Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:03 PM)

What's up chatters?

Dee (Vegas)

With Office Depot bowing out of sponsoring the 14 car? What are the chances that Tony takes the hodgepodge of remaining sponsorship from the 39 car to fill in? I don't think Office Depot leaving bodes will for Newman. Could it be the Tony and Danica show at SHR next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:04 PM)

It could Dee. We'll have to wait and see. But typically, if you don't have sponsorship in place by now for the following season, it's hard to get it.

John (Pittsburgh)

I think 24 is gonna be very competitive at Richmond. Last year he was on his way to winning Richmond if it wasnt for Paul Menards "spin"..And not that it means anything but the last 4 wins at Richmond for 18 have all come In May, in september the last 4 years, hes led zero laps..

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

Interesting. I didn't realize that. Whatever happens,it should be fun to watch.

Dee (Vegas)

Hi Terry, enjoyed Turn4 today. Been a Truex fan for a long time. Its been nice to see the 56 run up front this year, but a couple of races, (Kansas, Darlington, and Atlanta in particular) have been brutal. When is that team's luck gonna change?

Terry Blount
  (2:06 PM)

If you run up front often enough, eventually the victory will come. Sunday after the race was as down as I've seen Martin, but he should be encouraged with how well they are running heading to the Chase.

Tim (Colorado)

I know it is too early to tell, but the Joey/ Matt swap seems to be eerily similar to the Dale Jr./ Kyle Bush Swap.

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

Don't really see the similarity, but this move could be good for both guys. Matt will have great equipment in the 20 and a big-time sponsor. Joey needed a fresh outlook and should fit in nicely at Penske, a team on the rise that will have Ford engines next year.

Zach Cross (Church Hill)

Do you think Carl Edwards will ever win a championship. Does he have a option out in his contract he should leave Jack.

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

No Zach. He's not leaving Roush. He settled that ridiculous rumor last weekend. And yes, I think he will win a championhup. It's just been one of those hard luck years.

Victor (eagle,Idaho)

Hello Terry, I'm a Big fan of yours, how about NASCAR issue each team/driver engraved water bottles so when they mysteriously end up on the track to cause a caution said driver goes to the to the end of the line or a pass through penalty and a fine for the team

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

Thank you. Funny idea, but with all the cameras around the track these days, they usually know who tosses one. However, to my surprise, NASCAR is OK with it. Really? Why? And what's next? A shoe?

Bill (KY)

If I'm a Fortune 500 CEO I'm spending $15- $20 million on ads with Network sports, and not cable TV sports. More exposure. How many sports have their championship on cable TV?

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

The vast majority of homes have cable now Bill. That's not really a deterent to spending ad dollars.

Ron (MD)

Enjoyed the race Sunday night but was a little disappointed to the lack of discussion about the drive Hornish made. Kept it in the top ten most of the night and even brought it back to 13th after the wreck. That was pretty impressive.

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

It was Ron. San has done a remarkable job under tough circumstances. I think Roger is pretty confident they will have the financing in place to run Sam in a third Cup car next year.

Jesse (Huntersville NC)

Are all future vacancies at RCR reserved for the Dillon boys?

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

No, but they both will be there in Cup eventually.

Jesse (Huntersville NC)

Does this leave Ryan Newman with no choice but to stay at SHR?

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

I don't know he has that choice unless sponorship money suddenly appears.

Tom (CT)

Shell made the biggest mistake ever when they said they wanted a champion driver to go to Penske so they ended up with Kurt and Miller gladly took Brad. Now look where its gotten shell.

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

It's easy to look back now and see things didn't go as planned. But it didn't look like an awful decision when they made it.

Saul (San Diego)

Is the start of the chase like the MLB/NLF Playoffs, anyone can win? Or is it different in racing.

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

I think Tony proved last year anyone can win. I gave him zero chance of winning it last year, and frankly, so did Tony. But he caught lightning in a bottle.

Mike (NC)

Why is is so hard for drivers to keep their water bottles in the car? Or throw them out on a pit stop? Yeah, I understand they don't like it rolling around in the car, but they could have something that holds empty bottles.

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

Absolutely no real need to toss them, unless you need a caution and hope it brings one.

Jeremy (Port Angeles, WA)

Do you think Greg Zipadelli just having a conservative setup like what Tony Eury Jr did with Danica in 2010?

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

Zippy just wanted Danica to log laps at Atlanta and learn what she needed to make the car faster. And she did get progressively faster as the race went along.

Jesse (Huntersville NC)

But when has there EVER been a caution flag for a water bottle tossed from a car?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

I seen it happen several times.

scott (denton,tx)

i kinda felt bad for martin truex jr i whated him to win sunday and when jamie hit the wall with 8 laps to go i was so mad cause he had sign a 3 year deal and had high hope for the race to you thoughts on that....

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

Just bad luck, but he ran really well and it should give him confidence heading into the Chase, especially since five Chase tracks are 1.5-mile ovals.

kevin (Orlando,fl)

Think with darian grubb doing so well any chance he stole tony's notes on way out over odd he peaking same time tony did last year and both almost have same number of wins. I smell something fishy

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

He didn't steal the notes. They are his notes.

Tim (Colorado)

How many drivers actually use water bottles? It seems that there are quite a few who use a camel back setup.

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

Wow. You guys are really into this water bottle stuff today. I never have done a survey on how many guys use water bottles. But I don't think it should be legal to toss them on the track.

Frank (Boston)

How impressed are you with what the 88 managed to do Sunday night?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

Solid run consider how far off they were most of the weekend. That bodes well for the Chase. You have to make good days out of races where you don't have a great car, and they did that Sunday.

Danny (LV)

How badly would a guy like Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson dominate a Nationwide or Truck series race?

Terry Blount
  (2:27 PM)

I don't know that they would. It depends on how good their equipment was. But I applaud both of them for not runnig in either series.

Len (NJ)

How impressed have you been with how Rowdy has over come all the adversity this year?

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

I'm impressed at how he has minded his manners for the most part. And even when he was angry (like Watkins Glen) he just walked away rather than saying something stupid.

George (Washington)

Any word on RPM's plans for 2013? Ambrose has been running as good as just about anybody the past month and a half.

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

I think it's all up in the air. Richard is not happy about having to take less money from Ford because Ford is giving a giant pot of gold to Penske. If I had to guess today, I'd say Marcos would be back and Aric woouldn't.

Mack (Spade Racing) (Wilmington DE)

With Penske going to Ford in 2013, any chance they form an alliance with RPM?

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

No. I don't see Roger doing something like that.

Danny McCoy (Las Vegas)

By not being more aggressive on that final restart and rattling Denny Hamlin's cage a little bit, like he said he should have done after the race, did Gordon miss his best chance to lock up a spot in the Chase?

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

Possibly. We'll find out Saturday night. But watching the replay, I don't know Jeff had a lot of chances to punt Denny. Maybe right at the green when he was on Denny's bumper, or possible out of Turn 2 when Jeff elected to go high and might have caught him had Jeff gone low. But I doubt it. I know this, if I'm leading the race on a late restart Saturday, and one of the Chase bubble boys is behind, I know what's coming.

Herb (Nashville)

by not going for the Atlanta win didn't Gordon fail his fans, sponsors and team? he said when the desire to win is gone he would retire.

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

Absolutelty not. Jeff was being a little too hard on himself. He ran a great race.

Herb (Nashville)

Are Mikey, Mark Martin and Vickers gonna share the #55 again next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

That's TBA Herb.

Alan M. (Columbus, Ohio)

Hi Terry. With Smoke losing the Office Depot sponsorship and the loss of Newman's sponsorship, how many cars do you see SHR running next year? If Smoke dares to put Danica in a Cup car over Ryan Newman, my respect for him will be gone...

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

He has no choice on that one Alan. Danica has full sponsorship. Newman doesn't. It ain't personal. It's business.

rob black (rich va)

Do you think brad was trying to get a yellow when he threw the bottle? Looked to me when watching the replay that he was kind of hesitant to toss it and isn't it a known rule among drivers that you only throw bottles under caution on the backstretch?

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

It is water-bottle day on the chat. Never thought I would have a chat that was dominated by water bottle talk. I don't know what Brad was thinking. I just don't think deliberately tossing anything on the track should be allowed.

Alan M. (Columbus, Ohio)

Ah, didn't really take sponsors into consideration on the Danica-Newman thing, but it speaks volumes that experienced and highly qualified drivers can't get sponsorship over Danica - really makes a mockery of the sport in my opinion. I know many will disagree with me though...

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

Drivers have been getting rides on auto racing based on sponsorship for decades Alan. That's nothing new. And there are a lot worse drivers out there than DP. At least she's really racing each week, which is more than I can say for six of seven guys who start every race.

Lyle (Spring, TX)

I heard Ryan Newman say to Marty Smith on ESPN that he might retire and go into broadcasting. Do you think Ryan would make a good pit lane reporter?

Terry Blount
  (2:40 PM)

Ryan isn't retiring. He was a little tongue-in-cheek on that one. I think he could be a decent broadcaster, but it won't be as a pit reporter.

Saul (San Diego)

Can you disguise a water bottle to look like a shoe?

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

Or maybe the other way around sense NASCAR would frown on tossing a shoe, but water-bottle shot-putting is A-OK.

Rose (Metwest)

Even if Kyle makes the chase, past history shows us he does nothing in it.

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

Things change Rose. I wouldn't count him out.

Alan M. (Columbus, Ohio)

How does Burton do such a good job maintaining sponsorship and a full-time ride with the mediocre seasons he has?

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

Because he's a class act, highly respected, incredible bright and sponsors know he represents them in a professional manner.

bigroot (columbia, Ky)

I was really hoping Sam H. would get the 22 ride. I'm fine with joey coming over there, I just wish roger would have gave joey the 3rd team and left sam at the 22 shop.

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

I'm sure Shell/Pennzoil had a say in that decision.

Diego (NC)

As #18 and Rowdy are team leaders at Joe Gibbs Racing, do you expect Matt to be leaning of Rowdy for advice on learning the ways at JGR and who will be Matt's #20 crew chief?

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

I don't think Matt needs any advice from Kyle, but I'm sure they will work together without problems. I don't think the CC issue is settled yet.

rob black (rich va)

will NASCAR penalize a driver and/or team if they wreck someone intentionally for a chase spot. for example if kyle is running 1 spot infront of gordon and neither have a shot at the win and Gordon wrecks kyle knowing he needs to finish 13 spots ahead of him. And isn't it possible to get "loose" on purpose and take a guy out. I hope we don't see any shenanigans this weekend.

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

That's always a judgment call. if it's the last lap for the win, NASCAR likely will let it go. It it's guys battling for 20th, that's much different. But these guys are pros. I don't see them wrecking each other in that fashion.

Laura (Manhattan Beach)

Do you think Gordon would have caught Truex if the caution did not come out?

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

That's a great question Laura that no one seems to be considering. I think Jeff might have gotten close, but I doubt he could have passed him.

Bill (Baily, Mich)

Did Stewart's Bristol meltdown and helment tossing contribute to Office Depot pulling the plug on the #14?

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

Ansolutelty not. That ship already had sailed based on the fact that OD is close to going bankrupt.

Joe (Troy, NY)

I don't want to seem totally out of the loop on the water bottle thing. Was there any confirmation by ANYBODY that it truly was Kes who threw that bottle? I saw the post race interview and he said several times that he didn't have any idea what Harvick was talking about.

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

Brad admitted he threw the bottle, he just didn't understand why Harv thought it caused the caution. It was many laps earlier and NASCAR said aluminum debris caused the caution.

rob black (rich va)

Per jayski, Jason Ratcliffe will remain 20 team CC

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

Good for Jason. I think he will work well with Matt.

Saul (San Diego)

"If a water bottle is thrown in an empty track and no one is around to see it, does it make a sound? Will Happy Harvick know? Will Brad K grin? Will NASCAR Frown? Will Marty Smith Cover the story? Will Terry Blount Tweet the story?

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

Oh Saul. You are the water-bottle guru now.

Alan M. (Columbus, Ohio)

Hi Terry! How much does a sponsorship (on average) make on a Championship car? How much does one make on a start-and-parker (if anything)?

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

The sponsor doesn't make anything. They are paying money to be on the car.

Bill (Baily, Mich)

Why do people seem to be negative about Joey to Penske when Joey has won 2X as many races as Dale since 2009 plus a ton a Nationwide races?

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

Byu 2 times you mean 2 to 1. Not exactly are huge selling point. But plenty of people are critical of Junior.

Alan M. (Columbus, Ohio)

Are there any Vegas lines for the wild card race and who are the odds in favor of?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

JJ was the favorite, but I bet Denny won't be far behind, if at all, if he races well Saturday.

jim (NC)

As a Joey fan, I think he is making a mistake leaving JGR.

Terry Blount
  (2:56 PM)

He doesn't have a choice Jim. There isn't a ride for him there.

Chase (Washington DC)

If Danica wants to run the Indy 500 next year is that something Tony would let her do, and if so how would she go about doing that considering how much time the Indy drivers spend at the track in the weeks leading up to the race?

Terry Blount
  (2:57 PM)

Tony knows the drill on that better than anyone. If she's 25th in the Cup standings at that point, why not do it?

Don (Bakersfield)

Is Harvick regretting his decision to stick with RCR instead of going with Toyota a few years ago?

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

No. You can't look at things that way. He's going to make the Chase and he came close to winning Sunday night. Things could be a lot worse. I think Kevin has a lot of renewed confidence with Gil Martin on the pit box.

Big O (PHX)

Hi Terry. Do you think Kahne has a chance to make noise in the Chase?

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

He could run well, but I wouldn't pick him to win the title.

jim (NC)

He could stay and run a partial cup and full nationwide. Wouldn't he be better off learning?

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

Of course not. No one would do that over a full-time Cup ride. He's been doing this a long time now. It's step to step up and get it done.

Alan M. (Columbus, Ohio)

If JGR runs a 4th Sprint Cup car not next season, but the following, who drives it?

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

They aren't. If they were, Joey would have gotten it.

Allen (Macon, GA)

Rumor around the garage this weekend was the #43 ride may be open. Who lands that seat in 2013?

Terry Blount
  (3:03 PM)

Well, it looks like Newman will be available. And maybe Kurt Busch if Richard is willing to take a risk on the temper issues.

Terry Blount
  (3:05 PM)

Gotta run guys. I hope everyone had a great Labor Day. Saturday night should be a blast to watch. I'm expected some fireworks. Join our race chat if you can. I'm out. Peace.
