Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

Check out of Turn 4 answers today. What's wrong with Rowdy? Can Matt win the Chase as a lame duck? Who is this season's biggest flop? And who will win the Chase? http://tinyurl.com/8nhy79o

Jay (GA)

Where will Kurt end up in 2013? RPM? RCR? Furniture Row? KBM?

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

RCR if they can find the sponsorship.

Jay (GA)

Can Mike Ford help turn Ambrose into consistent front-runner on ovals?

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

I truly believe he can. I think Mike's a very underrated crew chief. He may not show up this year, but wait and see what happens next year.

Jay (GA)

With Hornish continuing to outperform Slowgano, is Roger starting to regret his ill-advised decision to put Joey in the car instead of Sam who has now developed chemistry with the 22 team?

Terry Blount
  (2:02 PM)

Absolutely not. Joey is a still a very young guy. They believe in his talent. And a fresh start probably will do him some good.

Griffin (Delaware )

Terry I was at the Dover race when Jr. won after the Sept 11th attacks..It was one of the most memorable races and sporting events I will ever be a part of...Lets never forget to honor those who lost their lives that Septemeber day and thank the brave troops who take the fight to the terriorsits every day...God Bless our Great nation !

Terry Blount
  (2:03 PM)

Agreed Griffin.

kris (mn)

Reverse the roles from Saturday night. If Kylie was a lap down with an awful handling car, do you think he could stay optimistic and make a comeback like Jeff? Or would he cuss out his team and overdrive the car and crash?

Terry Blount
  (2:04 PM)

I think it's fair to stay he might have tried to overdrive the car. But you also don't know if Dave would have made the same dramatic adjustment AG made that enabled Jeff to race to the front.

Tim (El Cajon, CA)

Terry, what do you think of putting Joanna Long in JRM's car after Danica goes to SHR next year? She would get better equipment, Junior and his sister should be able to come up with sponsorship for her as a rising female star you would think. I would think there would be a lot of exposure for Joanna and the sponsor really.

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

I would love to see it because I think Long has a lot of talent.

Kevin (Nevada)

Is Kyle missing the chase better for Denny since now he will be getting all of Gibbs best equipment and both teammates will be helping him out?

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

That's an interesting perspective. I think the equipment still is good for both teams, but late in the Chase if Denny needs a spot or two, KyBu would give it to him now where he wouldn't if they both were still in contention.

Tim (Saratoga Springs, NY)

Hi Terry - thanks for chatting. What do you think of Bowyer's chances? He has ten top 10s the last 14 races - two of which were wins. Two of the races (Daytona and Kentucky) he was wrecked (not his fault) and at Atlanta he had battery issues. The #15 team seems to be hitting it's stride right now, could he pull it out? Would that be good for NASCAR to have a new face as champion? (I don't count Jr, Hamlin, Biff, etc as new faces even though they haven't one the championship). Thanks!

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

I honestly think anyone in it can win it. Last year proved that to be true. I think any new champion is good, but it wouldn't be as good for NASCAR as Dale Jr. winning it.

RG (South Carolina)

What gives with Kyle (no wins in the Chase when running for the title, couldn't seal the deal twice in Richmond to get in- '09 vs Vickers, '12 vs Jeff)? Is he NASCAR's version of Phil Mickelson pre-2004?

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

That was one of our Turn 4 questions today. It's hard to say. First, he's had some terrible luck, including three engines faiures over the summer, unheard in this era. Bt Kyle seems to have lost his edge. He's a little tentative at times.

William (Oakland, CA)

Hey Terry - it's great to see some personality in victory lane and other interviews with Clint Bowyer. Seems like this guy would be a good thing for NASCAR if he can start winning more. I've never really paid much attention to him but he seems like he'd be a fun guy to have a beer with....we need more of that in this sport!!! What do you think?

Terry Blount
  (2:11 PM)

Clint's a very down to earth guy and has a much larger fan base than most people realize.

Ron (Smithville)

Hi Terry, with Rowdy only racing for wins now, do you see #18 winning 4-5 of the last races like Stewart did last year, making alot of noise and helping Denny to win the championship?

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

I'll eat my hat is Rowdy wins five Chase races. He might win one, but I do think he still can help Denny if it comes down to a spot or two at the end.

mike (phila)

in the post race interviews jj did not seem overly happy that the 24 made the chase, did you notice that and why do you think that?

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

He didn't up and down screaming, but he's happy for Jeff. However, he also knows that's one more top contender he has to beat.

mike (phila)

At one time it appeared that the hendrick team was very close now it seems that theres not aton of communication between the drivers specifically the 24 with the 48,88.. do you think that is true and if so what was the falling out about?

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

There's no falling out. The 44/88 are closer because their teams work in the same shop. Same with the 24 and 5.

Rob (Scott AFB, IL)

Do you see Matt Kenseth filling sort of a mentor role at JGR, especially with somebody as hot-headed as Kyle? If there's anybody in this business that knows not only how to manage a race car but manage emotions, in my opinion it's Kenseth, and I think Kyle could learn a lot from him -- if he's willing.

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

Matt can lead by example, but I don't see him as a mentor role. Matt does his own thing. However, I do think Martin did that this year at MWR and made both Bowyer and Truex better.

Kristin (NYC)

Are you more surprised that the 24 is in the Chase, or the 18 is out?

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

Surprised the 18 is out. I predicted both would make the Chase at the start of the season. I'm doing a blog this week on how our preseason picks turned out for who we selected to make the Chase. The ESPN.com boys did pretty darn well. As you might guess, we all were wrong on Carl. Who wasn't?

Rob (Scott AFB, IL)

Let's say I'm Dave Rogers. Where am I this February?

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

Still leading the 18, but I could be wrong.

Greg (South Bend, IN.)

Hey Terry, How's everything in the Sound? I lost track of silly season. Where is Sam Hornish going? I think he got a bad deal and deserves a chance after the way he has drove the 22.

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

It's lovely today on the Sound, thanks for asking. Sam will drive full time in NW again next season for Penske and probably 8 or 10 Cup races. He's disappointed he didn't get the 22 ride, but that decision was made quite a while ago. If they had full sponsorship for a third car, Sam would get it.

Zach Cross (Church Hill TN)

Who's a better driver Carl Edwards or Clint Bowyer.

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

Carl Edwards.

Fred (NC)

You said, "Denny's one flaw is inconsistency, but Grubb can help him avoid that in the Chase." Wasn't Grubb's team in the chase last year wildly inconsistent?

Terry Blount
  (2:22 PM)

Inconsistent? Lord no. They won five times, had eight top 10s and only finished worse than 15th once.

Zach Cross (Church Hill TN)

Do you think Dale Earnhardt Jr will win another race this season.

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

Possibly. Dega maybe. He's good at Phoenix and good at Martinsville and Charlotte.

Scott (Charlotte)

Hey Terry, who is going to get more chatters? You or Dale Jr. at 4pm

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

If I get more chatters than Junior, I'm immediately calling my boss and demanded a raise.

Kevin (PA)

Which non-chase driver do you see finishing the best this weekend in Chicago?

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

I'd say KyBu might be on a mission this weekend.

Turk (Mich.)

Now that Rowdy has nothing to lose do you see him taking his revenge on #2 for Watkins Glen?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

No. NASCAR will look very carefully at any non-Chaser who deliberately wrecks a Chase driver. That's something he can't afford to do with his past.

Turk (Mich.)

Since Pops got fired do you see Coach hiring him to cc the #18 to give Rowdy that tough, discipliarian, father figure that Rowdy needs up on the pit box?

Terry Blount
  (2:27 PM)

No. I think the ship has sailed as far as being a Cup crew chief for Tony Sr. And Pops might strangle Rowdy within five races.

Saul (San Diego)

If one Hendrick car has a shot of winning the cup, will the other 3 HMS cars provide groove blocking cover

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

If they got to Homestead and only one was still in contention, they would help out the guy with a chance to win the title. But not by blokcing as much as giving up a position.

Alan M (Columbus, Ohio)

With Rowdy reflecting on the season, which do you think is the most frustrating for him: the engine failures, the no-call by NASCAR at Watkins Glen, or Dave Rogers forgetting he was a crew chief and not a weatherman?

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

I would guess The Glen. And crew chiefs always gamble on weather decisions. It's a tough call.

Mike (MD)

How much would it cost to sponsor busch in a 4th rcr team next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

Somewhere around $15 million for the entire season.

Terri (N. Hollywood)

Hi Terry, does NASCAR tell the 31 Non-Chasers to stay out of the way of the chasers and let them pass and not race against the chasers?

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

No. Everyone still races as hard as they can, but NASCAR doesn't want any shenanigans like deliberately wrecking a Chase guy to help another Chase driver on your team. These guys aren't going to do that. They're professionals.

Joe (Troy, NY)

Terry, some chase drivers have gotten real aggravated when NON chase drivers go for the win in these chase races, and don't move out of the way. I keep waiting for an argument as to why non-chasers shouldn't compete in these races

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

No one thinks that. Everyone goes for the win. Chasers get mad if a non-Chaser is a lap down and gets in the way.

Joe (Troy, NY)

Of the twelve racing for the championship, would any of them shock you to be within shouting distance come Homestead?

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

No, not really. Anyone can get how and be in contention at the end. But some haven't shown much potential this season to do that. Harvick for example, because RCR is half a step behind this year.

Mack (Spade Racing) (Wilmington DE)

How happy is Mr. Hendrick that all four of his teams made the Chase this year?

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

He said before the season started he expected it and he was right. It's a big deal to any team owner because it keeps all the sponsors happy.

Tony (SF)

With RC's comments about Busch, is he trying to attract sponsors so he can field a 4th team?

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

Sure he is. If he throws it out there, maybe some CEO will say, "Hey, I should do that." Not likely, but you never know.

Joe (Troy, NY)

Do you think Roush will suffer as an organization without Kenseth's leadership? Is Biffle ready to take that role? Is Edwards? Can Edwards and Biffle co-exist without Kenseth's influence?

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

Jack's boys will be fine. Kenseth is an outstanding racer, but he's not really a team leader kind of guy, except by example. He's very quiet and private. And I think Stenhouse will do a good job next year in that car.

Michael (GA)

In July the last 2 years people were saying it is going to take 2 wins to get the WC. And for the 2nd year in a row it didn't take 2 wins.

Terry Blount
  (2:40 PM)

Good point, and I am a little surprised by that. But it stilll was darn exciting at the end to see if Jeff could get the last spot over Kyle.

Saul (San Diego)

How will the Rear-end suspension limits affect the Hendrick stable for the chase?

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

That's a great question Saul. I think it could hurt them. Those guys got used to that little advantage and now they won't have it. The cars will drive differently on the fast ovals.

Alan M (Columbus, Ohio)

Will Jimmie Johnson ever miss a Chase before he retires?

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

Sure, sometime before he retires. That might be the thing that causes him to retire.

Terri (N. Hollywood)

With HMS getting al 4 cars in is it time for NASCAR to rethink the 4 car rule and cut it back to max. 3?

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

No. In fact, I think it's time for NASCAR to consider going the other direction. They just aren't enough quality team owners out there to field competitive teams.

Terri (N. Hollywood)

Now that Rowdy's not in the chase is he free to run as many Nationwide and truck races as he wants?

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

I hope not. The fewer Cup guys in those races the better.

Saul (San Diego)

If you had to start a 4 car team, who would be your four drivers be? select drivers from the past to present?

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

Earnhardt Sr., Pearson, JJ and Richard Petty.

dennis boughton (san deigo califonia)

will jeff gordon win the championship

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

He could, but I don't think he will.

Mack (Spade Racing) (Wilmington DE)

Just realized that not only did all four of Hendrick's cars make the Chase, but so did one of his satellite teams (Stewart), while another (Newman) nearly made it. Is it really just Hendrick on top, with everyone else gunning for second-place?

Terry Blount
  (2:47 PM)

I don't think so. I think Denny can hang with them and I picked him to win the title. Brad K is tough in the 2 and both Roush Fords are strong.

Keith H (Seattle)

Terry, I realize the business is dependent on sponsorships. However, $15 million annually is pretty steep. Are you sure we need all these private jets and motorcoaches? It just seems there are areas to trim.

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

I agree Keith. It's time to take a serious look at the business model. But it's hard to go backwards once you get used to the good life.

Scott (Hollyweird)

Hi TB, who do you have for your top 5 and a dark horse this weekend?

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

Brad K, Junior, JJ, Hamlin and KyBu. My darkhorse is Harvick.

Terri (N. Hollywood)

Why would Finch close down Phoenix instead of becoming a S&P like Nemechek, Baldwin, Parsons and those teams?

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

I would applaud any owner who stopped racing rather than start and park.

Saul (San Diego)

Of the 10 Chase Crew Chiefs, who is the best strategist and who has the best over the all pit crew?.

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

Most would say Chad, but I think it's Paul Wolfe now. I think Denny has the best crew overall.

Joe (Troy, NY)

Could Chad Knaus have made any other current driver a five time champ? Would JJ have won five titles without Knaus?

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

Both men still would have been successful and won titles, but neither would have done what they've done without the other.

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)

@Troy. Would JJ have won five in a row without The Chase format?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

That's impossible to say because they would have raced differently in the old format.

Terri (N. Hollywood)

If Dale doesn't win the championship this season will he have missed his best shot ever?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

He will ahve missed on his best shot so far. But this year is an indication that he probably has a few more shots left.

Ron (OH)

So because teams refuse to cut the luxuries, are we headed to 15 top teams and the rest on shoestring budgets?

Terry Blount
  (2:57 PM)

It's not just about personal luxury Ron. The big-money teams hire more people and can pay more to get the best people. They do more R&D. They build more cars, they have all the best equipment.

Teri (CA)

Better driver: Matt Kenseth or Greg Biffle?

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

They have much different styles. Matt is more calculating and conservative. Biff is more aggressive and a constant hard-charger. But if you ask me to choose, I'll take Matt.

Terri (N. Hollywood)

If Newman can't make the chase what chance does Danica have at SHR?

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

Next year? Zero.

dennis boughton (san deigo califonia)

do you think jeff gordon will win another race in the chase

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

Maybe, but I don't think he will win the Chase. It would be great for the sport if he does, becoming another 5-time champ and earning another title after 11 year of trying.

Saul (San Diego)

And the Final question of the Day. Will you be in Chicago and what stories are you working?

Terry Blount
  (3:03 PM)

Newt will be in Chicago and I'll be in New Hampshire next week. Have a great week everybody. I'm out. And join in on the Dale Jr. chat at 4 pm if you can. Peace.
