It's early, I hope you consider giving your opinion on this question: Who's taking over for Mickey Loomis when he goes on suspension? Unlikely Debbie Gallagher. Khai Harley perhaps?
Mike Triplett recently reported that pro scouting director Ryan Pace will be the lead guy with Harley and college scouting director Rick Reiprish also taking on addition duties. They're all good at what they do, so transition shouldn't be that huge a deal.
All I keep hearing about Matt Ryan is don't believe the hype. If he were having a bad preseason they would be smashing him to bits. Do you believe he has taken the next step?
Think Matt has improved in some ways this year, but I always thought he was talented. Think he's got great supporting cast at skill positions. But the offensive line will be the real key to how Matt and the whole offense does this year.
Pat Should the Falcons trade Michael Turner for MJD?
No, check out my blog post from yesterday on that topic. I laid out several reasons why I don't think it's a good idea -- including that I highly doubt the Jags would give up MJD for Turner.
Do you think that Jordan Shipley or Tiquan Underwood has a chance to be the starting slot receiver?
Underwood maybe. Not sure what Shipley has left. There was a reason why Bengals cut him.
Hey Pat any chance we not blacked out for all regular season home games
Think there might be some sellouts, but probably not all the games.
I see that every team in the nfc south beside the panthers has had a practice with another team (new england) are we going to have a joint practice with anyone
Nothing scheduled this year. Thinking back on Fox and Seifert days, I can't remember them doing it then either. Not sure on the Capers era. Don't know that Rivera and Hurney are big proponents of that concept.
Whats the chance panthers just carry 2 Qbs this season
Think it's a possibility. More and more teams are doing that.
when teams have practices together, do the players often share tips on getting better? or is it more the coaches sharing? also, do the players dine togeter when these practices happen? thanks.
Not sure they're sharing a lot of info. It's more just to get some work against different looks than what their own teams run. As far as dining arrangements, I really have no idea.
What do you think about the saints defense? I'm amazed how people tear up lofton I think he was a great sign
People are criticizing the Lofton signing? I haven't seen that. I think that might have been best move Saints made in the offseason. Think he's a very solid LB, who will be playing with a chip on his shoulder this year.
How much productivity does Michael Turner have left in the tank to give the Falcons?
He's not washed up. He's just not going to get 300 carries. I think he'll still get somewhere around 250 carries and be an important part of the offense.
Sapp was supposed to be working with Mccoy.....any word on tht?
Sorry - no question here, but, barring injury, there is no way Thomas Davis loses a roster spot when the trimming starts.
Probably true. But he might not be as far back as you think he is.
Who appears to have the inside track on winning the Falcons left tackle job?
It's Baker's job. Not even a competition. Only way that changes is if he gets hurt or starts the season off really badly.
I Think Atlanta should trade for MJD, unlike turner he doesnt need a lot of carries to be effective. He can take it house on his first carry
And how would the Falcons fit a huge new contract for MJD under the salary cap going forward?
Assuming that Atl is changing offensive style, it seems that M. Turner does not fit the mold anymore. Would it make sense for the Falcons to Trade Turner for a pic or two and go to bat with Snelling, Quiz and the other shifte RB they have?
Not really, think Turner still has a role. Plus, I doubt many teams out there would be willing to give up much for a 30-year-old RB that still is carrying a pretty big contract.
How do you see Bucs LB Mason Foster this year? Seemed a tad lost last year but I got a funny feeling he's one of the top tacklers in the NFL by seasons end.
Think he'll be much improved with what should be better coaching. Would also help him a lot if McCoy can stay healthy.
MJD is not a selfish back, I think he's realized that he probably wont win a super bowl and would like to cash out one more time. I'm pretty sure he wouldnt even ask for a huge raise in ATL, a shot to win a SB is all he wants
He's holding out in Jacksonville because he wants a new contract. Sure he wouldn't mind winning a Super Bowl, but that's not his motivation in the holdout.
Pat, As the Bucs I would really consider MJD in the bucs back field, in return giving back Blount and Mr trouble maker at corner. I think they would be instant playoff contenders.
And what makes you think Jags would want Talib and Blount?
Do you see Atlanta picking up a back up for Baker...? If so, who is out there?
Nobody out there right now. But could be some guys available when rosters get trimmed. Think Falcons want to see Holmes in the final two preseason games and decide if he's ready to be the backup or if they need a little insurance.
Is it a big deal if Beason or Davis dont get any preseason reps?
Beason know. But I think they need to see Davis out there to really see where he's at physically.
Appreciate you keeping a tx boy up to date on my Buccs....with Shipley being a vet does that put another receiver on the bubble or does it seems Shipley is being treated as tryout
I think Shipley s more like a tryout. He's a guy that had some ability and then tore up his knee. Bengals thought he was done so they let him go. Think Bucs want to take a look and see if they see something different than Bengals did.
I know you thought that MJD is not a good fit for the Falcons during this weeks blog. With that being said Do you think Jaquizz Rodgers is the back for the future or do the Falcons need to be active in FA next year for a back to relpace Turner?
Rodgers could end up being the back of the future. He's going to get increased role this year. If he does well, then maybe he becomes the feature guy for the long term. If not, then they'll go get somebody.
Do you think Albert Haynesworth will make any impact for the Bucs? Or was he just a waste of money?
Umm, I don't think Albert's going to have much impact for the Bucs this year because they released him right after last season.
he wants to get paid for being 90% of the teams offense and he's deserving so. If he goes to a team were he does not have to do everything he looses leverage in contract negotiations, but he gets his super bowl shot
I don't know everything in MJD's mind. But the fact is he's a 27-year-old RB. At that age, RBs tend to look for one last big pay day.
What type of numbers you expecting from VJax? 80catches/1100yds/10tds?
Yeah, roughly in that ballpark would be my guess.
Will Gary Barnidge be able to match the production that shockey had last year, or does it get shifted more to Olsen?
I don't think Barnidge will quite match Shockey's numbers. I do think Barnidge brings some positives, but I think it's more a case of Olsen's numbers rising.
Posters today seem to think that you have the power to bring MJD to the team of their choice. When did you become his agent, Pat?
HaHa, but it definitely is bringing in lots of chat questions. Not record pace, but probably busiest chat I've seen since the draft.
Pat, lets say the Bucs go through a another year of no sell outs, do you think the Glaziers will be Inclined to move them at this rate?
Where would the Glazers move them to??? In this economy, it's not like cities are out there building new stadiums to lure NFL teams. And it looks like Jaguars kind of have the London market cornered.
funny how people want to ruin the chat by nonstop MJD talk. How long do you think the Bucs starters play tonight? Do you see them running a vanilla offense or trying to open it up.
I'd like to see them open it up a little bit. I understand they don't want to show everything, but it would be nice to see a few splash plays.
Hi Pat, do you think Jordan Shirpley could become a Welker like type of player for the Bucs?
Let's see if he can run first.
If I am not mistaken, Matt Ryan has 1 year left on his current deal. If he has a breakout year as I expect, how does that affect his the Falcons ability to bring in additional talent? I know the Falcons won't let Ryan go anywhere and he will want big $$'s.
Yes, it will have a huge impact on their ability to bring in other guys in the future. I had a note day or two ago on this -- right now, Falcons already have $117 million committed toward next year's cap. Extending Ryan could lower his cap figure for next year, but would cost them a ton over the course of the new contract.
How long do we see the Falcons' starters out tonight???
I'm thinking at least the first half and maybe into the third quarter. That's the general rule of thumb for the third preseason game.
What happens when Kromer wants something done and the DC or OC who outrank him every week of the year except those 1st 6 this season disagree strongly? Or when Loomis divided charges have counter viewpoints? Seems like the chain of command is completely muddy. Will this become ugly if there are a couple of early loses?
It's far from an ideal situation, but I think they've set it up as well as they possibly could. Most of those guys have worked together for a long time and, even though Spags is new to Saints, he's a pro.
Do you see the Falcons running enough screen plays this year
Yep, pretty sure that will happen.
If Freeman plays sub-par do the Bucs cut bait?
Obviously, a very critical year for him. If he has a good year, then he probably gets a nice contract extension. If not, they probably start considering alternatives.
Do you see Ivory and Cadet making the final 53 ?
Think it's probably one or the other and not both.
Pat - What are the chances that the Falcons cut JPW and keep Dominique Davis on the 53-man roster? He's looked pretty good in the preseason and seems to be a good bit better already with more upside.
That's exactly what I would do, but not sure if Falcons will go that route.
If the Panthers have another great offensive seaon (top 5), will Richardson & Hurney be able to hold on to coach Chud, or would it cost too much considering the head coaching offers he is likely to recieve?
If they have another good season on offense, Chudzinski definitely will be a head coach somewhere next season.
Los Angeles seems to want a team. Why have two teams tried to join together (like the Giants/Jets) and build a stadium in LA? And since there are so many teams in LA (Soccer, college football) why not make a multi-purpose stadium rolled into one bigger stadium?
LA has had years to figure out a stadium plan and still hasn't come up with anything solid.
I feel as though Dekoda Watson is a better player than Quincy Black why doesn't he start?
I like what I've seen out of Watson. You might end up getting your wish.
Follow-Up to Q Dove's earlier question. If Edwards makes the roster for the Panthers, would that have any effect on them carrying only 2 QB's?
Doubt it. I saw Armanti throw a couple passes in training camp. There's a reason why he's playing WR and not QB.
no question , just info.. the falcons/dolphins game will air in the south ga area on the Cordele channel tonight
I'll share this for our South Ga friends.
When the Bucs move to the yet to be planned or built LA stadium that we are discussing for some reason, will they stay in the NFC south?
Two App. State references in one chat! Woot!
I'll give you three. Who is the best punter in App. State history? My friend Mark Royals.
Any thoughts on that Falcons interior defense?
Like what I've seen out of Jerry. Concerned about Peters' injury situation. Curious to see if Babineaux can bounce back from a rough season.
Is this Tony Gonzalez's last year no matter what? Can he be lured back if the Falcons make the NFC championship game or the Super Bowl?
I know TG has said it's 95 percent that he retires after this season. But he made similar statements the last couple years. He's always taken great care of himself. If he's still having fun, I could see him going another year ...or two.
Pat, is the panthers no. 2 corner job still up for grabs, or is the staff set on keeping captain there?
No, think it's still very much up for grabs. Ideally, they'd like Captain to be No. 3.
When are the cut dates?
Believe it's Monday for 75 and Aug. 31 for 53. But I'll double check that and will include it in a post on the blog sometime in the next few days.
Pat, Matt Ryan for the year 4,500 and 38TDs and 17 int.. what you think? also, Do you think Matt Ryan is better than matt Stafford..? Put Matt Ryan with Calvin and he have the same numbers as Stafford last year. BOOM.. what you think?
Maybe Julio ends up being semi-comparable to Calvin?
Hey Pat, who is the best defensive player in the division in your opinion?
Great question. Can't say this division has a truly dominant defensive player right now. Looking back at my NFC South top 25, I'd say the best candidates would be Brent Grimes, Jabari Greer (I know, I'm higher on him than a lot of people), Charles Johnson, Sean Weatherspoon and maybe Curtis Lofton, if he plays with the chip on his shoulder that I expect him to have.
What do you think about Dominque Davis replacing Redman?
See him replacing John Parker Wilson maybe, but not Redman. At least not right away.
Do you think that Mcoy for the Bucs will have a break out season or is he going to tear a groin muscle or something again?
I think this might be the year he stays healthy.
Will Kroy Bierman and Sidbury have break out yr this yr?
If I had to pick one of those two, I'd go with Sidbury.
Which NFC South team has the best receiver corp?
Tough one to answer. If you're going just 1-2-3, I'd say Atlanta. If you're going 1 through 5 or 6, I probably go with Saints.
Shouldn't Beason be you easy #1 defender until he shows he can't return from last years (and his only) injury?
Yeah, I should have included him in that group.
What is Derek Brooks doing nowadays?
Saw him out at Bucs practice from a distance on Wednesday, but didn't get to say hi. Believe he still is GM for the Arena team in Tampa and he also does some national radio.
Any info on Smitty's foot infection?
Supposedly, he's progressing well. But I think they'd be wise to hold him out this Sunday.
Will Mike Williams regain his rookie form this season? I've read he's really rededicated himself after last season.
He definitely seems more focused. I think he might be able to be a solid No. 2 with VJ there.
Is Mike Smith too soft as a coach?
Personally, I don't think so. But I know that perception is out there and he runs the risk of it growing if he doesn't win big this year. Could turn into a situation like Dungy in his final years in Tampa. All right, we're going to call it a wrap on the chat. I've got a few things to do and then need to head out to Raymond James Stadium. Will have observations on Bucs and Falcons on the blog soon after their games end tonight. Thanks for stopping by.
