'Sup kids? Happy Week 1! This is my normal chatting time for football season... learn it, love it, obsess over it. Let's get to it - as always, all subjects answered but we'll focus primarily on football and nonsense
If I have Robert Turbin as a backup option to Marshawn Lynch, is it too early to rename my team "The Shroud of Turbin"?
I'll allow it
Hellloooooo would u start Foster with the word of an injury?
if I had to set my line-up today... yes. But obviously, tune into Fantasy Football Now 11am ET on ESPN2 (cheap plug, company man) to find out for sure if he's active. But as of now, I'm not worried.
Head scratching pick two: Trent, Lynch, Turbin, Ingram, Tate
Go Skins indeed. Answering this one just to say I'm not answering questions like this one that can be answered by my rankings: http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/football/ffl/story?page=12ranksWeek1RBDifferent scoring, flex, fine - but same position, standard scoring... check the ranks my friend. HTTR!
Love the Fantasy Focus Podcast (Football and Baseball!) After last night, pick your combo: Murray/Nicks or your-boy Harvin/Jamaal Charles?
Harvin / Charles. Less risk of injury, actually.
I have the first pick off waivers, should i believe the hype after ogletrees game and pick him up? I could only lose Kenny Britt to do it.
I'd rather have the upside of Britt than Ogletree. So in your case, no. That said - I buy Ogletree more than most. Solid WR3 type I think - keep in mind good chance Dez & Miles don't play all 16 games. So that upside combined with what we saw and knowing Romo likes the slot guy ala Laurent...worth a grab
I am torn on who start at Flex. Kevin Smith, Eric Decker or Donald Brown. Who has the best chance to succeed this week?
Smith has best chance - highest ceiling, Decker safest
With the recent positive news on Rashard Mendenhall I'm thinking of claiming him off waivers and dumping Ryan Williams. Is this a good move?
Yes and no. I remaind enamored with Williams and he's only got Beanie to deal with, Mendy has Redman/Dwyer and health to battle. So I wouldn't in your case as RW has clearer path to PT. That said, yes, Mendenhall needs to be owned in every league for second half of year
Hi TMR, regarding your question from a few years ago that I can't stop thinking about... I saw Vicki Christina Barcelona... the answer is... SJ !!
I have no idea what you are talking about but the randomness of this made me laugh
Because of bad weather my airplane had to turn around just before its destination and fly back to its original airport. On the way back the draft in my highly competitive league with players from all over the wold (We studied together in Australia) took place and I was autodrafted. I ended up with a horrible team, but I got Rodgers and Vick. I have two questions on the same subject: a) Which one would you start this week? Rodgers is safe but I really like Vicks upside this week. and b) Should I trade one of them now or bank on Vick putting up big numbers and get more value for him in a few weeks when someones starting QB gets injured?Sincerly,Martin
Would test waters on Vick now. But unless you get a top 20 player (someone that was drafted in first 2 rounds) I would wait and roll the dice that he blows up the next few weeks.
Who should I start? Somebody higher in your rankings? Or someone lower? (Yes this is a plug for your rankings and a hope that people will stop asking those questions and a shameless way to get posted)
hello talented Mr. Roto. i have an intriguing question. In a flex position is it safer to role with someone proven like Antonio Brown (somewhat proven) or go with a running back like Doug Martin, a rookie, or Law firm, first time in a starting gig.
Depends on rest of your team, your scoring and how risk averse you are. Brown the safest, Martin more upside. I'd probably go Brown until we know for sure what Martin's role is. That said - I really like Martin this week too.
Any chance Randy Moss has a break out game against Packers this week? He has always played very well against them
yep. 13 TD in 14 career game. Nice lottery ticket
Why do you think I am going to do so much better than Andrew Luck this week (14v19 in your rankings)? I know I am awesome, but what is everyone else missing?
AZ secondary vs Chicago's, ruhsing yards from Wilson.
Ben Tate going to get a bump in your rankings with the news that Arian Foster "tweaked" his knee in practice?
yep. Also the idea that HOU gets up big in this game and uses Tate more in second half
You have DHB 2 spots ahead of titus, but you went off on how good titus will be on the podcast: Who you starting in a ppr? start both, and leave Ingram on the bench?
Would start DHB in a PPR. Like Young's potential for big play but DHB will very likely get more targets and rec
Mr Berry, do you enjoy watching games at the bar with some drinks and a nice loud atmosphere.....or at the house where you can actually here whats going on??
Depends on the game. Many times I just like being alone at home. But I watch most of the Sun games in the "War Room" with a lot of other ESPN talent and producers. About 30 people and that's a lot of fun. Very loud, there's a pretty intense 16 team league we have among some of the folks that sit in there... so that's the most fun for me. Lotta jokes.
If Foster were not to play, does Tate automatically become a must-start?
Tate would be top 10 for me if Foster were ruled out.
Will you be on The League again? Would you use your #1 waiver wire spot to pick up Jake Locker (Gabbert backup now) or save it for Ogletree having a pretty solid WR lineup already?
Ogletree. He has much more upside for you than a back-up QB.
Sorry to sneak in a Baseball Question.. In a Points League and in the playoffs.. Would you start a 1 start pitcher like Shields, Miley or Moore or go with a riskier 2 start pitcher like Kendrick, J. Garcia and Villenueva.. Thanks!
In general, in a points league, I prefer the 2 start pitcher. Depends on exact pitchers, match-up and scoring system but points lg more forgiving of one bad start
Hi TMR, regarding that night when...I am Cesar Chavez, no doubt. And the dog said what?...!!
I've never seen this movie. Is this making sense to anyone?
My internet connection is crappy and I have to manually refresh the page while @ my little cubicle. Think I could get a call on either Maclin or Hillis (I have J. Charles) in the flex this week? Thanks brother.
Maclin. Really like Hillis and think he'll get a decent amount of work - ATL good run D however and I like PHI vs CLE this week - expecting lots of fantasy goodness
Follow up to Terry's question that you didn't answer:How do you (on your teams) decide between two injury risks playing at different times? How do pick between T-Rich, playing a limited role in the morning game, and Lynch, playing an unknown role in the afternoon game?
Depends on exactl situation. Right now, I'm expecting Lynch to play. We'll see how he prctices today and how he responds on Sat... But in general I stay safe. So if Lynch were a game time decision and Richardson were active, I'd roll the dice with TR instead of hoping Lynch goes. No easy answer but in general I like to be as safe as possible
Pick one for PPR Flex this week - S Ridley, P Hillis or S Johnson (hammy & Revis Island)?
I take it you believe Percy Harvin's migrane problems are behind him?
Dude was the 8th highest scoring WR last year!
I know you love Nate Washington this wk, but would you play him over Hillis at flex?
I would, yes
Garcon or Law Firm at flex?
Greetings from England! Mike Wallace > Antonio Brown. I think people are seriously underestimating Wallace. He's playing for a new contract, he's an elite talent, and he's playing with a QB who can throw the ball downfield.
Was playing for a new deal last year, too. No doubt he is talented but once Brown emerged, the numbers don't back up your story. Brown was better, more targeted, etc etc. We'll see but your argument is more faith based. Stats (and PIT front office - they paid Brown) say Brown
I think you went all in on the Cowboys a year early
One game, brother. One game. We'll see.
my buddy had a great idea for the man's league criteria, but told me about it too late to suggest it: as this is an election year, listeners should have to make campaign videos for you and nate running for biggest weasel - an election that neither of you wants to win! say we do still do this and you get a chuckle, any chance there's a spot in next year's mans league (assuming there is one)??
Funny idea. Depends on quality of video. No promises.
Flex Spot: A Brown or Garcon? .5 PPR
Nate is a weasel
Does your updated week 1 ranking for BJGE reflect Bernard Scott being out? If not, where would Law Firm fall, now?
Yes. My rank of him is more about BALT D than expected amount of touches
Am I the answer to the celebrity question? (That was the point of the Vicki Christina comments I believe.)
Ah. No, not the "actress" from a few years ago nor the "celebrity" from the podcast a few weeks ago.
Number 1 player in fantasy right now? Kevin Ogletree! Where were you on that one Berry?
I know. Only thing dumber is being in a chat hosted by a guy who missed it.
Who's a better Turner handcuff - Rodgers or Snelling?
I like Rodgers more. Both would get run but like Rodgers upside more
Do you see Donald Brown putting up many fantasy points vs. the Bears D?
Many? NO. But he's a good pass catcher and I could see him getting a lot of dump offs this week vs CHI, especially when the deep stuff is taken away
I know all ESPN guys are experts (notice no quotes, no sarcasm) but is there a guy that everyone just says, man he knows fantasy football? I guess as much as anyone can "know" fantasy football.
Well, outside of the fantasy analysts, all of whom I think do good work, I will tell you that Tim Hasselbeck is strong as is the analysts that are in the 16 tm league we talk about. All are good players - Mort, Schefter, Trent, Schlereth - Tedy Bruschi isn't in the lesague but he plays in like 3 leagues - he's really good.
First year doing IDP. Any advice?
Read Jim McCormick.
PPR- Who has the most upside thi syear? Amendola or Crabtree?
Hi Matt! Love your work on ESPN :-) :-)! Would you drop Alfred Morris for Isaac Redman?
No. Both poor situations but believe it or not, I think there is a chance Morris is the starter for WAS and has value in multiple games. Mendy will be the guy in PIT, just a matter of time. And PIT is gonna be pass first with Haley I believe
TR, regarding your statement that Superman II as the only sequel better than the first movie....Aliens is much better than Alien...c'mon now
Never saw Aliens but fair - I've since amended that statement. Terminator 2 better than first one, the 2nd Batman with Heath ledger better than first... there's a few examples.
Lion's RB's are cursed,...but does Leshoure have the best chance at Fantasy stardom this year?
Well, Smith does if he can stay healthy (I don't think he can) but he'll get first shot. Leshoure not a bad lottery ticket tho
I'm sure you get this all the time, but are you any relation to Halle Berry? She is so fine! Thanks for your chat and all your fantasy help.
I do. And yes, she is my twin sister.
Who is the player most likely to carry their pre-season hype/success into the regular season?
Great question. Torrey Smith for me.
Could you conceivably start Foster AND Tate...other option would be Green-Ellis
I'd do that, yeah
On a scale of 1-10, how accurate was that John Clayton commercial?
Can you ask Pedro Alvarez if he'd rather have Ryan Fitzpatrick or Sam Bradford as backup QB where upside is the main concern.
Aye, it's a Ryan Fitzpatrick, okaay?
DUDE! What's your take on Benson?
Flex type. GB was bottom 10 in rush att last yr and only had 12 rush TD's. 7 of those 12 were either Rodgers or Kuhn... so not a ton of work for Benson. But solid RB, will be on field for all 3 downs mostly, will catch more balls than you think... flex.
LOVE Empire. Not better than the original. Remember, I saw the first one when I was 8. Can't argue with a wide eyed 8 year old.
I've based a team primarily on your advice, drafting strategy and rankings. I think this will be a fun season. Ogletree over (your Deeply Loved) Amendola?
Think I'd rather stick with Amedola - at least see how he does this weekend. Also want to see Steve Smith / Rams - could very easily be a fantasy zombie like Ogletree...
Tate, Hernandez, Freeman or Palmer at OP spot?
Freeman. Always go QB at OP if you can
Be 100% honest. Have you ever rooted for a player to get injured so your guy can shine in fantasy? Don't feel bad. I'm rooting for Fred Jackson to get banged up so CJ Spiller can play.
Never. I know too many athletes. It's easy to not think of them as actual people because we see them on TV but man... if you heard the Jamaal Charles interview we did after his injury... It's just too real to these guys who know they have a very short shelf life and one injury is the difference between getting cut and making millions... it's too tough.
someone dropped meachem for ogletree. should i drop david wilson to pick up meachem? I have Dez, A Brown, T young, and K britt as my other WRs
No. Wilson will be back. I'm not a Meachem fan
Breakin' II: Electric Boogaloo. *Drops mic*
You've never seen the first Breakin. No one has.
Godfather II is hands down the best sequel. BTW, just wanted to thank you for entertaining us year in and year out. Avid listener of the podcast as well.
Thanks. GF2 easily could be best sequel but that's not the question. It's not better than orginal GF.
Star Wars when you were 8... that movie came out in 1977, that means your......
I'm 42. Born in 69.
who do you like for the entire season...Ogltree or Lafell??
Wanna see LaFell play this weekend first. Still LaFell I think
If we polled all the other ESPN experts about who's the true guru, would they pick you? You seem to be the face of fantasy these days (and yes, it's a nice punim).
Among the fantaysy guys I suspect they would either choose themselves or decline. We all get along so you wouldn't get a very fun answer from any of us. If you polled non fantasy folks at ESPN, I suspect you'd get a response similar to if you asked general public. Some would say me, some would say Harris, some Karabell, Mass, Cockroft... all personal preference.
Ok gang. Gotta run. Thanks for stopping by! I'll try to answer more questions on Twitter and Facebook. Good luck this weekend!
