What an adventurous AM. Flight delayed by about an hour. I landed in Newark at 1:35 and have been in my hotel room all of 6 minutes, but I'm here so let's chat. I figure it'll be Cowboys intensive since they play tomorrow but my Buckeyes won their opener, so college football is cool, and the Rangers have hit another gear since August began so baseball conversation is welcomed. Let's roll!!!!
Hey Jacque, your yards per attempt stat is flawed. Romo's 8.0 career average is 5th best ALL TIME. Where do you get the best qbs ave 8.5? Only Otto Graham surpassed that 8.5 benchmark you set. Kurt Warner? 7.9. Peyton Manning? 7.6. Tom Brady? 7.5 http://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/pass_yds_per_att_career.htm
last season, Aaron Rodgers averaged 9.2 per attempt. Tom Brady 8.5. Drew Brees 8.3. Eli Manning 8.3. The game, as you know, has changed. If you look at that list 10 years from now, it will be completely different. That said, the point was that in any ERA StephenMcGee's yards per attempt of less than 6.0 was unacceptable. It was an indication that he was cautious to a fault and wouldn't even attempt to make plays on a regular basis.
The fact he was released and passed through waivers is an indication, for now, that he's nowhere close to being an NFL QB
JJT, is there a player cut from another team that u envision the 'Boys bringing in?
nope. But they will. I never even heard of Chris Cochert until they signed him.
Should the Cowboys take a look at Winslow as a backup tightend? It would give them two pass catching tightends.
Ask yourself this? From what you know and what you've read and what you've heard, does he sound like Jason Garrett's type of guy. And if he isn't, is he so talented that Garrett would be willing to put up with him. The answer on both counts should be no.
JJT, who was the most impressive rookie/veteran in camp? Thanks-
veteran: tie between DeMarco Murray, Sean Lee and Tony Romo. Newcomer: Brandon Carr. Rookie: James Hanna
JJT, what are the thoughts around Valley Ranch on Carter? Better than expected, average, or disappointing so far?
they're excited to see him play. He had only 41 defensive snaps last year. We don't have to guess. Time will tell. Soon
Mr. JJT, I'm sorry to keep asking you this question, on the eve of the biggest game of the season what's your prediction on the game and the final record for the Boyz?Playoffs?
I see the Cowboys 8-8. They have too many questions on the defensive line and not much to speak of when it comes to depth. They play 6 of the first 9 on the road, including a stretch of 4 out of 5. They also have the NFC South and AFC North, which are strong divisions this season. They could be a much improved team and still have the same record as last year. They're certainly entitled to prove me wrong
Free and Smith each allowed 9.5 sacks. According to pro football talk, Free allowed 5 QB hits and 34 pressures, which tied for 11th in the league. Clearly, he needs to be better and he should now that he's returned to the comfort of the right side. I don't think the Cowboys have any offensive edge because I don't believe in their OL. Of course, that could change after the game
Will McGee be back on the Dallas Roster Thursday?
You never know, but I doubt it. But you never know
Hey JJT! Hope all is well with you! I know you aren't high on the Mavericks this season. Do you think the Mavericks will stand pat throughout the season, or should we expect some midseason moves? Thanks man! GO MAVS!!!
They look like a team that will stand pat and see if they can make it happen next summer with some type of dramatic move
Dallas O-Line gives up more sacks? or the Dallas Defense gets more Sacks?
Right now, I'd have to say Dallas OL. Cowboys have just 3 sacks in last 2 games against Eli. They must generate more pressure, regardless of whether they sack him or not
If you were Head Coach of Dallas, would you play Witten Wednesday if he's cleared to play? Or wait 11 Days and play him at Seattle?
nope. I'd play him in Seattle. The absolute worst thing is to build a game plan around him playing, which is what they'd do, and than have him get hurt early and have to leave. You don't want him to be a bit player. He's either all in - not he's not. Against Seattle, he can be all in
What does the "eye-ball" test tell you about Mo Claiborne - can the dude play?
He barely played in the preseason. Let's just wait and see. Trust me, it will reveal itself. We don't have to speculate. That said, I'd give him 8 games before making any real judgment - good or bad - and then I'd say at the end of the year you'll know for sure whether he's going to be a beast down the road or a bust. If I were betting, I'd say beast.
I don't think Dallas is supposed to beat the NYG on the road in the opener. fantastic, if they can. But it's hardly the end of the world if they don't. More important, is how they play. If they lose will it be a performance they can build on kind of like the Jets' game last year. If they get blown out, which I don't see happening, that would be a problem
Will Victor Cruz Salsa Dance tomorrow night???
At some point, I would think so
Hi JJT,Feeling uneasy about the Cowboys O-Line. Besides Tyron Smith please let me know some reasons for optimismThanks
got none. Sorry. I would expect them to be solid at best. I don't expect awful and overwhelmed. They will be better a month from now. Don't underestimate not having a single game together as a unit in training camp
When and what will you know/see that will make you change your heart about the Boys this season? Do they have to split witht eh Eagles and Giants or have to dominant a handful of games before anyone gives us a contender title??
how about win some games? Performance dictates everything. They play well and win some tough road games they will earn my respect and the respect of others. That's what every other team must do. 120-120 since 1997.
Hi Mr. Taylor hope the wife and kids are doing well. I guess this is the week we get solid answeres on what kind of season we expect to have , do you think the Cowboys even have a chance if Witten doesn't play? Not to bash Phillips but Witten is such valuable relief valve that seems to have ESP with Romo ?What do you think the chances are without Wiitten ? I say with Witten it is about 40% but without him not even half that much .
it'll be interesting to see what approach Garrett takes. Will he go with more 3 receiver sets. Or will be go with more traditional 2 RB and 2 WR formations because the Cowboys used two or more tight ends about 58 percent of the time last season
JJT, what's up dude? I definitely understand the reasoning behind the Cowboys finishing 3rd in the NFC East. However, we all saw what Romo did with a mediocre O-Line last year. I know we can never assume, but if he has those kinds of numbers this year, and the defense is improved (it has to be right?) can you see the Cowboys making a run this year?
this team traditionally finds ways to lose. If it can find ways to win this season, then all things are possible. But I have to see it happen. I'm not going on hope.
Who would be missed more witten or ratliff?
Witten. No replacement for him. Lissemore and Brent provide some relief for Ratliff
hey JJT if the the colts gave up a 2nd and a 6th rounder for vontay davis, and i know at one point they were very interested in mike jenkins. if they offers were similar do you think the cowboys should of considered the deal?
yea, but he hasn't practiced but a couple of days this entire off-season. It's doubtful the Colts would've given up that much for a dude who was hurt all offseason
How much playing time do you think jenkins will get if he's active?
not much. Maybe in the dime. I'm interested in seeing that myself.
Why did the cowboys have no interest in bring back adrien hamilton and danny coale to the practice squad?
Hamilton did poorly on ST, which is unacceptable for a dude who's a backup LB. He has some skills, but the Cowboys obviously chose to go another direction. Baltimore picked him up and put him on the practice squad so it'll be interesting to see how he develops. I will say this: in the short time Garrett has been the coach, I haven't seen Dallas cut or release a player who has thrived elsewhere. we'll see.
the giants have always picked on orlando scandrick since he was a rookie. do you see more of the same tomorrow night?
Why not? until he makes a play or some plays, why wouldn't you keep attacking him
The cowboy traded a draft pick for cook. so at what point in the season do you think he will be ready to start at center?
the dude was the 3rd string center in Miami. I wouldn't just assume he's a starter. Costa isn't great, but neither is this dude
If the playoff satrted today would davish be the game one starter?
I think Matt Harrison would get the ball first, but Yu might get it 2nd. He's making a charge though
how can the cowboys get dez more involved in the second half of games this season?
Dez has to be in better shape, which he is. Dez has to run better routes, which he's worked on. And he'll get more opportunities if he does that
How much do you see Hanna's roll increasing this season with the injury to Witten?
Witten will probably only miss one start. I wouldn't expect Hanna to be a difference-maker this season. He'll make a couple of plays, though, because he can run and he can catch
Whos the punt and kick returner this year?
dez on punts and lance dunbar tomorrow, I think, on KO returns
Cowboy's front 3 looked pretty decent without Ratliff in the pre season (starters of course). I see Hatcher as the man making the difference. Do you see Ryan changing up the scheme with Ratliff out? Or is he fully confident in Brent/Lissemore?
Brent will play first and second down in a lot of cases and Lissemore will be in on pass-rushing situations
hi jjt do u think locklear can keep dware at bay
this is a player Ware should dominate, but we also know the dude is going to get some help whether it's from a tight end or a RB.
Do you think Carr and Claiborne are more suited to go up against the giants over newman and jenkins who are more finesse corners
c'mon man. That's pretty obvious, right?
JJT... Without going so far as to say this is a must-win game for the Boys, would a loss to the Giants in week 1 already put the Boys behind the 'eight ball'?
A must win does not exist in Week 1
Why do you think people dont think that ware is a clutch defensive player?
because the Cowboys have missed the playoffs three of the past 4 seasons
over or under ten sacks for spencer?
under. He gets around the QB but struggles to finish the job. The Cowboys need him to finish the job
Do you think bruce carter will be a upgrade from bradie and brooking from last year? if yes in what way?
he has the speed and athleticism to cover. Bradie and Brooking couldn't do that. He will be OK against the run, but he can be a difference-maker against the pass
Whom else to can play the slot other than scandrick and where does mike jenkins fit if he's never played the slot?
Jenkins can play the slot, but the route combinations in the slot are different and the speed of the game is different in the slot. If Jenkins had been healthy all offseason, he'd be the starting nickel guy. But he's not going to be able to beat out scandrick
What are your expectations of barry church tomorrow night? And how much (if any) will jenkins play?
A solid performance. No more, no less. Don't get beat deep and make all the plays you're supposed to make. The lights are bright. It's time to step up
Are the new guards upgrades over kosier and hollands
yes. they can move a little and they're healthy. Holland and Kosier are each at home. That says something
He rushed the passer 411 times last season, according to Pro Football Focus. Ware did it 476 times. How many more opportunities does Spencer need
Has your predcition on the Red River Rivalry changed after Week 1?
no cause I hadn't thought about the Red River Rivalry, and I won't for a couple more weeks
witten word will probably come down later tonight.
hey guys, it has been real, but I gotta get some other work done. Great chat. Let's talk again next Tuesday
