Chat with James Walker

James Walker
  (4:02 PM)

Let's chat about the AFC East.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

I know it is only the First week But do you think that the Buffalo Bills will be as bad as they were in Week 1 for the 2012 season?

James Walker
  (4:03 PM)

I don't go too much off of one game, Chris. If you remember last year, Buffalo crushed KC and we saw what happened. But this is a big game upcoming against KC where the Bills need to get on track.

Evan (New York)

Thanks for all of the great work James. What did you make Mario Williams's comments about Austin Howard's performance? Is there any merit to his complaints, or is Howard just a legit RT who outplayed Mario?

James Walker
  (4:05 PM)

Williams had a legit complaint. Austin Howard did use his hands to the face often, which is illegal. But on Williams' part, that doesn't make up for every play and just having one tackle. I think Williams was frustrated he didn't make the impact he expected and used that as an excuse. Yes, Howard did it, but Williams should've still made more plays.

Ken (Montreal)

The Pats looked very impressive against Tennessee, if their defense continues to play at a high level is there any stopping them?

James Walker
  (4:07 PM)

You're right, Ken. The Pats D was very different from what I saw last season. However, one game isn't enough. The Patriots' D will have to keep it up and I think it has a good chance to do it again this week against the Cardinals, who have issues at quarterback.

Matt (Stratford, NJ)

Why do Bills fans love Fitz; isn't there enough evidence to show he is not a starting caliber NFL QB?

James Walker
  (4:09 PM)

This is a question that could determine Buffalo's season, Matt. I had questions about giving Fitzpatrick a $59 million extension in the middle of last season. I was surprised when it happened and that Buffalo didn't wait until the end of the year. But the Bills like "Fitz." He's a good guy, smart and has natural leadership ability. But I'm wondering if he can be consistently good over 16 games. I have yet to see it.

Derrick (Albany)

Does Miami's lack of proven receivers to blame for Tannehill's performance, besides him being a rookie?

James Walker
  (4:11 PM)

Both are to blame. Tannehill is going to go through his rookie growing pains. That is expected and the Dolphins have to live with that. What Miami shoul dbe upset with most is that it didn't do enough in the offseason to surround Tannehill with receivers and tight ends. This could stunt his growth, to a degree. I think Tannehill will be ok. But he could have done better with a top-level WR or a good TE.

kidd (philly)

predict the bills vs chiefs game

James Walker
  (4:12 PM)

I do my picks late in the week, Kidd, once the injury reports are released and we know who's in and who's out. I went 3-0 last week. You should check out my weekly picks in the AFC East blog.

Don (Ithaca)

Surprised to see Buffalo sign a RB to replace Nelson, who besides Johnson is a threat in the passing game now?

James Walker
  (4:13 PM)

The Bills like their rookie third-round pick T.J. Graham. He made some plays this preseason to earn a spot on the 53-man roster. This is Graham's time to show he can step up. He was inactive in Week 1.

Bilal (South Beach)

I feel like Tannehill has no chance for success or for something to build on. No weapons! Look at RG3 with some weapons. I feel this is absolutely the worst way to start a QB's career. Even Weeden and Luck have receivers with upside. Im pulling my hair out.......

James Walker
  (4:15 PM)

That's not on Tannehill. He can't sign his own receivers. That's on the front office. The fact that Miami wants to run a precision West Coast offense with no WRs never made sense to me. I've been writing that since the spring. The Dolphins thought "the system" would make up for it. But you need players to make the plays.

Chad (Edmonton)

I would have pulled Weedon in the 4th.Colt would have given them a better chance of winning. It's the classic MY GUY over the old coach's GUY.Coaches should put their ego's aside and play the guy that gives them the best chance to win.thoughts

James Walker
  (4:18 PM)

Chad, take it from a guy who has covered the Browns for a while. That is the last team that needs another QB controversy. Cleveland may lead the NFL in QB controversies over the last decade. They made up their mind that Weeden is the guy, for better or for worse.

Rah-Steam (Hackensack, N.J.)

What did you think of the first round defensive picks in the division such as S.Gilmore, Chandler Jones, D. Hightower, and Q. Couples?

James Walker
  (4:19 PM)

Gilmore struggled in his first game. Jones and Hightower were studs. Coples did ok, but I think he's going to be a good one.

Mark (buffalo)

do you think c.j spiller can take over the starting job with strong play over the next month or so and can he handle a start's load?

James Walker
  (4:21 PM)

I wouldn't be too concerned with Spiller. He showed a the end of last year that he can carry the load. The interesting is that if Fred Jackson didn't get hurt, I would've been calling for Spiller to get more carries anyway. He is turning his game up and reaching his prime. The Bills need to use him more and this gives Buffalo the chance.

lenar cage (springfield,mass)

whats your take on stevan ridley?

James Walker
  (4:24 PM)

Good player. I liked him last year, but he lost the confidence of the coaching staff with his fumbles. The fact that he used that as motivation to win the job in training camp this year showed me something. I think he's a good fit. He's more dynamic that Green-Ellis, just not as sure-handed with the football.

Zane (Titusville, Florida)

Do you think if Matt Moore plays this season he will make another late season push for the dolphins, and possibly become the full time starter?

James Walker
  (4:26 PM)

I agree with the Dolphins' coaching staff. Matt Moore is a good backup. That's what Moore's coaches told him on "Hard Knocks." Moore can fill in for a few games, but he's not the kind of guy to build your team around. I also don't like his fit in the West Coast offense.

Jose (TEXAS)

any chance miami signs a big time free agent receiver this season?

James Walker
  (4:27 PM)

They won't sign one because there's no "big-time" WR sitting on the street right now. A trade is possible, but the games have begun and I don't think teams care to shakeup their rosters at this point.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What AFC East Team do you think has the best Shot of Playing in Super Bowl XLVII?

James Walker
  (4:30 PM)

Chris, the only team with a legit shot at the Super Bowl from the AFC East this year is the New England Patriots. It doesn't mean other teams can't have good seasons. It's just really hard to make it to the final game.

Mark (DC)

Do the Cardinals have any shot against NE?

James Walker
  (4:31 PM)

I won't make my pick until later in the week. But this is the easiest pick of the bunch. So take that for what it's worth.

James Walker
  (4:39 PM)

Sorry, having a few technical difficulties. I think we're good now.

William (Honolulu, HI)

Do you think the Tebow talk may officially come to a close soon; Sanchez looked good.

James Walker
  (4:40 PM)

I don't think it will be over for good anytime soon. If Mark Sanchez plays at this level for 16 games, there's nothing anyone can say. But there will probably be a two- or three-game stretch where Sanchez struggles. It can happen to any QB. But the Tebow pressure will start.

Colton Perkins (SA)

Do you as a fan hope Tebow starts this season or no?

James Walker
  (4:42 PM)

I'm not a fan of any team other than my Temple Owls, where I went to school. So it doesn't matter who plays or who wins or loses. I write what I see and provide my honest analysis of what's going on.

Corey (Camden, DE)

How worried should Jeff Ireland be?

James Walker
  (4:44 PM)

That's always an interesting question. Because it really comes down to one person: Stephen Ross. So to ask me is to ask what's going on in Ross' head. And I'm not sure I can answer that. I know that Ross likes Ireland and thinks highly of him. So that probably reflects on his job security.

Alex (Anaheim)

Was Sunday's game more about the Jets impressing or the Bills disappointing?

James Walker
  (4:45 PM)

I don't think you can have one without the other. It was both. Although I picked the Jets to win, because they always have Buffalo's number, no one expected NY to jump out to a 34-7 lead. For the Bills, their roster is much better than what they showed. If Buffalo had lost by three or four points, no one would be surprised.

Corey (Camden, DE)

The Dolphins recently brought in Donte Stallworth and Jabar Gaffney for workouts. Any chance that they may sign one of them?

James Walker
  (4:47 PM)

They may have to. The Dolphins have Gaffney on their radar. Let's see how Miami's WRs play against Oakland.

PeterOpp (NYC)

On Sunday, the Jets players and coaches were noticeably less effusive in their post-game comments than in the past. That coupled with the way they went about their pre-season pressers and interviews makes me think maybe they've grown up a bit. Agree?

James Walker
  (4:48 PM)

Let's face it, the Jets were humbled last season. Sometimes that forces you to grow up. Had the Jets went to the Super Bowl last year, I think you would've seen more of the old Jets. But they realize just showing up and talking isn't enough. They have to work hard and focus like everyone else to win consistently.

Chet K (LA)

Could Miami sign TO?

James Walker
  (4:50 PM)

Not happening. That would go against everything Miami is trying to do with its team and locker room. The Dolphins tried Chad Johnson and it didn't work. That is enough.

Chris (Boston)

There are talks around Boston that the Pats plan on using Wes Welker a little less this year b/c they do not plan on resigning him next year. This will also give more opportunity to other receivers who will hypothetically take his place. This doesn't make sense to me considering that they are paying him $9m+. Any thoughts on your end?

James Walker
  (4:51 PM)

It's tricky. I think it's speculation based on fact, if that makes sense. The fact is New England played Welker in significantly fewer snaps than usual on Sunday. It's also a fact that he has one year left on his contract. What does that mean? I think we need to see more than one game to know. But it is curious.

Dave (Charlotte)

"The Patriots have a running game? Uh oh" - the rest of the league

James Walker
  (4:52 PM)

Not good at all. And when Shane Vereen comes back, it would get even better.

Deven (Buffalo, NY)

Should the Bills get rid of Fitzpatrick?

James Walker
  (4:54 PM)

Not happening, Deven. The Bills committed big money to Fitzpatrick, and he will be the quarterback for at least this year, if not more. This was the risk Buffalo took in signing him. It may be one bad game. But he's had a lot of up-and-down games, and it's time for Fitzpatrick to play consistent football if he's ever going to be a franchise starter.

bill (vegas) [via mobile]

Hey whats up JW. look we all know that the fins are going to get a high draft pick. who do u see them taking and where will they be picking

James Walker
  (4:56 PM)

Bill, it's waaaaaay too early to be thinking draft. Miami played just one game. Enjoy the season. The Dolphins have a winnable game Sunday against Oakland that could get them to .500.

kidd (philly)

i think the bills should of press covered more, to give the pass rush a chance. what you think?

James Walker
  (4:58 PM)

The Bills are taking the approach that their D-line can rush with four and drop everyone else in coverage. It makes sense in theory, especially with young CBs. But when those four players up front don't pressure the QB, the plan doesn't work.
