August 30, 2:00 PM ET
Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (1:59 PM)

What a week. I saw Tony Stewart driving a tank, shared a tight rope with the Flying Nik Wallenda and now I get to chat with you. What else could an ESPN sportswriter want? Fire away.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What will be the Backup Sponsor for Danica Patrick Besides GoDaddy.com in the Sprint Cup Series in 2013?

David Newton
  (2:00 PM)

Glad to see you back on the pole. Don't think there will be a split of sponsors for Danica.

Jake (Rochester, NY)

Is there any place where we coould acually see NASCAR's rules in print?

David Newton
  (2:01 PM)

Tony Stewart asked the same thing. I've got a copy of the rulebook in my briefcase. It's about a quarter of an inch, which is three-quarters of an inch thicker than it used to be. You might find it online. There are rules.

Griffin (Delaware)

Dave that was by far the coolest race I have ever been to. I suggest everyone once in their life should make it to the Bristol Night race. And while I am not a big Danica fan, I think she earned a lot of respect out there. She drove really well on tough track. Give her a year or two in Cup and people will be talking about her in the Chase.

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

Can't agree with you more on both points -- except for the part about Danica in the Chase. That might be a reach. Glad you had a great time, though.

Dan (NC)

Still think your BFF Logano will make the Chase?

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

Funny guy. I don't. When he didn't win the second Pocono I put that one on the backburner. I have been pushing Gordon here lately.

Claudia (Western NY)

These "Carl Edwards to Penske" rumors seem to have appeared out of nowhere. What's the scoop? Is Carl so unhappy with how his current season has gone, that he's looking elsewhere?

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

Edwards isn't going anywhere. This should explain it all. http://es.pn/Tzrlmx

Mike (SC)

Everybody needs to realize that Kyle and Logano are not superior NW drivers. It's the #18 JGR car that is superior to all other NW cars.

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

There may be something to that. Kyle was amazing in that car and hasn't done anything in his own car. Joey has been amazing in that 18 this year. That said, I don't believe any driver you stuck in that car would win races.

Fred (TX)

I thought Kyle and Kurt were going to win all of the NW races according to Kyle.

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

Yeah, didn't quite work out that way.

Ross (FL)

How far into the weekend until Kyle takes his frustration out and wrecks another driver? I think well before Sunday.

David Newton
  (2:05 PM)

Won't happen.

Jim (GA)

Don't you think that Kyle is taking on too much? Trying to run his NW team, plus run trucks, plus run NW, plus try to make the Chase.

David Newton
  (2:06 PM)

Not really. Brad Keselowski runs a truck team, runs some NW and a full Cup schedule and he's doing just fine. Kyle's schedule actually has been lighter this year without trucks until this weekend and partial NW.

Bill K. Cunningham (Miami)

If anyone sees my brother Ross, please have him contact me at https://twitter.com/BillKCunningham asap. Thanks if you post this. Newton. You're my favorite!! GO JR!!!!

Jim (GA)

Sure was sad to hear so many drivers complaining about the Bristol track when the fans loved the racing.

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

I didn't hear that many complaints. Busch and Harvick were somewhat outspoken, but overall most thought the race was pretty good.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What Sprint Cup Series Rookies do you think will win the Most Races in 2013?

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

How do you split up zero?

Kevin (Nevada)

If teammates are 1-2 during the closing laps of either of these next 2 races, will the teammate locked in to the chase allow the teammate on the wildcard bubble to win?

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

This has come up before and everyone insists there are no team orders. Hard to imagine Hamlin letting Busch win at Richmond since Richmond is his home track. Could possibly see an HMS driver letting Gordon win. Would be fun to watch.

Dani (California)

Why didn't Regan Smith get penalized for intentionally crashing Danica?

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

Wrecks happen. Drivers don't get penalized. If you buy into he intentionally wrecked Patrick, then you must want Kenseth fined for wrecking Stewart.

brandon birdsboro pa [via mobile]

Who do u have to win in all 3 races at atlanta the week? Thanks for haveing these chats.

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

Kyle Busch in Trucks, Stenhouse in Nationwide and Gordon in Cup.

Jake (Irving, TX)

Hey Newt, what kind of show do you expect The Busch Brothers to put on Friday night in their first truck race as competitors?

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

Expect them to take each other out on lap 236.

Marion (SC)

David ,saw the RPM article on here so does this mean the 43 may have a new driver in 2013,im confident Marcos will stay and will they still have the nationwide team with Michael Annett

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

Nothing definite, but I believe it could happen with the number of talented free agents potentially on the market. I'm confident Ambrose will stay put as well.

Chris Fiegler (Latham, NY)

Hi Newt, with Zippy set to be Danica's crew chief full-time next year in cup, I wondered what you expect from Danica-Zippy and what car number are you hearing her SHR will have?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

You obviously didn't read this. http://espn.go.com/racing/nascar/cup/story/_/id/8310967/tony-stewart-denies-rumor-new-crew-chief.

Brandon (Texas)

Hello Newt, it looks like Ford does not have much respect for the King, RPM should dump Ford and go elsewhere were I'm sure they will be better appreciated. (what's the latest on JoLo???)

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

Nowhere to go. Chevy is full. Toyota isn't offering money. Dodge is gone. As for Logano, look for something in the next 10 days or so. I'm betting 22.

Ron (Smithville)

With Ford transitioning the RPM budget to Penske do you think Jack will scale that back to a 1 car team?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

Petty told me he plans to be two cars.

Ross (Havana)

Rowdy seems happy that he'll be running all three races again because Rowdy says he's constantly learning when he's on the race track. With M&M's and Gibbs loosening the shackles do you expect to see the return of rockin' Rowdy?

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

I hope so.

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)

Hi Newt, do you expect the wild card drivers to go all out the next two races? I was surprised they weren't more aggressive at Bristol.

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

They have to balance aggression vs. all out. Kyle, for example, moved into the second wild card spot with a solid finish. And for the record, I believe they go pretty much all out to win every weeek.

Ross (Havana)

Is Kurt being considered for the RPM #43 or does Kurt prefer to keep running Hendrick cars with Hendrick motors and Hendrick pit crews?

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

RPM folks tell me Kurt still scares the sponsors. Not sure Finch will field a full season in 2013 without sponsorship. Wild card in this is RCR.

Dani (California)

Will more drivers be throwing helmets now that Stewart showed us that it is legal?

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

It's always been legal from what I've seen in the past.

Joanne (Ft. Myers)

With Dale writing off a car with that hard crash yesterday at Kansas, will HMS have a relief driver like maybe Mike Skinner on hand to take over the #88 if Dale can't finish the race?

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

Nah, he's fine.

Dani (California)

I never been to Atlanta Motor Speedway, is it anything like Fontana?

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

Atlanta is 1.5 miles, Fontana 2.0 miles. So no.

Dave (Long Island)

I've been pretty neutral with my stance on Danica. Gotta admit, really impressed with NW & Cup race. If you had to guess, who is her CC in cup next year?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

I agree on Bristol effort. Stewart says they may not know the crew chief until after the season when somebody becomes available. Hard to say at this point.

Andrew (Kentucky)

If Joey goes to Penske in the #22 do you see him returning to his spiritual home at Gibbs and the #20 when Kenseth retires?

David Newton
  (2:21 PM)

Never say never. But Hendrick left the door open or Keselowski when K left, and K is quite happy where he is.

Andrew (Kentucky)

How is it that Penske is always poaching young drivers from HMS (Kezezolowki) and Gibbs (Joey Logano)? Doesn't Penske have a driver development program?

David Newton
  (2:22 PM)

He doesn't to the level he can give them a top ride with a top sponsor like Shell Pennzoil.

Junior (Michigan)

Where do you see Kurt Busch heading next year or is he content staying at Phoenix. Read something that he might head to RCR if sponsor can be found, however I have to ask if Sadler keeps it up in the Nwide series would he not be a logical fit to move up to Cup?

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

RCR is a wild card in this. Phoenix says they'll welcome him back if he gets a sponsor, but that hasn't happened yet. Perhaps a second car at Furniture Row. After that, very slim picking.

Claudia (Western NY)

Any leading candidates to be Danica's Cup crew chief next year?

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

Not yet.

Vernie (NJ)

Hi Newt, good comedy piece on Stewert today. It really made me laugh! Who do you think will finish lower in final points, Stewert or Harvick?

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

Thanks. He can be a funny guy. Interesting on points between Smoke and Happy. So hard to predict, especially after what Stewart did last year. I'll go with Harvick. RCR is a mess right now.

Taylor (VA)

I haven't been this excited for races in a long time. The Wild Card format, with all going for broke and or more wins, is producing some of the best racing I've ever seen.

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

It's arguably the best move NASCAR has made in years.

Gregyour name (La)

Got a bet goin with my uncle on where logAno will drive next year .i say penske what's the chances I win

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

Pretty good.

Matt (Chicago)

Does Kasey Kahne catch Tony Stewart for 10th in the last 2 races before the Chase?

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

That is my prediction. Kahne has more raw speed than maybe any driver in the garage week in and week out. Atlanta is a very good track for him, too. I know I picked Gordon in the Chat, but I remembered I picked Kahne earlier in the week.

Saul (San Diego)

Sir Newton, you could be a champion of driver, what would you pick, IRL, F-1 or NASCAR?

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

NASCAR. Sorry, I'm a Southern boy.

Jeremy (LA)

Glad Isaac's gone from my area. Anyway, who is your top 5 this weekend for the cup race

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

Thoughts have been with all in that area. Glad you're OK. Top 5 for the weekend: Kahne, Gordon, Johnson, Harvick and Earnhardt.

Jim (Bayala)

Can I get a RT Newt @jimbayala Thanks!

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

Remind me later

Jim (Bayala)

With Dale Junebug wrecking at Kansas testing and his string of bad finishes to you think Dale is choking even before the Chase starts?

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

Hardly. And he hasn't run that badly lately. Can't finish in the top 5 every week.

Ross (Havana)

Who do you think pays back Diloon first, Trevor Bayne or Justin Algaier?

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

Dillon. Hard to picture the other two angry.

Saul (San Diego)

Mr. Newton, how fast will #5 be traveling in lap 163.

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

188.888 mph

Ross (Havana)

Do you think Rowdy could pull off the 3 race sweep in Atlanta like he did Bristol?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Nope. Not running as well as he was when he swept Bristol.

Saul (San Diego)

Is BSmith thinking about make more modifications to the Bristol Track?

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Think he's happy his last mistake turned out so good.

Saul (San Diego)

Do you think Gordon will make the Chase

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

If he wins this weekend, yes.

txtechjmacattack (lubbock)

carl's comment that stewert was really dumb to toss a helmet at a moving car because it could have bounced back and hit him in the face was a great observation. do you think nascar should ban that practice for safety reasons?

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

C'mon. What are the odds of the helmet bouncing off the hood and hitting Stewart in the face? NASCAR loved it and probably would like to see more emotion come out.

Chris (New Brunswick, NJ)

Hi Newt: I see that you picked Gordon to win on Sunday. What are Jimmie's chances? #4 eluded him in MI. Thanks!

David Newton
  (2:34 PM)

I did and I didn't. Remembered I picked Kahne in Turn 4 on Tuesday, but I did say of the wild card candidates Gordon was my pick. Jimmie is a threat to win every week.

Sam (UT)

Is it a possible for Logano to the 9 and ambrose to the 43?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Anything is possible, but I don't see it.

casper (DC)

so mr newton, maybe i'm on the wrong page here.. but listening to the 24 radio on Saturday and he said that everyone wanted to use the top line because after the repave it had a "waxy seal from the grinding that had extra grip where the bottom line didnt." that tells me that after some more races are run and that waxy seal wears off, we'll be where we were before the gridning? or am i reading too much into it

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

Think you heard him wrong. What the drivers said was the rubber settled into the grooves from the grinding and created more grip. Before that happened they thought it was more like ice up there. The more they race there, the more grip it'll get with rubber buildup.

D (Phoenix)

Any chance that driver pay could ever transition over to a much smaller base and a corresponding boost in bonus money for victories, making the chase, etc? Seems like that would possibly cut costs while at the same time giving an even bigger incentive to go for wins.

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

Here's what I'd like to see. Take money given to the bottom five or so drivers and apply that to the winner. Would reward winning more and discourage start and parkers.

Jeremy (Port Angeles, WA)

In you Tony Stewart crew chief rumor article does that mean Greg Zipadelli will not be Danica Sprint Cup crew chief in 2013?

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

Pretty sure that is what it said.

Greg (La)

How bout logAno to the 43??

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

If the 22 and JGR fell through that would be a nice option for King.

Joseph (Seattle )

Hey Newt, in a way don't you think Kyle running all 3 races this weekend will help him? Sure seemed like alot of the wins in Sprint cup, happened when he was running all the races, versus just one a weekend.

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

I've always felt the more a driver runs on a weekend the more he gets comfortable and in a groove. So yes, it could help from that perspective.

Jackie (Spring Lake NC)

I think RPM has done pretty well with the support they have maybe Dodge should hvae made them their flagship team

David Newton
  (2:39 PM)

No way could Petty have taken on that role for Dodge. Not enough resources.

Sam (UT)

Think the rain will be a factor again? boo racing on a monday.

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

Hearing like 30 percent chance. Not too bad.

Jim (Bayala)

Is Dale Jr. scheduled as a guest speaker next week at the Democratic convention in Charlotte?

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

No, but he will make an appearance with a sponsor. I believe it will be at Charlotte Motor Speedway and not at the arena, but I could be wrong.

Eric (ohio)

Do you see the desire in kyle busch to win a championship? Like we do with brad k. Edwards hamlin..

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

As much or more.

Jackie (Spring Lake NC)

Chances RCR replaces Burton in the 31 for next year and if so who would it likely be

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Doubtful. Jeff is keeping that seat warm for Austin Dillon in 2014.

Matt (Chicago)

Disappointing news about the King's team today...do you have any insights as to why a Dodge deal didn't work out, or was it just needing the engines built?

David Newton
  (2:42 PM)

It didn't work out simply because Dodge said it wouldn't be in Cup in 2013. Told they never really had serious conversations. I didn't think it was disappointing news. He plans to re-sign with Ford and stay at two Cup teams. That's pretty good.

Mike (U.S.)

Your top 5 and a DH?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

Kahne, Gordon, Johnson, Harvick and Earnhardt. Darkhorse is Logano. Haven't picked him in a while, so why not.

Vinnie (ATL)

I have been to the Monaco Grand Prix, Indy 500, and Daytona 500. Last Sat night, I attended my first race at Bristol. What a great experience. There was side by side racing all over the track. Bristol is not boring! I just wish there was a better finish.

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

No, it wasn't boring, but the spring race was a bit of a snoozer. The changes Bruton Smith made to the track brought back the old school racing. It was great. Agree on finish. I was hoping for green-white-checkered.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, thanks again for the the follow. You think Stenhouse wins a Cup race next year in his rookie campaign? I think he will surprise some people if Fennig is his CC and the 17 crew is together.

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

He could, but I wouldn't put a lot on that. Rookies tend to struggle even with great resources.

Claudia (Western NY)

Have we seen the last of Steven Wallace?

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Could be.

Bart (East Bay)

Hi Newt, Harvick has finished 3rd in points for 2 years straight. You think he dumps to 12th this year?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Not that far back. He can be pretty consistent at the Chase tracks even when he's lacking raw speed. A third straight third might be tough, though.

Tommy (miami)

How do think 24 will do at richmond? Your fellow espn writers are assuming that 18 has it locked already. They forget that if it wasnt for menards intentional spin o

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

I wouldn't say the 18 is a lock. I can see Gordon winning this weekend and being a challenger at Richmond.

Jackie (Spring Lake NC)

Does E. Sadler have a NW deal for next year

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

Not sure finalized.

Todd (Georgia)

Why do you think RC got in between Trevor and Austin Dillon after the race Friday night? The more i see Austin the less of a fan I am becoming. He just seems a little arrogant to me. Is my feelings of him correct or totaly off base?

David Newton
  (2:48 PM)

All good drivers are arrogant to a degree. Don't you think Earnhardt was? Guess RC just wanted to make sure Austin didn't do anything that could cost him points and a shot at the NW title. Pretty cool seeing Trevor fired up like that.

Bass (Speedway)

Is Austin Dillon not man enough to stand up for himself without Grandpa getting in the middle?

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

I look at RC as an owner as much as a grandpa there. An owner would have done the same thing.

Jackie (Spring Lake NC)

What are the chances RCR cleans house on the crew chief side of things for next season

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

An overhaul, but probably not a clean sweep. Slugger should stay with Menard.

Chris (New Brunswick, NJ)

Hi Newt! I know that you picked Jeff to win, but what are the #48 chances to win #4? He was sooooooo close in MI. Thanks!

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Oh, Jimmie will be a threat to win. He's a threat every race. I can't pick him all the time, though.

Kristin (NYC)

What tracks should be next to be repaved?

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Maybe Kentucky.

Matt (Charlotte)

Newt, any news on the Dinger, talk about a guy getting the short end of the stick because of so many other available drivers this year. I think he would be great with Keselowski.

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

He has to get out of his Road to Recovery program first. Not sure when that will happen. Don't see him with Brad K. Brad K was pretty tough on drivers that put anything into their bodies.

Jay (Ga)

IF SHR can't get sponsorship for Newman, what are chances he'll be in Cup in 2013? It'd be difficult to imagine a 16 race winner in his prime and not a trouble maker without a solid ride

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

He should land somewhere, but I believe Stewart will find a place. If not, he will have to take a step back and hope to impress enough to get another top ride.

Matt (Charlotte)

Sorry, meant Vickers, any news on him, I know Dinger is done.

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

Gotcha. Vickers probably is looking at another part-time schedule with the 55 at MWR.

jason (lincoln)

would you say RCR is the most overrated team in nascar? haven't won a title in 17 seasons. Only 1 driver the contends for wins (Harvick)

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

You make valid points.

stump (MO)

Where did the rumor about Edwards come from? It was pretty much out of the blue to all of us. And please don't link back to your article, we've read it.

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Not sure where it came from. And I linked earlier to save time explaining.

Joe (PA)

Newt, I think the truck series produces the best racing in the sport; it's sad that outside of Ty Dillon and maybe Parker Kligerman the chances of making the climb to Cup is slim to none. We ever see Buescher, Peters, Lofton etc. in cup?

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

I agree, racing is spectacular. There are some great young drivers as you mentioned and I see at least three making it to Cup in the next three or four years.

John (PA)

David, Is this it for Dodge in NASCAR?I've heard rumors that their Fiat management is none too crazy about NASCAR.

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

The folks overseas made this decision, so until that changes they could be out for a while.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

What about Vickers is getting the #18 JGR Nationwide car full time next year? Think that happens once Logano goes to Penske?

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

Don't see that, but I have heard that rumor.

Eric (Little River, SC)

Did Ryan Newman's bad luck at Bristol pretty much end his Chase hopes or does he still have a shot?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Understanding how good the competition is at Richmond and Atlanta, I'd say he is toast.

Jay (Ga)

If Biffle can win the title, will he finally get the respect from the media he deserves? He seems to always be the guy thats overlooked, but yet he 's usually in hunt.

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

It's not the media that doesn't respect him. The media totally respects Biff. He's a great competitor and a great quote. If he wins a title he'll have done what no other driver has by winning a title in all three series. I'd say that will get him plenty of recognition.

Teri (North Hollywood)

Any chance Matt Kenseth can carry the #17 to the Home Depot car?

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

Hard to believe Jack Roush will let Kenseth and the number go.

Teri (North Hollywood)

Hi David - Just thought I'd ask how you are feeling these days?

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

Thanks for asking. I'm doing great. Lost 27 pounds and the heart is pumping strong.

Brian (Middletown, PA)

Even though Richard Petty said he has sponsorship for 2013, how would the racing world be without a Petty car in the field?

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

It would be very sad. Glad he's determined to keep it going.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

Who is going to be an "also ran" once they get into the chase? Or would you rather not say?

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

Hard to say after what Stewart did last year. Perhaps a Bowyer or Truex, but that may be a stretch.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

So the rumor is once Logano goes to Penske Vickers will get the #18 JGR Nationwide ride full time next year. What are the odds of that hppening?

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

Could happen.

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

Thanks for the Chat. As usual, I had a blast. If you have more on your mind ask me on Twitter at @DnewtonESPN. Until next week.
