Chat with Wally Matthews

Wallace Matthews
  (11:56 AM)

What's up creatures? Sorry. Channelled Swisher there for a moment. I'll be back to normal shortly and we'll get this party started

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What is the Absolute Worst Trade that the Yankees Made since you Covered the Yankees?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:00 PM)

well, since I've only covered them full time for three seasons, I'd have to say Montero for Pineda. But that one could turn around

briny aka drey lawrence ma [via mobile]

do u think the new york yankees will win the world series

Wallace Matthews
  (12:02 PM)

I'd have a better chance of picking today's Pick Six at Saratgoa than predicting what will happen a month from now but I will say that if everyone gets healthy and performs as expected, they have a very good chance. But that is a very big IF

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What Yankees Minor League Players will Join the New York Yankees when the Roster Expands to 40 on Saturday?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:02 PM)

I would expect them to add a third catcher, a few reserve outfielders, and with Tex injured, a reserve infielder or two. and of course, a few pitchers. You want names, too?

Anthony Gioffre (Washington Township, NJ)

Wally, David Phelps has been solid for the Yankees this season. Do you see him playing the Ramiro Mendoza role if and when Andy Pettitte returns to the rotation?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:03 PM)

Yes. In fact, Girardi has invoked Ramiro when speaking of Phelps. But the questionis, will Pettitte return to the rotation this season? It seems his recpovery has been slower than expected, even if Girardi won;t acknowledge it yet, although he came pretty close this morning

David (Jupiter FL)

Any idea who will be included in the September call ups? Any chance we will see Cervelli?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:04 PM)

they will certainly call up a third catcher and I would be surprised if it isn;t Cervelli. But it oculd be Molina or even Romine, although his playing time has been limited this season due to back issues

David (CT)

Do you think the Yankees will make any more moves between Friday, for starting pitching like maybe getting Roy Oswalt or Kevin Millwood, or Erik Bedard or Shawn Marcum? Also do you think the Yankees might try to get bench player like Ty Wigginton, Chone Figgins or even Alfonso Soriano and or anybody else for the bullpen between now and Friday?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:05 PM)

I woul dbe surprised if they make any sort of a move of that caliber between now and friday, although anything is possible. Why nott add A.J. Burnett to your want list?

CB (California)

Hi and great job. Love following you. Can you tell me why the Yankees chose Pearce over McGehee? I realize McGehee will back Saturday but I just don't get it. I think McGehee has done a solid job when he's played. Why go with a journeyman player like Pearce? It's driving me crazy trying to figure out the Yankees rationale on this. I won't even go into Girardi batting him clean-up.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:07 PM)

Thanks very much. You raise an excellent question and one that I and some of the other beat guys were discussing this morning. It looks as if the Yankees have seen what they needed to see out of mcGehee and want to get a look at what Pearce can offer them. And yeah, batting him cleanup was a head-scratcher. I was off yesterday or i certainly would have asked the mgr that question.

Alex (Anaheim)

Will Pettitte be pitching in the minor league playoffs once again?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:08 PM)

More likely, Pettitte will do his rehab in the major leagues, either in simulated games or perhaps starting for 5 innings or so and then giving way to maybe a Derek Lowe or one of the callups. But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves here. it's august 29 and pettitte still hasn;t even thrown off a mound yet

Dom (NY)

Cashman's comments about Colon and Melky may have been honest but in hindsight he'd probably be better off not commenting on other teams players. Also I'm sure MLB has the resources to see what players are trending well over the norm and could have them tested. Your thoughts?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:09 PM)

Cashman often says things he might be better off not saying, which is one of the reasons I love covering him. MLB has plenty of resources to test but sometimes I wonder how much they really want to know, esp with the commissioner having declared the Steroid Era over.

Scott (NJ)

Earlier this year it looked like Cano and Grandison would be retained and Swisher would not be resigned. Could Grandison also not be resigned? He hits a lot of solo homers but those strikeouts , batting avg and lack of productive outs are troubling.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:13 PM)

Funny, I have addressed this recently in a column because it has occurred to me that re-signing Curtis may not be as much of a no-brainer as it may have looked, for all of the reasons you mention. I could see a scenario where neither Swish nor Grandy come back, as well as one in which Swish is re-signed, the Yankees pick up Grandy's $13M option for next year but let him go before 2014. One thing I am sure of, today anyway, is that they will retain Cano either through contract extension or as FA

Fred (Tampa)

Thanks for chatting Wally. What player was lopped off the roster to make room for Pearce? Was he actually sent down to get a few AB/innings or will he hang around the South Bronx until rosters expand?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:15 PM)

Casey McGehee was optioned to make room for him on the 25 and Brandon Laird was DFA to clear room on the 40. Since he's playing today, I'm assuming Pearce is here for the duration

Andy Hawkins (South Bronx)

What is your favorite John Sterling home run call?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:16 PM)

thankfully, I'm at the game most nights and don;t get to hear them, but I was kind of partial to Bern Baby Bern

Ricky Roma (New York)

Wally,Love your stuff!!!! One question: Who will the Yankees get for the playoff push? These guys are falling apart and need some reinforcements. Is Cashman going to do anything, or is he just a company man? Thanks! Ricky

Wallace Matthews
  (12:18 PM)

Thanks, Ricky. Loved your work on the Glengarry deal. Cashman will do what he is able to do. it's not like saviors suddenly fall from the trees in late august. Yes, some of the older guys appear tired and this was always the pitfall of assembling a team of superstars signed to longterm contracts. Unless something drastic happnes, the Yankees are going to have to go to war with the (aging) army they've got

Chris (Ma)

We hear what a fine Job Kevin Long did with Grandison hitting lefty's but Jeter turned it around with help from Dembo, Tex has regressed as a Yankee, so has Martin. The amount of K's and the lack of situational hitting is disturbing for such a veteran group, no?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:20 PM)

Yeah, it is disturbing but I tend not to blame a hitting coach for guys making bad decisions in a game situation. I'm not blaming KLong for Tex' insistence on hitting into the shift -- besides, he has improved as the season has gone on -- or Martin's bad year. In fact, Martin has taken responsiibily for that himself

Andy (Dayton)

Hi Wally, thanks for all the great work! Any additional information on Teixeira aside from the vague 1-2 weeks?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:21 PM)

Unfortunately no. and with rosters expanding, it's tough to gauge how badly a guys really hurt since there's no reason to put him on the DL. My guess is Tex sits out maybe through the weekend and aims for the series with Tampa starting on Monday

Rob (Vegas)

Obviously Mike Trout has been amazing, but the Angels still are not a good team. Why hasn't Cano gotten more press about possible MVP?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:24 PM)

Good question. he and jeter both deserve consideration -- Im a big proponent of the word "value" in the MVP award and hate that it has become more of a "best numbers" award -- but there is a prevailing feeling that no one individual is indispensable to the Yankees and their continuing to win despite the loss of Mariano, Pineda, Gardner, and for varying periods, Pettitte, Robertson, Sabathia, A-Rod and Tex kind of lends credence to it, doesn;t it?

Jeremy (Waltham)

what motivated girardi to finally switch swisher and granderson in the lineup? seemed to be an obvious move that should have been done earlier in the season (move the obp guy up and drop the strikeout machine)

Wallace Matthews
  (12:25 PM)

Swisher's OBP and Grandy's power #s coupled with his propensity for making non-productive outs, i.e. Ks. Yes, obvious move, one I had written about many times. Sometimes I think Girardi is just stubborn

brad (nj)

Any chance the yankees claim Joe Mauer? I know the answer is no, but someone will ask it so this gives you the chance to get it out of the way

Wallace Matthews
  (12:25 PM)

OK. No. Thanks for the opportunity!

Dave (Toronto)

So Curtis Granderson, he of 33 home runs and last night's clean up hitter, what's his name with zero home runs as a Yankee? What gives with Girardi???

Wallace Matthews
  (12:26 PM)

Wish I knew. Wasn;t here last night, would have loved to hear his answer. probably would have had something to do with stacking lefties in the middle of the order or some such nonsense

Luke (CA)

Did you untuck your shirt after last nights win too?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:26 PM)

I'm at the age where I never tuck it in to begin with

Contract the Yankees (Not New York)

How can you sleep at night covering the most arrogant, undeserving, vile organization in all of sports? Not a single thing that team "accomplishes" has any merit whatsoever

Wallace Matthews
  (12:27 PM)

I sleep quite well. It's a tough job covering all of that

JohnR (Bergenfield)

Wally,I'm beginning to suspect that Soriano is being overused. Am I missing something?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:28 PM)

well, he is the closer and is expected to work whenver a save situation arises. That being said, Girardi said he wasn;t sure if sori would be available today

Adam (NY)

Is it fair to say the "elephant in the room" this season is that Chris Stewart might be a better player than Russel Martin?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:29 PM)

Nah. I;m not sure he is anyway. Martins BA is terrible, but for a guy who has the rep of being a great defensive catcher, Stew allows a lot of PBs. Seven at last count. Not sure all th epitchers love throwing to him

JohnR (Bergenfield)

It seems to me that Ichiro is going for the downs on 2 outs and no one on. I called his first shot against Beckett last week. How enamored is he with the right field porch at YS?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:29 PM)

wouldn;t you be? I';m thinkig of batting lefty ion the next media game. Couldn;t be any worse

Wallace Matthews
  (12:30 PM)

Thanks, guys. Gotta run. Ballgame to cover. we;ll do it again next wednesday from Tampa
