Just finished taping Football Today, so a few min behind here. But let's get this rolling!
Which team has surprised you the most so far this season?
KC-in a negative way. Because of all the D injuries, I could excuse their Week 1 performance-particularly the 2nd half. But they were just awful in every way vs. Buff.
who will end their career as the better all time quarterback in your opinion, tom brady or peyton manning? thanks matt
Obviously a brutal question and I am nuts for even selecting it, but I suppose Brady because I think he has more left in the tank.
Torrey Smith slow start so far. Your thoughts on him ROS
He will be okay. Philly is a brutal matchup and I am not yet convinced that Smith is yet ready to consistently beat great press coverage-plus I don't think BALT trusted their protection vs. great Philly pass rush. But Flacco loved Smith in preseason...I think that continues-soon
Is M.Colston healthy? Pretty slow start to the season.
Doesn't quite look it to me, but he was never the most explosive and has had a ton of work done on his knees...maybe that is just what he is at this advanced stage of his career? I also think he-and rest of Saints O-is really missing a true deep threat right now to open room.
Andrew Luck hitting the clutch pedal last week! Think he has a good chance at leading the Colts to victory against JAX this week?
Great chance. JAX really got crushed this past week and they are dealing with plenty of injuries. I certainly like IND's passing game better than JAX's.
Falcons @ Chargers, what do you see as the keys to this game of two 2-0 teams?
Haven't dug into it a ton though, but I think SD could win this game....mostly because of their pass rush/front 7. ATL is good, but a smidge overrated to me.
Are WAS's latest injuries big enough to consider them for the #1 overall pick or is RG3 too good to let that happen?
Nah, RG3 is too good for that. Huge losses to their D-and a real shame. But WASH still wins 6ish
are we finally going to see a 2 game pre-season schedule 2013.??and a 18 game regular season..?
I hope not. I know fans hate paying regular season prices for preseason games-and that does stink. But I think we/coaches/teams need four games to really evaluate the bottom half of the roster and get rookies ready. And 18 games is just so many...think we would have such beat up teams by playoff time.
Colts fans know that the O-line should be the biggest focus next season, but on the D-side of the ball most important to pick up DL,OLB,nickel CB or a Safety?
Don't have much to add to that, but they will need everything on D except OLB I bet in some way shape or form. Add RB to your list as well. This is gonna take some time!
How good does Ryan Clark make me look?
It is certainly a factor! Clark played a great game vs. the Jets too. Underrated all around guy that does allow #43 to really freelance.
Is it time to worry about Fred Davis yet? You would thing a TE like that would be a rookies best friend.
It doesn't add up to me. I thought Davis would be Shanny's S Sharpe honestly. Extreme talent. Early yet, but yes, time to worry.
Is the latest rookie report out?
Prob be out any min...usually comes out on Wed around noon
Many Pats fans are unhappy with Josh McDaniels, Have you noticed a difference in play calling or was it just good execution by unnderrated Cards defense?
Zona's D is great and when your OL is consistently getting whipped, it sure makes play calling difficult! I can't crush McD for this one and if Gostkowski hits the FG (& he is money!) we aren't having this convo.
Which single mistake by replacement officials has had the most significant impact on a game so far?
Not sure you can say one thing, but I think players are very quickly finding out that they get away with skirmishing/fights/etc much more now-has 1 player been ejected yet this year? It will only get worse.
Is Tannehill in your Week 2 Rookie Report?
Honorable Mention...but I am a big Tanny fan here
What do you except from Mikel Leshoure for this week and the rest of the season for the Lions?
I don't expect much right off the bat. Gonna take a few weeks to get back into it. But I think he takes over the starting gig and never lets go-and is a major difference maker in an O that is screaming for help in the running game. Not saying he will be a great player, but will make a big impact-needed!
C'mon Matt! Sando wants to know about your opinions on Bobby Wagner!
I never hold out...esp on my man Sando! I like Wagner and he is in a very good spot behind a great DL. Covers a lot of ground, but not lacking for power. Can be a 3 down LB. But I like Wright best. Wright is becoming a stud.
Victor and Hakeem, or Roddy and Julio?
ATL's WRs. Not an easy choice, but I think Julio will be the best of the group-if he isn't already. Julio does have his inconsistencies still though and ATL's WRs have worse hands. But White is still an extremely tough cover. Cruz would be 4th of those for me.
Your thoughts on the Falcons Defense? Top 5 in the league?
No...middle of the road. I love their 2 LBs (they play a lot of nickel with two LBs on the field on base downs) in Spoon and Nicholas. Abraham still has a lot left, but they need to keep him fresh. Moore has stepped up like I knew he could. CBs are still strong (starters at least), but that Grimes injury is massive.
Is SF right now the best team. We know best team in week 2 means nothing, but do you see them as the best
HOUS has a case too, but yes, SF would be first on my power rankings. Dismantled two pretty good teams in convincing fashion. And Smith looks to be taking the next step-esp mentally.
Are you concerned about Dez Bryant after a slow start or think he breaks out eventually this season?
I think we all should be concerned about Dez-just for knucklehead reasons. Will prob be very inconsistent throughout his career. But as for last week, that is a BRUTAL matchup in SEA against a Top 3 D in my opinion (with SF & HOUS). Dallas just didn't show up from the start on Sunday. Dez will produce.
Someone offered me Chris Johnson for Brandon Lloyd in a standard league. I have Miles Austin and Megatron also.. should i pull the trigger? Thanks M Dub
I love Lloyd and think he is ready to explode...and I am really starting to dislike CJ in a big way. He blames everyone else, but he isn't running with conviction either. Just depends what you have at RB I guess. Let's not get crazy with FF ?s though folks
Music selection please. Are you more concerned about Chris Johnson or Ryan Williams?
Right now "When I Come Around" Green Day...more worried about CJ. Again, neither has had good blocking, but I thought Williams was fantastic in the preseason.
Doug Martin --- he runs hard but he's averaging something like 3 yards a carry...does he improve?
He won't ever be a RB that breaks a ton of real long runs, which obviously hurts his YPA, but yes, his average will increase for sure. He is legit.
LOVE GREEN DAY. Great choice.
I have the iPod just on shuffle, but Green Day is exceptional. I wsa very late to the Green Day party, but I dig them for sure.
How soon until the Packers Offense takes off?
Any second now...they will be elite again. Amazingly, Rodgers has been not-superman
Oh, going to throw this out there-was asked on the radio which QB has played the best so far after two weeks. Who is your vote? I went with Big Ben off the top of my head and after much thought am sticking with it.
Should the Bears be concerned with Forte's injury?
They have a great replacement plan in place. I like Bush quite a bit. He isn't the pass catcher Forte is-few are...but CHI will be okay for a short stretch.
Jason Kelce's injury affects the Eagles to what extent?
Losing a starting OC always worries more more from a mental/intangibles standpoint than just his ability on the field. Kelce is a decent young player who fits the sceme well, but far from a great one.
Bob Griffin the Third?
He certainly has exceeded expectations, but his degree of difficulty of throws really isn't very steep....Ben's has been rediculously steep.
What is Alex Smith doing differently so far this season that is making believers out of you and all the other sceptics?
Didn't say I was a believer! But I think he now has an excellent feel for Harbaugh's O-doing much more presnap to get his team into the proper play calls. And his ability to not make mistakes is rather amazing.
Do you see Greg Jennings returning to have a big impact on the offense of are they looking to develop Nelson and Cobb to be starters?
Betting this is Jennings' final year in GB and they are well prepared for his departure. But he is a great player and certainly a welcome addition back. I love Cobb though...
Matt Stafford off to a slow start. Are his mechanics ok or just early season rust?
I very much think he will be fine, but he seems tentative and rather confused out there at times. I think teams are trying even more than ever to take away Calvin-and the Lions/Stafford are not responding well...at least by their standards. Also, they need something from the running game-just too much on a still-young QB's plate. I think we forget at times how young Stafford actually is in terms of his age and also # of starts
Is Peyton Manning now basically Chad Pennington?
Sorta. But his arm can stil improve. And Manning does "Everything else" WAY better than Pennington-or anyone for that matter.
Percy Harvin is a top __ WR.
Chargers Front 7 looks much better than last year, anybody stand out to you?
It very much does. Depth stands out in that Front 7 for sure. They can bring waves at their opponent. The Rooks stand out too: Ingram and Reyes.
Is the Welker/Belicihek situation egos run amok?
Doubtful....we do know that BB isn't especially open about injuries-that is one theory. But before, I just think they are changing how they play O-more running, take less pressure off OL. And with more running, Welker isn't as valuable as he can't block and is/was just an extension of their run game.
NYG or CAR tomorrow night?
My preview for that game should be posted-I will Tweet out the link after this. But I took CAR...semi reluctantly. Eli is tough to bet against, as is that DL-but NYG has a lot of injuries and I am a CAR believer overall.
What do you think of McClellin so far? He's got great explosion and closing speed.
He does. Very athletic. I like. And I like that he doesn't have to play every down. Bump Izzy inside and come off the edge on psasing downs while also working in some on early downs. Encouraging. That Bears DL is truly great.
Are the rams for real? thoughts on sam bradford?
Big picture, the Rams are real. SO many draft picks at their disposal going forward. Need to really work on that OL. I am mixed on Bradford. He played very well this week and I have been a huge supporter of his. Still am to a degree, but now-I just have more doubts for the first time. Has taken such a beating...curious if he can withstand it.
Who will be the first qb to be benched? Wilson, Locker, Cassel (no backup), Kolb (upon Skelton return), other?
Hmmm....none of those are jumping out at me. Not sure the Zona situation counts. C Palmer?
Which rookie do you think was the most impressive in week 2?
For just Week 2, I will go with Richardson. I love this guy-total animal.
Can Seattle's tall CBs keep up with my shiftiness?
No, but you are going to get banged around quite a bit and Rodgers better get the ball out quick!
Why has McFadden struggled to find any room on the ground through 2 games? Good defensive fronts or major probs for Raiders?
Well, they installed a new run scheme-zone team now. I think that transition has not gone well yet. I have no worries big picture with McF, but I also think no one really fears OAK's passing game. Not sure why you change the run game after it worked well either...
Today's Podcast is up! http://espn.go.com/espnradio/play?id=8398690
Which Brandon Weeden are we most likely to see the rest of the season: the Week 1 or Week 2 version?
Couldn't have been two more different Ds he (and Flacco) played against. The Eagles are going to torment everyone-esp in pass game. Thumbnail on Weeden: He can throw if he has a clean pocket and time...so if the pass rush matchup is bad for Browns, Weeden will really struggle.
Bills O-line best in the league?
Oh no. I like Glenn-see my Rook Report. But that scheme is totally designed to mask their issues in protection by getting it out super quick. Not saying it is a bad OL, but Gailey doesn't trust them totally or he would challenge them more.
Can the Colts win with the RBs they have in the near future?Colts fans down on Donald Brown but Jim Brown couldn't run behind this line.
When rebuilding, in most cases RB would be my last piece of the puzzle. But I think Brown is the defintiion of "Just a Guy"
can Brady still throw a deep ball?
I think...but am not positive. Does seem a bit off in that department the last year or so.
How far is Arizona's D behind your precious Seahawks? If Kolb plays half decent do we have a shot at the west?
Not far at all. Lack the edge rushers-that is really my only knock on Zona's D.
I know the bears o-line aint the best, but Cutler seems to be blaming others for his own poor play. Agree or disagree?
Agree...listen to today's podcast. We talk about that very early on in the show.
Fair point on the pass blocking of the Bills, but have you seen the holes they are creating in the run game? You could drive a mac truck through that shiz!
Very true! Can't argue that at all. Glenn is impressive. I also really like Wood and Levitre.
I was extremely impressed with the Bucs D week 1 and extremely upset week 2. Do you this defense as over or under top 15 years end?
Right about there I would say. Very young group and I expect a lot of up and down week to week action from TB. McCoy is the key though...
Calais Campbell most underrated DLinemen? He's only 26.
He is fantastic. I don't know if he is underrated-almost all the great 3-4 DEs are, but Campbell is a big time player. Dockett is no slouch either.
Matty ice has played better that big ben so far this year.
He would have been my 2nd choice. Again, Ben has just making tougher throws.
Aren't we supposed to play to the whistle?
Def play to the whistle, but submarining the OL and QB on a Victory Formation is dirty pool in the NFL
Who do you see emerging as the better TE as season goes on: Bennett,Rudolph or Pitta? All starting very well.
They are, but Rudolph is my choice-by a landslide
Matty Ice has a whole lot less on his plate than Big Ben. Ben is asked to do so much more imo.
Agreed, esp in terms of which throws they attempt. But Ryan has come a long way mentally-esp with their no huddle this year.
I know he has had some problems in the past but is Percy Harvin the scariest guy in the NFL with ball in his hands? He seems like he is a threat to score every time he touches the ball.
Big time. Unlike most super quick little fast guys with amazing vision and elusiveness, Harvin is also really well put together and plays strong. No one quite like him in the league right now.
Hey Matt who is better Tyron Smith or Matt Kalil?
Smith was awesome last year, but he is stil learning LT (didn't even play on left side at USC because of Kalil as I am sure you know Jason)...but I am going to assume it comes for Smith. I have seen him be very succesful in the NFL-haven't seen that yet from Kalil, who is a very good prospect but not exactly O Pace or W Jones. Give me Smith.
Folks, that is a wrap for me! Great chat as always
