Chat with Sean Adams

BB (Waco, TX)

I think I read that you were at the Baylor game last week right? Can Baylor beat Oklahoma and Texas again?

Sean Adams
  (12:02 PM)

They can. I'm still not seeing from Baylor what I want to see on defense, but their offense puts a lot of stress on the opposing defense, so they can win that way. But they have to shore up their defense if they expect win big games consistently.

Corey (Abilene, TX)

First, I went to college with you and it's good to see you doing well. Congrats! Secondly, what happens with Texas Tech over the next couple of years and how long will Tubbs be here?

Sean Adams
  (12:04 PM)

Thanks! I don't think anybody knows what's going to happen with Texas Tech. Tommy Tuberville told me at Big 12 media day that he liked the team he has in 2012 and he is happy to have coordinators that he's always wanted to have. Texas Tech can score, but much like Baylor, they have to shore up their defense if they expect to win big.

Will (Plano, TX)

How does Missouri and Texas A&M do this weekend and which of the two will be a better program five years from now?

Sean Adams
  (12:06 PM)

Missouri and Texas A&M can win this weekend. Both games are too close for me to call. Texas A

Steve (The Woodlands)

Will the TCU game always be on Thanksgiving?

Sean Adams
  (12:07 PM)

I don't believe the TCU game will always be on Thanksgiving. My hunch (based on nothing) is that Texas will always play on Thanksgiving, but I don't know that the opponent will always consistently be one school

Lake (Chicago)

Should a team that can win the big 12 have to use trick plays against Wyoming? That makes me worry.

Sean Adams
  (12:08 PM)

No, they shouldn't. But under Bryan Harsin this is his way of operating. He wants to set you up thinking one thing and set up his team for big plays because he played to his tendencies.

Dillon (Austin, TX)

What are your thoughts on the apparent injury to RSJ last night on ESPN?

Sean Adams
  (12:11 PM)

It's tough to see any kid go down with an injury. I've had a number of knee operations and in these cases you hope their resolve is strong and they can get back as soon as possible. We don't have a diagnosis yet. You just hope he can recover and return to full athleticism.

Dillon (Austin, TX)

What will be the yardage breakdown between passing and running against New Mexico?

Sean Adams
  (12:12 PM)

I think Texas will run for 300 yards and Texas will pass for 250. I think they will reach 600 yards in total offense, but I struggle to give the passing game 300 yards. I don't know where the last 50 yards comes from.

Jason (Austin)

With Texas having a three headed monster in the backfield do you see them bringing out the wish bone any time soon

Sean Adams
  (12:13 PM)

No. There will be formations and packages that will take advantage of all three great running backs. I can't imagine a scenario where all three would be on the field at the same time.

Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)

Dear SeanWill Texas play Nebraska this season?

Sean Adams
  (12:15 PM)

The only way would be in a bowl game or the BCS Championship.

Clutch the Dutch (Houston)

Is the Longhorns' "elite" defense overrated? Seventeen points to Wyoming?

Sean Adams
  (12:17 PM)

No, Wyoming could win 10 games this year. Also, defenses many times struggle in the opener (maybe except Alabama). They don't tackle well, because they don't tackle much in practice. Expect to see a better Longhorn defense going forward.

Austin (Texas)

Is it safe to say at some point this year the coaches will have no choice but to let the young receivers play more. What have you heard?

Sean Adams
  (12:19 PM)

The young receivers will play more when they earn the playing time. Jaxon Shipley, Mike Davis and Marquise Goodwin all played OK in Game 1. I don't see any reason for them to be replaced. Kendall Sanders got playing time. He and Marcus Johnson will show themselves over time.

Connor (Dallas/Tx)

Oklahoma State vs Arizona who you got? Also do you think Ash will be able to connect with some of his deep balls vs New Mexico?

Sean Adams
  (12:22 PM)

I'll take Oklahoma State over Arizona. Oklahoma State has a really good defense and an offense that will get better under freshman quarterback under Wes Luntz. RichRod has a lot of work to do at Arizona. He'll get Arizona better, but they're not better right now.As for Ash, yes I do think he will connect. He held the ball too long a couple of times, and that is sometimes a symptom of early season issues as well. The quarterback is not used to getting hit and a lot of pass rush, because they don't get hit in practice.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Do you think Jerry Jones should have rotated the opponents for the Hogs in the Southwest Classic to include all the relevent conference OGs now that Arkansas and TAMU are in the same conference?

Sean Adams
  (12:24 PM)

I don't think so, because Texas A&M is trying to establish themselves in Dallas once a year like Texas does when they play Oklahoma. I believe this game is equal parts Texas A

Tony (Richmond, CA)

How does the injury to RSJ's kneecap affect his recruitment? Will the Horns pursue other prospects more vigorously now to protect themselves and ensure depth at the postion?

Sean Adams
  (12:25 PM)

Ricky Seals-Jones will receive no less recruitment from anybody. The University of Texas included.

John (Austin)

Will Gray get 10+ carries this week? And don't you think the trick plays early in the season are about forcing teams on their schedule to have to plan for something else?

Sean Adams
  (12:27 PM)

Yes, I think Gray gets upwards of 15 carries this week. ... As for the trick plays, yes it does. Putting trick plays on film forces defense to dilute their practice time.

Dante (Kansas City)

what are your predictions for Texas/NM this weekend?

Sean Adams
  (12:29 PM)

My prediction is 52-13. With New Mexico running the option and Texas having to play assignment football, it's not out of the realm of possibility that one big play bursts into the open.

Justin (lakenheath england)

What do you think about Oklahoma's issues in the first game of the season?

Sean Adams
  (12:32 PM)

Every team has issues early in the season. Texas has issues, and I believe those can be fixed. Oklahoma has issues on the offensive line that aren't so easy to fix. Their offensive staff will have to call plays with the understanding of the deficiencies of their offensive line.

Justin (lakenheath england)

Do you think we'll see either Brewer or Overstreet in any of these first 3 games?

Sean Adams
  (12:33 PM)

No. David Ash is the starting quarterback and needs as many reps as possible. Any reps outside of Ash will go to Case McCoy.

Sean Adams 2.0 (Sean Adams' office)

Do you think the Loghorns productiveness with DJ and other WR packages will keep Johnathan Gray from getting his carries?

Sean Adams
  (12:36 PM)

No, I don't. Mack Brown has expressed over and over again his desire for Malcolm Brown, Joe Bergeron and Johnathan Gray to be in the 15-carry per game range. I believe that's going to be his desire going forward.

Derrin (Plano, TX)

How critical is the 2012 season to the long term future of Rick Barnes in Austin?

Sean Adams
  (12:37 PM)

Rick Barnes is fine in Austin and will be fine in Austin. I believe it will take a collection of bad seasons in order for the University of Texas to make a move on Rick Barnes.

Josh (Birmingham AL )

Does A&M moving to the SEC effect recruiting for Texas?

Sean Adams
  (12:39 PM)

It doesn't. If Texas A&M wins head-to-head battles over the University of Texas, it will be for one or two players a year. Texas A

Jay (Austin)

Is Oklahoma overrated being in the top 10 after what we saw in week 1 or was that just week one issues typical of any team. (except Alabama).

Sean Adams
  (12:42 PM)

I thought Oklahoma was overrated at No. 4 before the season started. Bob Stoops told me at Big 12 media day that this would be his best offensive line since 2008. After he made that statement, he lost two starters who each had over 30 starts. The team is not the same as we thought it would be early in the summer. I would put Oklahoma somewhere between 13 and 18 if I was ranking them.

Mason (Auburn, Al)

When Bergeron's career is over, who will have been a better short down back. Cody Johnson or Joe bergeron?

Sean Adams
  (12:44 PM)

Joe Bergeron, because he does have the ability to break the short burst into a long run like he did against Wyoming. His ability to run through tackles is really good.

John John (Texas)

How did Ole Miss end up on the schedule?

Sean Adams
  (12:56 PM)

The University of Texas brass is always looking for good BCS-level opponents that will be good travel destinations for their fanbase. And everybody is looking forward to going to The Grove. I am.

Jay (Gainesville, Fla.)

What do you think of the Aggies' defense? Can it stand up to SEC offenses?

Sean Adams
  (12:57 PM)

I don't believe Texas A&M currently has an SEC-level defense. I believe they have an SEC-level offensive line. But up front, on the defensive side of the line is where they are lacking.

Justin (lakenheath england)

Every year there seams to be 1 sleeper team that comes out to suprise everyone who do you think that'll be this year. Also who do you think will be in the National Championship this year if you had to guess

Sean Adams
  (12:58 PM)

If I had to guess right now, it'd be USC vs. Alabama. And my surprise team would be Ohio State. I think OSU wins the Big Ten. I know they're not eligible for a bowl, but I think the Buckeyes are going to play better than everybody expects.

Sean Adams
  (12:59 PM)

Thanks for all the great questions, and I'll talk to you guys next week.
