Sorry a few minutes late. Just landed in Richmond and had to set up. Ready to go just like those wild card drivers are. Fire away.
Which drivers are running a Limited Schedule in the Sprint Cup Series in 2013?
Austin Dillon and Sam Hornish Jr. are the only ones that come to mind. Unless you count start and parkers.
Hey Newt. I think that Logano will have more success with Penske than he did with JGR. The expectations he had coming into the series was way more than most people could handle. I think the change will do him good. Your thoughts? Also, who do you pick for the 2nd WC slot? Thanks!!
I agree. Plus he gets to work with Brad Keselowski. I see some similarities in those two, and you see what he's doing with Penske.
Are you devastated that I'm leaving Gibbs?
Funny. You and Brad K can tweet from every race.
Logano will tear up the Sprint Cup circuit once he goes to Penske, right Newton?
Will be an adjustment period, but I believe the pressure is off to a degree.
Wouldn't it be hilarious if Joey Logano won Richmond and made the Chase after Gibbs replaced him with Kenseth?
I was just discussing that with somebody at the airport. Wonder how Kyle Busch would feel about that if he was bumped by his lame duck teammate?
How many wins do you think Logano will have next year in Cup? And will he make the Chase?
Twenty-two and he'll win the title. C'mon. He won't all of a sudden get a magic car.
when do you think Kurt Busch will announce his plans for next season and where do you think he will race.
Hard to say. I could see him returning to Phoenix Racing, but I don't rule out a wild card with RCR.
with Newman getting his 1 year contract extension what seats are available for Kurt Busch next year...besides the one he is in
Not many good ones. Outside of the one he's in, Furniture Row has talked of going to two cars and they haven't announced an extension with Regan Smith yet, although I'm told they want him back. And there's that wild card I've been talking about at RCR.
Newt, I saw that COTA is selling 3-day parking passes for the USGP at $212 NOT including race tickets that are $1700 and up plus the $5000 seat "license"! Are they trying to price themselves out of business?
I haven't seen that so I really can't comment.
With the reports that Newman and SHR have reached an extension, is that indicative that they might be close to signing a sponsor?
Either that or co-owner Gene Haas has agreed to put Haas Automotive on the car more.
Any news on where Sadler might end up next year?
None other than rumors he is looking at JGR for a Nationwide ride.
Did Almirola bring Smithfield with him to RPM?
Not that I'm aware.
How much money does a start-and-park team earn for a race? And, are they able to cover their expenses based on running those 8 or so laps?
It depends on the race and the track. Go back and look at what some of the last-place finishers have paid out. I can tell you without looking it up that you can make more for start and parking an entire Cup schedule vs. winning the Nationwide Seriess, less the final bonus.
would kyle wreck jeff in turn 4 of last lsp if gordon is leading? would gordon wreck kyle?
Yes and Yes. Kyle told me things would get hairy, so I'll take that as a yes.
Lets say the caution didn't come out last Sunday. Does the 24 catch and pass the 56? He was sure knocking some time off those last green laps before it did come out.
Not enough laps, but Gordon had the faster car at the end.
What is Elliott Sadler up to? Are there any rumblings regarding his affiliation next year?
He told me he is a free agent and has talked a a few teams, but nothing done. JGR in NW is the hot rumor. Sadler wants to get one more shot at Cup, but I just don't see it happening next year.
Is the deal between the 18 and the 2 settled from WG? What about "bottlegate" .. any retaliation coming to BK for that?
If there is, I can't see it until the Chase, and then only if Kyle doesn't make it.
Earlier this year you said two MWR cars would make the Chase. Good call! So which one makes more noise in the Chase, the 15 or 56?
Thanks. That one is tough. Clint has done well in the Chase before, but Truex is running more consistent. It'll be pretty tight between those two in the middle of the Chase.
How would you assess Joey Logano's relationship with Home Depot and do you think that had anything to do with him leaving Gibbs?
He did as well as a 22-year-old can pushing a company whose demographics are targeted at an older, family-related crowd. I think it had more to do with Gibbs wanting to improve the overall depth and challenge Hendrick. And don't forget, Gibbs wanted Joey to stay.
Hey Dave...with Smoke losing the Office Depot sponsorship, any chance (or rumblings) that Mobil 1 might step up to a full-time sponsorship next season? They've been a full-time sponsor in the past, and seem to do a lot of ads/promotions around Tony and their NASCAR involvement.
Nope. They already have said they can't do any ore.
I offered Brad some advice to learn to act if he was going to fib. the other day, but it never showed up. Were the ESPN overlords agraid to post the question to him?
Have no clue. What did he fib about?
Hey Newt, do you think Rowdy, Dave, Toyota and the #18 guys have overcome the mechanical gremlins and bad luck that plagued that team earlier this season?
Can't say for sure, but it would be good news for Busch who usually saves those issues for the Chase.
Great blog about how Brad helped Joey land at Penske! Since Brad was so instrumental in making Joey his teammate do you expect all those Brad fans to become Joey fans and stop all the negativity?
You mean like Dale Jr fans latched on to JJ when they went to the same shop? Heck, I don't know.
Where will David Reutimann drive for in 2013?
1 year extension for Newman at SHR? 1 year isn't exactly a vote of confidence is it? Do you think Haas and Stewart will be running the #39 out of their own pockets?
They couldn't do any more because deals usually are tied to a sponsor and they don't have a long-term deal with a sponsor for that car.
Newt, 30 year old Danica has now run 49 NW and 5 cup races over the last 3 seasons and will be running Sprint Cup full time in '13. Why do you think people continue to say she needs more experience in Nationwide and she's not ready for cup? Could it be because some people just don't like the idea of her being Stewart's teammate?
Because they have seen her struggles in Nationwide and believe more experience will help the maturation to Cup. Personally, I say she's as ready as s he'll ever be.
As a huge Kyle Busch fan we will be rooting for Rowdy to win Richmond and lock #18 into the Chase. Do you think Rowdy will be going for the win or points racing just to beat #24?
Well, he's won four of the last seven Richmond races and has an average finish of I believe less than 3 during that span. If he does that he'll be in position to win. He says he won't knock anybody out of the way on the last lap unless it's Gordon. You do the math.
Are you hearing that Kurt Busch will be going to Michael Waltrip Racing to run the #55 full time next year?
Nope. Mark Martin is a nice guy, but I don't believe he'll give up his contract for 2013.
Are you buying the JGR party line that Home Depot wasn't responsible in any way for the driver change?
Kinda. Sorta. Not entirely.
Dale Junebug really hasn't done much since his June Mich. win. Do you think #88 just delayed his normal summer meltdown by a few weeks?
Wow. Almost 30 minutes in and my first Dale Jr. question. He's not having a meltdown. He had quite a run last week with a car that didn't seem worthy of top 20 at the start of the day. Those are the days that win you a title.
Alright Newt, who's your top 5 this week? And your dark horse?
Hard not to start with Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin since they've won all but one of the last seen or so Richmond races. Plus, Denny is on a roll with two straight wins. After that I'll go with Gordon because he has run well the past two weeks and Hendrick will have that car as ready as it can be. Then I'll go with Keselowski and Greg Biffle. Dark horse.....one last time, Logano.
Hi Newt, after Atlanta I liked how Denny talked about his teammate Rowdy and his Toyota teammates at MWR and wondered why you never hear that kind of spirit of teamwork between the Cheve teams?
You heard it from Denny because he's buddies with Michael Waltrip and Truex to a degree. I wouldn't read a lot into that.
Hey Newt, to you expect Rowdy to take down #24 without too much trouble Sat. night?
I wouldn't go that far.
Hi David, doesn't Kyle Busch deserve to make the Chase because it wouldn't be fair to all the NASCAR fans if there wasn't a Busch Brother at the banquet at Vegas in December?
There you have the most logical statement of the day. Seriously, you want the best drivers in the playoffs, and he's one of the best.
Would we be talking about Dale E with 7 cups had Davey Allison lived? That article brought back some good and not so good memories.
Allison would have made it more difficult for E. He was special. Shame we didn't get to enjoy his full career.
Without wins, will Harvick and Truex start the chase as 12th and 11th, low men in points with all the bonus points wiped out?
No worse than ninth and 10th, although technically they will have the same number of points as the wild cards since wild cards don't get bonus points for wins.
Do you look at Kenseth to Joe Gibbs Racing as an upgrade even though Matt is 40 and do you see Joey going back to the #20 when Kenseth retires?
Short-term, I do. Long-term, if Joey develops into what Mark Martin said many years ago, JGR will miss letting him get away. But right now no doubt Kenseth is far superior. As for the future, my crystal ball is in the shop.
Rowdy ran all 3 Atlanta races and scored 2nd, 7th and 6th. Do you think that proves Rowdy running more truck and NW races helps his cup performance?
Not really. He typically runs well in Trucks and Nationwide, and he's won at Atlanta before.
Kyle has not led a lap at the fall Richmond race the last 3 races. I suspect he won't lead any on Sat night.
You suspect or wishful thinking?
David, as a long-time Jeff Gordon I was really disappointed he went soft on Denny and quit instead of going for the win and Chase spot. If Jeff no longer has the motivation and desire to win, doesn't he owe it to his fans, sponsors and team to retire while he still has some dignity?
First, that was a tough situation. He thought he had the speed to pass without wrecking Denny. Second, he admitted he should have bumped him out of the way. It was on his mind. I don't believe he's gone soft. Third, after talking to Denny I'm not sure Gordon could have gotten on the bumper to push him out of the way.
Newt, since Sadler is fired from RCR and said he doesn't have anything lined up for 2013, where do these rumors about him going to Gibbs come from?
The rumor mill.
Sorry, rumors irk me. Sometimes there's something there, but too many times they get spread to the point people believe them.
Don't get me wrong, Salder is funny and a good media guy but do you think he's really Joe Gibbs Racing material?
Put him in that 18 and he'd win a title. And he's better than Brian Scott.
David,Any word on RPM's driver line up and anything new on Kurt where he might be ?
Nothing new. Petty said something would come out in two to three weeks about two weeks ago. I am pretty sure Ambrose will return. Not so sure on Almirola. And they keep telling me the same thing on Kurt, that sponsors at RPM won't touch him.
DAVID FROM WHAT YOU HAVE SEEN WITH THE 2013 SPRINT CUP CARS,WHICH MFG DO YOU THINK WILL HAVE THE AERODYNAMIC ADVANTAGE BASED ON THE FRONT END OF THE CAR.IT APPEARS THAT ALL THREE HAVE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN THERE LOOKS.iI'M PRETTY SURE THE BACK END IS ALL THE SAME ON ALL THREE MFG. THANKS
Hard to tell because I've just seen them at Martinsville where aero isn't an issue. Not sure any will have a big advantage to be honest. Not the NASCAR way.
What are you hearing on the Elliott Sadler situation? Is he pretty much a shoe-in for Gibbs, or is there a chance he'll end up somewhere else?
Nothing other than Sadler telling me he doesn't have a deal.
Should drivers locked in the chase for 2012 try to go for the win at Richmond
See, here's what I don't get. People act as if drivers don't try to win. When they have a car capable of winning, they all go for it.
is this going to be a replay for Tony this year? So far it looks similar, besides the three wins at the begining of the season.
I really don't see him going on the kind of tear he did a year ago. If he didn't have three wins, he'd be pretty worried now, although remember he was battling for the lead at Bristol when he wrecked there.
Have you heard what the plans for JR Motorsports are for 2013? I would assume Danica will go part-time. Will she still drive for JR Motorsports and split a car with Dale Jr. and other part-timers? Will they try to get another driver for the #7 so they can continue to have two full-time drivers?
Whitt fulltime in 88. IF they can find sponsorship and a driver for a second fulltime car they will do that. Dale Jr and Danica would then run a partial schedule in a third car. If a second fulltime car can't be secured, the tentative plan is for Dale Jr and Danica and maybe another driver to run it for the season.
Wwhy does it cost so much to race
Cars are expensive. Travel is expensive. You have to employ a lot of people.
Get out your crystal ball, Newt: Who manages to grab those coveted wild card spots this Saturday? Does anyone manage to break into the top-10 and knock Stewart out?
Told you it was in the shop. I can see Kahne moving ahead of Stewart, but Stewart is pretty good at Richmond. As for the wild card, hard to pick against Kyle Busch. The numbers don't lie.
How much of step up has it been for #11 team to have Darian Grubb compared to Mike Ford, and how do you rate Denny's chances to seal the deal and potentially win a Cup this season?
I still believe Mike Ford is a top crew chief. He had Denny within one bad fuel-mileage run at Phoenix of a title two years ago. Grubb may be a better overall technician because he's an engineer and Ford is more old school, but in the end it all comes down to chemistry with driver and crew chief.
Wat do u think of logano heading 2 penske nw tht kenseth has officially joined gibbs for nxt season
He couldn't have landed on his feet any better.
What options do you think Briscoe has in the IndyCar series next year? Does he stay with Penske, are there other top tier teams who might be interested?
Not many from what I'm hearing. Not guaranteed he'll be back at Penske.
If you were 6-15th last week (like the 88), why wouldn't you stay out at the last yellow and hope the cars behind you did the same? For those that could only benefit with a win, what do you have to lose?
I was thinking the same thing, but apparently the tire wear was so severe nobody was willing to gamble.
How is the pressure off Logano? He can't win at JGR (2 wins in 4 years while Hamline wins 4 times in one year), and he is going to a team where Brad gets a few wins a year. I would say if he goes through another few years of the same mid pack results, he is done. Dont you agree?
Because from the moment he was placed in the 20 car he was expected to take off and live up to his hype, even though he really was thrown into it a year or two earlier than JGR wanted to. The expecations in the 22 still will be high, but he won't be trying to replace a legend like Tony Stewart. And a few wins for Brad K a year? Are you kidding. Look around and see how many drivers can say they've won six races in the last two years. Brad K is one of the top five drivers in the garage right now. I see the chemistry between him and Logano as nothing but positive.
How likely is it that Brian Vickers will be racing Cup full time next season? He's been on it every time he's been in that #55 car.
Not very. Not room at MWR and nothing else out there that worthy.
What is the word on Elliott Sadler's plans for next year? Must be pretty big for him to leave a Championship ride at RCR.
Or maybe RCR has made it clear he's going to race two grandsons next year and doesn't have room.
The last 2 races with Gil Martin back Kevin Harvick has looked like a new driver and the one from the past 2 seasons. Do you think Harvick can challenge for the title?
He's finished third each of the past two years, and Martin placed a big part in that. You never know. Maybe he'll pull a Stewart this year.
With Penske going to Ford and using off the shelf RFR motors plus Penske's Indy car priority, why does anyone believe that Penske 2013 will be anything but another RPM Roush satelite team?
First, Penske has more money than RPM and Roush put together. I could see Penske becoming the top Ford team to be honest. Off the shelf Roush Yates engines are pretty darn good and it just made economical sense to do that.
Now that Sprint Cup champion Matt will be at JGR, does that make him the defacto team leader?
Denny Hamlin told me he'd gladly let Kenseth accept that role. But in reality, Kenseth leads more by example. I see it as a collaborative effort.
Why did Logano get the 22 ride over Hornish when it seems like Hornish has out performed Logano since filling the seat?
More potential, already a Cup winner and big-time Nationwide Series winner. Bottom line, more talented.
How big a a factor was Stewart's meltdown and helmet tossing in Office Depot's decision to cut SHR loose?
None at all.
Is the rumor that coach is getting rid of Brian Scott true? Hear 3 NW cars. One for Cup guys/up and comers, one for Sadler, and one for Ryan Truex.
I do know that Scott has been shopping himself. We'll wait to see how the rest unfolds, but that would be a great lineup.
Hi David. Is it still raining in Richmond? How long to you think it will take Matt to get up to speed with his new team next year?
Off and on with the rain. And Matt will be up to speed from the get-go. He's pretty good, you know.
Are you hearing that Rowdy will be running Kasey Kahne in some more truck races for KBM?
Haven't heard that, but it wouldn't surprise me.
What are the chances of JR Motorsports taking a chance on AJ for the NNS next year?
Very small. Dale Jr. likes to develop young driver, not rehab those that have been in Cup.
Hey David, I am looking forward to going to Richmond this weekend. IF the full time NW and part time Cup ride is still on the table at JGR,Do you see Sadler or Vickers taking that ride????
Both would be crazy not to take it. Gives them a foot in the door if JGR goes to four Cup teams in 2014.
Did Kyle say if he's waiting for the Chase races to payback the #2 for Watkins Glen?
No, I said if it happens that would be it -- if he doesn't make the Chase.
Isn't it a huge risk for Logano in leaving an organization that brought him up and has a vested interest in him? In my mind it would have made sense for Joey to absolutely try to work out something with JGR. He is young enough where he could have run a partial Cup/FT Nationwide with JGR in 2013 and see where he stands after this. Now he is going to an organization which does not know him. To me it seems like he would have less of a margin for error, because they would expect only good results.
I respectfully disagree. Joey took the best offer out there. He would have been crazy to go back to full Nationwide and part-time Cup with a quality Cup ride like the 22 available.
Do you think NASCAR has to change its financial structure completely, especially in this economy? It seems too dependent on the car sponsors. I am surprised that drivers like Kenseth and Stewart (next year) had/have to look for sponsors.
They've tweaked a few things, but the sport has depended on sponsors for a long time and it's hard to picture that going away. They've rebuked the idea of franchising, and that would be the area I'd say the sport needs to look at.
Do you think there will be a NASCAR race at the new Circuit of the Americas?
Not next year.
That's it for me. I have to get checked into the hotel and over to the track to talk to all the wild card drivers. As usual, it was a blast.
