Chat with Farrell Evans

Farrell Evans
  (2:58 PM)

Welcome to my Wednesday chat. Let's get started with some Ryder Cup talk.

Ryan (MI)

If tiger wins 1 more event and the fedex cup who gets player of the year tiger or rory

Farrell Evans
  (3:00 PM)

Ryan,I still believe Rory's quality of win at the PGA is enough to beat Tiger out for the POY. But if TW wins the next two events and the playoffs, it's going to be tough to not give a player with five wins the award.

Matt (Denver)

How does the setting of the US Ryder Cup team affect the play of the guys, who were under pressure to make the team, for the next two weeks? What do you expect to see from them?

Farrell Evans
  (3:02 PM)

Good question. These guys are playing for so much money. For many of these guys, it's life changing money. Some of the team will probably go for a few days to Medinah in the off week before the Tour Championship. Generally, I expect them all to use these next two events to stay sharp.

Barbara (FL)

do you think Furyk was the right pick for the RC, or do you think they should have picked Mahan?

Farrell Evans
  (3:04 PM)

Absolutely. Furyk hasn't won this year but he's a great team member and a Ryder Cup veteran. Plus it's not like he hasn't played well this year. He probably should have won the U.S. Open.

Tom (Albany NY)

What is your best tip for not sliding through the zone and getting your hips turning correctly on the down swing?!? Thanks!

Farrell Evans
  (3:10 PM)

Look at Rory McIlroy's golf swing. Rory turns back and through perfectly. Watch how deliberate his on his transition. It's never rushed. To not slide you want to feel some resistance in your hips on your left side on the downswing. Some teaching pros press a club against that left hip during the downswing to help a player feel that tension.

JY (TO )

Hunter is a lock if someone has to withdrawl from the US team, right?

Farrell Evans
  (3:11 PM)

Not necessarily. That's up to Love.

Dan (Kansas City)

Who do you put Z. Johnson with in fourball?

Farrell Evans
  (3:11 PM)

Zach needs to play with one of the longer hitters like Dustin or Bubba.

guest (Palm Beach)

Some are saying that Europe has the edge in the RC.IMO, apart from RM, the Euro players have not been hot since the Open, so USA could dominate Your take

Farrell Evans
  (3:13 PM)

I have said that on paper the Americans are the better team. Westwood, Donald, Garcia, McDowell and Rory are a great group rom Europe, but I would take any five on the other side against them.

Hunter Mahan (not in Medinah)

Can I win the BMW? If so does that put a sting in DL3's side?

Farrell Evans
  (3:15 PM)

Nope. DL3 said in his press conference yesterday that he hoped Hunter played great at the BMW. Hunter was good enough to make the team, but there were four other guys that Love thought were better.

Ed (Long Island)

For the Euro players that aren't in the playoffs, will they head to Medinah earlier for more practice on the course? Looks like all 12 US players will make it to the Tour Championship.

Farrell Evans
  (3:17 PM)

Ed,I don't know if they will. I suspect that they the Europeans not in the Tour championship will get a head start on their preparations at Medinah. But remember it's a team event and things won't really come together for either side until that Monday of Ryder Cup week.

Shoshana (Boston)

Everyone wants to put Phil with Keegan, but Phil - DJ was a colossal failure, Phil has fared best with shorter hitters and paired well with Furyk last year, why not keep them together?

Farrell Evans
  (3:18 PM)

The thinking is that Keegan will be comfortable with a guy that he knows very well.

Ed (Long Island)

Think the guys at FEDEX feel a little slighted now by the RC? 2 great tournaments left with HUGE money at stake, Tiger and Rory head to head, Phil showing signs of life and the only talk now is the Ryder Cup.

Farrell Evans
  (3:19 PM)

No way. The FedEX Cup is everything that it's supposed to be. Big names in contention on Sunday.

Tim (SF)

Hi Farrell - You speak to Spencer Levin at all? He holding up ok? Send him our thoughts from his Cali. home if you would.

Farrell Evans
  (3:21 PM)

Tim,I did talk to Spencer. He is struggling with his golf swing and focus. Thank God for him, his card for next year has been locked up for a long time. Losing his step brother to some unclear circumstances hasn't helped, but Spencer was already struggling before that happened.

Pat (LA)

Farrell, whats in your bag?

Farrell Evans
  (3:22 PM)

Titleist, Callaway, Tour Edge.

Dan (Kansas City)

Who do you expect to sit the most matches for the US squad?

Farrell Evans
  (3:23 PM)

Dan,'Davis won't even know that until the week of the matches, when he can see how the players are playing and what pairings make sense. You have to think that there is no way he would ever bench Tiger or Phil.

Shoshana (Boston)

Does Bill Haas break the streak and become the first fed ex champ to make it back to East Lake?

Farrell Evans
  (3:25 PM)

He's 28th right now. It's going to be tough. There are a couple of guys outside the top 30 like Kevin Stadler, who are playing some great golf right now. They could push him out.

Phil (Ann Arbor)

For the first time since 2009 I feel there is a true #1 in golf. Do you feel that way, too?

Farrell Evans
  (3:27 PM)

Great point, Phil. Definitely. Donald and Westwood were nice space fillers until somebody could step in to fill Tiger's shoes. Rory has done that.

Ed (Long Island)

Any chance this week has the same star power atop the leaderboard as last week? Top 5 last week huge names.

Farrell Evans
  (3:28 PM)

Sergio is back. Rory, Tiger and Phil are playing well. It should be a great leader board.

Chad (Fredericksburg)

Although Tiger didnt win last week, wasnt his weekend performance enough to give him a HUGE boost looking forward??

Farrell Evans
  (3:30 PM)

Chad,TW is a frontrunner. If he wins this week he'll do it by six or seven shots. I just don't see him winning in a close event on a bunched leader board.

Shoshana (Boston)

Rory is many things - one thing I wouldn't call him though is a good putter & especially not a consistent one. When he's on with the putter though - he's really on

Farrell Evans
  (3:32 PM)

Rory isn't the putter that Tiger was in his prime. I remember earlier this year at the Match play watching him miss a ton of short putts for birdie. But he's gaining confidence. He's able to get by through hitting the ball really close to the hole.

Tim (SF)

Bubba wins Masters, takes time off, misses 3 cuts and T~10s and T-20s a bunch with a T2 at Travelers. This just Bubba being Bubba? is consistency ever gonna be his game or is he forever an "any given week" birdie machine + perennial contender at Augusta?

Farrell Evans
  (3:34 PM)

It's interesting. Bubba wants consistency more than anything. He is one of those players that will tell you his goal is to finish in the top 20 every week and get a lot of top 10s. He likes to think of himself as a consistent player. So he's got the right mindset. But his game sometimes doesn't lend itself to consistency. At least, his mental game.

Shoshana (Boston)

Phil sat at last years Pres Cup, with the arthritis issue (and his record) I could see him getting benched

Farrell Evans
  (3:35 PM)

Yeah, I agree. But I think if he wants to play he stays on the course.

Keith H (Seattle)

Farrell, you reminded me of a tagline for Gary Player Golf Co: "If you want to make more putts, you need to hit the ball closer." (Selling iron sets.)

Farrell Evans
  (3:36 PM)

That's it. Pros don't make that many more 20 footers than the average guy. But they make way more 10 footers than we do.

Pat (LA)

for the record, watching Phil and keegan at Riviera, I'm sold they are a perfect match... Is Jeff Overton a horse for the course this week? Like his chances?

Farrell Evans
  (3:37 PM)

Not really. A guy that can hit 320 yardages in the fairway for four days and make a lot of putts is the guy to beat. Dustin Johnson was my horse.

Shoshana (Boston)

Rory was also dead last at the Barclays in putting, but I think iron play and esp wedge play is more important to consistency than putting anyways.

Farrell Evans
  (3:39 PM)

There you go. Hit it close and you don't; have to worry about putting. Also, Rory's short game isn't like otherworldly. It's just ok. With a real clean game, Rory is becoming the Federer of golf.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

When will be the Final PGA Golf Tournament of the 2012 Season?

Farrell Evans
  (3:39 PM)

Disney.

guest (Palm Beach)

Disagree that Phil/Keegan will make good airin. Reason being that Keegan just like DJ will not play his own game but defer too much to phil because of seniority. It is not only about comfort in friendship but how the game is seen

Farrell Evans
  (3:40 PM)

I think Keegan is going to be a nervous, slow wreck, regardless of who he plays with. Keegan needs to play with a guy that will keep him lose. I'm not sure who that might be from this bunch. Kuchar might be able to help him.

Shoshana (Boston)

Is there any concern of burn-out with so many of the guys playing in all the fed ex pt

Farrell Evans
  (3:42 PM)

Not really. They have known the schedule all year. They do have that week off between the BMW and the Tour championship. We'll just have to see.

Dan (Mechanicsburg, PA)

While I agree Rory is the best player in the world at this exact moment, I wouldn't call him a true #1. Tiger could overtake him by the end of the Playoffs. Until we see someone hold #1 for months at a time, I wouldn't call Rory the true #1.

Farrell Evans
  (3:43 PM)

Dan,Rory is a true No. 1 in the sense that he's winning like the heir apparent to Tiger should. He's not just collecting top 10s.

Pat (LA)

Who pairs better with Bubba? Sneds, Webb or Dufner? And who is Dufner's ideal partner?

Farrell Evans
  (3:45 PM)

Duffne will keep the ball in the fairway and let Bubba do his thing. The wrong kind of personality could turn Bubba off. Duffner is not that guy.

Dan (Mechanicsburg, PA)

Good point on Rory winning - I just can't call him #1 when Tiger is still in the mix every week and has the same # of wins as Rory this year. When Rory doubles Tiger's wins in a year, then I'll pass the torch (in my mind).

TO (Chicago)

Who on the American side steps up and leads behind close doors at the RC? I just can never see Tiger doing it...

Farrell Evans
  (3:47 PM)

Love told me yesterday that he thought TW would be an important leader on this team. In the past, I think, Tiger thought it was enough for him to just play well. Now he sees that he needs to be a team leader. But does he give close door speeches? I doubt that seriously. Phil or Zach Johnson might give speeches.

Shoshana (Boston)

I like pairing good approach guys with good putters, I'd be pairing both Keegan and Phil with putter. If it wasn't for the fact that Stricker will be playing with Tiger, I could see Stricker and Keegan (and I've long thought Tiger & Snedecker would be good)

Farrell Evans
  (3:48 PM)

Good point.

Pat (LA)

Overton is really the only one with serious Crooked Stick knowledge. Thats not an advantage over the field?

Farrell Evans
  (3:49 PM)

Not really. It's a big golf course. They play big Pete Dye courses all the time.

Keith H (Seattle)

Re: Tiger vs. Rory. To take a boxing metaphor, the former champion might be a top contender, but the new champion is the new champion.

Farrell Evans
  (3:49 PM)

Nice.

Ed (Long Island)

Which course did the players prefer - Bethpage or Boston?

Farrell Evans
  (3:50 PM)

Boston had more birdies and the greens were perfect. It's a pretty easy choice.

T Foster (Detroit)

Do you think Tiger will tie and surpass Jack's 18 majors?

Farrell Evans
  (3:51 PM)

Yes but Rory isn't going to make Tiger earn all those future majors.

Andrew (WI)

Everyone sort of forgets the run Rory went on last winter-spring where he had something like 10 top 10s in a row. You don't have to win 6 or 7 times to be a consensus #1. Again, Tiger spoiled us in this respect

Farrell Evans
  (3:52 PM)

Yes, TW spoiled us but Rory has the game and the IT factor to give NO. 1 the celebrity and stature it deserves.

Matt (Denver)

Winning score this week?

Farrell Evans
  (3:52 PM)

12 under.

Pat (LA)

Is Mark Wilson in cahoots with Fed Ex? I honestly haven't seen him on a leader board in forever yet he's made it to the BMW

Farrell Evans
  (3:53 PM)

Pat,Mark has been struggling for most of the year, really, since winning early and the good finish at the Match play. He's a good player. I hate he didn't make the Ryder Cup. He lives in the Chicago area.

Ed (Long Island)

I've heard players say in the past that aside from the Majors, the Ryder Cup is the most important victory. Now with the FEDEX $10 million award to the winner, do you think a player would prefer a Ryder Cup win or win the FEDEX Cup?

Farrell Evans
  (3:55 PM)

That's an easy one. They want the FedEx money. Why do you think they would play all these weeks in a row then go to the Ryder Cup? Ryder Cup is something you want to be a part of for your career, but the players know it's an exhibition.

Andrew (WI)

Is Augusta still inviting all 30 who make the tour championship? There always seems to be a guy or two who shouldn't be at Augusta that will get in with a top 5 this week

Farrell Evans
  (3:55 PM)

Yes. Top 30 got into Masters.

Paul (Portland, OR)

Farrell, do you think Dufner will show ANY emotion in the Ryder Cup, or will he keep his typical stoic demeanor?

Farrell Evans
  (3:56 PM)

LOL. i teased him about this the other day in Boston. I don't think so. It's not in him.

Ed (Long Island)

Did Phil ever say when he lost his putting stroke this year? Early in the year he said he was putting the best he ever has, now the claw grip.

Farrell Evans
  (3:57 PM)

It's mental. It's a cliche but certainly true with Phil right now.

Pat (LA)

Is chewing Tobacco legal on the PGA tour? How do greens keepers feel about it?

Farrell Evans
  (3:57 PM)

Yes. I can tell you that the tour would be a different place if guys couldn't chew.

Chris (Chicago)

Farrell - I think you may have been a little out of line saying Tiger CANNOT beat Rory head to head at the Ryder Cup or in a pairing, etc... the times they have been paired together Tiger is -21, Rory -11 oh and Tiger bested Rory 4 out of 5 times. Tiger would handle Rory in the Ryder Cup...

Farrell Evans
  (3:58 PM)

I said he probably couldn't beat him head to head right now, based off their recent play.

Ed (Long Island)

Top 10 finishes this week - more members from the US or EURO RC teams?

Farrell Evans
  (3:58 PM)

US RC team members.

Tiger Woods (FL)

I think I'm still the best golfer in the world. I think I will have more PGA and Major wins than anybody else. That record will not be surpassed by any current golfer. Would you agree?

Farrell Evans
  (3:59 PM)

Yes, Mr. Woods, I agree.

Pat (LA)

Can you elaborate on that? (chewing tobacco)

Farrell Evans
  (4:00 PM)

There are at least 40 to 50 guys who chew tobacco on tour on any given week.

Hunter Mahan (not medinah)

Am I so angry that I make some noise at the BMW this weekend?I can win this and prove DL3 wrong right?

Farrell Evans
  (4:00 PM)

It's too late, H.

Pat (LA)

Can we get some names? so i know who to idolize LOL

Farrell Evans
  (4:01 PM)

Jason Dufner.

Shoshana (Boston)

For all the unflappable Duffner talk, I saw him toss a bunch of clubs this week in Boston (not that I have a problem with that). He just doesn't show much facial emotion :)

Farrell Evans
  (4:02 PM)

Guys, my time is up. Let's talk more Ryder Cup next week, same place, same time. So long.

Shoshana (Boston)

Ollie is playing with Kaymer this week, does he accidentally push him in a lake?

Farrell Evans
  (4:02 PM)

Maybe he should. :) Bye now.
