Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (2:59 PM)

Watney takes it, Sergio blows it, Poulter and Colsaerts round out the Euro Ryder Cup Team, and Tiger has another crappy weekend... Here comes the fastest hour in golf!! C'Mon!!!!

David (Orlando,Fl) [via mobile]

Well another eventful weekend for TW, just when you think hes going to be consistently competing for titles you have the back and Sundays round. Michael im one of Tigers biggest fans but should even I start accepting that this is the new norm?

Michael Collins
  (3:01 PM)

My friend I was getting KILLED on here last year when I said Tiger is now playing like a regular tour pro. Yes he's still got more wins than anyone else, but he holds himself to a higher standard and WE DO TOO.

Chuck (Cold Spring Harbor)

So what is the verdict of Bethpage as a non-major (yet playoff) PGA Tour stop? Beginning of the week had a lots of raves...end of the week, not so much.

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

Well the greens got away from them on the weekend. Got WAY too fast for where they were putting the hole locations. The course itself was great but the next time (if) they go back they're gonna have to soften the greens just a little more.

Alex (Anaheim)

Am I crazy, or are most hockey players obsessed with golf?

Michael Collins
  (3:04 PM)

You're nuts! Just kidding. There are a lot of hockey players that are into golf. The weight transfer of a swing and a slapshot is very similar and most hockey players can BOMB it.

Jeff (Hoboken)

Michael, it's hard to question a guy after 16 years of gutting out rounds, but it seemed like Tiger quit a little bit after his double bogey at #12 yesterday. Everyone has tough days, but I can't remember him mailing in the last 6 holes like that...

Michael Collins
  (3:07 PM)

First time I ever saw it in person was at Quail Hollow in Charlotte a few years ago, he three jacked the par 5 15th and missed a one handed tap in. Broke my heart to see him quit. He ain't supposed to EVER quit. But he's human just like us and everyone else.

Maurice Shaw (Houston, TX)

Mike,What's up with Tiger Woods, why is he struggling on the weekends?

Keith (Milwaukee)

If Tiger keeps playing like this on Sundays he is going to have to switch from red to pink shirts...what do you see is his issue on weekend play?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

I truly believe it is now a mental problem. There are only so many excuses you can make every weekend until you have to realize that something is mentally wrong going into Saturday's and then again on Sunday's.

Maurice (Houston, TX)

Are you attending this years Ryder Cup? If so are you available to tee it up?

Michael Collins
  (3:09 PM)

I will be attending, and if you promise not to tell my boss... haha

Matt (Glasgow, Scotland)

Struggling to work out what has happened to Woods this year. Do you reckon his problems are swing issues, putting, or as Faldo said, more of a mental block? For someone so talented its hard to imagine his swing going so wrong this far into his work with Foley.

Michael Collins
  (3:10 PM)

It ain't Foley and his work with Tiger's swing. It's mental.

Josh (DE)

Mahan, Stricker, Sneds, DJ, Fowler, Furyk, BVP, Watney... I could buy a case for any 4 of them. How tough a decision is this going to be for DLIII?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

REALLY tough, and check out how Bud Cauley's been playing the past month too! The Euro Team is very passionate, so I may want a very understated team cause that would drive the emotional team nuts. I doubt it but it could be an excuse!?!

Andrew (WI)

I think Phil might be the only golfer in history who treats a $10 million series of tournaments as silly season. New putting grip just out of nowhere? I'm sure DLIII is thrilled about this.

Michael Collins
  (3:13 PM)

The good news is Phil is doing it so he will be ready for the Ryder Cup... Playoffs as practice, cracks me up.

Nate (Los Angeles)

Now that Colsaerts is on the team, Davis has to take D. Johnson and pair the bombers against each other (at least in doubles). Both hit a MONSTER baby draw off the tee---must see TV.

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

that's even better than if Quiros would've made the European team!

Joe (In the air)

Mike,Have you ever caddied in the Ryder Cup, and would you rather caddie or cover the event?

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

Never caddied it, and covered my first one in four years ago in KY. Amazing experience, but of course I would caddie it in a heartbeat if I had my choice!!

Max (San Francisco)

Mike, what did you think of Sergio's demeanor the last couple of weeks? Seems like a huge change. Never saw him lose his cool when hit a bad shot. He blew it yesterday but you could see he was focused and trying and at the end -- no woe is me stuff. If he keeps this up, do you think he'll be a big player in the majors next year?

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

I'm impressed by his commitment to having more fun on the golf course. And he's sticking to his guns, even when it goes a little bad. And that is the hardest part, when it's not going well. I think to because it was in NY and that crowd would be merciless if they saw him being "baby like". But As far as majors go, I still don't see him winning a major.

Nate (Los Angeles)

Michael, most underrated golfer in the world right now is ....... ? (I'll go with my new favorite player, Nicolas Colsaerts). Snedeker and F. Molinari would be nice choices as well.

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

Don't know if I'd say Colsaerts. He's 8th on the Euro Tour Race to Dubai and won the Volvo Match Play earlier this year.I'll say Peter Hanson may be even less known then Colsaerts

Andrew (WI)

Don't get why everyone is complaining about Dufner and then Sergio skipping. To get 123 of 125 to show up (never saw who the other one was) to show up in week 1 and 99 to show up in week 2 is good considering the packed schedule.

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

Well my big thing is, it would make more sense to have a week off after Deutsche Bank since it ends on a Monday, but the Ryder Cup always throws a monkey wrench in that idea. And the way to make guys play all four events is to make whoever skips an event go to the back of the line. But it's hard to tell a guy like Sergio who played his way in that he can't rest.

Matt (Houston)

how much time do players spend on the flexibility? even bigger guys like Kevin Stadler make incredible turns.

Michael Collins
  (3:29 PM)

you'd be amazed at the guys that go in the fitness trailer in the mornings before they go play. And then again after the round to cool down. It's one of those behind the scenes things that many people don't realize these guys do to stay on top.

Nate (Los Angeles)

I realize he is a stud and well-liked by the other guys on the U.S. team, but don't you have to pass over Mahan this time around given the choke two year ago?

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

I think the opposite, a chance for redemption... you know how hard he's gonna grind?! He'll be tough to beat heads up in match play.

Keith H (Seattle)

As far as I'm concerned, the FedEx Cup is a glorified cash grab. The story of the weekend was Lydia Ko, who made history.

Michael Collins
  (3:34 PM)

15 years old!! But to be honest with you, I'm torn. Does that mean she's that good along with a youngster like Lexi Thompson, or the "veterans" with experience just aren't that good? Scary question.

Nelson (DE)

If a player takes a week (or more) off, then how often (if at all) does his regular caddie still show up at an event in case another player needs a sub for a week?

Michael Collins
  (3:34 PM)

Rarely, most weeks off are planned and the caddie also will enjoy time at home.

Mike (UK)

What's TPC Boston like as a venue for the playoffs? I seem to remember there being pretty low scores in the past at this event

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

well last year -15 won but there were only 4 guys that had all four rounds in the 60's. and -9 was a tie for 10th. It's a BIG course. par 71 just over 7,200 yards. I like it for the Playoffs

Joe (Philly)

DL3 has got his work cut out for him. It used to be automatic Tiger and Phil playing all 5 matches. Can you really bank on them for that now

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

Tiger yes. Phil... no

Jeff (Hoboken)

Do you think Tiger will ever switch back to the Scotty Cameron putter? Or did Nike make him switch in exchange for keeping him under contract?

Michael Collins
  (3:39 PM)

As far as I know, he can switch back to the Cameron whenever he wants, but I bet there are some nice "bonus incentives" built in when he uses the Nike putter.

Rick (Ottawa)

I was following Tiger on Sunday for the first time and I'm wondering if he's always looked like that. I think he smiled once and he looked like he really didn't want to be there.

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

I really get disappointed seeing that too.

Mike (New Orleans)

Going to Augusta next year, what's a good place to eat?

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

Last year was my first trip and I left the course every night around 9 pm, then had to be back at 6 am. Never went out for dinner once. It's a tough work week.

Patrick (On the road)

Is Watney in? If so, who's out? Fowler, Furyk, or someone else?

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

Let me just say I am GLAD I'm not the captain cause someone who's worthy is gonna get left out.If it's me I take Watney, Dustin, Mahan, and Stricker

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

maybe switch out Fowler for Stricker

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

or Furyk

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

Should my middle name be "fence"?! haha

JQ (PA)

Davis Love should just tell the Ryder Cup hopefuls "The 4 of you that finish best this week are on the team". I know it won't happen, but how exciting would that be? All of them would have a shot to play their way in, all us fans would know exactly who's in, and there wouldn't really be room to complain if someone is not on the team.

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

He may have already said that, and believe me, they're all gonna play like it.

Billy Idol (CA)

I say Watney wins the Fed Ex Cup - I like him at the Tour Champ...

Michael Collins
  (3:48 PM)

I agree. I think he's gonna play really well in Atlanta. And I think he contends this week too!

TyWebb (Bushwood)

Ryder Cup predictions? USA has it's hands full don't you think??

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

Can't lie, the Euro Team is gonna be tough. Only one Ryder Cup rookie (Colsaerts) on the team. And for some reason they play really good "team" golf.

John (Ireland)

Tiger paired with Stricker again this year? I'm thinking Mahan might be a great pairing for him too

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

They play ALOT of practice rounds together and both Mahan and Tiger are coached by Foley

Jeff (Hoboken)

Ty Webb, I'm nervous for the Ryder Cup too. Donald and Garcia love Medinah. And McDowell and Poulter become possessed in the team format.

Billy Idol (CA)

Tiger and Phil should sit out of Cup - they don't like it anyways. Give them a break from it.

bill (tacoma)

How far would you realistically expect Sergio to drop in the Fedex cup race with his week off? I know a lot of factors go into it, but is he still a lock for East Lake in your opinion with a half-way decent BMW?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

I think he's still a lock for East Lake but now he may HAVE to play well at BMW depending on what happens.

James (St. Louis)

Who would you pair Dufner up with in the Ryder Cup?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

Kuchar or Bubba

Fred (Chicago)

Am I the only one who has a problem with the Fed Ex Cup format? Tiger was the best player on tour for eight months, but the Fed Ex Cup basically wipes that away because Watney had one good week? Could you even make the justification that Watney has had one of the top 30 seasons on the PGA Tour? Probably not, he had one good tournament and now he is #1, sorry but that is ridiculous.

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

It's called the Playoffs for a reason, in every other sport the team that has the best regular season doesn't always win in the playoffs, and if Tiger has a couple good weeks he can still win.

Nick (Massachusetts)

Any idea why Spencer Levin didn't play last week? Any anyone besides Sergio skipping this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

No, and so far Sergio was the only one not playing. But the field list hasn't been updated today, I just checked.

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

Aaron Baddaley just sent me a message. He says Bethpage Black SHOULD be kept in the rotation for Barclay's

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

Baddeley, cause when I rush I spell terribly!! Sorry dude!!

Ed (Long Island)

You have officially gone to the spoiled reporter side!!!!! To say Augusta is a tough work week - following the best players on one of probably top 3 courses in the world - and calling that a tough work week...SOFT!!!!!!!!! Maybe you should ask for that week off if it's so tough!!!!!!!

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Maybe you should sit in the media center for 13 hours a day doing a live chat! I ain't out walking the course, so be careful saying my grass is greener than your grass!! I'm there but I'm stuck inside. Like going to a steak house and watching people eat.

Ed (Long Island)

Think caddies are getting nervous with Sergio picking up a caddy as he goes and perfroming so well? He noted it got him back to being a feel player, and domino effect here to lessen dependence on caddy and just go with gut feel?

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

He proved when it's going good, you don't need a caddie. But he also proved that when it goes bad, having a pro caddie on your bag matters! I believe it cost him a win this past week. And his "caddie" (Wayne) is a good friend but not a pro caddie.

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

Hot Dog!! That went REALLY fast! Same time next week?! Cool! And thanks to Aaron Baddeley for jumping on too even though it was stealthy!ESPNCaddie@gmail.comor on Twitter @ESPNCaddie.Stay in touch. Thanks all.MC
