Chat with Matt Williamson

Matt Williamson
  (12:03 PM)

Hey Everyone! Been a while! Great to be back though.

Blueman (Indy)

Welcome back Matt!

Matt Williamson
  (12:04 PM)

Thanks Blueman!!!! Had some issues with signing in-they changed things around a bit. But I am back Baby!

newtles (houston)

how do you foresee the Patriots backfield working out this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:05 PM)

I would think that Ridley will have a real similiar role to BJGE-short yardage, grind it out when Pats have the lead. Woodhead should remain in his exact role, but maybe with fewer touches, as Vereen is going to demand playing time.

Didier (New York)

What are your early impressions of RG3? The Skins offense looks ultra conservative, though not surprised.

Matt Williamson
  (12:06 PM)

It does, but that isn't a huge worry for me yet. Shanny will bring him along slowly but surely. The Skins' OL is my biggest worry. He has been under constant duress and a pressure. I thought RG3 played better in Week 1 than Week 2.

JWR (Chicago)

Who was the toughest player for you to rate? Why?

Matt Williamson
  (12:07 PM)

Peyton Manning-no question. For obvious reasons really. Should he rank with Brady/Brees/Rodgers or is he now a middle of the road starter who struggles to drive the football? We really don't know yet.

Doc Holliday (Tombstone)

I'm your huckleberry Matt! Why Kate, you're not wearing a bustle.

Matt Williamson
  (12:08 PM)

Oh you're no daisy! You're no daisy at all! As for Newton's fantasy season-he will produce. No doubt. Can't see him matching the rushing TDs though, but expecting more from him as a passer.

Eric (Paris, Fr.)

M-Dub finally! Will you continue the chats through the season or your starting TV career won't allow that? Please say you'll keep on with us!!!

Matt Williamson
  (12:09 PM)

No TV career here Eric!...yet...be here every WED at noon. Wouldn't miss it!

Johnny (Denver)

If you're detroit what do you give up for MJD and why haven't they done it yet?

Matt Williamson
  (12:10 PM)

Cincy is the team that I think should attack MJD most aggressively. But what is the cost? Maybe a 2nd and 4th rounder? For DET, that is a ton of resources invested in RB, but it does make sense for them as well in my opinion. Could make their O the best in football.

Dan (MA)

What is your take on Ryan Tannehill winning the job? Can he pull off 5-6 wins this year with that group of WRs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

5 or 6 wins seems about right with a good D and young QB. Doesn't mean it would be an unsuccesful season either. But wow, does he need WRs! I like Tannehill a lot and did coming out of A&M as well. Has all the tools. Nothing looks overwhelming to him either.

mike (new jersey)

how dangerous can the steeler be on offense now that wallace will report soon? top 7 or 8?

Matt Williamson
  (12:12 PM)

Seems reasonable. Still some questions at RB and with the OL, but I bet the OL shakes out and gets quite good once they establish some continuity.

Leibniz (Brooklyn)

I went back and re-read your and Mike Sando's offseason breakdown of NFCW quarterbacks, and it seems like you cannot be surprised about what is going on in Arizona and Seattle. What's your best guess regarding who the division's four starters will be at the end of the season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:13 PM)

End of season starters in NFC West: Wilson, Bradford, Skelton, Smith...but I also think we could see Lindley or Kaepernick by the end.

Blueman (Indy)

Wilson looked that good or has Flynn been that mediocre?

Matt Williamson
  (12:14 PM)

Both, but more of Wilson looking great-albeit against backup Ds most of the time....but he can only play against who is lined up opposite him. Wilson has been superb.

Justin (Worcester, MA)

Matt, are you a fan of the addition of Demps to NE?

Matt Williamson
  (12:16 PM)

Not even sure he makes the team, but he was used sorta like Rainey or Harvin at Florida. GREAT speed, but sort of a WR/RB tweener type. In fact, similar to Woodhead. But can you keep two of those types on the roster?

Brian (Fishers, IN)

Reasonable expectations for Colts in 2012: 5-12? I know Luck has looked good so far, but this team has absolutely no depth.

Matt Williamson
  (12:17 PM)

Zero depth and I expect the D to really struggle. Doubt they go 5-12, as they won't play 17 games...but I think a 5 win season might be about the best we should expect.

Joe Flacco (Baltimore, MD)

What do you think about me this year now that I get to run more of a no huddle offense? Cam has set me free lol.

Matt Williamson
  (12:18 PM)

About time! I like it for sure and that is what Flacco ran in college much of the time. Still thinking BALT is a run-first though.

Mike H (Acworth, GA)

How many wins will it take the Browns current regime for them to keep their jobs heading into next year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:19 PM)

Hard to guage the tolerence of a new owner, but I would think six or fewer wins could spell doooom.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Ben Tate could start for roughly ___ teams this year...

Matt Williamson
  (12:21 PM)

Tate is strong, has good size and is quite fast. But he doesn't have a lot of wiggle, so I think he is strictly a Shanny/Texans type zone RB. So that limits the number of teams he would truly start for, but I hear where you are coming from and he is certainly one of the very best backup RBs in the NFL.

Blueman (Indy)

With cap space next year and another year drafting near the top can the Colts get the pieces for their 3-4 next year or will it take 2 more seasons to really load up?

Matt Williamson
  (12:22 PM)

They should be super aggressive this upcoming offseason, esp on D. Could pay off huge. Maybe they can swing a deal like STL did to move out of their draft spot with a team that needs a QB. And Indy should have a ton of cap room. Can they conten in 2013? Perhaps

Eric (Chicago)

I count 14 teams Tate could start for!

Matt Williamson
  (12:24 PM)

Let's hear them....off top of my head, withuot really breaking it down by scheme, I will say: Indy, PGH Maybe, Cincy, Jets, Denver, Det, GB, Maybe Dallas, Wash (IDEAL), Maybe ATL

Big Rob (Philly)

How concerned should I be as an Eagles fan with the lack of discipline on D so far and the inability to get off the feild on 3rd downs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:25 PM)

Not time to be officially worried, but concern is a good word for the emotion you should be feeling Big Rob

Brian (Siloam, AR)

First chat in awhile demands awesomeness. What's booming on the ipod M-dub?

Matt Williamson
  (12:27 PM)

It does demand awesomeness, which I am delivering...but not in the way of tunes. My kids and parents are here...chaos. School needs to start!!!!

Anderson (Brooklyn)

Who are the best coverage LBs in the NFL right now?

Matt Williamson
  (12:28 PM)

I will def overlook some, but a few that stand out are Lee, Willis, Bowman, Urlacher still, Weatherspoon

Jerry (Texas)

You mentioned Colin Kaepernick being the Niner QB by the end of the season, does this mean you think Smith will stink it up?

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

Not a Smith believer and I went out on a bit of a limb and predicted SEA to win the NFC West. If things go wrong in SF, CK could possibly-possibly-see late season action

Brian (MA)

Thoughts on Chandler Jones so far?

Matt Williamson
  (12:29 PM)

Stud in the making

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

What does your scouting eagle eye say about Doug "Ray Rice 2.0" Martin? Does he have that kind ofe ceiling, and will he make LaGarette Punch strictly a backup?

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

Blount will be the backup, but get carries on early downs here and there in a run heavy attack. I like Martin a lot, but don't see a super high ceiling...also has a high floor. He will be succesful, but I don't see him being in Rice's class per say.

V-Jax (TBay)

70 rec, 1200 yds, 10 TD. Over/Under, Matt?

Matt Williamson
  (12:30 PM)

Over, Under, Under

TSM (California)

That Melvin Ingram sure seems to be the beast they said he was. Great luck for him to fall to the Chargers like he did. Has to be in the running for DROY if he keeps this up.

Matt Williamson
  (12:31 PM)

Very much agree and he was going to be my DROY pick...but went with C Jones instead. Love Ingram

Ben (USA)

How well will forte do in fantasy w/ bush eating into his yardage and especially his td total

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Still thinks Forte has big FF year. Never has been the goal line RB. Will catch plenty of passes. Bush might actually keep him fresher for the entire season. Liking that O

Awayne (Indy)

Everyone says the Cowboys need a GM,but with Jones always getting invoved who whould take the job?

Matt Williamson
  (12:33 PM)

Bet he pays well though...

Jake (Miami)

I keep hearing rumors that Ireland might try to trade for Wallace from Pitt. do you bye it?

Matt Williamson
  (12:34 PM)

Miami and many other teams sure could use Wallace, but at this point Pittsburgh has to view themself as a contender. Would take a lot to pry him away now.

jt (tampa)

CedBen does he have a nice bounce back with GB? 1000 Yds possible?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

My thoughts on Benson in GB are pretty simple. He won't help in passing game as a receiver, but he will consistently exploit un-stacked boxes behind a good run blocking OL. 1000 is possible, but it will be a grind.

Anderson (Brooklyn)

Matt, do you see Reggie Bush reproducing last year's success?

Matt Williamson
  (12:35 PM)

No, but more catches and more productive in passing game

Rob (San Antonio)

Were you surprised when the Steelers took Mendenhall off the PUP list and how soon do you think he will see action?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

Was surprised, but we never know about injuries. It just means to me that they think he will be able to play before Week 7

Bob (Florida)

Chris Johnson looks back to his old self... but what about their line?

Matt Williamson
  (12:36 PM)

He does look great. And yes, I really worry about TENN's interior OL. But Hutch might help some.

Hanson (DC)

Can Garcon really be a No.1 WR? He has the physical tools but he is sometimes lazy on his routes and seems to drop some easy balls.

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

Agree with your assessment and think he is more suited to be a strong #2 WR

Murph (Portland, OR)

Which non first rounder rooks do you have your eye on?

Matt Williamson
  (12:37 PM)

All of them of course, but Wilson has to be at the top of that list

Allen (Minny)

With the up grade in the secondary, how many sacks do you think I can get this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:38 PM)

Is the secondary that much improved? A lot of rooks back there. If Winfield and Cook are healthy though, that will certainly help. But if the secondary is improved, the opponents might not throw as high of a %

P-Nasty (OHIO)

Do you think the Bengals running back combo will be better than last years? PS WHO DEY!!!!!!!!

Matt Williamson
  (12:39 PM)

I think BJGE is far from spectacular, but is solid. Still, he is in for some rough sledding, as he will quickly find out that he isn't in NE any more and that some Ds will actually bring bodeis near the LOS

Bert (St. Paul, MN)

Does Stephen Hill have the physical make up to become a top 10 WR or do you see him as more of a solid starter type in the league.

Matt Williamson
  (12:40 PM)

Want to watch him more, but has a long way to go with his routes for #1 type distinction. Big tall fast guy right now, but not a total package for the position

Hank (Arlen)

Luck Gabbert and Locker give the AFC South 3 starters in first or 2nd year, bright for the future but does it show that the Texans are the only team playing for this year?

Matt Williamson
  (12:41 PM)

I suppose that is true for the most part. HOUS does have some questions though. TENN could give them a run if everything breaks right/wrong.

Steve (Bristol)

If Garcon can be a strong #2, can Hankerson take the #1 spot? Or Morgan? And three seem to fit that big, physical WR mold, and all three have pretty good to very good speed.

Matt Williamson
  (12:42 PM)

Well, not all teams have what I describe as a #1 WR. Might only be 12-15 of them in the NFL in reality.

Jeff (Albuquerque,NM)

Whats your impression of Derrick Wolfe so far?

Matt Williamson
  (12:43 PM)

Been very disruptive and has exceeded my expectations thus far for sure. Wonder how well he can hold up with a lot of NFL snaps at that position in his rookie year though-not a great body type for such things.

Karyn (NJ)

Is Steven Jackson still the lead RB with the Rams? I read that Isiah Pead is on his heels for carries and Jeff Fisher thinks a ton of him.

Matt Williamson
  (12:44 PM)

I bet Fisher rides Jackson like crazy. Tons of carries-true workhorse. I still think Jackson has enough in the tank to handle such a load.

Christen (Minnesota)

With Simpson suspended for three games, do you think it will hurt our continuity we forged in preseason?

Matt Williamson
  (12:45 PM)

Not too much. Very high on Simpson here. Would have loved to have him in there for Week 1.

Tarek (NYC)

Hey Matt, the Raiders front 4 has looked awesome so far this preseason, do you think the defense as a whole will improve from last year's joke of season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Well said about the Front 4-and that can make problems go away. I also like OAK's safeties. But I really dislike their CBs, LBs and D depth as a whole as the season wears on and injuries set in.

Dave (RI)

13-14 wins for NE?

Matt Williamson
  (12:46 PM)

Yup...easy schedule sure helps

Brett (Ottawa)

Matt, nice work with the top 200! Good to see you do some TV/Video! Do you think D. Thomas and Manning are on the same page when the season starts? Like Peyton said, he's never had a skilled receiver that size before, so seems like it could eventually be a pretty spectacular combo.

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Thanks! I think that relationship will take a lot of time. Manning to Harrison/Wayne wasn't built in a day. And Thomas isn't a super precise route runner. All kinds of upside though for sure.

Paul (Boise)

Is there another line in the NFL that worries you as much as the Cards?

Matt Williamson
  (12:47 PM)

Nope...it is really terrible

Mike (Norwich, CT)

Chris Sprow's latest insider piece lists the top 15 RB combos in the league. Peyton Hillis/Dexter McCluster/Jamal Charles didn't make the cut in his eyes. Where would this trio fit on your list?

Matt Williamson
  (12:48 PM)

I haven't read Chris' article yet, but KCs RBs would be very high on my list. Charles will explode this year.

Eric (Arizona)

Do you think Darren McFadden should be a 1st rd pick in most all FF drafts?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Most Def

Drew (San Francisco)

I know your high on the NFC in general. Anyway the Seahawks squeak in the wildcard spot?

Matt Williamson
  (12:49 PM)

Picking SEA to win the West actually

jt (tampa)

Dallas line looks dreadful...

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

That it does. Knew the interior would be bad. But Dallas at least has better players up front than Zona.

Drew (San Francisco)

Over under Nate Washington - 75/1100/10tds

Matt Williamson
  (12:50 PM)

Going UNDER accross the board. Britt will play-and excel when on the field. Hunter and Cook will get quite a bit of catches too.

Adrian (Minny)

When I return do you think my Oline is improved enough to open up holes in the running game?

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

For sure-and Minny actually did a good job run blocking last year I thought.

jt (tampa)

Jets line bad too...

Matt Williamson
  (12:51 PM)

...esp at RT! Wow

Blueman (Indy)

AFC West most difficult division to read? Broncos Chargers and Chiefs all could go 6-10 or 10-6.Who lucks the like the most stable off the 3?

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Agreed...check out my Insider article that came out on Friday stating why I think KC will win the West

ASN (NY)

Giants line is pretty bad...Eli still needs to run for his life

Matt Williamson
  (12:52 PM)

Indeed...that was a little known fact from 2011

Blueman (Indy)

Speaking off bad O-lines Can the Colts be average on offense with this group?

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

I would say that is about their ceiling...rough group up front for sure

jt (tampa)

Your thoughts on P. Rivers this year.

Matt Williamson
  (12:53 PM)

Love him and love that Gates is healthy, but really worry about SD's OL and if/when Mathews is out, they won't have a fearsome running game to open up the deep ball

Paul (Boise)

I think Minny might have the most improved offense in the league. Do you agree?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

In the running for sure...have been talking that group up for a while now. Under the radar-but I bet it is effective-and gets better and better.

Mikey (Lackawanna,NY)

TRUE OR FALSE: Bills make the playoffs this season?

Matt Williamson
  (12:54 PM)

TRUE...Wild Card

Nick (Middletown, NJ) [via mobile]

How will Mario Williams do against wayne hunter week 1?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Aint gonna be pretty

Percy (Minny)

Our Oline did well in run blocking, how do you think they will do pass blocking?

Matt Williamson
  (12:55 PM)

Improved. Kalil is just a puppy, but bet that left side overall is much better in protection

Eric (Paris, Fr.)

Shaun Smith DT just released, could the Bucs snag him?

Matt Williamson
  (12:56 PM)

Think TB is looking for more penetrators and quick twitch DT types than Smith

Michelle (Tulsa)

Do you think the Bears can beat the Lions in terms of Wide receiving Corp. They have Megatron which blows B Marsh out of the water but after that it looks pretty close. Plus they have Matt Forte

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

I like DET's weapons more than CHI's, but Forte is WAY better than the Lions' RBs. But DET has Calvin J-end of story

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

In terms of both talent and opportunity...bigger year from Titus Young or Randall Cobb?

Matt Williamson
  (12:58 PM)

Bet Young sees the field more, but Cobb is the better player...pretty clearly in my opinion

Rob (San Antonio)

How will the Ravens fare without Suggs?

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

One aspect of that injury that seems to go unnoticed is how great BALT has been with edge Run D with Suggs and J Johnson...both are gone.

Matt Williamson
  (12:59 PM)

Folks, that is a wrap! Great to be back chatting! Take care all
