Chat with Calvin Watkins

Calvin Watkins
  (3:01 PM)

Welcome to our first chat of the season. Well, our first Friday afternoon chat. Let's get it going.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that the Dallas Cowboys will go to the Super Bowl This Season?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:03 PM)

Chris,I don't believe they will win the Super Bowl this season. Jason Garrett is doing a nice job of fixing the franchise after four seasons of Wade Phillips. The talent is all over the place but we're not sure if this team is mentally tough to withstand adversity late in the season. At best, the Cowboys will be 9-7.

Vinnie Vinci (Laurence Harbor, New Jersey)

Hi Calvin,Can you tell me why Dallas keeps using Felix Jones as a kick returner? He looks hesitant almost every time he returns a kick

Bbryant Williams (Orangeburg, SC)

Cowboys in the house. Any injury updates Calvin

Calvin Watkins
  (3:13 PM)

I think most kick returners are cautious when they start to run toward the field. I think Jones has lost a burst because of years of injuries to his legs. He's a smart returner he just doesn't have the skill set to do it at a high level right now.

Chase (Dallas)

Cal, are they really going to get Jenkins on the field at CB at the expense of Mo Claiborne? That, along with using Mo as a Kick Returner, seems like a terrible idea!!

Calvin Watkins
  (3:15 PM)

Jenkins will see some snaps on defense in the dime package. He'll be asked to cover some tight ends in one-on-one. Claiborne will stay on the field and might even get a sit down for Jenkins for about two or three plays. No biggie. Let's not forget that Jenkins is a pretty good corner. I would say Jenkins is better than Scandrick.

Will....VA.. [via mobile]

Do you see the O line playing better this week....GO COWBOYS...

Calvin Watkins
  (3:17 PM)

After watching the Bears offensive line give up seven sacks, the Cowboys line looks pretty good. The Cowboys offensive line struggled to open running lanes against the Giants but did fine in pass protection. Seattle is a fast physical defense and while it's not as good as the Giants, the Cowboys will have some issues.

Brett (Dallas)

Looking at the difficulty of the Cowboys schedule in November and early December, do you think we need to be 4-1 at the bye?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:21 PM)

To be honest the Cowboys have a chance to go 4-0 before the bye. Right now they had an impressive showing against the Giants. Dallas should beat Seattle and Tampa Bay the next two weeks. Chicago on Monday Night Football will be a difficult task. If Dallas is 4-0 it could shape the rest of the season.

Larry C (Texas City,Tx)

Do you think the Cowboys will make an attempt to resign Mike Jenkins? He appears to be really unhappy.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:23 PM)

I doubt it. The Cowboys like Jenkins but not enough to give him a long-term contract. The future at corner is Scandrick, Carr and Claiborne.

Lanes (Dallas)

Calvin didn't you see the team going 10-6 this year? What changed?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:24 PM)

Yes, 10-6 when the schedule came out but after training camp my opinion of the team and the division changned.

johnny (sulphur springs tx)

do you think the cowboys have an edge in this game? and if so what is it

Calvin Watkins
  (3:25 PM)

Talent. The QB, RB, WR, OLB,CB are better.

Lila Ann (Hawaii)

Hi Calvin,When do u think RATLIFF will be back on the field and how bad is WARES hamstring at this point

Calvin Watkins
  (3:29 PM)

Ware is fine. He'll play on Sunday. Ratliff is out. He's got a 2-4 week injury and he won't play this week. Expect him to make the Tampa Bay game in Week 3.

chris (NJ)

do you think witten will be a factor in this weeks game?..or just a decoy like last week?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:32 PM)

I thought Witten was a little rusty last week. Decoy, nope. he's feeling better and should produce.

Zach Barlage (Chester, PA)

The play of the CBs seems to have Bruce Carter, who has really impressed me with his athleticism and closing speed, under the radar, thoughts on Carter?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:36 PM)

I like Bruce Carter, very athletic and seems to find the ball. He's getting plenty of snaps in the base defense, more than Dan Conner, as it should be.

Dave (New Boston, Texas)

Who do you think will win the starter at center this year?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:37 PM)

Well, Phil Costa win the gig. But a back injury forced him out.Ryan Cook takes over the job now.

Lila Ann (Hawaii)

Hey Cal,U know after watching the BEARS vs GB game last night this topic has been really irritating me only b/c it has happen with TONY & our O-LINE the media is making a big issue regarding him yelling at his TEAM-MATES but hell yeah i would too giving up a sack or 2 is okay but 7! how much of it is CUTLERS fault vs the O-LINE????? IMHO i think the 0-LINE is responsible for 98% of it.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:39 PM)

I mentioned that to Romo today. Players are gonna yell at each in the middle of the game, sort of like sports writers. Bottom line.

Stephen (Tyler, TX)

I like Romo but when do you think Dallas will start thinking about the next QB ? Could we see them drafting one high net year?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:40 PM)

Not happening. He's going to get a contract extension, probably three more years then retire.

Scott (Houston)

Once again Dez disappeared in the second half last week. Should we expect this again all year?

Calvin Watkins
  (3:40 PM)

Garrett has to find a way to get Bryant into the offense more often. If not then these second half disapearing acts will continue.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:42 PM)

Some news to tell ya about. Jay Ratliff out with a hamsting. Phil Costa is out with a strained lower back. Matt Johnson is also out with a hamstring.

Calvin Watkins
  (3:42 PM)

Thanks for playing. See ya next week.
