Chat with Farrell Evans

Buzzmaster
  (3:08 PM)

Hi folks... Farrell is having some computer issues but hopefully will be joining soon.

Farrell Evans
  (3:10 PM)

Sorry folks, I'm here. let's get started.

g.p. (nd)

Farrell, are you a member at bethpage?

Farrell Evans
  (3:11 PM)

I'm not a member but I play here a lot.

Ed (Long Island)

With Bethpage Black being your home course...how many players have come to you for inside tips? How different is the course setup from when you play it?

Farrell Evans
  (3:12 PM)

I know the course very well but players haven't asked me about getting around the place. I have give advice unsolicited to a few guys in the last couple of days, though.

Chris (Chicago)

Hey Farrell - Ryder Cup countdown is on... do the players care more about the playoffs or the Ryder Cup?

Farrell Evans
  (3:13 PM)

Trust me, you will hear guys saying that they are using the playoffs as motivation to get into the Ryder Cup, but nothing makes you focus like $67 million in total prize money.

Colin (Seattle)

Hi Farrell- Let's say for arguments sake that Nicolas Colsaerts makes the team on his own this week in Europe. Who does Captain Olazabal pick for his wild cards? (I am guessing Colsaerts will get one anyway if he doesnt make it on his own).

Farrell Evans
  (3:15 PM)

Miguel angel jimenez and David Lynn.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What did you think of Condolezza Rice & Darla Moore as the First 2 Women at Augusta?

Farrell Evans
  (3:16 PM)

Chris,I said in my piece on Monday that I thought it was good for the game, but that I hoped that these two members wouldn't settle for just making the boys club.

Josh (Miami)

Any chance for a Women's Masters?

Farrell Evans
  (3:17 PM)

Never. That would take away the exclusivity and uniqueness of the ANC been on display for just that one week of the year.

Matt (Denver)

What do you normally score at Bethpage

Farrell Evans
  (3:18 PM)

Matt,I play from the tips on the Black course, like an idiot. I can shoot anywhere from the high 70s to the low 90s, depending on the wind and how much I care about scoring that day.

JY (TO)

Have the Importance of the majors increased since Tiger came along as his infatuation with them?

Farrell Evans
  (3:20 PM)

Tiger has helped grow the interests in golf, period. And with that the majors have gotten a lot bigger. It's helped that he's won 14 of them.

JY (TO)

Anything you'd doto improve the playoff structure?

Farrell Evans
  (3:21 PM)

Nope. I've always been in favorite of the tour's plans. They would do well to continue improving the format with tweaks here and there, but it's pretty solid.

Mitch (Houston)

Do you think Tiger believes he has an advantage on the world's toughest courses such as Bethpage Black that forces shotmaking throughout the bag? Saturday of the US Open showed us he has that potential but that typically his scoring clubs let him down.

Farrell Evans
  (3:22 PM)

Mitch,Tiger knows that you need to hit fairways for the shotmaking to happen. He has proven he can do that with a driver. At Bethpage, you can't make birdies hitting irons off the tee.

g.p. (nd)

Farrell, do you think a player should be eliminated from the playoffs if they choose not to play, i.e. Jason Dufner? I realize theyre "contractors", but shouldn't they be forced to play if they want to stay alive for the big prize money?

Farrell Evans
  (3:23 PM)

No. Duf has played the minimum number to compete in the playoffs, which I think is 13 or 14. He has every right to take a week off if he likes.

Ed (Long Island)

With the rough not being as dramatic as compared to the US Open, any guess on how many strokes per round it will play easier?

Farrell Evans
  (3:24 PM)

Ed,The players aren't too optimistic that the rough is that much different than it was in 2009. The course is long and brutal and even if you could make it to the green out of the rough, how in the world would you stop it?

Shoshana (Boston)

No Poulter as a captain's pick for Ollie? He can't make it automatically

Farrell Evans
  (3:26 PM)

Ollie will pick Poulter. I would like to see him go in a different direction. Poulter is essentially an American player now. He is a natural fit for Medinah.

Shoshana (Boston)

Listening to Tiger's press conf it didn't seem like he was a big fan of the current schedule. Should there be a week off between TC and the RC?

Farrell Evans
  (3:28 PM)

Yes, absolutely. That's a brutal stretch of golf. The tour championship is a really laid back week with just 30 players, but the Ryder Cup is three Super Bowls with a week long array of dinners, pomp and circumstance and practice rounds with five to six other players. Plus they have to dress in those uniforms every day.

Shoshana (Boston)

Farrell, Bud Cauley is a rookie and has had a better year than Harris English

Farrell Evans
  (3:30 PM)

Shoshana,Good point. I talked to Bud this afternoon about how he has very quietly gotten to 35th in the standings. He reminds me a little of Luke Donald in the way he goes about things with his veteran caddie Tony Navarro. But English is very impressive. He just hasn't learned how to close on the weekends. Under-the-Radar Cauley. He's probably the Rookie of the Year, consistency-wise.

Glenn (Huntington, NY)

Have you play Red there and what kind of shape will that course be in when this is over?

Farrell Evans
  (3:30 PM)

Red is my favorite course in the park. It's not easy though.

Nick (Massachusetts)

Farrell, The stats on espn.com say that Rory has played in 12 events, so I'm assuming the minimum to play in the playoffs can't be 13 or 14, like you mentioned.

Farrell Evans
  (3:34 PM)

Rory is tour member. There may not be a minimum number of events to get in.

Jeff (Hoboken)

When do you think Tiger will win another major? Seems like the venues in 2014 and 2015 really benefit him

Farrell Evans
  (3:40 PM)

Jeff,For one, let's stop talking about venues that suit Tiger. He can win on any course. He's that good. But he's reached a stage in his career, where his nerves could be causing a delay to his return to the winner's circle in the majors. It's likely that he might back into one like Ernie did at Lytham before he goes out and wins one with his old command.

Chris (Chicago)

If a player knows they cannot win the $10MM and is playing in the Ryder Cup, any chance they skip? Or is that final payday too much no matter where you finish?

Farrell Evans
  (3:51 PM)

If you are in the Tour championship field, you have to play. Last place is like $150,000 and the tour puts you up in the Ritz-Carlton. Why wouldn't you place in twosomes for four days in perfect conditions for that kind of money?

Chris (Chicago)

Obviously, my interest in the Ryder Cup is because I will be there on Sunday - any watching tips for the Ryder Cup vs a Major?

Farrell Evans
  (3:53 PM)

Park yourself on the first tee and watch everybody tee off. Then go find the best match and try to see as much as you can of the golf course.

Chris (Chicago)

I think it is just you and I in here now...the Tiger/Rory match later this year - who is that really more important too? I think whoever wins could go on a huge run.

Farrell Evans
  (3:58 PM)

Chris to your question about the Tiger/Rory match. I don't think it means much to either golfer. They both know how deep the game is beyond the two of them. It's not like it's just the two of them and everybody else is not very good.

Bill (California)

Tell Chris that everyone in the final 30 mathematically has a chance when the TC starts.

Farrell Evans
  (4:00 PM)

Bill,That's mathematically possible, but a lot of things have to happen for the 29th or 30th guy to win. Haas won last year in 25th because Webb Simpson played pretty bad at the Tour championship and there were something other things. I think if Webb had finished second or third, Haas could not have beaten him.

Mike (nyc)

Any word on how many tees they will move up on the par 4's this weekend. Thanks

Farrell Evans
  (4:03 PM)

To Mike's question on the tees. We won't know that until the start of each round.

Farrell Evans
  (4:04 PM)

To Sue on Tiger's chances of winning five majors before he retires. It's hard to say base on his recent mental lapses in the majors. It gets harder every year you don't win one.

Chris (Chicago)

Any chance we get a Rory/Tiger match at the RC? I know the rosters are submitted without knowledge of other team's players. But why not lead with the horses from each squad.

Sue (New Jersey)

Do you think Tiger Woods will win 5 more Majors before he retires?

Farrell Evans
  (4:06 PM)

Tiger and Tory can play in the singles. It depends on the needs of the teams going into Sunday. So long until next week. Take care. And stay tuned to the golf coverage at ESPN.COM
