What's happening everyone? Up and rolling with the Friday chat. With no UFC 151 this weekend, this morning the "Filla in Manila" went down with Arlovski/Sylvia. Anyone watch? How are we handling the void of no UFC on Labor Day weekend? Edgar's stepping in for Erik Koch to fight Jose Aldo, giving us a superfight to contemplate. What's on your minds?
really how many wins must i receive to win everyones love back
One solid knockout will do. Take it out on Belfort. Once the UFC (and Dana particularly) begins singing your praises, the chorus will swell up again.
One injury completely cancels a card and a few days later an injury creates a must see card...oh the irony...
Isn't that the truth, Raff? Timing was pretty good for this announcement to keep our minds off of the calamitous Labor Day weekend.
Gotta love the host on mma live, " way to diffuse the situation Chuck" ....... guess even talking MMA gets heated sometimes.........
That was on the Ronda Rousey making the P4P list, wasn't it? You should have been there for the pre-taping sit around. Franklin was ready to throw down with Josh and I. (Not literally....just verbally...and literally if we disagreed).
Been a while...Hello Chuck. What % chance do you give Vitor? If Frankie beats Aldo do you think Aldo would consider moving up to 155? Doesn't he tend to have trouble making weight? I'm still pissed off over UFC 151 being cancelled. End of Tangent.
Let's tackle these one at a time. The chance I give Vitor is 6%. There's always his power and craftiness, even when fighting a younger, stronger, lengthier, less fervent fighters. As for Aldo, if he loses (and particularly closely) he may lobby for a rematch since it was his division for so long, but I wouldn't be surprised if he tried his hand as a lightweight. He cuts a lot of weight.
We're a week away from football season! Who do you got going to the Super Bowl? I say Packers/Patriots.
A football question out of the gate. I am going with the 49ers and Broncos. I like the Broncos to reverse the 1989 Super Bowl where they lost 55-10, and beat the Niners by the same score.
Why don't you wear the hat on TV? It's your calling card!
I don't want to get Bert Sugared.
will the winer of Rockhold vs Souza be taken derectly to the ufc
Remains to be seen (and how things play out with Showtime), but at some point these guys will make their way to the UFC. And the middleweight division will have a lot of new depth.
How upset are you not to be in Vegas this week?
Those blackjack tables aren't going to play themselves, Adam. At first I was a little disappointed, but honestly, fight week is such a grind that the silver lining is you catch a breather.
Did you see Bibiano Fernandes? What was all the fuss about for him coming to the UFC?
I didn't see the fight, but heard he didn't exactly light it up in there. As we've seen with guys like Hector Lombard and even Hatsu Hioki, it's hard to get a full gauge on potential until they fight beasts regularly.
Greg Jackson didn't want one of his "finishers" Cerrone to strike with Diaz (a dangerous striker), I believe Greg would also advise JBJ to "lay and pray" if he ever had to fight Silva or JDS ... your thoughts
Jackson catches a lot grief for adding caution to a fighter's repertoire, but I think it's a little exaggerated. Clay Guida coming out and running from Maynard was weird, but when dealing in game plans they may not play out the way you think they will. However, if Jones did fight Silva, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see him take Silva down. Why not? Chael laid the blueprint, and Jones has the means.
Should Greg Jackson be scared of Dana White in all reality, or does he have ground to stand his own and be his own man?
It's not the first time Dana's been mad at Jackson. In fact, if Dana wasn't so disappointed with the Guida game plan with Maynard, you have to wonder if he's have said some of those things about murdering the sport, etc. It's cumulative. But Jackson's guys win, and there are plenty of instances where Jackson's guys do so explosively.
What up Chuck? Couple quick questions: You think Frankie will come up with a good game plan to dethrone Aldo? And, what was the rule regarding soccer kicks in ONE FC? Didn't catch the event, sounded confusing. Thanks.
I wrote about the Aldo/Edgar fight today, and pointed out that Edgar always has a "how," which fogs our lenses. We automatically see Aldo creeping all over him with big long shots. We tune in to see his "how." As far the ONE FC, soccer kicks are forbidden, but doesn't sound like everyone was privy to that.
is the aldo/edgar fight a sign of things to come? could a gsp/silva, jones/silva, or jones/dos santos be on the horizon as well?
This is a "superfight" that made the most sense, and I did believe it would happen first. I do think the UFC is heavily leaning towards putting on GSP/Silva. Both camps want it, and so do fans (though they'd prefer Jones/Silva) and the UFC. I think it finally happens so long as GSP handles Condit.
Seems like people wanting to crucify Jon Jones have now changed their tune a little bit. Was this the media's influence? A lot of people stood up for Jones' decision as time went on. Thanks!
It's the nature of things. At first there's an emotional moment where everybody wants to cast blame. Then cooler heads prevail, and logic is played at within the media and fans, and pretty soon Jones looks smart. I still think he should have taken the fight, but I can't fault him (and nor do I blame him) for not.
No, ONE FC allows soccer kicks if the ref says it is ok to do them. It is a BIZARRE rule
There you go. I haven't had a chance to watch the fight yet.
Thanks for the chat, Chucky. Who are you taking in the Penn/MacDonald fight? I am against the grain here. I think the extra time to prepare favors Penn, and he springs the upset.
Still going MacDonald. Dude is too focused. I spent some time with him a month ago, right before he was injured, and I'm not sure I've seen a more driven fighter. He'll show up correct with Penn, and beat Penn on Penn's best day.
GSP will have two or three REAL TOUGH contenders after Condit, guys who could truly take the title from him, here's hoping he stays and fights them.
Yeah, the welters is pretty full of challengers right now. Guess that's what happens when the champion is sidelined for so long. Still want to see Diaz/GSP before it's all said and done.
Loving the idea of Joe Lauzon against Gray Maynard. Seems like a FOTN for sure. But does Lauzon get mentioned in title contention with a win?
I think he will, but it's a deep division. Maynard should get right back in the discussion with a win. For one, he will have beaten Guida and Lauzon after losing to Edgar. And two, he hasn't fought Henderson before (if Bendo's still champ), so he might have some pull. So would Lauzon, but I don't think he'd be next.
This might sound like a cheesy question, but in all seriousity, what is the best part about working for ESPN?
Todd Grisham. Dude is hilarious.
What % do you give Frankie against Aldo? 30-35 % range
Hard to say. I guess I would give him around a 40% chance. He's so defiant, and he's always competitive. But he's fighting in Brazil, against one of the game's most accurate strikers....so, 40% off the top of my head.
Are you going to be in Toronto for UFC 152?
Not sure, but it's not looking like it. I think Brett Okamoto and Franklin McNeil will be on hand, along with the video crew. There'll be plenty of coverage, either way.
Chuck, what happened to Eric Koch exactly? Why's he out?
He injured his knee. He's understandably bummed out about it.
How come you don't insult your readers like Dan Rafael does?
Does Rafael insult his readers? I am going to have to take this into consideration. He has a lot more Twitter followers than me, which obviously means people like being insulted.
With Dantas losing to Nam in Shooto Brazil 33 have we seen the last of Bellator champs fighting elsewhere? Hasn't gone well.
I sort of hope so, David, but I think Bellator was trying to be fair with their property. Dantas would have been out until November, and coming off his title win he just wanted to stay busy and make some money. Now he might not fight again until January, so it backfired. If it were up to me, I'd improve the model so that champs fight more frequently in my own promotion rather than take fights elsewhere.
How bad does Michigan get beat tomorrow? I think Alabama covers the 14 points :(
Hard to say...but I am leaning that way too.
Shalom Chuck! Is there any chance that Sonnen and Jones will be the next TUF coaches if each wins their next bout? I could see the two being coaches and fighting on the coveted 4th of July card in Vegas!
Interesting. Hadn't thought of that, but that would sure give a shot of adrenaline to the franchise, wouldn't it? Not sure the UFC would want to shelve either guy for the time it takes to make the show, but that would make for some fun. Wonder if we'd be able to stomach Sonnen by the end of it? (Or Jones, for that matter?)
Will Stefan Struve ever become a legit HW contender? I just can't see him getting past the JDS, Cain, Reem level of HWs.
Was talking to Jorge Rivera about Struve a little while ago, and he thinks there's a chance Struve could be up there one day. Bottom line is he's young and he's evolving (pretty rapidly). Time will tell, but I can't see him beating any of those guys you mention right now.
Whats next for werdum? Do not see too many challengers without taking a big drop in competition?
Not sure who will be next for Werdum, with most of the big guns busy. I would say it has to be a top ten guy, though, because he already took that Russow fight when most thought it was beneath him (and it was). He needs a challenge. Overeem/Werdum II? If the first one wasn't such a snoozer, that might have been the call.
How can I become a referee or judge?
Get in touch with the California athletic commission, and they'll let you know how to go about it.
What is your favorite Segal movie? Do you think he coulda been a contenda in UFC?
'Into the Sun,' an underrated masterpiece. And, well, no. I can't see him contending with anybody other than maybe Dan Mirigliotta for position at the buffet line in the media room.
When do you see the proposed Silva/St. Pierre superfight at Cowboys Stadium going down? Also, if the fight happens will they have the first ever triple title card to help fill the stadium?
Not sure of the timetable. GSP is traditionally an "every six months" kind of fighter. For this, even at a catchweight, he'd probably want to add some bulk. I doubt it would happen in January, when the UFC was talking about a big event, but it could go down first quarter of 2013.
Do you have any cool stories of being recognized in public yet for your MMA work? I always wondered that because -- no disrespect -- but you are a niche guy in sports and I wondered if some dude next to you at the john was like, "Yo Homes, you think BJ Penn should retire?"
Haha. It's happened a couple of times. The funniest thing was in Atlantic City, when I saw a fan waving me over. He was all excited and energetic, and had his program in his hand like he wanted me to sign it. I got over to him, and he says, "hey, aren't you Mike Chiappetta?"
barring any injuries.... Rio card looks great!
It does. Guess the UFC is making up for that UFC 147 card...
Rewatched cormier barnett last night and was impressed at the way his striking has improved. I forsee him handling mir, then a possible number 1 contender bout with overeem in early 2012?
I think he handles Mir, too, and I'd be down for Overeem/Cormier. That would be a crazy No. 1 contender bout while JDS/Velasquez plays out. Sign me up. (Lot of red tape to get through, though).
Hey, I love Frankie Edgar as much as the next MMA fan - dude is spectacular. But after dropping to feather, his first fight is for the belt? Doesn't seem fair. Shouldn't Zombie get first crack at Aldo with Koch off the table at the moment?
I think there are a lot of reasons for the match, the biggest being that it's the best possible featherweight fight that can be made. I was looking forward to a Korean Zombie/Edgar fight, but I'd take the alternative. Is it fair? Lots of things that go on in this game aren't.
How gangster is Franklin McNeil in person? Dude looks like he coulda slapped on the Million Dollar Dream and wasted some fools back in the dizzay.
Dude is always throwing gang signs and smiting his chest and saying "What?" all bent out of shape.
Of course, I'm lying. Franklin's a real cool cat. One of the nicer guys in this business.
Alabama will crush michigan by 28
I don't doubt this.
Are you a fan of any particular fighter? And if so Whom?
I've always been a fan of Dan Henderson's. Was real disappointed that he had to drop out of the Jones fight. Also like Matt Brown. How cool is that fight with Swick? I dig.
If Diaz vs GSP goes down , and i hope it does. Who would you give the advantage to? I thought Diaz won the Condit fight (but I can see how it went the other way). I think the only advantage Gsp would be his wrestling and points winning (Greg Jackson) style
I hope we find ourselves wondering about this fight because it's on the horizon one day, but I'd still lean towards GSP. His striking is excellent, too. He's athletic and bigger. On the ground Diaz is good off his back, but I think St. Pierre would account for it.
Seems to me that Dan Henderson will probably never get that title shot. When he comes back, he'll be closer to 43, and battling back from a knee injury. That's not exactly a great scenario.
He'll have a tough paddle ahead, Jenn, and even Hendo has said he's not sure where he'll fall in the pecking order once he's ready. He's ambitiously gunning for a DEC return, but I can't see that. If he comes back by FEB, I'd suspect he'd get somebody like Glover Teixeira or Gustafsson, whoever is not saddles with Jones. Rua/Hendo II? Also possible. But the landscape changes so fast, it's impossible to say.
With Sylvia/Arlovski ruled a "no contest," you looking forward to a FIFTH fight? Might have to start up with the Roman Numerals here.
Argh. I haven't even mustered the strength to watch the fourth fight, and already talks of a fifth. I said on Twitter that they should cap this rivalry at 120 rounds so we don't overdo it. I stick to that.
Any word on what's next for Renan Barao? Will he wait out Dominick Cruz's recovery
I think he's still waiting to find out what Dominick Cruz's timetable for healing is. I asked Michael McDonald's manager if they'd been approached yet about fighting for the interim belt, and he said they'd made it known they'd love that fight for December. Will it happen? Depends on Cruz and his rehab.
How come the UFC bans journalists from covering their fights? That can't be accepted in other sports.
It's one of those things, Rosebud. They have the ability to credential whom they choose, and they exercise the right. And it affects some really good journalists out there.
When you look back on Dana White's stance against having freak fights (which explains why Kimbo was cut so quickly), how can we possibly be ok that Toney-Couture actually happened?
I think he wanted to prove a point that boxers were delusional to think they could just jump into MMA and succeed. At the same time, in retrospect, it does kind of go against the whole "this is the UFC, and you've got to earn your way in" vibe that's played up.
Cruz vs Barao and Michael McDonald vs Barao which way are you leaning?
I would love to see McDonald get a chance at Barao if Cruz is going to be out for a long, long time. Why have a void in the bantams? Might as well keep it moving. Besides, McDonald could become the youngest ever champion (though it would be the interim belt).
I go to Dominicks Gym. Dude is excited and he thinks that he matches up well against Barao. Although he really wanted to smash Fabers face. What do you think about his chances?
I'd pick Cruz against any bantamweight out there right now. I like him against Barao, too. He's just a really smart fighter, and he can slow things down to see them unfolding.
Over/under games that Peyton Manning plays in this year: 11
I am going over. He took a big hit against the 49ers in the preseason and whiplashed pretty good. He got right back up. I think he'll be durable, and play in the bulk of the games (will say he'll play in 14, with two games off because the byes are secure).
Seems like, even though the last few PPVs have been weak, the UFC is gearing up for some ridiculous cards. FOX 5 is stacked, and so is UFC 153 and UFC 155. Agree?
Yeah, they are putting together some great cards for the end of the year. FOX 5 is awesome, and so is this Brazil card. The end of the year one, too. I think that if there was a little silver lining in the cancellation of UFC 151 it was that some of the other cards got fortified. Even UFC 152, which now has two title fights.
I realize the timing is different, but do you think Jones would have accepted to fight Sonnen on the amount of notice they're having Aldo fight Edgar?
Yeah, it's night and day. That was eight days notice, this is six weeks. He'd have taken the Sonnen fight for sure with that kind of time. He took Belfort with a smaller window to prepare than that.
Any word on what Miguel Torres did to get cut from the UFC (again)???
Sounds like another disciplinary action, though I am not exactly sure what it was this time.
Chuck, let's talk about this: There used to be a fighter that was MY GUY. A dude that I talked up and said, "Yo, this guy gone win the belt from GSP one day." Then he disappeared. They used to call him Dustin Hazelett. What happened, yo?
I miss that maestro mustache he had. When Hazelett was fighting Koscheck back at UFC 82, I remember thinking "Kos is lucky he's catching that cat now. Give him another year or two, and look out." And he did look great against Burkman and McCrory. But it all went downhill fast when people forced him into stand-up battles. Paul Daley wrecked him good. Not sure what's up with him now....
Chuck you are the man and I want your Job. What would be the best way for an average Joe get into the mma game with out being a fighter
You can always start with a blog (a lot of people did) to get into the writing racket. But just make sure you're don't work as a PR man for the fighters you're writing about.
Interesting points on Aldo/Edgar, I see Frankie being able to move out of the way of a lot of the hammers from Aldo, You?
Speed against speed. One thing that Edgar always had over 155ers was speed, and that ends at 145. I think he'll make it hard for Aldo to zero in, but Aldo is so fast and precise....
Buy or sell Hendo getting another UFC title shot before he retires?
Will buy. I think he'll come back, get a win, and end up back in a title shot.
Hi Chuck, in the aftermath of the aborted 151 (fiasco) are there any ideas (workable ones) that you've heard to prevent it happening again (i.e. a clause in fighter contracts that the UFC says they cant reject fights in the event of injury to i.e. Dan Henderson) or outlawing certain types of training (impossible to police) in the leadup to a fight?
Not sure what can be done. Can't tell fighters to go half-strength in training, that's impossible to monitor (and ridiculous for men prepping to punch holes in each others heads). Contractual language is an option, but it would have to be tailored to situations. I think the UFC just has to make sure it has a co-main event worthy of being thrust up. Cards just have to be deeper.
Holy crap...you're hosting a chat...where ya been Chucky???? we missed ya!
Had some technical issues for a few weeks, but they're sorted out. Was here last week. Where were you, Carter?
Though its a WAYS out, who u got in Cain/JDS? I like Cain, leading to a trilogy
Still liking JDS. I pointed out that Cain has a tendency to get hit ahead of the last fight, pointing out the Kongo bout from a couple years prior. I was told "that was eons ago, won't happen," etc. Still see that as a problem. JDS is too good on the feet, and he's too good at keeping it there.
There's a lot of people in Toms River who are hoping so.
Hazelett had a kid and is retired
There you go.
When if ever will we see Gilbert Melendez in the UfC and will he get a title shot off the bat. I think he should or atleast send a top ten light weight to fight him
This is a question that's been ongoing for the last two years plus. At this point, I'm not sure we'll see Melendez in the UFC. By the time we do, he may have lost some sheen. It's all dependent on the Showtime deal, and what happens going forward, but Melendez against UFC opposition has become the Pacquiao/Mayweather of MMA.
OK, guys, I've got to shut this thing down. Thanks for stopping in here, and let's do it again next week. If I didn't get to your question, hit me on Twitter, @ChuckMindenhall.
