Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (11:59 AM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the weekly chat. There's a lot going on in the aftermath of the Martinez-Chavez fight and Pacquiao and Marquez are on tour and there are several fights coming up. So check out all the new blogs and features and news stories, check the sked and the rankings and let's get to it.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Dan IF Chavez jr wouldve won and he tested positive. Would it be changes to a no contest?

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Yes, it would have been overturned. In Nevada they call it a no decision, but same thing. That is what happened when JC tested positive for a diueretic after a 2009 fight with Troy Rowland in Las Vegas. Chavez's win was changed to a no decision.

Mike (Massapequa )

Great heart shown by Lopez time for Canelo to step up the competition. Really enjoyed Paulie doing the commentary what did you think ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Lopez did show tremendous heart, which didn't surprise me. But it was the massive mismatch we all expected. Paulie was good I thought.

Mike (Massapequa )

Maidana-Karras great fight - have you ever seen a ref take a point from each fighter at the same time? Do you think Bayless stopped it a little early?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

I've seen that a few times. He wanted to send a message that he isn't taking any more crap. He made the point and since he took from both didn't impact the outcome, which was good. I thought the stoppage was fine.

JMM (Mexico)

People saying I will win the fourth fight?! Heck i'll drink to that! anyone care to join me?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Urine for everyone!!!!!!!!

Cory (Albany, NY)

Do you think there was too much credit given to Chavez at the end of the fight? After all, Martinez deserves some credit for not running in the 12th

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Martinez has gotten a lot of credit for that but Chavez is not getting too much credit. He did what he had to do at that moment and deserves the credit for doing it, even if he fell slightly short. All I know is that other than the ending of Corrales-Castillo I, that was the most dramatic thing I have ever covered in person.

Brandon (Jacksonville FL)

Dantanimo Bay...Does the news about Jr and weed really surprise you/anybody?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Unfortunately, no.

Tommy Chong [via mobile]

Chavez jr is my favorite fighter.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Dee (San Francisco Ca)

Dan the Man!!In your interaction with Julio Jr how does he come off? The 24/7 episodes showed him to be spoiled, disrespectful and immature. With this latest failed test along with his prior missteps does the guy just not get it and never will?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

I've interviewed Junior several times and first met him several years ago. In person, he comes off as a good kid. From my experience, he has always been respectful with the media and pretty open with his answers. But he obviously has some issues.

jt$ (DC)

In your opinion (not necessarily according to NSAC rules), if JCC jr. actually has a positive test, what punishment do you think is appropriate?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Since this is his second failed drug test in Nevada since 2009 and for the first test he got a seven-month suspension, I think the commission will rightly suspend him longer this time. Taking illegal substances, eventhough pot is not performance-enhancing, is not tolerable. He probably will get a year and will deserve it.

Greg (Armonk, NY)

Another fight with Marquez is exactly the wrong fight for Pac with Mayweather looming. He has a good chance to lose and has almost no chance of looking dominant.

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

Possibly, but Pacquiao was going to fight again this year and not let his career be held up by Floyd, especially since they have no deal or anything remotely close to one. So he will fight. Whatever happens, happens.

Dan (CA)

What's your opinion on a Manny Floyd fight next year? Would it be in the spring?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

If Manny gets past Marquez, ideally it will be in the spring. I just dont see how much longer they can drag this out.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Do you think Broner will sign to fight DeMarco?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I'm sure Adrien would take the fight in a heartbeat. Can't say the same about Golden Boy and Al Haymon.

rp (kcmo)

any wor on kelly pavlik

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

Nothing specific. Sauerland and Top Rank talked about a Kessler fight but nothing came of it.

Brian (Toronto)

Excited for the released of the new Kiss album, in a few weeks ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

YES!

Wes (Richmond, Va)

Dan. Canelo seems to be the most intriguing young fighter out there due to not only his skill but also the potential fights he has on the horizon. Who do you think is next up for him (Mayweather, Cotto, Martinez) ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I dont there is any doubt that at some point next year he will face Mayweather or Cotto, assuming Cotto beats Trout. Either of those fights is huge.

Aaron (MA)

would Canelo fight again this year, do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

There is a possibility of him fighting again in December.

will (edmonton)

Martinez alvarez on cinco de mayo at 154, letttttssssss dooooooo ittttttttt

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Love it.

MacDaddy (Philly)

MacDanny, with Manny recent admissions that he softened his stance on testing and split, who is to blame for this fight not happening, Arum or Floyd??

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

First off, the testing has not been an issue for ages. He simply reiterated that on the ESPN shows yesterday. He also has to fight Marquez. If, after that, Mayweather still resists even with a larger piece of the pie how can you not blame Floyd? But let's see what happens.

Aaron (Cincinnati)

Do you think Roach will stay on with JCC Jr? Seems like a headache he doesn't need.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Roach said he will stay with him, but also vowed to leave if he misses his training sessions. At this point, it doesn't matter though because Chavez is looking at a lengthy suspension.

Tom (Sacramento)

Chances that Bradley vs Guerrero comes off?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Chances that you get hit by lightning today?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Check out my blog on a lot of the stuff I heard about on my recent trip. http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/1932/berto-back-demarco-broner-and-more

Mark (ATL)

Was yesterday's JMM/Pacquiao availability on multiple ESPN platforms a result of the new ESPN/HBO boxing alliance?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

100 percent.

Bruce (Alexandria, VA)

Well, now we know why Chavez Jr. had so much trouble making weight in previous fights. Mmmmmmmmm, munchies!

Joel Julio (Parts Unknown)

Are you going to mention me today?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Ron (Bronx)

Kind of appropriate that Jr. had a roach working his corner wouldn't you say.

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Kind of appropriate that it was a joint promotion.

ojay (Detroit)

Do you know any word on Manny Steward being "seriously ill"?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

Manny has been ill and needed a surgical procedure. Like everyone, I hope he makes a full recovery. Emanuel is one of my all-time favorite people in boxing.

Showtime Executive (Los Angeles, CA)

We are currently in talks to steal Julio Cesar Chavez Jr from HBO. Be sure to check him out this weekend on a very special episode of Weeds

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

PAY THE MAN, SHIRLEY!!!!!!!!!

Matthew (ATX)

What are the chances of Martinez going up to challenge Ward??

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

VERY unlikely, at least for the next fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

By the way, whoever put in that Showtime/Chavez/Weeds comment is now in the Chat Hall of Fame. That is an all-timer.

Ricky (Ny)

Dan at this point would you rather see Floyd vs sergio as opposed to Floyd vs pacman?

Dan Rafael
  (12:16 PM)

No.

Marc (Malden, MA)

With Pacquiao agreeing to whatever drug testing Mayweather wants and now agreeing to give Mayweather a bigger piece of the pie, Mayweather is basically out of excuses, right?

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

One never knows what Floyd will come up with next.

rp (kcmo)

you think cotto will have a problem with trout or is he hand picked

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Trout probably will give him a lot of issues and it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he won.

Brian (NJ)

Who would you pick in a Martinez v Alvarez fight? I believe Martinez would overwhelm Canelo and he also has a better chance of stopping Canelo compared to Chavez

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I would pick Martinez to win easily.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

By the way, the Martinez-Chavez replay is on Saturday night on HBO at 9:30 pm ET/PT. After the replay is the next episode of Fight Game with Jim Lampley and I will be a guest on the show.

Jason (Philly)

Even though unlikely, who do you think wins a Ward-Martinez fight? at 160?168?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

First off if it ever happens it wont be at 160. Ward is not going down. Second, I would make Ward a massive favorite.

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

Here is an update on Martinez's injuries: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8400870/middleweight-titlist-sergio-martinez-faces-knee-surgery

Floyd Mayweather Jr. (Las Vegas)

We all know why the fight hasn't happened. Manny refuses to give me 85% of the British TV money. Oh he has? Manny has refused to give me 90% of Brazilian and Argentinian TV money. Oh he has? Manny's just running scared.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Here's my story on Manny saying he will give Floyd 55% and do whatever testing he wants: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8405784/manny-pacquiao-says-floyd-mayweather-jr-bigger-split-money-potential-fight

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Eric Morel got beat up by Leo Santa Cruz, is it fair to say we've seen the last of Morel?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I doubt he will retire but I hope it's the last time we see him in a world title fight.

Charles (DFW)

Does the recent HBO/ESPN deal allow for ESPN Classic to air any of the HBO library fights that they haven?t been able to in the past?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

That's a good question. I'm not sure.

Jackson (IA)

Considering the rematch will be a MASSIVE payday, a year or two off to let Sergio get a little older may be exactly what Chavez needs...

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Interesting point.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

What are your general thoughts on the GB $100,000 bonus and how it went?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

I liked the idea. It's something used in UFC. However, I thought Maidana deserved the bonus, not Canelo.

Dustin (Ohio)

Dan, are you excited for the Burns/Mitchell fight? I think it has potential for a FOTY candidate. Could either guy fight Broner?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

It's a good fight. I will have to find a web stream on Saturday. Burns could have defended his 130 title against Broner but vacated to avoid the mandatory.

Aaron (Paris)

Dan how big was Prince Nassem in america in his glory days?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Pretty damn big. He drew huge crowds to Madison Square Garden and Boardwalk Hall and had a HUGE HBO deal.

Jason (Philly)

I personally, think Ward has a chance to be one of the BEST EVER...not to get ahead of myself, just my opinion in watching him. Who else is out there for him to fight thats ANOTHER top level competitor? Pascal? Cloud? Neither of these guys are as good as dawson..

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I agree.

John (Deltona, Florida)

Yankees win 5 in a row....just in time....Now they need to seal the deal !!!! 28th World series title on the way...ANDY IS BACK!!!!!

Sean (CT)

Who do you pick to win in tonight's Rosado v Whittaker fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Rosado should win fairly handily IMO.

Martin R (NYC)

Do you think Martinez's star what damaged, improved, or remains the same following this fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

He became a much bigger star.

Gerardo Gil-Leyva (Culiacán, México)

How big Naseem Hamed vs Erik Morales would've been?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

It was discussed but Barrera got the fight.

Dave (Worcester)

Dan, where was Calzaghe rank P4P in his heyday? Just trying to gauge Bunce's thought that he destroys a prime Ward

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Calzaghe, as I recall, was generally a middle of the pack top-10 guy for a few years. I was a Cazalghe fan, lotta respect for him. But as I have said, I believe Ward would have beaten him.

Jim (Santa Monica)

LOVE Burns-Mitchell. Still can't believe it's come off. I think Burns wins close but undeniable UD. Burns just more intelligent in the ring.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

I notice Manuel Charr got some sort of WBC medal placed around his neck after losing to Vitali. Are they giving out participation medals these days?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

For a small sanctioning fee, of course. #WBCisdisgusting

Slater (West by God Virginia)

DTM any idea when the ppv buyrates will come out for martinez jr? Do you think it will do better than Cotto and Margarito last year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Cotto-Margarito 2 is the fight they are projecting it against. According to Arum and HBO, the dish numbers are ahead of Cotto-Margarito. They dont have the cable systems enough yet to make a final number but Cotto-Margarito did about 540,000 and they belive Chavez-Martinez has a great chance to do better than that.

David (Seattle)

When do tickets for Cotto-Trout go on sale? Any word on undercard fights?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

No undercard set yet but they have a news conference in NYC to announce the fight on Monday and then another in Puerto Rico on Tuesday. Tix go on sale Tuesday at 1 pm ET. From the press release: Prices are $500, $300, $200, $100 and $50, not including applicable service charges and taxes. They can be purchased at the Madison Square Garden Box Office, all TicketMaster outlets, TicketMaster charge by phone (866-858-0008) and online at www.ticketmaster.com or www.thegarden.com

LLCoolP (Glasgow)

Pacquiao Marquez doesn't have a belt on the line and it's not an eliminator for a belt, does that mean technically it should be over 10 rounds?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

No, it's a 12-rounder. Nevada sanctions it as a 12-round "special attraction."

Frank Fletcher (NY, NY)

Lopez and Alvarez was a bad fight. Are you disappointed you didn't say so louder from the start?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I thought it was a mismatch from Day 1 and said so.

The WBC (Mexico)

The WBC rejects all Nevada drug testing. Texas is the best drug tester. Chavez retains his belt because Nevada is clearly against Chavez.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Epic. #wbcisdisgusting

Randy (NYC)

The 12th round of Martinez/Chavez was exciting, sure, but Martinez dominated 11/12 rounds and still stood his ground and handled business when he was hurt and exhausted. Chavez didn't deserve the belt and one home run swing with 90 seconds left shouldnt make him worthy of a rematch

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I dont agree. I want to see the rematch. The 12th round was as epic and dramatic as anything I've seen.

Stephen (Topeka)

I was a little disgusted with Chavez being introduced as the champion saturday. Why would HBO allow the Worst Boxing Conglomerate to dictate the introductions. And why did Martinez not take that title and Riddick Bowe it as soon as they put it in his hands.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

HBO doesnt control that. It's up to the promtoers.

Jose Sulaiman (Mexico City)

As we can't clarify Chavez Jr's situation, we are proud to announce that we have decided to award him the amazing WBC Diamond Belt, which he will hold for as long as he's suspended.

john h (augusta ga)

Since it hasn't been said yet, big thumbs up to showtime for showing the Paul Williams interview. One of the best parts about the telecast imo

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Agreed, very good to see that. I thought Jim Gray did a great job.

Derek (Boulder CO)

Any truth to the rumor that JCC Jr. is trying to steal Brandon Rios' Winchell Donut sponsorship?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I can neither confirm nor deny that.

Adam (Chicago)

Lopez was totally mismatched, Al Haymon is supposed to do better than that right? Don't see what value Haymon brought to Lopez.

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

He got him the fight and the biggest purse of his career by more than double.

Van (Phoenix)

I heard a number of you ESPN colleagues say that was one of the best fight atmospheres they've been in. How would you rate it?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Top 5 for sure. Nothing has come close to Mayweather-Hatton but Chavez-Martinez was an all-timer. Up there with fights like Tito Trinidad-Mayorga, Tito-Joppy, Pacquiao-Margarito at Cowboys Stadium, Gatti-Ward 2, De La Hoya-Vargas, Pacquiao-Hatton. Those are some that stand out to me.

Derek (Boulder CO)

How big of hit can Nevada take on Jr.'s purse?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

It can fine him up to 100 percent, although that is extremely unlikely. I would expect at least a 10 percent fine (which would be $300,000).

Horn (Vegas)

Are you a member of Team Sheik?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I'm the real.

Michael (Cincinnati)

What's up with Chavez refusing to get on a scale before the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Nothing. Martinez didnt weigh either. Lots of guys decline.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Check out my feature on tomorrow's Burns-Mitchell fight in Scotland: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8406130/mates-ricky-burns-kevin-mitchell-meet-ring

Rob (Miami)

DTM, I was never a big fan of P-Will but with the attitude he has carried since his accident has made him an inspiration. Props to him for being so positive; he even mentioned in an interview that he doesn't want anyone to beat Martinez so he can finish their trilogy. You have to give that guy credit. P-WILL = inspiration

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Couldn't agree more.

Ron (NYC)

Who do you think has the higher grade reefer, Arum, DiBella, or Jr.?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Wow, that is a tough question.

Ricky (UK)

Remember dano, there's only one....

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

So I've been told.

Horn (Vegas)

When Jr. sent his dad to rehab, he should of have joined him and made it a father and son activity.

Gary Burton (Beaverton, OR)

Dan, do you think Chad Dawson will take a rematch with Andre Ward if Ward would be willing to fight @ 175 lbs. AND away from Oracle Arena, or is he just so mentally beaten now that it's unlikely?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Dude the rematch is absolutely pointless for the time being. Whatever the weight, Ward gave Chad a beat down. It's not a marketable fight whatsoever. Been there, done that -- in onesided, ass kicking fashion.

JOE (NH)

Does Martinez stay at #3 or does he swap with Manny?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

You'll see next Wednesday when the new p4p comes out. There will be some changes.

Sam (NO)

Do state commissions usually honor other states suspensions, or will Chavez Jr. just fight in Texas whenever he wants?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

If Junior is suspended in Nevada for the drug test other states are obligated to honor it under federal law.

Jim (Philly)

Has Arum ever reeked of weed at a press conference?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Not that I ever smelled. But I also dont make it a habit to smell Bob at press conferences.

Ryan (Worcester, MA)

I know weed is illegal, but still, why bother testing for it in sports? What negative effect does it have on a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

First of all, it's illegal. Second, they do a drug screen that tests for all kinds of illegal drugs, pot, coke, anphetamines, etc...

Doug (Lexington)

I think what has me most excited about Rios-Alvarado is how excited they both are about making it a war.

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Agreed. I am going to that show and cant wait.

Derek (Boulder CO)

I'm glad Chavez could put the bong down long enough to talk about sending his dad to rehab on 24/7.

team jmm (boca raton,florida)

I would like to see a gennady golovkin vs sergio martinez fight what do you think dan.

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I'd love to see it too.

Aaron (Paris)

Have you met Muhammad Ali? And if so do you have any interesting personal stories about Ali?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

I met Ali once years ago at one his daughter's fights. I was pretty much in awe.

C.M. (Canada)

I'm not too big on Pacquiao-Marquez IV, but have never heard Pacquiao himself openly referring to needing to be the 'old Manny' again. It's usually ROach doing the talking. I think (and hope) that says something.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Hopefully. I just hope somebody gets a knockout.

MacDaddy (Philly)

King Freak, other states must honor, but couldn't junior fight in Mexico??

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

He could do that, yes. And if he did, it would make being licensed again in the US very difficult.

Dave (Worcester)

Will Ward be a HBO regular now or was it just a one fight deal.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

He'll be a regular.

Tommy (Detroit)

God of Thunder, were you one of the people in the media that was out of their chair during the last round of Martinez/JCCjr??

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Briefly, because people in front of me stood up.

Ryan (UK)

Froch vs Bute atmosphere?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Also tremendous.

Rob (Miami)

DTM, after hearing Sulaiman go crazy over the Chavez drug test (and hearing him over the years), I think he has better stuff than Arum, Dibella or Jr.

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Sulaiman is a corrupt gas bag. #wbcisdisgusting

Brinsley (St Albans, UK)

Prime Calzaghe vs prime Froch, who wins?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Calzaghe.

J (ATL)

Hey Dan, what's with the Showtime crews right now? Everytime I watch a SHO event they have a new host and Mauro Raunallo has been calling action. Has Gus Johnson moved on too? Saw him calling college football. If so, never got the chance to seem him pass out for forgetting to breath while screaming

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

Obviously, Showtime's broadcast team is in transition, especially with Tarver out.

Gerardo (AZ)

Death, taxes, and Dan Rafael chats on Fridays!

Ruben (Houston, TX.)

Dan, any truth to the rumor that Chavez Jr. contacted you to train at your BBQ next year?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Jacob (Clovis, CA.)

Dan, how deafening was that crowd when Martinez went down in the 12th. About 5 guys in my living went beserk when it happened, I can't imagine how loud it must've been inside the arena. You compared it to a jet at full throttle. Are you serious, was it that loud?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Honestly, it was the single most incredible moment of a fight I have EVER been at. The surge of electicity was absolutely incredible. It was like sitting in a car in neutral and all of a suddden you're going 200 mph in a split second. Absolutely incredible. You cover all the crap fights, all the politics, all the bad stuff just to maybe someday get that moment. I might cover boxing another 20 years and never feel anything like that again. That's how good it was. And that is why I want the rematch, just on the off chance those moments can be repeated. I wish all fight fans could have been in that arena in the final 90 seconds of the 12th round because it was as good as it will ever be.

Adrian (Cruz)

What are you going to do when you hit 100k followers on Twitter? I believe we got a picture of your cats for 10k.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Still 27,000 to go. @danrafaelespn

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Last week, Joe Cortez refereed his last fight. Where does Cortez rank among the best referees ever?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

For a period of time Joe was probably one of the top 2-3 referees in boxing. He had a great career.

JOE (NH)

anything scheduled for foxwoods?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Sept. 29 HBO show that DiBella is doing.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

Do you, Mannix and Iole ever hang out on your own time?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Sure. I had dinner with Kevin when we were in Oakland for Ward-Dawson, for example.

Juan (San Diego)

SHARE THIS WITH THE FREAKS! It speaks to what you just wrote, which was beautiful (I was in the arena as well).http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPwVR8JeDhE

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Tremendous.

Brent (Anaheim, CA)

What's with Showtime displaying tweets at the bottom of the screen while the fight is actually on? Like I care what some random moron thinks who's busy tweeting during the fight.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

I agree. I hate it and I have told them that when I was asked my opinion.

The Met (T.O.)

Your opinion on GBP's phony baloney announcement of a sell-out when plenty of tickets were still available on Ticketmaster?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

It is what it is. I know after the so-called sellout, hours later you could still go on Ticketmaster and buy blocks of tickets in various price sections. I know that because I saw it on my own computer. Whatever. I don't care.

Carl (Richmond)

The recent ESPN poll had more fans voting Winky Wright NOT a HOFer. Are you surprised?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Yes, but that makes difference to me. Those folks dont vote. Fortunately, I do.

Jack (Washington)

Why the inordinate amount of fights on the West Coast? What happened to MSG, Atlantic City, Memphis, Foxwoods, etc?

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Foxwoods has an HBO show next week, MSG has been undergoing rennovations but has Cotto on Dec. 1. AC has had fights this year and probably will host Broner on Nov 17. So not sure what your point is.

Horn (Vegas)

I was there and have been at the Thomas & Mack 100s of times for various events including Pac/Marales 2. Never heard a pop that loud.

Chris (Overland Park, kS)

Aren't there suppose to be $200 tickets to Pacquiao Marquez IV? Ticketmaster shows range starts $400.

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

The cheapest tix are $200.

Ricky (Ny)

Dan just want to thank you for always covering boxing to the best! Anytime a rumor comes out I check to see if you can confirm those runors to even take them serious.keep up the good work

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Thanks.

Wilkie (Toronto)

Have fighters ever tried to bribe you for a HOF vote?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

LOL, no.

George (California )

Whats the better card tonight? Showtime or CNBC?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

You mean NBC Sports Net. Frankly, neither one does a lot for me.

JOE (NH)

DTM have you ever said who you think will win between Pacquiao and mayweather?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Not publicly, no. When they make the fight I will write my prediction before the fight.

Ron (Bronx)

Dan, Can you picture this, Arum and Jr. chilling at Arum's house, Bob, being the maniac he is, yelling at Jr., Julio!!! stop bogarting that joint my friend...

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

LOL!

Mike (Tampa)

Hey Dan, IF Floyd fights again this year, can you give us a few names you would expect him to step in the ring with?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

He's not fighting this year.

Lee (Los Angeles, CA)

Think we'll ever see Maidana vs Matthysse? How epic of a fight would that be and who would you pick?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

I want to see it. At this point, hard to pick against Matthysse though. But if they ever fight it will be epic.

Dazzed (San Jose,Ca)

Dan did Lou Dibella piss his pants in that twelve round?

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

I think a No. 2.

Mike (Tampa)

Any news on Tim Bradley now that Manny picked JMM?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Dec. 15 on HBO, opponent TBA.

Horn (Vegas)

When your contract is up, are you bringing Al Haymon to the negotiation table with you?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

LOL. No. I already have a great agent.

The Met (T.O.)

How long do you reckon until Martinez gets his WBC title stripped again?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

With the wretched WBC, I'm surprised they haven't already.

Nick (DE)

What is your prediction for Burns-Mitchell?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

I lean to Burns by decision in a good fight.

C.M. (Canada)

Great article by Keith Idec that you tweeted the other day. Thanks for that. Hopefully Oscar and GBP take note, but that is extremely wishful thinking.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

So are you told to prep for "The Fight Game" or do you just go on with the expectation that you'll talk about whatever topic Jim has that day?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

I have a rough idea of our topic and I would imagine I'll have a discussion with Jim or a producer when I get to the studio.

Dazzed (San Jose,Ca)

Does Khan really fight Soto next?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Not on HBO. If Showtime wants to buy that crap that's up to them.

Mike (DC)

Does Roy Jones Jr still plan on continuing his boxing career?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Seems so. He told me he wants to win a cruiserweight title.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Dan, do you read the comments posted on your blog?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

From time to time.

Alex (Lancashire UK)

RIP to NFL Films' Steve Sabol. I'm sure we wouldn't have the great sports shows inc 24/7 etc without his great influence.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Good point. I am a huge NFL Films fan. Used to watch the shows on ESPN all the time when I was a kid. Would stay up every Super Bowl eve and watch the marathon of Super Bowl hili shows.

Jose Sulaiman (WBC)

The WBC Board of Governors has ruled that Sergio threw far too many punches during his fight with Chavez. I am disappointed to announce that the WBC is therefore stripping Sergio Martinez of his world championship to punish him for his poor conduct.

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Epic.

Rob (Miami)

DTM, any news on which network is picking up the Cotto-Trout fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Showtime. Read this: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/1932/berto-back-demarco-broner-and-more

California Boxing Fan (California)

I will make it a point to watch you on the Fight Game. Will it just be you and Jim Lampley talking for 30 mins or will there be other segments? Also will you take Jim to task for his Gatti lists? I know a couple were pretty questionable.

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

I am part of one of the segments of the show.

Mark (ATL)

After Nevada fines JCC Jr. (upwards of $300,000), where does the money go? Does Nevada boxing commission have a secret slush fund?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

It goes to the state's general fund.

Bree (LA)

Any word on how serious Sergio's knee injury is?

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

Read this: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8400870/middleweight-titlist-sergio-martinez-faces-knee-surgery

Mike (PA)

Is HBO televising Klitschko vs Wach?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

No, it'll be on Epix.

Alan (Winston Salem)

You'd probably have more Twitter followers if you weren't so petty about blocking people.

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

You're right. But it's so much fun blocking morons.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (Las Vegas, NV)

Ok, you got me! I wasn't moving the couches around to train. I was moving them because I lost my weed stash.

Julio Cesear Chavez JR. (Las Vegas)

Dan, I'll bring the brownies at your next BBQ

Nick (DE)

Next weeks epix telecast, will it just be Rahman-Povetkin, or will the Pulev fight be televised as well?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Depending on timing, Pulev might be shown. Not certain at this point. But I am preparing as though we are showing it because you never know and you gotta be prepared.

ron (bethel, Ct)

speaking of east coast fights the Oct 20th card at the barclay center is shaping up to be a good ticket to buy.....has it been confirmed danny jacobs will be fighting?? It will be great to see him in the ring after all he has gone through!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Yes, he is on the card.

Cory (Albany, NY)

Thanks Dan, I had the Showtime "Weeds" comment. My friend owes me two drinks because I said I'd have a "Pay the man, shirley" this week.

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Drink up.

Ryan (UK)

Ricky Hatton selling out a 20,000 seat stadium without an opponent or under card being named! One Ricky Hatton!

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Very impressive. It's like Prince Naseem used to do back in the day.

Rob (Miami)

DTM, Sulaiman said that he was going to help Chavez Jr. resume his "brilliant career". #wbcisdigusting

RonMack (Cincinnati)

Since there is now a pre-retirement Ricky Hatton and a post-retirement Ricky Hatton, does the count change at all?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

No. There is only one Ricky Hatton.

Julio Cesear Chavez JR. (Las Vegas )

Where the weed at?

ed (butler,pa)

dan, what round did martinez break his hand?

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

They say fourth round. Hurt the knee on the knockdown in rd 12.

Mike (Massapequa )

How about Arum saying he wouldn't pass a test for weed !! Classic

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

I was cracking up when he said that and he was too.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Who owns the rights to a fight, the network televising it or the promoter?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

The promoter generally with the network having certain rights.

Andy (Philly)

What would you think about a crossroads fight between Amir Khan and Victor Ortiz?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Love to see it.

Peter (NYC)

Props to Marquez on his English. Had that interview with Stephen A Smith and Skip Bayless without any assistance.

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Marquez's English has been steadily improving for the past few years.

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

I just got a note from BHop, who tells me he is going to fight again in January.

Lance (Orange)

Sergio HOF-worthy yet?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

He's gettin' there.

Mike (Tampa)

Any idea on an opponent for BHop?

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Not at this point. You know what I know.

Jeff (Gilbert AZ)

Dan,Ward can sell tickets in Oakland but do you think he will ever be able to sell a PPV or sell out a Vegas arena as an "A" side of a match?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

The jury is out.

Mike (Philly)

Read in the rankings the other day that Berto might come back against K-9, how real of a chance is there of that happening? Seems to me that Berto's first fight back after suspension shouldn't be a title fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

Very good chance.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

DTM, while he won last week, I have to say I'm off the 'Rigondeaux beats anyone at 122' bandwagon. As good as his D is, if Marroquin could rock him like he did, I've gotta think Mares, Donaire, etc can put him down and out

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

You are not alone. I have heard the same from others.

Orlando (Miami )

Read your monday scorecard Dan, and I agree, Maidana needs to be matched correctly. We get incredible fights when he faces guys who resort to toe-to-toe action; Ortiz, Khan, Morales. Out of the realistic fights at 147 I think a bout with Selcuk Aydin would produce the most fireworks.

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

That would be a helluva fight.

Steve (Hartford)

Is Cotto/Trout on regular Showtime?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Yes. As opposed to irregular Showtime?

These are My Readers (USA)

While you were on your road trip did you call Thunder and Popo to see if they were ok?

Dan Rafael
  (1:33 PM)

I checked in with Mrs. DTM.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Canelo sure looks good but it's time for him to face a top opponent. I

Julio Cesar Chavez JR (California)

The lowest point of my fight against Martinez was that I lost. The highest was me

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

LOL.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

In your estimation, who is the bigger draw at this point: Junior or Canelo?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

I think they can both be big but it will depend on if they are fighting an A opponent. Canelo fought an opponent who nobody thought had a chance and drew well but Chavez fought an A-level opponent and it was a legit sellout with a gate that did $2 million or so more. So it depends on the opponent.

Lenny (Milwaukee)

Dan do you have a lot of chest hair?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

These are my readers.

James (Part's Unknown)

True or False:The FDA has approved the prescription of Rigondeaux fights as a cure for insomnia?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Ouch.

Adam (DuPage)

Any word on American TV for the Hatton fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Not yet. Obviously, it would be an ideal fight for Epix.

Dieter (From Sprockets)

Now is the time in the chat when we DANCE!

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

But of course.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (Culiacan)

I sure hated giving up that green belt to Sergio. I was going to smoke it!

J (Denver)

If you had your choice between a Chavez/Martinez rematch or a Chavez/Froch or Chavez/Pavlik fight, which would you choose? I'd love to see Chavez/Froch, two somewhat slow but super tough guys with chins...it would be a war.

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Rematch with Martinez.

Mark (Chicago, IL)

Do you think Leo Santa Cruz is ready for a step up to someone like Abner Mares?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Yes.

Adrian (Chicago)

Is Berto/K9 signed?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

No.

Keith H (Seattle)

In the spirit of the BBQ Chat, I think we now have the "Chavez Weed Chat."

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

You said you've been to casa de Tyson. Have you ever had a fighter over to the Rafael house?

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

No.

JCC Jr. (Wild Card Gym)

Sorry Freddy, gotta go. The McRib is back.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

LOL.

Koolkc107 (DeLand, Fl)

Any insights on the legal nightmare that is James Kirkland? I showed a co-worker who isn't even a boxing fan the Angulo fight and now he asks me at least twice a week when is James fighting again.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

No idea. James is in a lawsuit with Golden Boy and his managers. He has shown that he makes poor decisions and this another one.

Stiffy (Wisconsin)

I am dying of laughter over the chest hair question...

Mike (DC)

Is Arreola facing Stiverne on 11/10? Somebody is getting drilled!

Dan Rafael
  (1:42 PM)

It's being discussed.

Gale Van Hoy (Houston)

Chavez's urine looked clean to me.

Slater (West by God Virginia)

Ive heard that NBC was thinking about doing a couple fight night cards instead of just airing them all on nbc sports network. Any truth to that and if so would it be with relatively big name fighters.

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

There are couple of cards scheduled for NBC.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

what was the experience like seeing Pablo Sarmiento after the fight without sun glasses on?

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

OK, Fight Freaks, thanks for chatting. Gotta cut it a little short today as I have something I have to do. Hope you check out all of our new stories and blogs on the site and enjoy the fights this weekend. Talk to you next week. Peace.
