Hello there. Per the results of our weekly Twitter contest. Today's first question is about the Cowboys. Please, fire away.
Does Jason Garrett seem overwhelmed with the play calling duties as well as his head coach duties or does the offensive line limit what he can call play wise?
I think all coaches have their strengths and weaknesses, and in his short time as Cowboys head coach Garrett has offered evidence that he has a hard time getting the play called and in on time. I would say it seems better this year, and in terms of the effectiveness of said plays, yes, I think the offensive line is the biggest problem.
Dan, are we going to see a legitimate 1-2 combo at running back with the Giants again with Bradshaw and Brown?
I think it's possible it could return to the kind of sharing situation you saw in recent years with Bradshaw and Jacobs. But at this point, I think if Bradshaw doesn't show something, he's going to have a hard time convincing anyone it's the line's fault and not his.
Are the redskin's defensive backs really not talented enough to stop these big plays or can they at least be mitigated by a better defensive gameplan? Rob Jackson and Jenkins played just fine, I find it hard to swallow that all those deep passes can be blamed on a lack of pass rush.
I think it's a personnel issue in the secondary, not a scheme one. The scheme issues, I think, result from an effort to compensate for the personnel deficiencies in the secondary.
Who gave AJ Green and invisibility cloak??!
He's some kind of special player, isn't he?
Given how much RG3 was pummeled doing it, how often will we see Brandon Banks lining up in the backfield? It was effective.
Yeah, I would expect them to use that more.
Dan, what is your take on DaRell Scott getting the carries during garbage time on Thursday rather than David Wilson? Seems like it would've been a perfect opportunity to give the rookie a little experience, no?
I think the Giants have specific plays for Wilson right now and aren't going to use him outside of those.
Not saying he would have made the difference but from watching the game it looked obvious the Eagles miss Maclin. Could he be the Eagles most important weapon on offense (given andy's play calling against running the ball)?
I think this is a useful point. And yes, it's possible that Arizona is a very good team and would have beaten the Eagles even had they been at full strength. But the offense does suffer without Maclin, and there's more than one game's worth of evidence to support this. My issue is that they knew Maclin was out, they knew they had two backup O-linemen and they don't appear to have adjusted their game plan accordingly. I think that's where the Eagles' coaches failed.
Nnamdi has taken a lot of heat here this week in Philly. I do not think he is very good at playing the ball in the air. I do not understand why he just pulled up on that deep ball to Larry Fitzgerald even if he did believe there was safety help. Can we call him overrated?
He has not performed up to his prior reputation since arriving in Philadelphia. Therefore, yes, I think you are justified in using that term if you like.
So Dan, maybe you didn't hear this small news story, but apparently there was a bad call last night...
It's not that the call was bad, though it was. It's that these guys are obviously guessing.
What do you think of my jayron hosely pick? i feel like if we can keep corey and prince healthy, we have a pretty solid top 3 corners to play nickel, which we have to do constantly these days bc the league hates running.
Love the way Hosley plays. Fast, aggressive, finds the ball and refuses to give up on it. Looks like they found a gem there.
Was you as surprised as i was when Ramses Barden went over to Eli and gave him that hug after the Carolina game and thanked him for trusting in him? You typically don't see that type of reaction from players...they are more "I deserve this" and less "I appreciate this".
Culmination of a very long, tough process for Barden. I'm sure he was very emotional. And no, not surprised. Giants players adore Eli.
DG, just asking a hypothetical question here b/c I can't find the answer: Could the NFL just basically fire the NFLRA and hire a new batch of officials this upcoming off-season? Just curious at what point the NFL says, "We aren't going to reach an agreement with these guys" and moves on. (Not saying that's what I or any reasonable fan would want...just curious about the answer)
They could. Baseball did it once.
According to Pro Football Focus, Asomugha is the 25th ranked CB so far this season. Obviously, given his contract and reputation, he should be playing better, but the hate he's getting is way over the top. Plus Coleman admitted that the Fitzgerald TD was his fault.
Nothing you say here is wrong. But it's also not wrong to say he's failed to play up to his reputation since arriving in Philadelphia. When the reality does not match the hype, you are, by definition, overrated.
Why do so many people rank offenses/defenses by yards gained rather than points? I can't recall any games where the team with the most yards (but fewer points) has won the game. When you look at points, Philadelphia is not in the top ten in either offense or defense. In fact, they are dead last (tied with Dallas) in the league on offense and tied for 13th in defense. Thoughts?Offense (Points)1 Redskins (99)3T Giants (94)31T Cowboys (47)31T Eagles (47)Defense (Points)7T Cowboys (54)11 Giants (65)13T Eagles (66)29 Redskins (101)
Because yards are often a better indicator of how the defense plays over the long term. If a team gives up a touchdown on an interception or kick return, those points go on their ledger. If an offense turns the ball over on its own 2-yard line and the other team punches it in, the defense just gave up seven points but only two yards. In that case, which is a better measure of the defense's level of fault?
Eli has shown a talent in developing players into receivers, but then they don't do as well once they leave (see Boss, Kevin; Smith, Steve) and he also seems to take guys that had trouble with pass catching elsewhere and make them look like pretty good receivers (see Bennett, Martellus). Is there something that Eli is doing that other QBs can't or won't?
He's just very good at working with his receivers. He has them all with him in a film session every Friday after practice where he's the only one who talks and they just listen and take notes. He makes it clear to them that he has no favorites and will throw the ball to anyone who can run their routes and get open reliably. He's approachable. He's a strong leader. I don't know if he's doing anything different than anyone else does, but he does these particular things very well.
Free Tanard Jackson!!!!
Don't hold your breath.
Is Jason Witten on the down side of his career, he doesnt look like the noraml Witten?
Having never had a serious spleen injury, I cannot speak to the amount of time necessary to return from one to full strength.
did will beaty impressed you as much as he did Peter King? Or are you sticking to your "only one game" mantra?
I think Beatty played very well. Maybe better than he played in any game he started last season. The Giants still see talent and potential. He has to show it consistently and also stay on the field. Two big remaining question marks for him.
Can you explain how you ranked the 1-2 Patriots ahead of the 2-1 Eagles given their almost identical strength of schedule?
Well, I think they're a better team, is how.
Hey Dan! I was at the Dallas game on Sunday and it seemed like every play(pass or run) the Dallas O-line was always falling to the ground... Is this something Callahan can fix or do we just hope for a better draft in personnel next year?
He's got to fix it. It's his job. If the line doesn't improve throughout the course of this season, it will crush the rest of the offense and prevent them from contending. It can improve, and they need to continue to work to make sure it does, or they're in big trouble.
Can we officially call the Cowboys-Giants game the fluke yet or do we have to wait another couple of weeks?
What's a fluke. It's the NFL. Cowboys played great, Giants played lousy, Cowboys won. Cowboys are capable of playing that well on any given week. Giants are capable of laying an egg. We've seen all of this before. Happens when every team is flawed.
Any news on Trent Williams injury?
They are calling it a bone bruise, listing him as day to day and his status for this week's game is uncertain.
Last year was the Year of the Quarterback - Is this year the Year of the Defense? (Although I can't imagine you agreeing with phrases like "year of the..")
You seem to know me well.
"...he has no favorites and will throw the ball to ANYONE who can run THEIR routes..." Come on, Dan. You're english be better den dat.
You're right. No editor on these chats.
Dan.. Vick's field awareness is AWFUL! How could he not know Kerry Rhodes was coming? He's Digressed tremendously since 2010!
Watching the tape, he never, ever moves his head on that play. Staring into the end zone at one spot the whole time until he gets blasted. It's a problem. Always has been. He used to overcome it by making sensational plays. That's the part that needs to come back.
Underrated loss for the Cowboys - Barry Church. Agree?
Absolutely. One of the reasons their defense looked better than expected was the surprise play of Church as a starting safety. He shall be missed.
Is Brandon Carr maybe one of the best free agent pick ups for the cowboys he has looked great so far
He has been excellent. I was eager to see how he'd do against Vincent Jackson this week and he did not disappoint. Guy's a big-time player who said he would step up to the challenge of moving into the bigger market and brighter spotlight, and he has. Fun player to watch.
Why haven't we seen more Roy Helu Jr. in the Redskins offense?
They think he's the third-best back they have right now. Also, his tendency to get hurt every time he plays annoys the coaching staff. They're funny that way.
QB controversy in Philly? Can you please explain why sports radio listeners and fans of the Eagles are wrong about wanting to bench Vick after one loss?
Because it's only one loss. Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady lost this week too. Should they be benched?
How did Hosley pick up on the Giants' defensive schemes so quickly and naturally? It's complicated, no?
I'm sure he's still learning, but a guy with his talent, speed, instincts, etc can make his own learning curve shorter and cover up some things by playing the way he has.
NFL just announced that Tate TD was the right call. Thoughts?
Again, not the issue. I disagree and think the call was wrong. But the problem is not a bad call. Real officials make those. The problem is that these guys are guessing.
Do you think the Skins regret not signing L. Landry to a 1-year, incentive-driven deal?
No. In fact, I am certain they do not.
is griffin missing garcon? only completing 9 passes to receivers?
I think it's clear that he is.
Is looking at OJ Atogwe just not worth the Cowboys time?
Guy can't stay healthy, is the problem.
I couldn't agree more.
Hi Dan, while it will be a brawl and a team effort game, which 1 vs. 1 matchup is a must watch in the Eagles vs Giants game this Sunday night: JPP vs. Bell (or Dunlap); Linval Joseph vs. Dallas Reynolds; Trent Cole vs. Will Beaty; or another matchup of your choosing?
Well, I think that first one you mention has potential to decide the game all by itself if the Eagles can't get some help over on that side.
Are the owners forgetting that hardballing players into a contract was easier because most of them have no other choice for income, the refs though (most) have pretty good payiing jobs outside the NFL and don't have to cave just because a house payment is due?
They're not "forgetting" anything. This is going exactly the way they expected and wanted it to go. The owners do not perceive that there is any problem at all.
Does Barden become the number 3 or does Hixon get his job back? He looked like such a huge target in the middle of the field!
I would think Barden has shown more than Hixon has, and deserves to play.
Any advice for Sunday's game against the Giants?
Run the ball, dude.
Dan, can you remind people that the comment section is not where you look for questions to be answered? :-)
Vick doesn't read blitzes well, the Cardinals have a vicious pass defense that harassed Brady all day last week, they have a makeshift offensive line, and were missing their best wide receiver. They have 4 RB's on the roster and potentially the best RB in the league. So, they throw the ball like there's no tomorrow. Why? Last year when McCoy had less then 20 touches they lost 7 of 8 games. Are Andy and Mike that stupid? Can they not do simple math?
I don't have much to add.
How was the crowd at Fed Ex this weekend?
Well, they had an up-and-down day. The first play kind of took some of the life out of them, and the Redskins were playing from behind all day. And after Cincy went up two TDs late, a lot of folks left, so they missed all of the craziness at the end. Seven straight home losses for Washington.
Is it fair to say that the Eagles are playing the weakest defense they have seen all year so far?
Wow. I mean, I guess you could make that case. I think Giants' D is better than the current version of Baltimore's, and I'd rate it ahead of Cleveland's, but I guess I see where you're coming from.
Dan are you mad at the Cowboys about something. You have been oddly negative towards them lately.
Is that right? I hadn't noticed, since I'm actually completely impartial and don't care who wins the games. But if you say so...
is the skins D in big trouble or is it fixable?
I don't see how it's fixable with the personnel they have. I mean, they were talking about getting Meriweather back, and fine, but he's not a coverage safety. They'll still be chasing receivers all year.
can you refresh us on your season prediction for the NFCE?
1. Giants, 2. Eagles, 3. Cowboys, 4. Redskins
Hey Dan -- Call me crazy, but I've got a feeling that now is the perfect time to try to trade for Vick on your FF team. You could probably get him on the cheap and he's about to turn it around. Agreed?
Yes, I am a big proponent of buying low. I can't trade for him since I have Matt Ryan and they have the same bye week. But yeah, in a vacuum, you should be able to get a good price. Just make sure you have a backup plan.
Dan, Do you think the Eagles are facing the toughest pass rush they have seen this season?
Well you made fun of the cowboys for losing to the seahawks with a snarky tweet and this morning you posted an article making it sound like jerry jones is the reason for the ref situation...
You're reading into things. Every fan has, at some point during the past year and a half, believed he or she has had some evidence that I hate his or her team or love its rival. It's all about your perspective. I assure you, I bear neither the Cowboys nor any other team any ill will. Just call em like I see em.
my questions are great, answer some!
Regular chat guy and havent had an answer from you in three weeks. Dont you think you guys shld try to answer the regulars. Or at least make it a point of emphasis. I know theres a lot of q's, but c'mon man!
I keep looking through this for the question. I'll keep looking.
Dan which was better Springsteen or the Skins game?
I mean, he played "Lost in the Flood." He played "Night." He played "Incident on 57th Street, and then went right into "Rosalita." He played two songs with Gary U.S. Bonds. That's not even a good question.
Do you envision any scenario in which Jim Haslett doesn't survive the season as the Skins DC?
I'd be surprised if they made a change there. Not impossible, but it would be surprising to me. I think he's part of Shanahan's plan.
More important to the team...Bryant or Murray?
Did you see that the state senate leader of NJ stated that he would try and pass legislation to stop replacement officials from games in his state? Saying that the unsafe work environment would not be tolerable in other industries. What do you think of government intervention into this mess? (regardless if it will ever be close to reality)
I would probably consider that silly.
If the Packers had a principal owner like the other teams, would there be more of a fallout from last night?s game?
Nope. That owner would also be on board with the replacement-officials plan.
Spaghetti and meatballs!! Which teams O-line is in worse shape: Dallas or Philly?
Is it me or doe it seem like Fred Davis has a diminished role in the offense this year?
It's not you. He caught more passes Sunday. But in the first two games, I thought that, in cases where Grossman would have dumped it to Davis, Griffin was running it.
What happened to Dez Bryant? Last season he went missing in the 4th quarter, this year he is missing from the 1st quarter on??? Too early for the bust label?
I think so, but this is a big year for him. I think he needs to perform or else that label's going to be justified. Personally, I thought he made a number of tough catches Sunday. The offense is struggling to move the ball behind that line. It infects everything.
you were answering the question about witten earlier but i actually think it could be (and i hate to say this as a cowboys fan) he is worried about getting hit again and its throwing his concentration off what say you?
Entirely possible. I'm not in his head.
Do you think the Skins can maintain their offensive production? I mean if they don't I can't realistically think they will be in many games with the D as it currently stands.
I think we've seen only part of what the Redskins believe they can do on offense, and if/when they get Garcon back, I think they can be even better.
Dano,Would you have benched Vick at any point so far this season?
No. Especially not for a third-round rookie. You have to believe in your people and support them. And the Eagles are 2-1, so a benching would be premature and likely detrimental.
Was Fred Davis' uptick in targets simply a result of Garcon being out or is RGIII becoming more comfortable using Davis as a legitimate offensive weapon?
I think it's the first thing, but the whole thing is evolving. Griffin has played three NFL games. He's still finding his way in the offense.
Dan- Assuming you are coming down to Philadelphia for Sunday Night's game, where are you getting your cheese steak from?
I like Tony Luke's on Oregon, but I'm open to suggestion and confident you guys have some.
how bad would vick have to play for you to bench him?
Again, I think the point is, you have to start losing games before that becomes a real question. They are 2-1. 2-1.
Benching Vick now is not an option, starting to decide if he is the starter next year is a process that should be in process correct?
Yeah, but their focus is more immediate than that. They like the guy they drafted, so it's not as though they don't have a potential avenue for 2013 already if they decide to move on. I think those discussions are for down the road.
skip the cheesesteak. get the beer tower at chickie and pete's
Well, you know, I'm going to be working, so...
Folks, I have to go. But I will miss you all and look forward to our time together next week. See you on Twitter.
