Chat with Jesse Rogers

Jesse Rogers
  (2:02 PM)

Hello hockey fans...welcome to the first of many blackhawks chat for the upcoming season...that is, if we have a season...its now or never to reach a deal before a lockout might happen...everyone is in New York to discuss so we'll see but it doesnt sound great, at least at the moment. Anyway, fire away with questions..I might have answers

Alex (Anaheim)

Is there any reason to be optimistic about a labor agreement anymore?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:04 PM)

Maybe not for this weekend but I think it will be sooner rather than that might mean a month or two or a week or two but I still think it the major scope of things that's not so bad..but see, everyone talks tough until they dont so you never know when it will wont be'll be a quick change in philosophy or philosophies by both sides

PEEKSTER28 (Palatine,IL)

I understand the Hawks are high on Krueger and Bolland, but Bolland isnt a second line center (so we've been told) and that this point neither is Krueger. I don't believe that Krueger is the classic 4th line center. So where does that leave us without a trade? I don't see them lining up with Toews, Kane, Bolland and Krueger as the top 4 centers. Your opinion please.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:07 PM)

I think they have to make due as best they can and that means Kruger as the 2nd line guy...toews, bolland and than Mayers or whoever on the 4th again...the hope has to be kruger is that much better this yr and as Ive stated before its no guarantee but I wouldnt put it past him to at least make people less upset about that position..I truly believe Kruger will take another step..but will it be enough? I dont know

Mark (Naperville, IL)

So with the Michal Rozsival signing with gives on the Hawks defense? Do you think the Hawks will use a Olsen/Rozsival rotation on their 3rd pairing?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:09 PM)

AS the third pair? That would leave a regular out of the lineup like leddy or hammer..or do you mean they rotate in and out with someone else? I think Roz plays if healthy most nights...Olsen might even start in the minors at this point...

Tony (Lombard)

With the defense set, the second line center spot is still an issue, is Kane the Hawk's answer or do you think a younger guy like McNeil, Danault or Pirri have a chance?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:10 PM)

As i said i think right now Kruger is the best answer..No way those other guys are ready..of you dont think Kruger is ready they arent either even if they have some offensive talent..its not just about that as we know

Kevin (Battle Creek, MI)

I like what the players and the NHLPA are doing, but do you think this will really put pressure on the NHL? It doesn't even sound like all the owners are thinking as one, right now.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:11 PM)

Who knows what will put pressure on the owners..common thinking is the Winter Classic and right now thats about reminds of last time..they will hold out until they get it least right in their minds...and as we look back they didnt even get it right last time or we wouldnt be in this situation again

Erik (SF, CA)

With the Roszival signing, one of Montador or Hjalmarsson are likely expendable. While Hammer would conceivably command a better return, this certainly hurts the Hawks from a bargaining position. Would Montador have ANY value to a team like, say, the Islanders to cover up some cap space in return for a LOW pick, like a 7th rounder?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:14 PM)

That would be the only way he would have value but thats a pretty bad sell to the powers at be and the fans.."we dont love this guy but we need his overbloated salary" so I dont think anyone takes him...In some ways, it might be Stan's worst move..cause it was strictly a scouting/personnel decision and its not like they spent a TON last offseason..he was the one guy that got money...they bid against themsleves essentially, backed themselves into a corner by trading for his rights and simply mis-scouted him...

Paul (Denver, CO)

What are the chances that the NHL will be playing this year?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:14 PM)

Still very good just maybe nmot on time

Bill (Plainfield)

I think the Hawks shouldn't trade any of the d-men before the season. With Montador's concusion issues and with Rozsival and Brookbank being nothing more than bottom-pairing guys themselves, I like the idea of having a three-man rotation. I also like the idea of Olsen getting another year to develop in Rockford with Clendening. Depth at D is important, and if all goes good come February, there will be lots of teams looking to trade for one of those guys and overpay. Your thoughts?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:15 PM)

Its absolutely the thought around the can never have enough capable D or experience back there...but they wont keep 9 on the roster so yeah, olsen would have to go down...I dont have a problem with that..its a long season..if defense is a problem, you can bring him up and get rid of whoever isnt playing well...

Patrick (Aurora)

Jesse,I'm going to try to look at the bright side of a lockout; I think I kind of like the idea of the shortened season because it means less wear and tear on Kieth and Seabrook since they probably are going to play 30 minutes a game again. This way they'll be fresher for the playoffs... Eh, I'm grasping at straws to find anything good from this lockout.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:17 PM)

Grasping a little because isnt the biggest beneficiaries of that thinking the teams that went deep into the playoffs? If this was the year after the Hawks won the Cup..then it might be great for them but right now its just as good or better for L.A. both ways

TO.Hawks.Fan (Toronto)

An abnormally high # of teams have signed their 1st round picks this year, even if those players weren't going to be playing in the NHL. Any idea of why the Hawks haven't signed Teravainen yet (and when/if you think they will)?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:19 PM)

Simply no reason to..Tevo's side is adamant about not coming over any time, and this is just a guess, they might want incentives like a top 5 or 10 pick cause that was what he was projected to be and if he lights it up in Finland, that might be the case...not sure the answer but dont think its an issue..

Kevin (Buffalo, NY)

What happens with Bollig, Shaw, Hayes, and Olsen? Will they make the team after training camp or be sent back down to the minors?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:20 PM)

During a lockout they will play in the minors...when we start up...Shaw is a near lock..after that, its a numbers game so cant tell you for sure..all have their roles and would prob be up and down..Bollig prob is in..they need a 4th line guy like him...not sure on Hayes or Olsen cause of numbers

TimC (Chicago)

I bought tickets this year. If the season or my game is cancelled I will get my money back correct?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:21 PM)

NO they keep it the back of your kidding. of course

Steve (Oak Lawn)

Obvious one first. Who's the odd man out with the addition of Rozsival?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:21 PM)

Read my blog from yesterday..its either Montador (most likely) or Olsen...unless there is a trade

Matt (Bucktown)

Good work covering the Hawks, hopefully they start sooner than later. Why does everyone always want to bypass the players we have at the NHL level and start inexperienced and unproven AHL players...

Jesse Rogers
  (2:23 PM)

Ha. Cause the unknown is sometimes better than the known? I think when youve had enough of Frolik or whoever people turn to the next guy..its natural..not always going to better and certainly not right away..but there is something about unknown youth..waiting for the next great player...can you say SAAD!!

Meaghan (Des Moines)

Will the Blackhawks make any moves to get a second line center? Or what are their plans?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:24 PM)

It doesnt look like it. I say its Kruger

Jim Clarendon Hills (Hinsdale)

crazy question Jesse but do you ever see Mark Bergevin returning to Chicago? He certainly has his hands full as boss in storied Montreal, his hometown too his relationship pretty strong here with owners and even a possible back-up plan to Stan?..... maybe.....someday?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:24 PM)

Anything is possible..Everyone likes him..if he has a decent run in MTL, you never know.

Kathy Kinney (Genoa)

Hi Jesse <3 <3 missed you over the summer and am THRILLED that the season is going to start. when do you see the season starting? Any change the training camp festival will still happen next week?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:25 PM)

I say worst case we start around dec.1 maybe a bit later..worst case...there is always a chance but I doubt it gets settled..simply put, major philosophy changes would have to happen...

Jesse Rogers
  (2:25 PM)

I say worst case we start around dec.1 maybe a bit later..worst case...there is always a chance but I doubt it gets settled..simply put, major philosophy changes would have to happen...

Kevin (Peotone)

Two parter: 1. will the schedule need to be completely redone if time is lost? Or would they just lop off the games that need to be missed? 2. The Hawks sent out their season's tickets already... seems like an extremely big expense to have to redo and resend all tickets. Might they know something???

Jesse Rogers
  (2:26 PM)

They dont know anything..have to proceed like normal until told differently...they would redo the schedule..have to..would be uneven games against opponenets etc.

Joe Koperski (Lisle)

Huge fan of yours Jesse, wondering about the Hawks Training Camp Festival next week, do you think it will happen??

Jesse Rogers
  (2:27 PM)

I mean Im going to say No, but thats just based on this thing looking bad at the moment..but there is conversation going on as we speak so maybe there is movement...its possible.

Hannah (Champaign, IL)

How united are the owners in the negotiations? I have heard everything from they are just as united as the players to only a few actually agreeing with what they offered the NHLPA.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:28 PM)

I think not complelely united but none are going to scoff at saving/making more money...big differnce is boig market vs small market..diff agendas I I would say kind of united but when told how much they can save by playing hard ball, they have no issues sticking with the plan

Colin (Naperville)

Jesse, I always thought Tallon was responsible for putting the hawks in a bad position financially but now its looking more and more like he was better at his job then Bowman. Any chance Bowman gets replaced after this season?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:31 PM)

Of course there is always a chance but I would not bet on it...we'll have to see how the season plays out...Tallon had a lot of "intagibles" which sounds weird to say about GM..players liked him and wanted to play for him...and he had an eye for talent and makeup of a player, etc. but he did handcuff doubt...he skipped several 2nd contracts to players and gave them third contract type money..its actually something the league is trying to deal with in a way in these negotiations...anyway, the proof is on the ice...they won a cup with dale's team and now stan has a high bar to reach

Dane (Avondale)

How will the new CBA affect the hawks in the future? Will they be handcuffed in any way salary cap wise with their big contracts or limited as far as future signings?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:33 PM)

Impossible to know..they wont have to rid players because of it but yeah it could change the future of things, etc. Dont know

Rick (Downtown)

If you were a guy like Toews or Kane, would it be worth risking injury to you to play in Europe or the KHL during a lock-out?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:35 PM)

If I wanted to make some money, sure? Players dont think like that too often...they just can get injured here too...I dont believe that will be a factor

John (Arlington Heights)

With the signing of Rozsival, what do you think is the likeliest outcome: (1) Olsen goes to minors; (2) Montador goes to minors and Hawks eat his salary; (3) trade; or (4) other?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:36 PM)

Probably 1 or 2 or something else with Montador...that might be the first option..

Eric (Chicago)

Jesse, can you explain why all negotiations wait until what seems is the last minute? If I'm the commish or NHLPA rep or whoever, I'm starting these talks a year away so there wouldn't be any stoppages. No matter the sport, they always take place in hour 23. It sucks and hockey, it seems, that the fan base has never been they realize the fans are fed up and just want to see a great sport?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:37 PM)

It is silly...guess no one feels the pressure until there is money to be lost..I think they should have had the previous contract expire after the Cup like the other least a lockout that begins in spring/summer makes things more urgent...NBA and NFL lockout began at beginning of offseason, not at end...

Dane (Avondale)

If the season is truncated, Would the NHL try and squeeze games together as the nba did? I only ask because of the Derrick rose injury. Many people seemed to believe his injury was a direct result of this, and hockey is much more physical.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:39 PM)

I doubt it would be 3 in 3 nights like in the NBA but there will be more games in shorter time...its possible you could see 2 games "series" ya know where the hawks go to det and play on back to back nights there or 2 in 3 days or something...

Brad (Washington, DC)

What are the potential implications of players going overseas in a short lockout? Could anyone end up accidentally out of the NHL all season because of the contract they sign?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:40 PM)

I simply dont know for sure but I highly doubt it...

Jesse Rogers
  (2:42 PM)

Tweets from NY say both sides have made counter I said before the gap is so wide unless there is a philosophy change on one side's part I cant see it coming to an end in the coming days but we'll see

Jesse Rogers
  (2:43 PM)

Thats it for today..thanks for the questions...its too nice out to talk hockey right? Never! IF there is no lockout we'll do it again next week just days before training camp..follow me on twitter @espnchihawks and read my blog for the latest..have thoughts on rozsival signing, etc. talk to you later
