Sorry for the delay. Jesse's internet connection has been locked out... kidding, of course. He'll be here momentarily.
Sorry for the delay..some technical issues...
Ok, ready to go...
Thanks for joining me in our what should be weekly chat..but this will be it until the lockout ends or there is actually something to chat about...sorry for all you fans...hopefully this gets done sooner rather than later...fire away with questions
I already miss my hawks. Any way to get my fix besides watching countless youtube videos?
Well, there will be plenty playing for Rockford..Hayes, Shaw, Saad, Kruger, Leddy among others so thats not too bad...get out to rockford to some games is all I can say...
On the bright side of this lockout, there may be some extra time for Hossa and Carcillo to heal. Any word on how Carbomb is doing?
Read my blog posted last night...car bomb is ready...kind of quiet on the Hossa front..he gets paid until cleared so maybe he's laying low but his camp isnt talking much...at the convention he said he was on pace to be at camp healthy..I suspect he doesnt sign overseas and he just gets his injury pay..
As a die hard Hawks fan who bases many of his fall/winter/spring evenings around whether or not the Hawks are playing, this situation makes me sick. The players and owners are both at fault here but it is a flat out insult to the fans that the reps are not in a room on a daily basis negotiating until a deal is done.
Of course you are right..but there is no negotiating to be done until one side gives-in on the main economic issue...but again, youre right, you would think one side would say "ok, you can have your money but we want this instead"...but sounds like nothing happnes until one side gives in..everything else is small potatoes so its not worth any "other" part of the negotiation...if that makes sense.
Im very upset with this nhl strike! Its just not fair to the fans. They dont deserve my hard earn dollars anymore especially when there is too much greed in professional sports! Smart people should stand together and say see ya hockey!
Listen, its too bad you really cant get organized for something like..its the ultimate irony..the people that pay the players and owners dont have a voice...in this day of social media..you guys should organize and dont go to games when they retrn but it has to happen on a massive scale..including canada..but it wont..the UC will be filled...
What are the chances we might see Toews and Kane play together when they both sign to play in Europe during the Lockout?
Again, mentioned in a blog post yesterday..Kane and Toews share the same agent so decent chance they sign together..kane said he'd like that and when you go overseas it doesnt hurt to know some guys already so i can see that happening unless the economics of it doesnt work
Can you explain as I really don't understand how they ( BOTH SIDES ) can tell the fans that they care so much about us, that we are so important, yet, they let the deadline come & go with no meetings for a couple of days prior to it
Again, they are stuck in their positions so now its a waiting game..who blinks first sort of thing..
With a bunch of players signing with other teams overseas, does that mean there's a possibility of the lockout ending this entire season?
Doesnt have to mean the season but def sounds like a few months at least...I think we are looking at dec or else the whole season..
If we lose a full season to the lockout, what's the effect on players' contracts? Does that mean we lose a year of Kane and Toews?
Yes, a year comes off...stalberg is a UFA, etc.
Jesse, who do you see as being the more unreasonable side here? I think most fans see it as the owners instead of the players. Is there something we're missing?Also,...ugh. Nevermind. I just want to see the Hawks play. After last year I can't wait to see them come out inspired.
No Ive asked that question...players, agents, etc. are really confused by Bettman's stance..there isnt much of a negotiation going on...hes told them this is what he wants and this is how he wants to get it..and thats it..even if he's right in the end he's not letting the process play out..in other words he;s not giving them a chance to say "well lets try this or that". thats whats confusing to them...its take it or leave it nearly from the start...but people should know...only the players side is talking publicly so everything is through their glasses but it does seem like there is a stubborness from the get-go and people cant figure it out...
What day would you target as the last day for a possible season?
Sometime in early Feb...the last time they didnt cancel until close to march I want to say so i think feb.-ish
But it could get canned before that if they feel like there is no progress, etc. last time doesnt have to repeat in terms of a timeline..just guides us now
Do you think owners are getting nervous about All star players playing in Europe? Maybe putting some pressure on them?
Doesnt seem to be..happened last time too...not sure why they would get nervous...have to get insurance, etc. and they know those players will be back..they arent making the money they make here
what do you think the precentage is we have hockey this season?
Ill take the easy way out and say 50/50...thats as low I have thought this whole summer...remember it can look really dark before it gets bright really quick..so Ill stick with that..
Do you think lockout will last long enough that Toews, Kane and others will have to go oversees to play?
Yes, it def seems that way..enough have already gone
Who is odd man out on defense after the recent signing of Roz? Is it Montador because he isn't healthy?
Not necessarily because of health but I think it might be him anyway...odds are it would be in my opinion
Trying to look at the positive, which Hawk will benefit the most from a lockout: Keith, who could probably use a rest with all the minutes he plays, Car-bomb recovering from knee surgery, Kruger who can spend some time in the AHL, or someone else?
Not carcillo according to him. hes ready now..he got hurt in Jan so its been 9 months and he looks fine on ice..prob not hossa either..hes either better after contact or hes not..maybe keith but remember a shortneded season will be a condensed one...4 in 5 nights, etc. so not sure it helps there either...the AHL angle might be the best one...Saad, Kruger..heck Leddy could all use it...
Now that the blue line looks jam packed, how do you see the top 3 pairings playing out?
keith/seabrook, oduya/hammer, leddy/roz....brookbank rotates in along with olsen if hes with NHL...montador unsure at this point...something like that...
Enjoy your work so no offense with my question. Your thoughts on whether or not Hawks PR machine used the media to make it appear they were targeting some of the bigger free agents this off season when in reality they made halfhearted effort only to appease the fans? I find the Hawks management disingenuous & only concerned with profit.
Its a legit question I suppose...I dont think so from what I hear...I mean Broduer (and parise) were caling around to guys like John Madden asking more about the hawks so I dont think so..I simply think with the extra cap room and the "chi" name they went fishing and came up short for obvious reasons...i mean are the fans in pitt and det saying the same thing? I might be naive but I think I (we) would have seen through that if that was the case
Aren't the owners extremely foolish to lockout the players? They are finally getting out from the damage the last work stoppage did. Unlike Football I think they need to make concessions and start this season on time. They are out of their minds if they let this season go.
Thats what you would think but if they get their way wont they recoup that money in the savings they get with the players? and remember that savings will last 6-10 years so they'll get it "back" if you know what I mean...they arent looking at short term as much as long...they get once chance about every decade to change the system so here they are trying again
What kind of effect do you think the lockout will have on league attendance?
I'm less inclined to utter the phrase "the fans wont be back" especially in this sport...you dont think the UC will be filled? I do. 100 percent I do..now, as for other arenas, I dont know..the ones that normally struggle will prob struggle more but canada will be fine so I think its minimal, I really do..bettman is right, as sad as it is...the fans will respond because they miss hockey..and the longer without it, yes, some will leave but others will be starving for it..
Is it surprising to hear Toews being so openly critical against Bettman? Isn't he just the messenger for the owners, including Wirtz?
..first off, its bettman in the room not the owners so you never know what they feel compared to what he is saying..but HE is the one being stubborn in their eyes...but its not a bad point..next time I interview him Ill ask if hes upset with owners (wirtz) since bettman is doing their bidding..i bet we get a very subdued response but its worth asking
Will you be covering the team in Rockford during the lockout? That's pretty much half of our team working together right there. Do see the number of players that will be playing together at Rockford as a positive when those guys join the veterans in Chicago? Do other teams have as many teammates headed to the AHL?
Yes all teams have players headed to the AHL..I might go to opening night against the Wolves or opening of camp but I wont be covering the icehogs on a daily basis...
Jesse, what does this mean for you? What will you be doing during the lockout?
Prob head to Halas Hall for some bears coverage, a little Bulls when they start up..be on the radio more, etc. Last yr when bulls were down our bulls guy helped me out so prob a little of that, etc.
If you had to choose, which side would you take in NHL vs NHLPA argument?
Its simply too easy to take AGAINST the NHL more than be on the NHLPA's side..im going to write this in a blog...Bettman has not come out and said WHY drastic changes have to happen..last time you could make the case a cap was needed for compeittive balance..so nash could compete for free agents with NY...like Green bay can in football but this time they havent said anything other than "we dont want to pay the players so much". i think its obvious...the NFL and NBA cut back the share for players and the owners saw that and said "we want that" but other than greed they havent indicated why its so "good" for the league
If they gave a compelling reason I might take thier side..
Jesse,I agree with you. The strike is not going to hurt any of the larger market teams. But what happens to teams like Columbus, Florida, etc that already have a weak fan base?
I just dont know...I mean I dont get the common thinking..businesses have problems...when they resolve them you deal with it...my point being if youre a fan now, then they resolve, why wont you be a fan again...Now, if youre mad at them for canceling a season then do what I say organize something..but to give up being a fan of a great sport I think is silly...you lose..they will make thier money and keep playing...UNLESS YOU BOYCOTT IN A MASSIVE WAY..im all for that
Jesse,I read an article that the real winner in all this will be the Chi Wolves, who may capitalize on hockey junkies who can't watch the hawks. Any chance this strike gives the hawks younger players a chance to impress in the minors?
I think for sure the Wolves attendance increases as it did last time..course the Hawks stunk anyway back then..so yeah all AHL teams win some..i wish the canucks had sent Luongo through waivers..who would have claimed him? maybe someone...then he'd be on the wolves for AHL season...guess not
I'm verys surprised not to hear about Crawford going to Europe. Would he not want to be first on the plane...to work on getting his game back? He is pivotal piece. Have you heard anything on him?
I have not..Ive inquired but have not heard back..its still early in terms of the lockout..he'll find work if he wants it..Im sure we'll hear soon about his plans
forget practicality for a second (salary, availability, etc.). What second line center on another team would be the best fit in that slot for the Hawks?
Its an impractical question cause my answer would be Malkin or Kesler or someone..you have to have some parameters...
do you think it's wise of our elite to play over seas or continue conditioning in north America. also, is jonathon toews the best current captain in all of hockey?
I cant answer if hes the best..hes very good...and yes its wise..as many playing as possible can only help when they get back as long as there isnt major injury...not to say they wouldnt be good anyway but lets assume no injury then its good to be playing
Would it make more sense from a solidarity standpoint if the players didn't go to Europe to play? Or by them going does that give the NHLPA a little leverage as if to say 'you need us more than we need you'?
I would vote for the latter...they all stay home with no paychecks and nothing to do they are more likely to cave..get them some money, make the best of it and let the owners sit at home with no gate and having to lay off people...not pretty for them
Why are some players already signing oversees? It's day 5 of the lockout and only some preseason games have been cancelled. Shouldn't they wait a little bit longer, at least?
Obviously they've been told its not going to be a week but it doesnt matter, they can come back on a moments notice...
who has a Napoleon complex and likes the power to flex. Hate to be so doom and gloom...but i just don't see and give here. Jesse, any insight regarding Bettman from the players you speak to?
No, they are as confused as the rest of us...very confused but his tone, stance, etc.
If you could take any player from the Hawks history in their prime, and put them on the current team, who would it be?
Well instead of debating savard, hull, mikita, etc..in light of how many goals the hawks gave up last season Ill just say Tony Esposito
What's the coaching staff up to during the lockout? I would imagine they don't coach overseas only to disappear on their team the second the lockout ends.
Working the chalk board dring the day and the sauce at night? not much else
Hey Jesse! It seems like everyone wasn't too happy that the Hawks didn't make a big splash this off-season. I think the Hawks were being smart. They knew the salary cap was going to get cut significantly and we have an abundance of top prospects ready to contribute in the next few years. I know its hard to be patient but the reality is we couldnt of got an significant upgrade without trading one of our "core" guys; which seems to make everyone even more upset once it happens. It might take a year or two to pan out but do you think the Hawks are going in the right direction to win another championship and be competitive for another 6-10 years?
6-10 ? thats a long time...lets start with the nest yr or two..of course they will be competitive but is it enough..this yr will really tell the story on both Q and Bowman...Q will be diff for sure and with the same team we'll know if Bowman's moves were the right ones...
It sounds like the Icehogs are going to be an exciting team to watch this year. How do you see them faring and which prospects are you excited to follow?
One word: Saad
Thats it for today..hopefully we'll do this soon again but prob not on a weekly basis if the lockout drags on...keep checking the blog for player updates, etc. and follow me on twitter @espnchihawks...I feel for all the fans out there but find a new hobby for a while..then come back when they come back..luckily toews etc are not leaving their prime so hawks should be good no matter what happens..talk soon
