Chat with Rich Cimini

ESPN New York
  (1:07 PM)

Rich is having a technical trouble or two. He'll be right here.

Rich Cimini
  (1:10 PM)

Sorry about the delay. Let's get started.

Sean (Glenmont, NY)

Rich, with the o-line problems the Jets continue to have, is it fair to say that Coples was a luxury pick that should have been used to address that dire area of need? I'm all for a dominating D, but what good is it when your offense is among the worst in the league?

Rich Cimini
  (1:11 PM)

I don't think a DE was a luxury pick. Whether Coples was the right pick, I'm not sure. But they needed DL help.

westcoastjetsfan (los angeles)

So now that the Jets finally came to their senses and benched Hunter, can Howard be a starting RT; and have you heard who might be available via a trade. Any rumors?

Rich Cimini
  (1:12 PM)

They're definitely looking, but it would be a low to mid level trade -- a guy who could possibly develop into a starter.

Eric (San Diego)

Rich, are there any rumors about tackles available on the trade market? Is Kareem McKenzie worth a look at this point?

Rich Cimini
  (1:13 PM)

They have no interest in Kareem.

Eric (San Diego)

Rich, this feels to me like a 5-win football team? What do you think?

Rich Cimini
  (1:13 PM)

And people say I'm pessimistic? Relax, they're better than 5 wins.

Jimmy (Huntington)

Rich, Did anyone ask Rex why the Jets left themselves so vulnerable at RT this late in the pre-season? Who are they going to trade with for a RT? If,( and that's a big IF) a team is willing to trade a RT....they know they have the Jets by the tail....Jets will have to over pay trade wise for a RT. AHHHHHHH....so frustrating!

Rich Cimini
  (1:15 PM)

Yes, Ryan was asked why they waited until now. He didn't give a good answer. He talked about giving Howard a shot, but that doesn't add up because only recently has started to impress. He had a bad offseason.

Kevin (New York)

Are the Jets looking to trade for Percy Harvin I keep hearing they were in contact with the Vikings

Rich Cimini
  (1:15 PM)

The Jets don't have any cap money. How would they make that deal?

Alex (Anaheim)

How is Santonio progressing?

Rich Cimini
  (1:16 PM)

Holmes is doing better. I still think he may sit against Carolina, but he'll definitely be ready for the opener.

Jake (Gainesville, FL)

Rich, I want your gut feeling on this one, starting RT Week 1 against the Bills... Austin Howard or somebody not currently on the roster?

Rich Cimini
  (1:17 PM)

I'd have to say Howard. Definitely won't be Hunter and odds of them trading for a starting caliber RT are slim.

Eric (San Diego)

Rich, a year from now, are Boomer and Carton interviewing Rex and Tannenbaum, or are they talking to a new head coach and GM?

Rich Cimini
  (1:18 PM)

Frankly, I don't care who they choose to interview.

Steve (Flushing)

After seeing Landry in the preseason do you think he can be effective in pass coverage?

Rich Cimini
  (1:19 PM)

Landry has surprised me. Runs pretty well. Question is, can he stay healthy? Most physical safety they've had since ... Ronnie Lott?

Mugatooo (Positville)

Rich, its beyond irritating now, its obvious the Jets lack playermakers! Joe McKnight is the only other play maker other than Tone, but the coaching staff still decides to stash him as our 3rd RB, behind 2 guys who clearly define the term Vanilla! Rich its abusurd that they dont realize this, what gives? There has to be more to the story than his apparent blocking skills! Sincerly a frustrated Jets fan!

Rich Cimini
  (1:19 PM)

McKnight has talent, but he's been nicked up, he makes mental errors and he's an undisciplined runner.

Danny C (NY)

Who is going to win the competition at the kicker spot?

Rich Cimini
  (1:20 PM)

I'd say Folk.

Nos (OC, NY)

What did Plaxico do last season not deserve another call back this year? Jets need him more NOW than last year!!! What RTs are out there in the market/possible trade?

Rich Cimini
  (1:20 PM)

Plax can't run anymore.

Bryan (CT)

So Wayne is FINALLY gone, what's the back-up plan for (when) Austin Howard is a flop?!

Rich Cimini
  (1:22 PM)

Hunter isn't gone. He's the 6th OLM, according to Rex. Is that like being the 5th Beatle?

Danny Marin (Norwalk Ct)

Hey Rich. What do you think of the possibility of maybe trading for a descent right guard that will help sanchez or even tebow?

Rich Cimini
  (1:23 PM)

Right guard? That's the least of their worries. Brandon Moore is a very good player.

Bobby (Boca Raton, FL)

Are there really any RT battles around the league that might lead to a starting caliber player actually being cut when the rosters are trimmed down? Seems like they would be kept as backups. Or are the Jets just waiting for teams to cut right tackles for cap reasons?

Rich Cimini
  (1:24 PM)

All of the above. Keep an eye on Detroit. Their No. 1 pick, Riley Reiff, is currently backing up. Gotta figure he gets into the lineup soon, replace LT Backus or RT Cherilus.

Bryan (CT)

So the Jets face a far less superior defense this weekend...how many point do you reasonably expect us to put up? I'm hoping for at least a touchdown!

Rich Cimini
  (1:25 PM)

My, how the expectations have fallen.

Dylan (NY)

Hi Rich, I really liked what I saw from Antonio Allen in the second half of that last preseason game, he was all over the place. Do you see him getting any significant playing time in the regular season?

Rich Cimini
  (1:26 PM)

He did play well, but probably limited to teams. Bush working ahead of him in dime package.

Dylan (NY)

Hey Rich, From what I've seen the Jets Running game doesn't look that great. Do you think they have enough to really ground and pound?

Rich Cimini
  (1:27 PM)

Running game showed signs of improvement vs. Giants. Let's see if they can build on that,

Mike (NYC)

Rich, I've been waiting for a chat from you. You really gotta answer my question here. Why on earth are the Jets not considering playing Tebow at Running Back? Not wildcat, running back. They are in desperate need of playmakers and he's a playmaker. No one can tackle him. It makes so much sense at his size. Just don't see why it's not a big topic. He would be such a good running back! Bring it Rich!

Rich Cimini
  (1:27 PM)

Believe me, Tebow will have a role in this offense.

andrew (brooklyn)

you just reported that marcus mcneill worked out with the jets today but didnt he announce his retirement a week ago?

Rich Cimini
  (1:28 PM)

I believe he announced it Aug. 9.

Joe (Eastrutherford nj )

Do you think the jets will make a trade for an RT and a WR

Rich Cimini
  (1:28 PM)

Good chance for a RT, not so sure about a WR.

Oz (CT)

Hi Rich, I get that the Jets can not go after every big name player that comes available. But how about just trying to address some needs. RT seems to be a big need. Whats your take on why Mike T's been so passive this season ? Are they just too tight with the cap ? Is it just that suitable players haven't been available ?

Rich Cimini
  (1:29 PM)

Cap/budget situation.

Matt (White Plains)

Do you think that Jordan White is going to make the team and if so what will his role be?

Rich Cimini
  (1:29 PM)

He's on the bubble. Could make it as a 5th or 6th WR.

Scott (Connecticut)

Rich. How has Coples looked so far. He played pretty well against the Bengal back-ups and looks like he had a solid game against the Giants. I know he has had some practice issues, but does it seem like he may avoid the bust label and actually have some impact?

Rich Cimini
  (1:30 PM)

He has been productive, but would like to see him do more vs. the starters.

brian mansfield (New Providence NJ)

What are your expectations for Bilal Powell this year? Also do you see Austin Howard as a long term RT for us, because after all he has great upside being only 26 and extremely athletic for his size?

Rich Cimini
  (1:30 PM)

He'll be the No. 2 RB and part-time 3rd-down back.

Kunal (Belle Mead, NJ)

Hey Rich, first of all, thanks for the constant updates throughout camp. Makes life at work a lot more bearable. I was wondering what your take is on what the Jets will do about their receiver situation since it looks like they're in the process of fixing this RT mess. Will they start the season with Holmes and Hill, along with Kerley in the slot? Doesn't seem very imposing to me, at least not yet with Kerley and Hill being so raw.

Rich Cimini
  (1:31 PM)

Thanks -- and yes it'll be Holmes, Hill and Kerley.

Anthony Gioffre (Washington Township, NJ)

Rich, Do you see Dustin Keller being the biggest offensive threat the Jets have this season due to the lack of playmakers? Or do you think it is still Santonio Holmes or someone else?

Rich Cimini
  (1:31 PM)

I see a big year for Keller.

Alvaro (Brooklyn, NY)

Do you see a healthy Schilens or Hill being our 'legit' #2 WR?

Rich Cimini
  (1:31 PM)

Hill will be the No. 2. Schilens on the bubble.

Matthew Sigman (New York, NY)

Would you say your writing style is negative or positive?

Rich Cimini
  (1:32 PM)

Neither. Just trying to be objective.

Jason (Hoboken)

What can we expect out of Steven Hill this year?

Rich Cimini
  (1:32 PM)

Far from being a polished WR, but he has a chance to be a vertical threat.

Oz (CT)

Hi Rich, along the lines of Mike T's passiveness. Why do you think he's passed on some veteran depth ( i.e. Braylon at WR, Benson at RB, even Leonhard at safety ) when it appears these guys could come at a low cost/risk ?

Rich Cimini
  (1:33 PM)

Can't rip him for Leonhard; the man was coming off another major injury. Benson is used up. Braylon would've been a good get.

Bill H (Hoboken)

Rich... do you think Revis's comments about the front office not giving Sanchez more weapons more general frustration, or some sour grapes with his contract? Thanks.

Rich Cimini
  (1:34 PM)

Excellent question. I'd say, yes. No love lost between him and the front office.

Tom (NYC)

If you were the Jets would you give a couple 2-3 rd picks for MJD?

Rich Cimini
  (1:35 PM)

No. Makes no sense for give up good picks for a RB close to the downside.

Steiny (NYC)

Rich, give me some props..I called that my boy Howard would start months ago!

Rich Cimini
  (1:36 PM)

He's starting ... this week. It's a fluid situation.

Fred (NY)

With Howard moving in to the starting lineup who takes his spot in the jumbo package?e

Rich Cimini
  (1:37 PM)

Hunter, of course ... the greatest jumbo TE in the history of jumbo TEs, according to Rex.

Bill H (Hoboken)

Rich... when the line had it's issues in 07, they went out and brought in Woody and Faneca. Not so much this year. Cap issues aside, did the Jets perhaps put too much faith in Sparano fixing hunter? Typically, you can't be successful if you can't control the line of scrimmage.

Rich Cimini
  (1:37 PM)

Great point. Answer is yes, too much faith in Sparano.

Rich Cimini
  (1:38 PM)

Sorry, guys, but it's a busy day and I have to run. Appreciate the questions. Great stuff, as always. We'll talk next week. Rich
