What's going on guys? It's been awhile since we've had a chat right before a UFC, but our dry run is over. What's on your minds on UFC 152 Eve? You loving Vitor's chances? Sure you are (what's not to love?). If you have a rant, do me a favor and start it with "Hey, Bro..." In honor of Vitor. Let's get this thing rolling.
Space Shuttle Enterprise....
What was the deal with Johnson and Benavidez and the Coldplay date?
Yeah, that got a little weird yesterday. The whole sharing the milkshake thing began to take the friendly pre-fight relationship in a different direction. Glad they are close.
Sonnen (loss), jason miller, jorge rivera, akiyama, dan miller, wandy (loss), denis kang, hendo (loss), leban. What in that list of names makes people think that Bisping is so good, or that he deserves a title shot if he beats stann? It drives me crazy when fighters get praised like they are really good (gilbert melendez) but have fought not top ten fighters. Are you with me?
Somewhat. Bisping's resume isn't as good as some of the other guys hovering in that contender space. He's won four of five, with a close loss to Sonnen. He's a name, which goes a long way. But I agree on whole...Weidman beating the No. 1 contender Munoz without so much as absorbing a single significant blow is big. Boetsch beating Okami, Lombard and then Weidman would be bigger.
What is more impressive? Jon Jones MMA career or the fact he has 2 brothers in the NFL? Both are staggering, both are noteworthy.
It's all pretty impressive, honestly. Jon gets the most recognition because he's the champ, he's in a sport where the face isn't concealed, and his isn't a team sport. Will say that Chandler looks like he could be the real deal, though.
So Vitor's son's favorite fighter is Jon Jones. How disappointed will he be if his old man clobbers him?
Yeah, that's a tough one. Vitor's son will just have to find a way to get over the sting of bitter disappointment if his dad comes through and beats Jones. He'll probably go through the typical stages of the Oedipal cycle, but maybe one day he'll appreciate the feat.
Do you think this will be Bisping's last chance to become the #1 contender for a title shot?
If he loses, it could be. Or at least at Anderson Silva. Silva's not going to be around forever, while the belt will be. Bisping will then have lost two in a row and it'll be a hard paddle back to contention. He needs this win.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE TIME OF THE MEETING WITH DANA WHITE AND JON JONES SINCE ITS RIGHT BEFORE WEIGH INS? HOW DO YOU SEE THAT MEETING GOING?
Questionable for sure. Will be worse if Dana's eating a cheeseburger during the meeting. I am not sure why the timing of the meeting, but things seem a little unsettled between White and Jones. If Jones plows through Vitor, and it's a good night of fights, this thing will begin to blow away.
How vehement do you expect the boos toward Jones to be during the weigh-in and pre-fight entrance?
Had a discussion about this yesterday at MMA Live. I think he'll hear the full chorus of boos tomorrow. But it's a little strange, too. If UFC 151 had gone down as expected, Jones wouldn't be on the Toronto card. He'll heard some cheers, too, especially if he lands a spinning elbow KO.
You gave Vitor an 8.5 percent chance of beating Jones? Why so high??
Very perceptive, Stephen. I don't know...I am feeling...what? Optimistic? I don't really like Vitor's chances, but when you have heavy hands there's still an active chance that something crazy happens.
Hey Chuck, great fights this weekened, why isnt swanson/oliveira getting much love or hype I think it has fight of the night potential.
Agree with you, Joey...that fight stands out to me. Oliveira is still very young and dynamic. Swanson always brings it. I think it'll be a great fight, and I favor Oliveira.
Any word on what will happen with Comier?
Still nothing official that I've heard. Did a blog about it that will run tomorrow. The only glaring top ten name that makes any sense is Fabricio Werdum.
HEY BRO AS AN OPPONENT HOW DIFFERENT WOULD SONNEN REALLY HAVE BEEN FROM HENDERSON?
The 'Hey, Bro' era is underway. Thanks, Nickel Steak. Pretty different. Sonnen doesn't have the punching power of Hendo, and his wrestling is transparent doggedness. Sonnen's also a southpaw.
The first flyweight champion will be _________. And ___________ will defend his title against ___________.
It's going to be Joseph Benavidez, though the more I think about the fight the more I foresee it being close. As for who's next after Mighty Mouse, maybe Chris Cariaso.
Who wins machida vs heno and why and how??
Haven't really thought of it, but the way Henderson likes to come forward and mix it up might play into Machida's hands. He's a flytrap, Machida.
Hey Chuck, with all of our fun tattoo discussion, I was curious to find out your winner of worst fighter nickname. Having trouble deciding between Rick The Horror Story and Nick the Promise Ring myself.
Rick "The Horror" Story is not that bad. Not as bad as Jesse "Water" Bongfeldt. The "Promise" Ring is pretty bad, though.
Cripes, Jonny Jones just makes it so hard to like him. D you see any reason behind the comments he made about Anderson Silva? "I'm not Anderson Silva, I can defend a doible leg" or something of the like. Classy. But I do have a consiparcy theory. Dana told him that his next fight would be against Silva if he gets by Vitor as "punishment" for the cancelled card.Anderson has a 205 warm-up fight in 3 weeks too...thoughts?
That sounds ideal to me, but I don't think that's the case. I really thing that Silva (once he beats Bonnar) will get GSP (if he gets by Condit). I think that Silva wants less of Jon Jones than Jones wants of Silva. Bottom line: I think Jones thinks he could beat Silva, and that sort of makes him sad.
So, the UFC is officially employing the specious argument that they are not allowed to disclose which of their fighters have requested or received TRT exemptions. Tell me again why anyone discusses the inner workings of MMA as being anything less than a tribute to Juvenalian satire?
That does seem...rather strange, doesn't it? But between commissions and states and the different (often inexplicable) policies of each, nothing surprises me.
Any news about what's next for Rampage?
Not yet. I would still like to see him fight Shogun as a farewell, but he'd be waiting a long while.
Why does it seem as if nobody is giving Vitor a shot whatsoever ?? He prepares his mental game just as much as his physical game. I hear everyone screaming bout age, reach, and height disadvantages yet nobody seems to be talking about how none of that seems to be affecting "The Phenom" at all. Lyoto put hands on jones and he didn't like it, what's he gonna do when Vitor comes at him with that " controlled rage" and he gets hit multiple times?? I smell "upset". Just sayin
As with everything, we judge off the momentums coming in. Jones has walked through everybody, and they were a gang of ex-champions. Vitor has beaten some decent names, but not like Jones. Vitor's out of his weight class. Vitor's older. Vitor gives up eleven inches in reach. BUT, he does have power. It can cancel out logic, and derail momentum.
Just for S&Gs, let's say Condit wins by decision in a fight of the year contender. What's next for GSP - Silva at catch or Condit again? Does he have carte blanche from Zuffa at this point?
It's hard to say. I would think that the loss would sit with GSP so poorly that he'd want the immediate rematch with Condit. The Silva fight might come off the table in that scenario, too, because GSP will be coming off a loss. If he didn't get Condit immediately, I think he'd ask for Nick Diaz next.
With the NHL lockout in place, do you know of locked out players that have the striking ability and skills to try out for MMA promotions?
No, but I've heard that some NHLers train in MMA. Obviously Donald Brashear transitioned into MMA, but there are current players (some goons, some not) that train in MMA. The University of Denver hockey team used to train MMA, with their strength and conditioning coach Mike Sanders.
Should there be restrictions on MMA training similar to how you cant have full contact football practices all week? Would this help with the injuries and should UFC spearhead the effort?
Been hearing versions of this thought all year with the uptick in injuries. I think that, in a fight situation, you're going to train how you (and the coaches) think best. As one of the ESPN Mag editors was saying to me, there might come a point in maybe ten years when MMA practitioners look back at right now and say "man, they were going about things all wrong."
How do you think Matt "The Hammer" Hammil is going to do in his zeturn fight to the UFC?
Tough to say, but I truly believe him that he was burnt out for his last couple of fights. The time away will inevitably help him, but he is getting older. Wouldn't be surprised if he has a good showing tomorrow night.
Hey, Chuck! Now that JC Chavez jr has tested positive for marijuana, doesnt that put pressure on the NSAC to come down just as hard as they did towards Nick Diaz? What type of backlash would you expect if they didn't?
I think that Chavez will get a similar situation to Diaz; a year suspension, etc.
What happened to your Broncos, Chuck? Doesn't get any easier this week with the Texans. Good luck (you'll need it).
I see how it is. One bad game and the bandwagon tips over. Tough game with the Texans, but think the Broncos will rebound strong. And that Manning's arm strength will resurface, proving we're a nation of alarmists.
Who are guys you think will be stars one day that are on the UFC 152 card?
There are a couple of great looking prospect types on the card. Start with Jimy Hettes, who has been phenomenal in his couple of UFC fights. Not sure how far you can gauge him with the one-sided Nam Phan fight, but doing it to Brimage would say something. Charles Oliveira is another guy who has a lot of potential.
how many more do you see bones competing at LH... dont think bones waiting for the swede to become more seasoned?
Jones insists there are plenty of guys at 205 left for him to destroy. There's Dan Henderson. There's Alex Gustafsson. If Glover Teixeira plows through Maldonaldo, maybe his name starts getting bandied about. So there's a small pack of names still out there, but they diminish in value as you go on. I think he'll be heavyweight bound by late 2013.
Odds that Rumble ever gets back into UFC as a 205 pounder?
I'd say pretty good. Was in Florida last week, and he's bigger than guys like Belfort by a mile. Hard to believe he ever fought at 170. Doubt we'll ever see him below 205 again, and if that's the case, the UFC wouldn't have to worry about him showing up heavy.
Chuck, what do you make of Bisping's chances tomorrow night? I just arrived, so I apologize if this has already been discussed.
He's got a great chance in this fight. His boxing is probably superior to Stann's, and he's good in the clinch, good head movement and footwork. He doesn't have the power of Stann, but he has the versatility.
You know the whereabouts of Kimbo Slice? (I hear there's a SF heavyweight fight that needs to be saved...jokes!)
Isn't he still fighting in rigged boxing matches?
Any word on what mayhem miller is upto? hopefully no more church mayhem
Tweeting strange things to Ronda Rousey. Did you see that Tweet? Check his (or her) timeline.
Miguel Torres the fighter once told me in a diner while we talked in California that 75% of MMA fighers are on PEDs and he said he wouldn't back down from that number. What is your take, Chuck? Maybe not him saying it but more on what he actually said?
I've heard similar figures from other fighters. I remember Soszynski making that claim on Ariel Helwani's show back a couple of years ago. Truth is, a lot of guys probably are cycling and are smart enough to not get caught. It's definitely a problem in the sport.
Yo McFly, what's the best fight you was ever ringside for?
Been a few. I'd go with UFC on Versus, when Cheick Kongo knocked out Pat Barry. Or same thing when Duffee got knocked out by Russow. Both times were out of nowhere. Been at some classic fights, too...Nog/Couture was a good one. Too many to come up with without going though my credential necklaces.
Chuck, your boy Josh Gross held down the chat on Wednesday! Was wondering if you guys keep up with Jon Anik at all?
Yeah, I still hear from Anik from time to time, and saw him in Denver for UFC 150. Dude's loving life in the warm climate (Vegas), and loving his proximity to the sportsbook. He's a class act.
If Jones walks through Vitor as everyone assumes he will, who will he fight next (especially if they are booking Henderson against Machida)?
Good question. He said he wants to fight again in 2012, which would mean either Machida, or somebody we're not yet contemplating. Maybe that's why they haven't announced Cormier's next opponent yet. Maybe they are waiting to see where Jones is? (Probably not, but who knows).
Who do you think Jesus will help win this weekend... Jones or Belfort?
Of course, He will not pick sides. (Probably Jones).
Incredible thing: The two most accomplished and compelling fighters in the UFC (Silva & Jones) are scheduled for fights that register as little more than matchmaking punchlines. Even more incredible thing: Dana White will call you an idiot for pointing out this obvious reality. Do you like tacos?
These are incredible things. I do like tacos; as a matter of fact, had some good ones when in Atlantic City at a stationary food truck in the Revel hotel. Gourmet stuff.
Hey Bro, have any locks for UFC 152?
Hettes. Kid's just getting started.
If Benavidez-Johnson is an instant classic, do you see an immediate rematch in store or will they give another contender the first crack at the winner?
You'd think they'd want to get traffic moving in the flyweight division, rather than have rematches. Particularly after the McCall/Johnson ordeal. BUT, if it were a controversial fight (which they tend to be), the dearthiness of the new division might make for an exception. Not a lot of big names knocking on the door.
Hey Broseph, Do you think Jon Jones really could be flash KOed by a single punch?
Sure, even with the shrubbery he's growing on that chin.
Someday we will look back and realize how badly we overrated Brian Stann just because he fought for our country. Tim Kennedy, too. Guys would be Tamdon McCrary if they weren't veterans.
I don't know; the Barn Cat's resume wasn't nearly as good as Stann's. This fight will go a long way in determining where Stann sits in the division. We know he struggles with wrestlers, which Bisping isn't. This should be the type of tough fight he can win.
Ryan Jimmo's 7 sec KO was crazy! Any word on his next fight?
I haven't heard, but coming off a performance like that, it'll be hard to outdo himself. People forget about that performance in light of the rest of the UFC 149 card.
What do you think the fight of the night tomorrow is? my $$ would be on the flyweight championship
Not a bad bet. Those guys will bring it. That's a lot of pent-up, frenetic energy being unleashed. The Swanson/Oliveira fight might give it a run for the money, though.
Chuck, great job on MMA Live. Liked what you said about Jon Jones and LeBron James. Ultimately, though, isn't it a step forward that there's a star big enough in MMA to compare himself to an NBA brand like that without people scoffing?
That's actually a good point. Jon Jones is already a big enough star in this sport (and taken seriously enough) that he can liken himself circumstantially to LeBron James and not hear it for MMA being a "weaker sport." In years past MMA stars haven't been comparable to NFL or NBA stars. That's a silver lining in the heel turn, huh? Small victories.
Brian Stann: Future President of the USA?
Probably not. He's too honest.
When Jon Jones eventually gets bored at LW like Silva did at MW, do you think his first HW fight will be against a gatekeeper like Kongo or for the HW belt?
Good question. People keep bringing up Jones/Kongo; guess they see it is a gauge for how he'll hold up against hard hitting, outsized heavyweights. My guess is he'd get somebody a little further up the rungs.
Dark horse for Submission of the night... Brian Stann
I like what we're saying right now, Austin. Outside the box. Like it.
Will there ever be a UFC card in Africa?
Talking about doing a card in South Africa in 2013. My guess is the thing gets done.
Hello Sir! MMA(UFC) is now as popular as Boxing in our country. When does the UFC plan to take the fight here? Any news?? Thnx!
They've flirted with the idea for the last couple of years, but I think it'll happen soon. Where there are fans, the UFC is monitoring. So long as nobody is forced to eat balut.
do you think pacman and mayweather will finally get it on in 2013?
Wish I could say yes. I hope so. Would like to see it while it's still possible (relevant).
HEY BRO DID YOU JUST SAY "DEARTHINESS"? WHAT'S UP WITH ERICK SILVA?
Silva is fighting Jon Fitch at UFC 153 in Brazil. That will be a true test for him. Fitch, coming off the loss, hasn't clubbed an upstart for a long time. Here's his chance. Silva will need some endurance.
Any word on what's next for Daniel Cormier now that the Mir fight is off?
Werdum makes the most sense to me. If they can cross Mir over, why not a guy who was over in Strikeforce to begin with? Both guys seem willing. Both are top ten.
You think there's too many tattoos in our sport? I do.
There are a lot of tattoos. To the point that guys stand out as extraordinary who don't have body ink.
Chuck, were you in Bristol for Jon Jones' "carwash?""
I wasn't there for it, but it was a pretty big week in Bristol for combat sports. Jones was in, then Pacquiao was in on Thursday.
Well, I don't think anyone was forced to eat vegamite when the UFC went to Australia, so things may be looking good for the Philippines.
Jonathan, you are a voice of reason.
have you tried balut before?
No. But Philip Nover once swore to me it was great. Particularly late night, after drinking all Bourdain style, from a street cart. Just seems like a bad idea (when sober).
I am women's mMA artist of the kind. When UFC going to respect us with one fight. We not want divsiions per sayeth, just one fight Mendnhall. Thank you. Yiou think Rousey and Cris is UFC banner?
I think if Rousey and Cyborg fight, the UFC will unveil it. Dana's an overflowing Rousey fan.
Chuck we met at that taco truck in Revel after that HORRENDOUS weird performance by your boy Guida. Those tacos are very good. Who's next for Clay? Not that anyone cares
I'm not sure what's next for Clay. I wouldn't be surprised if they stuck him against Eddie Alvarez when he makes his way over. Or Guillard.
I am really excited to see the fly weights go at it for the title. Joe should ko mighty mouse and hold the strap for awhile. Does McCall get a crack at the title with a win or will the ufc go else where because of his legal issues
They might look at McCall, but I think he'll have to fight and beat somebody first. He was supposed to fight Moraga, but that didn't happen. My guess is a guy like Chris Cariaso steps up as a contender first.
Really liked your Michael McDonald piece. Do you agree with his distinction between being a fighter and a martial artist?
Thanks, Dale. He's a very thoughtful kid, and I think he has a great chance of becoming the UFC's youngest champion. I understand what he means by "fighting" versus "martial arts." He does martial arts for the love of it. Fighting is the outlet for it. But fighting, as a whole, as a business, is not his love. He doesn't necessarily like the rigmarole of the "fight game."
Alright guys, got to close this down. Enjoy the fights this week, and let's do it again next Friday. Thanks for taking the time to stop in.
