since Jack Villenueve is so popular at Penske , is Roger considering Jack for a full time cup ride and NW schedule in the #22?
If Rowdy, Gordon and Edwards miss the chase do you expect NASCAR to tweek the rules again to prevent that from happening again?
No, but I do expect them to give a few bonus points to the regular season points leader.
Why isn't Kurt Busch in a quality ride for next year yet?? What are the odds he ends up in the 39 car next year?
That will be Newman if they have the sponsorship. Kurt still needs to prove to some team owners and sponsors and he can act like a big boy.
What is your take on the fan that through the shoe that Danica ran over while leading?
Ridiculous and dangerous. If that person can be found, he or she should be banned from ever attending abother race.
Do you think Chad Knaus has gotten the credit he deserves for the reconstruction job he's done on the #88 team?
Steve Letarte deserves that credit, but it doesn't hurt being in the same building with the 48 guys every week.
Are you hearing that Jeff Gordon will be running a part-time schedule in 2013 like Mark Martin?
No. Gordon will run full-time in 2013. I'll be shocked if he doesn't.
I think Danica Patrick should be banned from NASCAR because of all the cars she's wrecked.
Ah, I'll first DP hater of the day.
Chances my man Jeff Gordon makes the chase?
I'd say less than 50/50 now, which would be his odds of winning one of the next three races. That what he needs. But he does run well at Atlanta.
Does Johanna Long have a Sprint Cup future?
I hope so, but that's a long way away, no pun intended. I think she has a lot of talent, but she needs financial backing to get in a quality ride and see what she can do.
there is nother wrong with danica patrick she is a good driver lol
Danica is the best driver out there, but she's far from the worst.
Between Danica and Jr. who is faster on a road course.
Now that's an interesting question. I've been shocked at how well DP has raced on the road courses. She just might beat her boss on that one.
No they won't. Drivers complain about other drivers all the time. Take it with a grain of salt and move on.
Any chance Burton isn't in the 31 next year
That's another good question. Burton has a contract through 2013, but I'm starting to wonder if CAT might want a change there. However, the logical move would be to run Jeff for a farewell tour in 2013 and give the ride to Austin in 2014.
4 HMS engine failures but not on the #88? How lucky can you get?
You could say the same thing about Kasey and Newman.
How is racing going to be different in this weekend Bristol race from the first?
No one knows for sure, but it should makes things tighter since drivers won't be able to run up high as much.
With Dodge gone, for 2013 will Robby Gordon Racing be making a deal with RCR for engines and chasiss?
He may shop around, but I think Robby's days in Cup may be numbered.
Would you have thought that Danica would have been a better road racer in a stock car then she was in indycar?
No. But one reader brought up and interesting point on that. The stock cars have power steering, so while the car is bigger and heavier, it's actually easier to steer.
If you could travel to th past, what former driver that is no longer with us would you love to sit down with an interview?
Hmmm. That's interesting. I'd like to know what Earnhardt Sr. thinks of the racing today. And I'd like to talk to Davey Allison. I think we would have won several championships had he lived.
When the race comes to Atlanta I think of Carl straightening out Brad. Do you think Carl has forgiven Brad for Dega or is Carl still angry?
All water under the bridge.
Hey Terry, love your work. After a disappointing result at Michigan, how do you think the 48 team bounces back Saturday night in Bristol. Thanks!
I think the 48 will be fine. You're going to have one of two really tough moments like that one over the course of the season. That team has been through it before and always comes back without a problem. The main thing is just making sure the engine situation is rectified.
Terry, an additon to Saul from San Diego's question, do you think racing today would be different if Earnhardt Sr. was still alive? The cars, the way people race each other, safety, etc...
I think Junior's career would have been more successful with his dad's guidance. I think DEI would have survived and become one of the best teams in Cup. But honestly, safety probably would not have advanced as quickly. Dale's death forced NASCAR to take a hard look at things and make changes they might not have made as soon as they did.
Oh and how to I score pit passes for Saturday night ...???
It's all in who you know Griffin.
Terry - how serious a contender is the Biff for the title?
Very serious. He has his best shot ever, I think. One thing that could help him if he's in it at the end. Homestead is one of Biff's best tracks.
Other than A. Dillon and Stenhouse who do you think will be the next NW driver to make the jump to the Cup series and when will it happen
I think several guys can get there and will get there eventually. _ Buescher is one. Ty Dillon is another. And Bayne should get a cup ride in 2014 if he runs well in NW next year, which he will.
TB--Justin Allgaier seems to be stuck in the Nationwide Series, even though he's won some races. I heard that EGR wanted to put him in a 3rd car, but couldn't find funding. Think anybody will give him a chance soon?
It's all about the money Mack. It's what sponors are willing to do.
Hi Terry! Did Kyle run in Montreal strictly because he knew he would be one of the few top-talent guys out there and it would be an opportunity to win in his 54 car?
I'm sure he felt he could win it and that was part of it. Maybe he feels he needs a win in that car to keep Monster Energy happy.
How much money do i need to start a quality cup team and not a start and park team.
To start one? A minimum of 30 million dollars. You need a building, equipment, employees, haulers, cars and a quality driver to pay.
Hi Terry! What is the one track that the drivers dislike racing at the most? I would have to think they despise plate-racing...
You'd be right. Drivers don't like it if they feel the outcome is out of there hands, which it often is in the plate races.
Hi Terry! If Kyle were to move KBM into Sprint Cup next year (completely hypothetical), what results would you expect?
Not happening, but I wouldn't expect much because his NW team hasn't been so hot. It would take a lot more employees, and top quality people who want big bucks, to be competitive.
Will the Truck Series have 22 races next year or will they go back to 25
I hope they add a couple more.
Do you think Jeff Gordon, Kenseth, Tony Stewart, Biff and those guys will hang up the helmet before that get to the Jeff Burton stage of their careers?
It's hard to quit when people still are willing to pay you millions of dollars. You want to bank that money while you can get it. But I don't see Gordon doing that. He has more money than he could ever spend and he has a wonderful young family and lots of other interests.
Old "Exciting Bristol Saturday, or boring lame Bristol? Thoughts please!!
I'll say somewhere in between. It will have more banging, but I don't expecvt it to be the wild old days like it once was.
Isn't it possible that it isn't Burton but RCR that is the problem.
Very possible. I don't think Jeff has forgotten how to drive. But Jeff is 45 and it tough to get new sponsors and quaolity rides once you reach that age.
joey in the 22 or sam for next year
I'm going with Sam at this point. He really helped himself at Michigan.
If Sadler wins the NW title any chance RCR and CAT puts him in the 31 next year if they decide to make a driver change
I've heard that isn't likely.
With that being said, Danica really got screwed on all 3 NW road courses...
True, punted by JV in one, a wreck in front of her in another, and a shoe devil in the last one.
D you think Sam Hornish Jr has proved enough to keep his ride in 2013 in Sprint Cup?
I think Sam has really helped himself in recent weeks. I don't know that it's a done deal, but he has a good shot at it. A lot depends on what Shell/Pennzoil wants to do.
Ok, so is JG getting a bit "crotchety" in his older age? Why all the 88 hate on the pass?
Just one of those spur of the moment things. Jeff is pressing to make the Chase and he's under a lot of pressure.
Hi Terry! Do you expect the JGR plans for next year to be announced at Atlanta?
That would seem to make sense since it's Home Depot's headquarters. But they may want to wait until closer to the end of the season. Joey still has an outside shot of making the Chase. It would be awkward to announce it before that is decided.
Right now, do you rate Michael Waltrip Racing as a better them than RCR?
MWR is running better than RCR right now. The irony of it is they are doing it with Scott Miller running ths how. He was at RCR last year.
Say you put all of the start & park drivers in first-rate equipment--who would do the best?
Good question. I'll go with Reed Sorenson.
Gotta runs folks. You guys had some great questions today. Have a great week and enjoy Bristol Saturday night. Should be fun to see how it changes. I'm out. Peace.
