Welcome to my chat from the Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club. It's beautiful here as players from both teams prepare for the start of matches on Friday morning. It's already been two days of talking about what's going to happen come Friday. As Jason Dufner aptly put it, many of us are at this point more anxious than we are nervous. Let's get on with it!
I'm a huge NFL fan yet I will be glued to the Ryder Cup all weekend. I'm actually looking forward to this more than the majors. Is there a sense amongst the new players of how big this event has become?
Oh, absolutely. Several of the players that have played in past Ryder Cups say that it gets bigger every time it comes around. The rookies know this because the pressure to make this team heightens every two years.
So what do you figure the timetable will be for more women members at Augusta? Think the ladies will be able to field a foursome by year 3000?
Easily by 3000.
Ever play at Mosholu in the Bronx? They had some wild guys there back in the day.
Isn't it lame that Michael Jordan has become a visible presence on the Ryder Cup team, just because he and David Love were UNC buddies? Can't he just cheer from the sidelines like everyone else? Seems like an ego out of control. Your thoughts?
Michael,MJ has been a presence at the Ryder Cup since the 1990s. The players love having him there. He's not a distraction. If anything, he's a source of inspiration.
With no prize money, how much are caddies compensated for the Ryder Cup? Also, did Brandt's caddie make a $million+ last weekend?
That's up to Brandt and the deal that he has with his caddie. At the least, Sneds' caddie got $146,000 for the Tour Championship and a million for his percentage of the $10 million bonus. As for Ryder Cup compensation, I don't think there is any pay outside of ensuring that all of their travel and lodging is taken care of.
How come no scramble as one of the formats? That is the most popular corporate golf format that many of us are familiar with.
Nemes,That's funny, a scramble. It would be fun to watch these teams shoot 54 on this course. But it will never happen.
Are there rules against having a female Ryder Cup captain? I ask because I think Annika Sorenstam or Julie Inkster would make excellent captains.
Harrison,No offense, but the girls have the Solheim Cup. This is the Ryder Cup for the men.
What has more electricity in the air before the competition begins: Ryder Cup week or Masters week?
Patrick,The Masters is a genteel affair, mostly. Lots of rules and decorum. The Ryder Cup is a raucous affair. Imagine being at an outdoor Bruce Springsteen concert and everybody is singing "I was born in the U.S." but here they are chomping on cigars, drinking lite beer and screaming Go America after every good shot.
Which of these players on the US team is likely playing their last Ryder Cup? Furyk?
Good question. It's a toss up between Furyk and Stricker.
If I hear "Funky Cold Medinah" this week the TV's going out the window!
LOL. Love it.
At least 4 players have to sit a minimum of 2 of the first 4 matches, any guesses who they are for the US team?
Ed, yesterday in a story I said that Webb Simpson, Jason Dufner, Zach Johnson and Bubba Watson would sit on Friday morning.
What US rookie do you think will fare the best this weekend??
Seems this even would be better served in late February or March - avoid football. Due to weather is that not a possibility?
The Ryder Cup has to come at the end of the season. Remember you have those four majors. Also it's a big enough event to withstand football. It's not a perfect scenario but you can't make a schedule around football.
With practice rounds it seems tehy put like personalities together - wouldn't it make more sense, for at least one practice round, to put like players together - the bombers in a group, short straight in another - to see how different lies are played that they might encounter?
Ed,That's a good thought. But Love has said that he's trying to find out who wants to play together. Who feels comfortable with a different ball? I mean, some of these guys don't really like each other enough to try to work together on the course. So it's a big game of chemistry. Middle school chemistry.
Any water on the course that comes into play?
The best water hole on the course is the 17th. The downhill par 3 with water fronting a tiny green.
What will the greens be running at on the stimpmeter?
DL3 doesn't want them super fast. They won't be 10 but they won't be 15 either.
Heading out to Medinah Friday. Any recommendations on the best holes to watch?
How much golf do you want to see? I
With the dominance of Asian-born players, how long before the LPGA gets their version of the President's Cup?
Good question. They need to do it tomorrow. The Solheim Cup is kind of a joke at this point from the standpoint of each representing the best players in the world.
What pairing do you think DL3 will make that you disagree with the most? I don't think I would put Bradley and Mickelson together....
I like his potential pairings. Why wouldn't you put two guys together who feel comfortable with each other?
Would a guy like DL3, if he could only have one or the other, rather have a second major on his resume, or boast a victory as Ryder Cup captain?
Patrick,I'm sorry to tell you but if Love had to pick between the two, I think he would take the major over a win as the Ryder Cup captain.
Who's the front runner to be the next US Ryder Cup captain?
Do pros that don't make the RC team come to watch? You'll see other NBA players at the all star game.
Ed,No way. Guys who practically live out of a suit case and at golf courses don't want to be at an event as a spectator. Sure other guys from other sports show up, but tour players are watching this on TV.
Who likely has another Ryder Cup in them: AK, JB, Overton, Campbell, or Cink?
Furyk and Mickelson have played well together before, and their games compliment each other better, Ones a bomber, Furyk is a great iron player and both can putt. Phil and Keegan have never played together before... Just a thought...
That's true. But as a rookie, Keegan has to play with a veteran and he and Phil are very close.
What is the schedule on ESPN for Friday in regards to the Ryder Cup? Will it also be replayed later in the evening?
What pairing do you think DL3 is going to make that you most disagree with? I wouldn't put Bradley and Mickelson together....
I agree with his potential pairings.
In terms of world rankings, is this the strongest US team ever?
I have to say yes.
I was at the practice round yesterday and noticed that Dufner was, by far, the unfriendliest player out there. Did not interact with fans or other players. Is that just the way he is or is he not well liked by the other players?
Joe,Dufner is not a smiler or particularly emotive person. But he is a very nice guy. He never learned how to ingratiate the fans. But I have never seen him when he wasn't gracious to the fans.
Hi Farrell- I know that on Friday ESPN has the first day coverage but do you know what the times are and when it is on? Also will there be a replay later on in the evening by chance? Thanks!
8am. But I don't believe there is a replay. The coverage runs all day. Your replay would have to come overnight.
Will this ONCE again being a PUTT PUTT contest for the viewing public? All the viewers EVER get to see is the putts that either win or lose a hole... Only Tiger and Phil get shown on any other part of the hole. I hate watching the Ryder and Presidents cup because I want to watch the whole hole and not just a putt.
Larry,You make a good point. But look at it this way. Golf is a putting contest at this level. You don't get measured by how well you look from tee to green. The matches are determined by putts.
No love for Stewart Cink???
Cink is a good brother, but these teams are tough to make.
If one of our players lets say breaks his leg on the course or something of that nature, are any of the captains eligible to play (step in) or do they have to forfeit the match?
Yes, they forfeit the match.
By opening with Foursomes (Alternate Shot), isn't Love taking a big risk considering the Euros typically do better in this format?
I don't think so. I think you confront your fear head on.
Welcome to Chicago Farrell!!! Going on Sunday and am already pumped - first tee or first green better viewing and then walking once all 12 matches come thru?
I would see all 12 groups tee off. Then walk over to 10 and position yourself around 11 or 12. But maybe you take a risk and try to follow a big match. You won't see a lot of golf but following one group is the best way of getting into the spirit of the matches.
Hasn't Couples window to be Ryder Cup captain passed? Usually the captain is in late 40's and winding down in his career. With his President's Cup obligations, I would have thought his chance to be Ryder Cup captain passed?
Couples is so popular. Sponsors love him. All the players love his style. Mark O'Meara would make a good captain.
Do Phil and Tiger like each other? Everyone says they don't, but I do not see any evidence?
Phil and Tiger have a lot of respect for each other. I don't know that they will ever be close friends, but I think if something happened to one of them they would be there for each other.
Will ESPN be showing a PUTT PUTT contest? Again. If so, it will be BORING again.
Larry,At this level, golf is a putting contest. But I see your point. It would be nice to see more fairway shots and drivers and bunker shots. BUt the holes are won on the greens.
Do you think Dufner sits out more than one event? Is he and Zach Johnson a lock for Friday evening & Saturday Morning?
Kevin,Dufner has said that Zach would be a great partner. I think they would be a great pairing.
For some reason, maybe because SO many top players are in it, I have a feeling this is going to be a tremendous Ryder Cup. What would you say were the best RCs? I'd lean towards 91 at Kiawah followed closely by 99 at Brookline.
Nothing tops Brookline in'99. That was a daylong Hail Mary.
What team fares best with the course set up and why?
No one has an advantage. With no rough, they can all just stand on the tee and hit driver.
Funny Europe's best player 4 years ago (Harrington) had no chance of making the team. Why on earth did he win three majors and change his swing? Thoughts?
Nick,Paddy is a tinkerer. Pure and simple. He still called himself a "worker" after winning three majors. It never dawned on him that he had enough game to be a consistent top player.
Why did Dufner struggle in the playoffs and will the playoffs weigh on Love's decisions?
Kevin,I had written this week that I didn't think the playoffs would figure heavily into Love's decisions, but it's definitely in the back of his mind. Dufner didn't play well in the playoffs because honestly I think he was tired. He played a lot early and he got Masters this year. It's an emotional grind to be in contention every week.
Duffner might be a great RC player, but a lot of the best ones have been really emotional guys (see seve) not the non-emotive ones. Not sure why lack of emotion is seen as such a positive
Shoshanna,I don't think anyone is saying that lack of emotion is seen as an asset, but it does help to bring a certain equanimity to these matches.
I kind of like Tiger playing with Rory, whether its foursomes, fourball or singles. I think Rory makes him comfortable and relaxes him and it slows down his swing. He's won a majority of their same group rounds . Go USA
Good point, Barbara.
If the U.S. wins which format of play will be crucial?
Best ball. In session three at Celtic Manor, the Americans only earned half a point.
What is the Hottest PGA Tour Event in 2012 that is so hot that the Golfers almost Passed out?
Chris,This was a pure mild summer.
Do you think that Davis will sit Phil in the foursomes? His record is awful. I think he should. Too much of the time our Captains are afraid to hurt our guys feeleings. We are here to win.
I think Phil will sit himself if he doesn't feel like he can help the team. I don't think he's that selfish.
Any love lost between the players? Poulter seems like an easy guy not to like
Not really. Not all of these guys are buddies or need to be to play together and be collegial.
More pressure on a player in foursomes or fourball?
Foursomes by far. If you hit a hosel rocket it's pretty embarrassing to see your partner have to hit your shot out of the woods.
There are billion and 1 theories as to why Tiger has a mediocre RC record, but why is Phil's so bad?
As Tiger said yesterday, they have both been on a lot of losing teams and been in almost all the matches. So if you're losing the cups often, you're not going to have a very good record.
With Tiger and Rory's big face off coming in Asia, who wins and why?
TW beats Rory.
Too much praise being thrown around between these 2 teams - need a little drama here to kick up the intensity level. Nothing wrong with a little trash talk.
Ed,That's not Love or Olie's style.
Follow up to your comment on Brookline 99... I still can't get over those ugly shirts the US team wore the final day. Biggest fashion faux pas in RC history???
Easily. It's easy to forget about Justin Leonard's putt when all you can see is all those ugly shirts with picture frames running on the golf course. It was a classic moment in all-time worst team uniforms in any sport. They would have topped the Orgeon Ducks football team.
Is there any way Tiger and Rory DON'T play on Sunday against each other? Easy enough for the captains to make an agreement on the match everyone wants to see.
Love said today that would be against the spirit of the matches to engineer a Tiger-Rory match on Sunday.
MJ is a nice celebrity presence for the team, but if they need a motivator they should call on Ray Lewis. He turns every interview into a pre game speach!!!!
Who will be the standout performer at the Ryder?
Hey guys and girls I gotta go. It's been a good time. Please follow our coverage for the rest week. Take care and enjoy the matches, no matter which side you root for, enjoy yourself. That's the way Love and Ollie want it.
Is there a little extra pressure on Tiger since he wasn't part of the team that won on US soil last time?
He doesn't feel that pressure. There is nothing he can do.
