Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:03 PM)

Greetings all. Thanks for coming by.

Scott (Indy)

PK - what are your thoughts on the Colts bringing in Essex

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:04 PM)

The more the merrier. Knows Bruce Arians' schemes. Probably better than some guys they are using.

burntorangebread1 (Houston)

PK, whats your take on the MLB opposite Cushing? Is Brady James gonna be able to stop the run or might Dobbins be a better choice in there? It seems to me that James is a better pass defender but really lacks in the run D and Dobbins does pretty well in run defense but lacks in the passing game. Should I trust what I'm seeing or am I off base? Thanks

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:04 PM)

The guy I want in there is Daryl Sharpton. Hopefully in about six weeks he will have a chance. But I think they are all in with Bradie James at this point.

JayKay (H-Town)

Was Week One an indication that the Titans still have a ways to go, or simply a case of a better opponent showing their dominance?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:05 PM)

No way you can look at that game and not think the Titans still have a ways to go.

Craig (Houston)

Do you think we will ever see Chris Johnson return to being an elite RB?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:05 PM)

Starting to doubt it.

Chuck P (Indy)

Do you think our O-line is as bad as I do?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:05 PM)

I don't know how bad you think it is. I think it's bad.

JayKay (H-Town)

I'm worried that the weakness in the Texans defense is the strength of the Jax offense (running up the middle). Am I correct in thinking this game will likely be closer than people are expecting?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:06 PM)

You found, maybe, one thing. But what about Texans' front against that patchwork O-line?

Arian Foster (Houston)

Turn around. Let me see your name. Turn around. I don't know you bro.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:06 PM)

I loved that. I find Arian wildly entertaining.

Chalton (Work)

What are you thoughts on the Jags Defense? They surely had problems tackling in week 1 - Ted Johnson said this morning on Houston radio that they are the worst tackling team in the NFL.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:07 PM)

He watched 16 games and rated the tacking of every defense? Wow! They need Daryl Smith and Derek Cox back, for sure.

Kenneth G. (Columbia, TN)

Who's the best non-female sideline reporter in the business?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:07 PM)

I don't watch as many games on TV as most people, and I don't keep role of sideline reporters. Can I have a multiple choice, please?

Michael (Perez)

Saints bad week or bad team?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:08 PM)

Bad week.

Ben (CA)

How many songs by Justin Beiber can you name?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:08 PM)

Proudly, zero. Honest.

Scoots (Washington, DC)

Paul...talk me off the ledge. I'm a Titans fan living in DC. RGIII hype is killing me. I'm not from Tennessee, but southern VA, and have been an Oilers/Titans fan since the beginning of Eddie George's career. Am I dumb to remain a Titans fan? Would I be a coward to jump ship? I'm a DC fan in all other sports (yes, even NBA) and a mere 29 years old. I don't condone fan hopping, but it's so hard to be a Titans fan!

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:09 PM)

You're not much of a fan of anyone if you consider not being a fan of them, in my opinion.

Paul (Oklahoma)

In CJ's 2000 yard season, many yards where picked up running the option with VY. Given Locker's mobility, why are we not seeing some variant of the option being ran?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:09 PM)

Because 2,000 yards isn't the goal. They could do some of that. But that year, at the end, they were playing for CJ's yardage, not to win. They aren't doing that now, nor should they be. Also, they hardly ran a lot of option that season.

Jason (Murfreesboro)

Watching the Titans defense, it looks like McCarthy is the only one I would call a "playmaker." With the lack of playmakers on defense, which is a bigger need for the team, more defensive playmakers or offensive linemen?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:10 PM)

The more I've seen and heard, the more the running woes were CJ than O-line. I'd say 70-30 split. Defensive play-makers are a huge issue. Pass rushers in particular.

Jason (P town)

How long do the Titans stick with CJ if he continues to make bad reads like he did in the Pats game... If history teaches us anything Im guessing they will wait to long... Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:11 PM)

Who's the alternative who's going to run great? Darius Reynaud and Javon Ringer are not great.

Ryan ((FLA))

Whats your take on Blaine Gabbert after the 1st regular season game? Do you feel like he has the potential to be elite in the Jacksonville offense?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:12 PM)

Wo, wo. He's better. He's maybe an average guy now. You are trying to jump from horrific to elite?

titans fans (lp field)

Lots of season ticket holders at LP were grumbling about paying to watch a perenially apathetic/mediocre team and not renewing psl's. Do you think the Titans first TV blackout will be before or after the start of the 2014 season?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:12 PM)

After.

Dan (Richmond, VA)

Hey Paul why aren't you on the Power Rankings anymore?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:13 PM)

Wasn't like a Supreme Court appointment. They rotate stuff like that, and that's fine. It's a time-consuming deal. I look forward to seeing what that group comes up with weekly.

Kevin (Indy)

Can the Colts make the 3-4 transition successfully this year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:14 PM)

What's successful. They aren't an outright 3-4, they are a hybrid that will look like a 4-3 in nickel. Very rare to do it in one year considering the personnel alterations it takes. Houston was an exception last year.

Trip (Jacksonville)

Is Cecil Shorts III the next Jimmy Smith?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:15 PM)

From one big play we're going to say that? Please pause.

Fred (Gainesville, FL)

Was Blaine Gabbert's day was more a results of the Vikings defense or Gabbert's improvement?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:15 PM)

He got the blame when he was terrible. He gets the credit when he's better.

Jason (P town)

Granted Reynaud isnt proven, but he does seem to have the eye to pick up the running lanes, Dont you think?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:16 PM)

He didn't do any better than CJ with his chances Sunday.

Chris (Upper Carolina)

Better band:Rolling Stones or Led Zeppelin

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:16 PM)

Stones.

Ryan (Aggieland)

Why do you hate CJ so much? You can't run the ball behind a line when your getting hit 8 out of 11 carries (See Pats game film)

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:17 PM)

I don't hate him. I am tired of the same answers to the same questions. Get angry and go out and show us that you didn't flip the switch off after you got your money.

Kris (Texas)

With the colts O line looking, well, bad. Does Andrew Luck play all 16 games this year, or does he get nicked up at some point? If he gets hurt, I don't know if I could see the brass taking him out.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:18 PM)

So they are going to play him with an injury that dictates he sit? He'll play when he can play. He'll be getting rid of the ball quite quickly if his protection is bad.

Ryan (Aggieland)

Facts are facts PK, the O-line personnel in Tennessee has changed much more than CJ's legs. Wake up and smell the roses, nobody can run behind our line.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:19 PM)

I linked to a story in Wednesday's edition of RTC that has freeze frames of the moment-of-decision for CJ. Go have a look and assess the holes that were available. There were more than 11 yards available.

Larry (Cincinnati)

Do you think Kris Adams will develop into a 1st rate starting WR?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:20 PM)

I do not. But I am not good at looking at raw receivers and imagining them polished.

Craig (Houston)

I was thinking the Texans might try to showcase Tate a little more this year to set up a trade in the offseason. Better to get something for him than lose him once his contract runs out. Thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:21 PM)

That's baseball thinking. Very rare you "showcase" someone in order to trade him in the NFL. And the team that traded for him in your scenario is trading for a guy who's not under contact for long. So why would you do it?

Brian (Cville, VA )

Looks like we might see a much better performance out of Marcedes Lewis this year. If you MUST pick after one game, do we see 2010 or 2011 version the rest of the year?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:22 PM)

It's not going to be one or the other, and I don't understand why there isn't a third option where he is somewhere in between. Which is, frankly, what he is.

Bob (DC)

Who is in this AFC South Division?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:24 PM)

What prompted you to stop by, if I may ask? The Texans of Houston, the Titans of Tennessee, the Jaguars of Jacksonville and the Colts of Indianapolis.

Victor (Minn)

The emergence of a healthy Britt should open up the run game for CJ. Titans may use pass to set up the run with the interior O-line being so inadequate. your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:24 PM)

An eighth man in the box wasn't an issue for CJ Sunday. So this open things up for him idea is a myth, right now. Things are not closed down.

Brian (Cville, VA )

So....I think we now know what MJD gained out of his holdout... -$800,000 according to reports he denies. Savvy business decision on his part.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:25 PM)

Odd views. If he doesn't hold out, you know what the price would be? Zero. So how is $800,000 a "win?"

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:26 PM)

On Richie Incognito, Antonio Smith and player safety

Tim (Franklin)

Why did we hear all the hype about Tommie Campbell during the off-season and pre-season and then he didn't even play on defense last week?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:26 PM)

Because they went with Ryan Mouton as their third corner and didn't advertise they were going to do something different so New England wouldn't know.

Marcus (Houston)

PK, at what point do the Titans address the coaching on the CJ issue? They changed the scheme that allowed CJ to be the weapon that he was. Why not just adjust the scheme to the personnel instead of trying to force the personnel to adjust to the scheme?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:29 PM)

What if the scheme is now about Jake Locker and Kenny Britt and Nate Washington and Kendall Wright and Jared Cook? Those guys are personnel too, right? Not smart in today's NFL to key your team around a running back.

Rah-Steam (Hackensack, N.J.)

Wimbley looked pretty solid. Is that a sign of things to come or just a great matchup with the tall Left Tackle?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:30 PM)

He's a good player. He's been a good player in the league.

Eli (my cube)

Paul, since you can predict the future.. powerball #s please????

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:30 PM)

I can only give you part of it. 9

Thomas (Shelbyville, TN)

So it is your belief that the Titans run game was on CJ?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:31 PM)

I gave 70 percent of him to him.

Rah-Steam (Hackensack, N.J.)

What type of performance should we expect this week from Luck and Locker in your opinion?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:31 PM)

Better in both cases. Maybe a lot better for Luck.

matt (houston)

Do you think Andre Johnson can revert back to being an elite receiver or do you think age and injury will prevent him from being what he once was?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:32 PM)

I think we got a little carried away with the age and injury theme. But we'll have to see.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Who plays more this week - Collie or Britt?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:32 PM)

Britt would be my guess.

Ryan (Aggieland)

Who ends up with more receiving yards this year, Wright or Britt?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:32 PM)

Britt.

Joe (Jacksonville)

After seeing the Jags and Vikings go to OT and alternate possession actually taking place, what is your opinion of the OT rules fs the previous way?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:34 PM)

I'm with Mike Silver of Yahoo. It's unnatural. The Jaguars didn't do it well, but they were playing four-down football. When you take punting out of the list of possibilities, it's a different game to a degree.

Mike Wyant (USA)

Ravens are going to beat the eagles next week. Even if the ravens play like they did last week and if the Eagles play like they did last week, than it is a certain win for the ravens.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:35 PM)

I love nothing more than a fan proclaiming as fact a prediction in an unpredictable league.

Bunny (Rocky Mountains)

Will Arian Foster ever get any MVP love? He was phenomenal as usual when he wasn't even supposed to play. Did you see that jumping TD?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:36 PM)

You say "ever" like he's constantly been overlooked. Rodgers was clearly the MVP last year. If Foster and the Texans have a huge year, he'll be considered. Hard for it to be a non-QB any longer. Maybe offensive player of the year is more likely.

Wendo (Indy)

Do you think the changes the Colts made on the oline are stop gap measures to get through the season until all the cap money frees up next season? With all the recent whiffs in drafting on the o line (albeit different management) I would like to see them pay (even overpay) some proven commodities.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:37 PM)

Of course they are. You think they got most of these guys for long-term? Winston Justice isn't long term. They'll address it in the draft and maybe free agency. Anthony Castonzo and Samson Satele look like the only locks to be in their spots next year to me.

burntorangebread1 (Houston)

Nice work on the Incognito thing, I had read it earlier. After reading it my question would be why would Smith (of all people) be so vocal, adamant, and quick to respond in the way he did if he was not being honest, after all he is a pretty tough guy who himself doesn't mind a personal fowl flag every now and again. What would he stand to gain?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:38 PM)

Thanks. I don't think any reasonable person is suggesting he's lying. He would stand to gain an opportunity to vent.

Steve (DC)

PK... in 2 years, do you think Indy will regret passing on RG3?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:39 PM)

Nope.

Martin Van B. (USA)

Better president: Millard Fillmore or Benjamin Harrison?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:39 PM)

I've going to have to plead ignorance on that one. Don't know their resumes that well. Call me a bad American.

Brian (Cville, VA)

PK, Blaine stood in there and took some shots on Sunday. The first one was on an unabated offsides. Think the "soft" reputation is over?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:40 PM)

Nothing goes away from one game.

PKIII (Charlotte)

What's your opinion of Vontae Davis after the first game?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:40 PM)

Hardly a great game. But one game against a good team.

Steve (Milwaukee)

Granted Luck has shown a lot of poise and promise, but was it just me or did he seem a little skittish when under pressure? There were a couple of overthrows to an open Reggie Wayne in particular. First game jitters?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:42 PM)

A bad game.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:42 PM)

People, please breathe and fight all urges to jump to any conclusions off of one game.

Chris (St. Johns, FL)

Is it too early to decide whether Eugene Monroe is turning the corner to being an elite LT? You have to give me credit at least for re-wording my question a couple of times!

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:43 PM)

A good game. It's too early to decide anything. Three games will probably be too early to decide anything.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Did you watch any of the Steelers-Broncos game? Impressed with PM, or do you need to see a few deep throws to consider him "back"?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:43 PM)

He looked like himself. If he stays healthy, hell be good and they'll be good.

Brian (Cville, VA)

Considering the Jags had injuries going into the first game, why didn't they pursue Ryan Harris? He seemed like a good OT a couple of years ago. Good find for the Texans or overrated back in the day?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:44 PM)

He's a Denver system guy, which is now the Texans' system.

Eli (my cube)

paul will you be in Jax for the game this Sunday?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:45 PM)

I will be.

Brian (Standing in front of my Jump to Conclusions Mat)

Think we can conclude that the Jags shouldn't have been content with Guy Whimper as their primary O-Line backup? They've been constantly shuffling in folks since training camp.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:45 PM)

I was against the move from the moment we learned of it. I understand they've lost several people. But they backups they had/have were in sufficient.

Zoltan (Budapest, Hungary)

Is Troy Kropog better then Guy Whimper?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:46 PM)

I would hope so.

Ryan (NY)

Why did the Colts not use Allen at all this week? Guy had a very good preseason and was a big part of why they had some success in the preseason. I think they have to get that man the ball.

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:48 PM)

I agree. But it could have just been about the game.

Aaron (Jacksonville, FL)

If Cecil Shorts does start to get more opportunities, who do you think he will be taking those opportunities from?

Eli (my cube)

tell me, I've never been to TX, I know its hot, but is it FL humid hot? I don't think the Texans have ever played here in Sept.. it's pretty nasty. Think that could play a role at all?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:49 PM)

The heat won't hurt a team from Houston.

Stephen Colbert (Comedy Central)

Blaine Gabbert: great quarterback; greatest quarterback?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:50 PM)

This is the kind of thing people are saying. Well not really quite this crazy, but you catch my drift...

Ed (Fort Sam Houston)

Martin dropped open pass...why didn't they keep Posey?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:50 PM)

Um, they did keep Posey. You want to erase a won job over five weeks off one drop?

Devin (Austin TX)

Does Martin's drop and Jean's solid play last week push Jean into more snaps this week?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:51 PM)

ONE PLAY IN ONE GAME!

Robert Plant (In disbelief)

Can't believe you picked the stones....Anyway, do you think Leroy Harris will continue to have "leg fatigue" and be allowed remain a starter. Will Deuce be a contributor this weekend?Zeppelin Rules!

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:54 PM)

They've set it up that he could experience increased fatigue and be replaced. But Lutui will have to impress early and they'll have to be willing to change course in a way they aren't usually.

Doug (MD)

I have Britt and Washington in my fantasy league... who should I trust more to get the ball? I should I forget both and go with Donald Brown in the flex?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:55 PM)

My policy: Play the guy you drafted highest.

Brian (Cville, VA)

What's harder for a tackle to block, an elite DE in a 4-3 (i.e. Jared Allen) or a elite rush OLB in a 3-4 (i.e. Demarcus Ware)...not the people but the positions with a player of the same talent level?

Paul Kuharsky
 (12:57 PM)

Depends on the tackle, I would imagine. But the guy going against the 3-4 will get some less predictable looks.

Maurice Jones Drew (Jacksonville, FL)

Just know, my 100+ rushing yards this Sunday are for you, the win is for everyone else.

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:02 PM)

You can run for 2,000 yards this year (actually, you can't) and it doesn't change the facts of the holdout or who was right (not you) and who wasn't.

Scott (CT)

As much as I like Hasselbeck as a person, and he had a good career, but in watching him Sunday and in pre-season, his arm looks shot. The Titans can't reasonably expect to compete with him in the game if Locker goes down. Why not leave Hasselbeck on the roster to tutor Locker but elevate Smith, who seems to have a much better arm and a very good grip on the offense?

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:04 PM)

He never had a real big arm. There is no way Smith is a better option right now. You don't ever keep a guy to tutor, he has to be able to play.

Carlos (Too Many Fantasy teams)

Hey PK, I got an opening in my league. Interested??

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:05 PM)

No, but thank you.

Paul Kuharsky
 (1:13 PM)

Thanks for coming, everyone.
