Hey everybody...good afternoon...I just had something come up that I must take care of...The phone call won't take long so I'm asking for your patience and I'll be back on at 3:15...Again, sorry about this but I'll be right back and we'll take the chat into overtime today as well. Thanks..Guru out and be right back.
Thanks for your patience everyone...I had a little accident today with a septic line and let's just say it turned out to be a messy project..lol...let's get the questions now.
How's this for a preliminary lineup? 5, 10, 11, 18, 48. I particularly like the picks of the 11, 18 and 48 going into Richmond as well. I managed a 167 despite Keselowski's 30th place finish last week.Or am I better off downgrading the 5 or 11 in favor of someone like the 9 and then I can take the 22 with my last pick?
You need to upgrade the 10 some how Zach...Now, my pre-race rankings have the 5 and the 12 and you can read why on my preview that should already be posted..So, I would give serious consideration to those guys...I'm not a huge fan of the 18 at Atlanta either. He'll be good but not as stout as Hamlin...As for the 22 he's a major question mark in my mind at Atlanta and I think Regan Smith might be the best floor pick this week.
Who do think will win the NRA American Warrior 300 & the Advocare 500 at Atlanta?
I thinking Denny Hamlin or Ricky Stenhouse on Saturday night and Kahne is my top pick Sunday followed by Hamlin.
Guys like Kasey Kahne and Carl Edwards have been the ultimate examples of a "feast or famine" type guy at Atlanta. Either they finish in the Top 10 or outside the Top 30 (assumingly due to a wreck or mechnical issue); there are literally no finishes in between for either driver. How do you treat guys like this for fantasy?
You treat them carefully...but look at how Kahne ran at Kansas and Kentucky...both were wore out 1.5-mile tracks like Atlanta..So I really like him this week...Carl will be good...but I don't think that team has found all the speed they need to run up front.
Prior to 2012, Who was the Last Female Driver to Race in a Sprint Cup Series Race at Atlanta?
Sorry man...not a clue...I'm going to guess maybe Shauna Robinson
Who are your top five for this weekend? And who would be a good couple of lower priced drivers?
I'm going to put up my top-30 right after this answer so you'll have my top-5 and more...as for lower priced drivers Regan Smith should be solid..If he's not a start and park then Casey Mears will bring you an 18th-20th place finish at a nice price..Sam Hornish,Jr. is another possible but I have some questions about him going in...Believe it or not, Juan Pablo Montoya has scored more points than any other driver in the last four races at Atlanta.
Here's the my pre-race top-30....1.Kasey Kahne2.Denny Hamlin3.Jimmie Johnson4.Dale Earnhardt, Jr.5.Brad Keselowski6.Jeff Gordon7.Matt Kenseth8.Tony Stewart9.Carl Edwards10.Martin Truex, Jr.11.Kyle Busch12.Greg Biffle13.Marcos Ambrose14.Clint Bowyer15.Ryan Newman16.Kevin Harvick17.Paul Menard18.Mark Martin19.Juan Pablo Montoya20.Jeff Burton21.Joey Logano22.Regan Smith23.Jamie McMurray24.Sam Hornish, Jr.25.Casey Mears26.Aric Almirola27.Trevor Bayne28.Bobby Labonte29.Kurt Busch30.David Gilliland
Hell-o Mark, I took a "Pants Down Spanking" @ Bristol! I NEED HELP ! 17 or 99? 16 or 14? I've got Vickers and can fanagle a trade for Martin, BUT would the 9 be a better pick? ( I should never have traded him in last week) Thanks , Bill
You and me both got whipped at Bristol...I didn't help a lot of folks on the 9 because I basically recommended against and Marcos made me eat crow pie...I like the 17 over the 99 and Tony over "The Bif"..There's only two races left in the segment so you can throw caution to the wind...what if you had Kahne and Hamlin as your top two and then worked from there..I bet you could come up with a pretty interesting team.
Mark, We will be @ Chicagoland! I'd like to shake your hand if I make my way up to the Pressbox. Any chance? Thanks, Bill
I'd love to do that Bill, I believe Chicago is the only Chase race I'll miss this year. I'm hosting the kids from my church in a weekend camp out on my property.
Mark, hope you're doing well today. Did alright at Bristol last weekend with the MWR cars coming through and the 99 almost. This week my prelim is 48-55-56-21. However, only have 2 starts left with the 55 and 5 left with the 5 who is one of my backups. Should I make the switch? 5 for 55?Also, Mark my Grandpa Brown passed away yesterday so I was wondering if everyone could just say a prayer for him and the rest of my family, especially my Mom and her siblings. He can now get to see my Grandma in heaven. Thank you.
Nick..glad you mentioned Trevor Bayne..I should have added him in my answer to Shannon about possible low budget drivers who could score pretty big..At 13.2 that's tempting to put four big guns with him and he was top-10 at Vegas..I would trade out the 55 and 5..And I am sorry to hear about your grandfather...we're all family here so we'll definitely try to lift you and your family up...This circle of life thing sometimes it really stinks.
If Edwards does not make the chase, will he run additional NNS races or is there more lead time needed to set that up? How do you think Stenhouse will do next year in Cup racing. I understand he will be in the 6 as opposed to the 17, not that it matters...True?
He might run a few more Nationwide races Karl, but if he misses the Chase RFR will be concentraing on his Cup team and nothing else, trying to find what he needs to be competitive.
Hey, Guru! Just a quick Wild-Card question...does KB hold on to the second spot or does Carl Edwards win one of the final two races to jump into the spot? Seems like Richmond is Kyle's race to lose...so where does Cousin Carl pick up that much-needed win? Thanks!
If everybody top-20 in the points following Kasey has one win..it's goes to the guy highest in the standings..With Kahne 11th and Edwards currently 12th with Busch 13th...So,yes if Carl wins this weekend he'll be in line to get the wild card if no other one win driver takes Richmond and ends with two victories.
Regardless of qualifying position is Mark Martin too much of a risk due to previous engine issues on the tri-ovals this season?
That does give me a little pause for concern Ryan..but I think they have solved those issues..Everyone in that $$ area has a lot of risk
Hut..hut..oh not a quarterback call lol..2,5,and 16 are solid...43 is not...
Hi Mark. How will jr. fare in the chase?
I think he's someone that can finish top-5 in the Chase..HMS equipment is very, very solid and that will keep him in the hunt if he keeps his nose clean as he's done most of the season.
Who do you see making a jump and finishing with one of the wild card spots?
I think Gordon and Busch are the two most likely drivers to do it..remember Gordon is the defending winner of the Advocare 500.
What is your Top 30 in the NRA American Warrior 300?
I don't do that for the Nationwide Series Sorry.
Who was the Last Woman to Race in a Nationwide Series Race at Atlanta Prior to 2012?
Maybe Patti Moise.
How do you think that Danica Patrick will do in Atlanta in Both Races?
She should be top-15 or so Saturday and 25th to 30th on Sunday.
Do you have Bayne rated low because of performance or because he doesn't seem to finish many races?
Zippy his record at Atlanta in Nationwide Series is not so hot and he's had issues finishing up races this year. The potential for a top-10 is there given that he finished ninth at Vegas....but inconsistentcy mixed with this being first Cup race at Atlanta caused me to drop him that lowe.
What do you think of this lineup: 88,48,55,31&42?
Intersting line-up Jill no real "slam dunks", but no "bow-wows either.
Guess who???!!! Biffle. What do you think about the Biff's chances to close strong and bring home the points title? I wouldn't trade a case of frozen otter pops, a mustard dispenser, a sack of frozen burritos, an ice cube tray, a large black serving spoon, a gigantic turkey leg, a large bowl of corn, or a Prince greatest hits CD to be anywhere other than the #1 spot like Biffle! I'm sure you're at least somewhat familiar with the ole saying.... Good luck! Smile.
Biffle will begin the Chase ranked no worse than second so he's in really great shape to make the Chase more intersting...Biffle will be in it to win it no doubt about that and with five races on 1.5 mile tracks that plays to his strength too.
Who do you see making a jump and finishing with one of the wild card spots?
I see it being Gordon or Busch.
Hey Guru! It would just make my season if the #99 team pulled a rabbit out of their helmet and won this race, but they just can't seem to put a race together - do you think Carl's goose is cooked when it comes to the chase?
Joanie, when you have that much talent and that kind of team you always have a chance..Carl can win at Atlanta we know that, but something about this team right now just doesn't give you a super good feeling they can win. Decent and top-10 yes, top-5 and great just doesn't seem to be there right now.
Mark, 99 and 21 or 18 and 22or21 to go with the 48,5,24Thanks
Could you afford to go 11 and 21? That might be the play.
If you had to choose two drivers from Almirola, Bayne, Hornish, Mears, and Labonte which two would you take. I would look at the ratinf in your story but it isn't posted yet.
I guess that would be Hornish and Mears based on my rankings.
Good afternoon goobe...I mean guru....lol....thanks for the advice last week about dropping denny and Jimmie and picking up Clint and brad.....worked out great....lol....anyway I can forgive....just wondering what the weather forecast is for the weekend and what your initial team looks like....I guess I need to bite the bullet and get jimmie and denny back....have a great day bud (p.s. do u think the sewage problem may be karma for giving some bad advice last week?....im just saying....lol)
You know the old saying...sometimes you eat the bear...and sometimes the bear eats you...that was me at Bristol...I guess I had it coming since I was going pretty well advice-wise for three weeks in a row...Weather is question mark with the hurricane turning a little west when it goes north but if it turns a little the other way we could be in trouble ..so hard to tell...As for my little problem...a word to the wise..if you build a house and leave the clean out pipe above ground you really ought to pay attention not to hit it really hard and rupture something under the ground...just saying...lol
Guru, it seems like Slammin' Sam always had trouble at the higher-banked tracks when he ran Cup a couple years ago - do you think running the NNW has helped him smooth this out, or he is he still "buyer beware" at tracks over 18 degrees?
I think Hornish is a vastly improved driver, but when you've had his results at Atlanta then I'll want to see something in practice and qualifying to really see if he's beginning to get over the hump...
Im predecting that Ryan Newman will not make the chase and subsequently he will be out of the 39, replaced by a resurging Kurt Busch who instantly makes that car a championship threat next year...what say you Guru??
I say there's a lot of people out there, not me however, who would surely like a little bit of what you've been smoking!
Mark, I joined you in getting thrashed at Bristol. This week my prelim lineup choices are: 5 and 11 whith either 48, 55, 22 or 88, 18, 21. Thoughts?
48 and 88 are close to a wash...I see 18 out running 55..and the 21 has as much upside as the 22.
I'm thinking 48, 5, 11, 24 and 21....say a Hail Mary for me bud
If the 21 comes through you could be in good shape Kevin...
Any idea what's going on with Stewart? He can look like he's out to lunch for three weeks and then blow everyone away the fourth week.
They have been maddeningly inconsistent at times for sure...but he's dangerous everytime he takes the green flag...anywhere.
Hey Guru, Do you rate Rowdy's chances of making the Chase better than Rowdy seems to do?
I see him going into Richmond needing to win and that's a place he could get it done. I'd be surprised if it happened at Atlanta.
After getting destroyed last week by making the seeming logical trade of the 48 for the 2, is there any track left other than Dega that you might be able to make a case for benching the 48?
No, and I won't make that mistake again..Dover has been a pretty tough track on Jimmie...but no real weak tracks coming up.
Guru, since RCR is winless and tanking like EGR, do you expect Harvick to dump out of the top 10 and miss the Chase?
No, Harvick is 37 points ahead of 11th place Kasey Kahne...He'll squeek in.
With Fantasy NASCAR how do you forecast Stewart threating to run over #17 every chance he gets? Could that knock Matt way down in the standings?
First, Vernie it's not going to happen at Atlanta because it's too fast and it's too soon after their incident to pass it off as an "accident"..This kind of payback is better chilled awaiting Martinsville..or maybe Richmond next week...Once in the Chase both have too much to lose to mess with each other too much.
Guru, do you think #88 used it all their stuff just making it into the chase and now Dale's tank is dry and he will probably limp home 12th-10th in final points?
No, I don't see that happening. Junior has been good on the 1.5-mile tracks this year and that size track hosts five of the ten races that make up the Chase.
With Kenseth in the #20 as ESPN is reporting, how do you see Matt communicating and sharing information with Rowdy and Denny?
From what everyone says over at Roush, Kenseth has been a strong teammate and gives good feedback. He'll really help the 11 and 18 next year I do believe.
Guru, in your opinion, what is the best Sprint Cup race to attend? And, condolences to Nick and Family. Also - I think I might have been tail-gating next to Ricky from Yuba City at Bristol, LOL. As always, thanks.
I thought the Bristol night race was pretty sporty..I really like Richmond..Martinsville is one of my personal favorites..Like Texas and Charlotte as well...Atlanta always has good races.
Again, sorry for the delay today everybody. I certainly appreciate your patience...Our chat Sunday will take place in the afternoon at 4:00 eastern so please join me..Until then have a great week...Sad to say but must "The Guru has left the building"!
