Chat with Dan Graziano

Dan Graziano
  (12:00 PM)

Let's get to it, people.

Rick (Charlotte)

Dan, It seems everone is commenting that Vick passed too much on Sunday and that they did not run Shady McCoy enough. However, McCoy had 26 touches (20 rush and 6 pass). Isn't between 25-30 touches a good amount for McCoy? I think losing him would be bigger than losing Vick.

Dan Graziano
  (12:01 PM)

Not sure I agree with the last thing you said there, Rick, but your point in general is a good one about McCoy's workload, and yours is the best explanation I've seen yet for why they didn't run it more. However, there are other backs on the roster. Cleveland is not good at stopping the run. You can certainly make the case they should have called more running plays in general, even if they were plays for Bryce Brown or Chris Polk.

Teon (Richmond, VA)

Would you say Eagles problem did have some thing to do with Vick but his offensive line was not good?

Dan Graziano
  (12:02 PM)

When I watched the game, I thought it looked as though the line gave him enough time in general. He's got to get rid of the ball more quickly.

Simple (Home)

Dan, are you going to do your weekly All NFC East Team again this year? I really enjoyed that last season.

Dan Graziano
  (12:02 PM)

Yes. Tomorrow.

Mike B. (Dunellen, NJ)

Giants looked flat coming off SB with home opener. Are they too confident in their ability to make comebacks late in the game/season that they struggle early?

Dan Graziano
  (12:03 PM)

No, I don't think the Giants play poorly early in games on purpose. I think they'd rather not have to come back at the end every week if they could avoid it. Their issues are real right now, and they're depth issues in the secondary, on the offensive and defensive lines, at receiver, maybe at running back. Some folks need to establish themselves.

Veder (VA)

Dan,A great win for the Redskins - but one of the few downsides was Brandon Banks putting the ball on the ground 2 times again. He made the team ostensibly as both a returner and WR, but how long before Shanahan tries someone else back there? I know Aldrick Robinson has had his own fumbling issues.

Dan Graziano
  (12:05 PM)

Whatever else they say, I have to believe Banks made the team because they couldn't convince themselves they had a better option in the return game. Once they do find that, unless he's really improved in those areas you cite, he's got to be gone, I'd think.

toodlum (center of the universe-Texas)

Will you make up a midseason top 20, or adjust it weekly?

Dan Graziano
  (12:05 PM)

The Top 20 was a fun offseason exercise. I'd say I'll do it again next year, but people got a little too obsessive about it. So we'll see.

John (NYC)

Do you think Nicks has a huge bounce back game given he has a week and a half to rest his toe? This coming from a giants fan and a nicks fantasy owner...

Dan Graziano
  (12:06 PM)

Yeah, I have no concerns about Nicks. If you were in my league, I'd be trying to acquire him from you.

Tavis (College Station, TX)

Is a backward pass considered rushing yards or passing yards? Say Andre Johnson catches a screen pass thrown backwards and gains 15 yards. Would it be considered passing or rushing yards?

Dan Graziano
  (12:06 PM)

Rushing.

Ivan (Texas)

If you had to choose, would you feel more comfortable with Cook or Costa at center for the Cowboys?

Dan Graziano
  (12:07 PM)

Cook, I guess, because he's more experienced. But remember, the Cowboys are trying to develop guys at certain spots, and that's one of them.

David (Hillsdale)

Do you have the eagles ahead of the giants? The giants did not play well, made some mistakes, and knew how to stop a slant, would have probably tied up the game and won. On the other hand, if everyone is relying on Vick, Philly is going no where.

Dan Graziano
  (12:07 PM)

I have the Giants ahead of the Eagles on my Power Rankings ballot this week.

Tito (Ashburn Va)

Dan, how do you feel about the Giants RB situation? Does David Wilson have what it takes to bounce back after the poor week 1 game..

Dan Graziano
  (12:08 PM)

I do not know. He had a reputation as a fumbler in college.

joseph (north carolina)

better fantasy starter for week 2, kevin ogletree or alfred morris

Dan Graziano
  (12:08 PM)

Oh, Morris, for sure. Assuming he gets another start. You have to be prepared for Shanahan to pull the rug out from under you.

Kenny (Baltimore, MD)

Hey Dan. Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. My questions is related to the Redskins defensive backfield. They have been labeled a severe weakness of the team since day 1. But they looked pretty good to me on Sunday. Do you think, even with the injuries and suspensions, maybe we are underestimating how talented that group is?

Dan Graziano
  (12:09 PM)

Maybe, and they did play well, especially in man coverage, which was a surprise to me. I will say this: The Saints don't have any real big burner types at wide receiver. But yes, the Redskins' DBs covered very well Sunday.

rob (va )

garretts play calling week one good or so so?

Dan Graziano
  (12:10 PM)

To me the issue is the speed with which the calls are getting in. Still seems frantic to me as the play clock ticks down. I think Romo helps cover up a lot of other people's deficiencies.

Joey Cali [via mobile]

Talking about lack of depth, logged like the cowboys proved you a bit wrong. Costa goes down, Cook goes in. I'm sure the soon to be division champ Giants wish they had better depth in the backfield huh?

Dan Graziano
  (12:10 PM)

One game, Joey. One game. Lack of depth shows up over the course of a season.

Chadi (NYC)

Because of the Giants' injury depleted secondary, do you see the couching staff getting Jayron Hosley more involved, possibly as the #3 corner? Tyron and Coe didn't look to good on Wednesday....

Dan Graziano
  (12:11 PM)

I believe they want to use Hosley as the slot corner, which is where he played almost exclusively in the first game.

Jeff Kline (Virginia Beach)

If Will Beatty comes back this week (I dont know why as Giants fans we think he is a savior), does that relegate David Diehl to the bench. I liked Lockear in the RT posistion. Diehl is a huge liability at this point. Why do the Giants stick with him?? I know he is versatile, but geez, he is going to get Eli crushed!

Dan Graziano
  (12:12 PM)

I believe Diehl is their starter at right tackle, and they like him there.

Gilmer (Richmond)

You had 'Skins ranked 19th last week in power rankings, what about this week?

Dan Graziano
  (12:12 PM)

They should be out any minute. But I'll give you a spoiler: The Redskins moved up farther than any other team in the poll this week.

Erik (IL)

But to Joey's point, Giants don't really have good depth in their secondary correct?

Dan Graziano
  (12:12 PM)

No, the injuries have depleted their depth. That is true.

BigBlueviator (RVA)

Give em credit. Redkins had the most impressive win of the weekend, did they not?

Dan Graziano
  (12:13 PM)

I think so, considering what a brutal place the Superdome is to play, historically. Cowboys' win at NY was very impressive as well, but the Saints' home-field advantage, against a rookie QB... to me that's the biggest upset win of the week.

DLloyd (Arlington (VA))

Redskins Oline allowed only 1 sack (and that was on Griffin and Morris' feet) and blocked for a 150 yard day. Could it be said that the worries about the Oline are overblown (at least while starters are in)?

Dan Graziano
  (12:14 PM)

I mean, it's a little bit tougher to "allow sacks" when the first thing the QB does on every play is sprint way out to the right or left of the pocket. The Redskins will continue to use Griffin's legs to help thema alleviate the concerns they have about their line.

Eric (DC)

Rex Grossman didn't even dress this week, as Shanahan named Kirk Cousins the backup. Chances Grossman lasts the full season with the Skins. Any trade value there? Chances Chris Cooley gets resigned with Rex's roster spot vacated?

Dan Graziano
  (12:15 PM)

No, I think they'll keep three QBs, and they like having Rex around as a tutor for the young guys, since he knows the offense so well. But I did find it interesting that they think enough of Cousins already that he was the Week 1 backup.

Steve (Bristol)

Is there any way to really defend Jimmy Graham with a perfect pass from Brees? I mean, fletcher and a DB were in front and behind him on the TD. Thoughts? LBs for the skins did a pretty good job dropping back and covering.

Dan Graziano
  (12:15 PM)

The coverage on that play could not have been better. It's like you said -- the best TE and maybe the best QB in the league making a two-way perfect play. Nothing you could do about it.

Morgan (Washington DC)

I'm an Eagles fan, and extremely worried / pessimistic about our chances with Vick. If Sunday came out of nowhere, that would be one thing, but his performance was kind of an extension of last year (and the end of 2010). Isn't it possible, or even likely, that despite his best efforts to study more, and spend time in the film room, he just doesn't have the natural affinity needed to understand complex schemes and defenses, and he's just not a very good NFL QB?

Dan Graziano
  (12:16 PM)

Yes. That is possible.

Gregg (Philly)

2 mins to play with the game on the line, which NFCE offense and which defense would you take?

Dan Graziano
  (12:18 PM)

Have to say Giants both ways, right? Who else has shown more ability to play huge in those spots?

Steve (Troy, NY)

What!!! How do you leave RGIII off the rising list?Com' on MAN!!!

Dan Graziano
  (12:19 PM)

I feel pretty confident that I've not given RG3 short shrift in my coverage since Sunday. Someone else's turn.

Ray Finkle (Miami)

The Giants (0-1) better not be ahead of the Eagles (1-0) in the Power Rankings. That is like putting the 2008 Lions ahead of the 1972 Dolphins. Shame on you Dan. Shame on you.

Dan Graziano
  (12:19 PM)

By that logic, they should be no higher than 16th, right? Behind every team that's 1-0? I don't think we're supposed to base them off of only one game.

Gregg (Philly)

If you were basing on the teams play this past week?

Dan Graziano
  (12:20 PM)

The Power Rankings, you mean? I'd go Cowboys, Redskins, Eagles, Giants.

Justin (Monterey)

did tony romo look like a different qb pre-snap? it seemed his audibles were peyton manning-ish.

Dan Graziano
  (12:21 PM)

I thought he looked the same as he always does. But I guess since they beat the Giants, he looked different to some people.

Dave K. (Washington, D.C.)

Rank the NFCe QBs' week 1 performances.

Dan Graziano
  (12:21 PM)

All-Division team will come out tomorrow. No spoilers.

CR (CT)

I'm a 'Skins fan but with all due respect to Messrs. Brees and Graham, Brady and Gronk are quite possibly the best at their respective positions.

Dan Graziano
  (12:22 PM)

I'll take Graham over Gronk, actually, and I'd take Brady over Brees. But both are close calls.

st8prop (Atlanta, GA)

Dan...after the opening day loss to the Cowboys, who you expect to play better or play more to make the Giants good enough to defend their title?

Dan Graziano
  (12:23 PM)

I think Tuck and Umenyiora will play better this week.

Chris (NY)

Your Non-QB Player of the Week, Dan?

Dan Graziano
  (12:23 PM)

Ogletree, I guess. Right? Maybe DRC?

Splooz (SLC)

I will mow your grass if you add Kerrigan and RG3 to your all division team...at least this week. All these fools are witnesses.

Dan Graziano
  (12:23 PM)

Man. It does need to be mowed...

Eric (Madison)

What do you think of the Redskins' safety issue? Losing Jordan Bernstine and replacing him with Jordan Pugh...

Dan Graziano
  (12:24 PM)

It's not great. They'll need Meriweather back eventually. I thought you saw some good, some bad from Gomes this week. But in their ideal world, he wouldn't play that much yet.

Rob Ryan (Penthouse Suite)

So, Dan, do you believe that good secondary play can help the pass rush get to the passer with more consistency yet?

Dan Graziano
  (12:24 PM)

One game. One game. One game.

Gavin (Maryland)

No 'expert' predicted Dallas to beat New York in week 1 and it didn't even seem that close. Did everyone underestimate Dallas, overestimate New York or both?

Dan Graziano
  (12:25 PM)

I think people just got a pick wrong.

Rah-Steam (Hackensack, N.J.)

You think Coughlin gives Wilson another chance this week?

Dan Graziano
  (12:25 PM)

Oh yeah. I don't think he keeps him on the bench for another whole week. But he'd better not fumble again.

Gregg (Philly)

Is the Eagles defense fixed or were they just good against a bad team?

Dan Graziano
  (12:27 PM)

Well, again, you can't judge off of one game. But I look at the upgrades at individual spots. Ryan is obviously better than what they had at MLB last year. Kendricks is obviously better than what they had at SLB last year. Rodgers-Cromartie fits the scheme they're playing better than Samuel did. Cox adds depth to the line. I think there's a lot of evidence that they'll be better.

Llamasaurus Rex (NJ)

Dan, the Browns seemed to confuse Vick and the O-line w/their various blitzes on Sunday. There were DBs and LBs running free at Vick throughout the game. With that in mind, how concerned should Eagles fans be about the Eagles preparing for the Baltimore defense?

Dan Graziano
  (12:27 PM)

Well, uh... very.

Steve (Bristol)

Looks like the Saints only tried a couple of times to run against the Skins, with no success. Do you think they will have the same success against Stephen Jackson and the Rams next week? Would really rather see the Rams passing than rushing.

Dan Graziano
  (12:27 PM)

I think the Redskins' defensive front will make it tough for teams to run all year.

Kyle (Oxford, CT)

I know that Hosley played week 1, but I didn't really hear him talked about at all. Was his disappearance simply because he didn't let up any plays, locked down his guy and his name never came up or did he have the same lackluster performance that the rest of the team did?

Dan Graziano
  (12:28 PM)

He mostly had Austin, who wasn't much of a factor early, so I guess maybe he just did a good job.

Austin (Texas)

"Easiest" game for Dallas this year: Chicago, Baltimore, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, New Orleans

Dan Graziano
  (12:28 PM)

I guess Pittsburgh.

phill (pa)

is ogletree for real is he capable of taking over the number two spot have you heard or seen anything fom the coaches that might lead you to belive he could be the number 2 by the end of season's end

Dan Graziano
  (12:28 PM)

Why does he need to be the 2? What's wrong with the role he played last week?

JZ (DC)

Don't you think that Burgundy on Gold look is easily the best uni combo the Skins tend to wear?

Dan Graziano
  (12:29 PM)

The pants are yellow. They're yellow.

jordan (dirty jerz)

why don't the gmen run more no huddle offense? it always seems to get them going but they always save it for when it's too late in the game

Dan Graziano
  (12:29 PM)

I think their preference is to win the time of possession battle whenever possible.

TEEGMAN (work)

What are your thoughts of D Hall at the inside corner position? I thought he looked a lot more comfortable.

Dan Graziano
  (12:30 PM)

Well, yeah, but Saints are a weird team in that respect. If they throw in there, it's usually going to be to Graham (who was covered by LBs and/or safeties) or Sproles (who was a non-factor). So I don't think we've seen Hall yet on a real slot-receiver type.

Philip (Maryland)

What do you expect from the Ravens in Week 2? Do you think they were for real against the Bengals, or do you think the Ravens are just Week 1 warriors?

Dan Graziano
  (12:31 PM)

I think they'll struggle more to move the ball against the Eagles than they did against the Bengals.

rob (va )

i thought the cowboys d-line played well your thoughts?

Dan Graziano
  (12:31 PM)

I agree. I think Hatcher could be in for a big year.

Microwave (Memphis, TN)

Do you think the Giants lost to the Cowboys was on TC?. i think he should have used his new weapons more.

Dan Graziano
  (12:32 PM)

Yeah, he probably should be fired.

Adam (Ridgefield, NJ)

What are your thoughts on Ogletree's fantasy value? One hit wonder, or someone who could potentially be a every-week starter?

Dan Graziano
  (12:32 PM)

I think you're looking at Robinson again, right? Look at what Robinson did last year when all three were healthy, and consider the value of having him if and when Austin gets hurt. Same exact role, same exact QB. Why not?

Drew (Bloomsburg)

You're really getting to a ton of questions today! What is the Eagles WR rotation like on Sunday if Maclin and Avant can't go?

Dan Graziano
  (12:33 PM)

Sounds like they're bringing in Gilyard just in case. He's a guy who gets open and catches the ball. I wouldn't be surprised if he got some looks if those guys were both down.

Elvis (Mississippi)

Just pointing out that in 'Boys case, competent CB and S play makes D-line look much better.

Dan Graziano
  (12:34 PM)

I agree that it did in the opener. And it could work over the course of the season. It's just that it hasn't yet.

TMSCFINEST (Toronto, Canada)

SIXTY-FIVE TIMES Vick dropped back to pass (not including plays called back to penalties). Now can we blame Marty (Morninwheg)????

Dan Graziano
  (12:35 PM)

I wrote Sunday that I considered it an irresposible game plan, especially against a team that gave up 147 yards per game on the ground last year. I stand by it.

Brian (Bethesda, MD)

Dan, great coverage, as usual.... I know you have said RG3 looked great and i know they moved up in the power rankings and all that. But can you elaborate a little further on why skins fans shouldnt think that performance was a fluke since will smith has had his distractions and their best corner didnt play.... not to mention its a new scheme. The one piece or reassurance i have is that he looked pin poin accurate which was a knock on him in camp.

Dan Graziano
  (12:36 PM)

It's not a fluke, but no one plays their best every week, and he's a rookie. It's totally fair to expect bad games and growing pains, regardless of his talent. If I were a Redskins fan, I'd be so happy just to know he CAN do what he did Sunday, I wouldn't be worried about the inevitable hiccups.

Jhegonna Serkmehoff (Philly)

Does McCoy need more touches against the Ravens this weekend?

Dan Graziano
  (12:37 PM)

Our first question of the chat pointed out that he did get 26, which seems like a reasonable number. Against Cleveland, which is poor against the run, I'd have found more plays for the other RBs. Against Baltimore, running more doesn't usually make a lot of sense.

Dan (Lone Star State)

Obviously biased here, RGIII looks like a lock for number 1 x factor in the NFCEast but, Demarco Murray looks like number 2 and I don't think its that far off. Thoughts?

Dan Graziano
  (12:37 PM)

I don't know what that means, X Factor. Is that Simon Cowell's show?

Charle (Waterloo)

"It's not a fluke"... but to everyone else "It's only one game" what's the difference?

Dan Graziano
  (12:38 PM)

I thought my explanation was pretty thorough.

Erik (IL)

DAN? GB still #2 after that performance?

Dan Graziano
  (12:39 PM)

Again, maybe I'm wrong, but I didn't think Power Rankings were supposed to be based on only one game. I had plenty of reason to think Green Bay was No. 1 in the league last week, and the vast majority of those reasons still stand. They lost to a very good 49ers team who I now have ranked No. 1. How far should they be dropped?

Ivan (Texas)

Opposite of issue with McCoy, I have a feeling the Cowboys are going to overuse Murray especially with his injury history. I know Felix Jones got "hurt" last week but atleast some carries to him or Tanner to help out Murray would be nice, right?

Dan Graziano
  (12:39 PM)

I think Tanner needs to develop into something reliable, since Jones is not.

Asher (McLean)

Will the Redskins try and bring back Cooley?

Dan Graziano
  (12:40 PM)

Possible, although adding a new long-snapper does take up a roster spot they might have been saving for him.

lawrence (DOC)

dan where did you get those clothes, at the toilet...store?

Dan Graziano
  (12:41 PM)

Dorothy Mantooth is a saint!

BigBlueviator (RVA)

Nicks and Cruz were pretty bottled up. based on what you saw from Marty Bennett, does it look like the Giants are going to revitalize that TE role and maybe he gets 60-70 catches this season?

Dan Graziano
  (12:41 PM)

That is not their plan. Plans change, but as of now I believe they intend to rely on their excellent wide receivers as their primary pass-catchers. Again, one game.

Gavin (Maryland)

Name the player on each East team that steps up and wins their week 2 game for them.

Dan Graziano
  (12:42 PM)

Wait. This assumes all four win, right?

Asher (McLean)

How are the Giants ranked 7th in the Power Rankings? They lost at home.

Dan Graziano
  (12:42 PM)

Good point. Kick em out of the league.

Gilmer (Richmond)

What was your prediction for the Redskins record this year? After one game would you change it?

Dan Graziano
  (12:43 PM)

8-8. No.

Charle (Waterloo)

Dan, your explanation was long and contradictory. You know we only read the first four words of what you say. I just want you to admit he needs to do it for "16 games" or whatever it is you say.

Dan Graziano
  (12:43 PM)

Fine. Whatever you want.

Gamedayaholic (RIC)

Vick=Tebow (Novelty backup QB at best)Have the Eagles blown any worth Vick held as a tread after this past weekend?

Dan Graziano
  (12:43 PM)

No one who's watched both guys throw a football could possibly say that Vick=Tebow.

Chuck (Hickory, NC)

You need to move your chat so the power rankings don't come out at the same time every week.

Dan Graziano
  (12:43 PM)

See, now, I think they should move for me.

Elvis (Mississippi)

As a Cowboy fan, Sean Lee is about the most entertainng D player to watch since they had Prime Time on the roster. The guy's a leader too. Am I exaggerating to say that may be one of the top 3 players on the team at this point?

Dan Graziano
  (12:44 PM)

I think Lee's great, on the field, in the locker room, whole package. Sky's the limit for Lee.

Tommy (NOLA)

Dan what impressed u the most this wk

Dan Graziano
  (12:45 PM)

We had dinner Saturday night at a little dive spot in the Quarter called Coops. The redfish was astounding.

Dan Graziano
  (12:45 PM)

Folks, cutting it short this week. Sorry about that. Have some other responsibilities to prepare for and take care of. We shall try for the full hour next Tuesday. Until then, be excellent to each other.
