Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (1:59 PM)

Hey gang. OK, we won't have any blown end-zone calls, but here's a little controversy for ya. My blog on Kurt going from one 2nd-tier team to another, and he only has himself to blame:http://tinyurl.com/994pbvc

Jay (Ga)

How will Kurt busch fare in the 78 car next year, about top 15 to 17 driver? Could Regan Smith land in the 43?

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

Kurt could have some decent runs in 78, but he's going to another 2nd-tier team because he couldn't mind his manners this year. Smith might be a candidate for the 43.

Skip (Manhattan KS)

Does Bowyer have a realistic shot at winning the Chase? Two straight top tens but hasnt contended for the win. Which track do you think his best chances are?

Terry Blount
  (2:02 PM)

Clint always is good at Dega and should run well at Martinsville. He's still in the hunt, but I think the title will come down to JJ, BK or Denny.

Rick (Texas)

Because guys like Labonte, Burton, Regan Smith, Sadler, AJ, Mears, Vickers etc. are nice guys are they entitled to permanent rides in NASCAR or do they have to earn a ride by performance or bringing $ponsorship?

Terry Blount
  (2:04 PM)

It's both Rick. Some guys get rides based on their ability to give the sponsors a proper image, but that only goes so far if you can't race well.

Joanne (Ft. Myers)

In the last 8 races, #88 has only 1 top 5. Has Jr. lost all the early season consistency and is now a top 15 level team?

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

I don't think so, but they need to pick it up and win a race of two if he hopes to win the title. I know he wasn't happy with the car's performance at New Hampshire.

Kenny (Salem, NC)

Do you think Denny Hamlin is overconfident even though he won New Hampshire. He sounds like the same Denny who lost the 2010 title.

Terry Blount
  (2:06 PM)

Absolutely not. Denny is a much more mature guy now than he was in 2010. He called his shot because he wanted to pump up his team after a couple of careless mistakes. And it worked. But the difference is he's 100 percent behind his guys now.

Eric B. (TX)

Hi Terry, love your articles. Anyway, I was really confused the other day when you said the Chase was already down to 2 drivers but then you said that anybody could win it. Which viewpoint do you support and why?

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

I said you could make a statistical argument for it, which I showed, but also said I don't believe it. However, I think it's probably down to JJ, BK and Denny. Maybe Tony could get on a run and take it.

Jared (Connecticut)

What's next for Phoenix Racing after the season is over?

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

They'll continue with another driver who has less talent, but also is less of a pain in the rear.

Mark (NC)

Martin Truex Jr. sounded very frustrated on the radio Sunday. What's wrong with the 56?

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

Just one of those days where nothing they tried worked and Martin was upset.

Soccer fan (Vallejo, CA)

Why does Nascar hate turning right? I do it all the time when I'm driving to work.

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

Sprint Cup turns right twice a season.

Andrew (KY)

Now that Sprint Cup Champion Kurt Busch has signed on with Furniture Row Racing, is he a threat to win races and make the Chase in 2013?

Terry Blount
  (2:11 PM)

No, not in my opinion. He might win a race, but that team isn't championship quality no matter who the driver is.

Mark (Iowa)

Read on another site that Regan Smith may be a candidate for a JR motorsports car, any truth to that rumor?

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

It's all specualtion ast this point. I'm sure Regan wants another Cup ride if he can get it. I tell you who I'd like to see JRM hire for a a NW ride next year _ Johanna Long.

Justin (Northern Virginia)

Another one year deal for Kurt, is the plan for him to try to find a top tier ride for 2014?

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

Of course. That was the plan for 2013, but he didn't behave well enough to make it happen.

Saul (San Diego )

Worse blown call by NASCAR?

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

Hmmm? I'd have to think about that one, but Biffle not reachjing the finish line first under caution at KC and still getting the win was a wild one.

Jeff (Georgia)

Terry, how would rate Kahne's championship chances at this point? Thanks

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

I'd rate the as decent but not awesome. I would place JJ, BF and Denny ahead of him.

Lucas (Md)

Is Kurt's FR #78 with the RCR engines and engineering support just like the deal SHR has with HMS?

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

Sort of, but I don't think the relationship is that close because Furniture Row is based in Denver. And it's only a one-car team without anywhere near the quality personnel that SHR has.

greg (la)

what do drivers like logano make yearly

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

A good driver, but not title contender, like Logano typically makes $3 million to $5 million a year.

Jeff (Georgia)

Terry, what options does Brian Vickers have for next year? Thanks

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

Maybe the 43. Maybe more time in the 55 at MWR or a full-time third car there. He deserves a full-time Cup ride with a decent team.

Bill (NC)

Terry, what options does Scott Riggs have for next year? Thanks!

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

None in Cp unless it S&P. Maybe he can find a NW ride.

greg (florida)

i hate nascar

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

Then why are you here, Greg? You just wasted part of your day.

Mark (Iowa)

Regarding Johanna Long to JRM, that would be great, show what she can do with good to great equipment, do you believe she has a shot at it?

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

I think she's under contract, but those things can change. She has a lot of talent. Get this: Danica averages 23.9 points per NW race. Johanna averages 22 point per race in equipment that's half as good, if that.

Brandon (Texas)

Will David Ragan ever find a decent ride again.

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

Probably not, but ever is a long time. There are just too many young and talented guys coming up that will get the good rides.

Seth (NJ)

Do Robin Pemberton and Ryan Pemberton talk shop away from the race track?

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

Probably not as much as you might think because there's a bit of a conflict of interest involved.

Seth (NJ)

Is Scotty Speed gonna be running a full time cup schedule in the Leavine Family Racing Ford next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

Maybe. Does it matter since it isn't a team that actually trying to compete?

Larry (MI)

Has the 18 team basically become a test team for the 11 and how do you think Kyle will handle being 3rd in line behind Denny and Matt next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

Kyle isn't a very happy camper right now, but he was a good soldier Sunday when he helped Denny get a wrapper off his grill. It's just really strange how the 18 keeps having engines issues and the other cars don't.

Ron (OH)

Wouldn't Regan Smith to the 47 car be better than having Labonte?

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

Maybe, but the driver isn't the problem there.

bobby (michigan)

how much do a racer like jeff gordan make yearly?

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

Lots and lots of cash. In the $10 million-plus range.

Molly Maid (Taking a break in Terry's Kitchen)

Hi Terry! The union says that I get a short break to ask a question. Other than a freak crash or engine problem, is this weeks race Jimmy's to lose? or will he be upset this week? Thanks!!! Back to work I go......

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

I need to read your contract. I may have to go with replacement maids. Yes, Dover is JJ's house. He might as well call his shot.

greg (la)

whos ur top 5 and dark horse

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

JJ, Bowyer, Kenseth, Kahne, Harvick. My darkhorse is Ambrose.

Nate (TX)

Jr. hasn't really done much since June at Michigan so do you think this year is just another season ending meltdown?

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

A meltdown. No. He's still in the hunt.

Rob (FL)

Recent history shows that the 14 will struggle at Dover. Is this a Chase make or break weekend for that team?

Terry Blount
  (2:35 PM)

No, but he can't afford to finish 30th. No one can really. This points system is better than the old one, but it gives too much of a penalty for a bad finish. Gordon was third Sunday, but didn't move up in the standings and only gained 2 points. His bad finish at Chicago is killing him.

Brandon (Texas)

How many championships do you think Jimmie Johnson will end with when its all said and done.

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

I'll guess seven to tie the legends.

Bart (East Bay)

Hi Terry, do you think Coach needs to to a team swap to help Kyle like Mr. Hendrick did and switch 11 team to 18 and 20 team to 11?

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

Why would you do that when you have a potential championship team with the 11?

danny (OH)

Dont forget that in june, 24 had the best car, even jj and knaus said so afterwards, if it wasn't for a bad pit stop...you think 24 can win at Dover?

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

Yes, I think he can. No, I don't think he will.

Scott (Charlotte)

Terry lets be fair J. Long did not run Darlington, Dover, Pheonix and the three road courses. Also you don't pass Denny Hamlin in Gibbs equipment with bad equipment.

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

It's not the equipment; it's the fact that the performance hasn't equaled the quality of he equipment, which is why the Eurys are gone.

Ron (OH)

Shouldn't the drivers in the Chase be allowed to throw out their worst race in the chase? If a driver gets taken out in a wreck that wasn't his fault it puts too much luck into determining the champion because of the current point system.

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

Luck is a part of it. I think points shouldn't be awards for finishing lower than 20th. Keep the 1 point per spot format, but award a max of 25 (with bonus points) for winning and 1 for 20th. The rest of the field gets 0. That also would elimnaye the ridiculous trend of returning the the track with a destroyed car just to get 1 or 2 more points.

Dylan (WI)

This is a little of topic....but what did you think of last nights MNF game?

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

It was a joke. But it wasn't only the last play. The officials badly missed about 20 calls, many of which went against Seattle. The NFL should be ashamed for allowing this to happen. It's an embarrassment that has to end.

Dylan (Wi)

What is it like being a celebitry

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

I don't know. I'll have to ask Marty.

Kip (Calif.)

Kyle Busch has 1 win and 10 top 5's. Why does that seem like a disappointment when for every other driver in NASCAR that is considered a succesful season?

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

Because Kyle is one of the most talented drivers in NASCAR, racing for a top organization, and he expects to compete for the title.

Scott (Charlotte)

Has any of the teams speculated whether it will be pack racing or tandum racing at Dega?

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

It will be mostly pack racing with everyone pairing up at the end for a crazy finish.

Teri (Burbank)

Realistically, how high in the Chase do you see Matt Kenseth finishing considering the lackluster 2 weeks?

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

Maybe 6th of so.

JL (KC)

So why don't you rate Kahne's chances with JJ, BK, and DH? He shows that if he avoids the bad luck (which he, admittedly, seems to find too many times), he can run with anyone.

Terry Blount
  (2:47 PM)

I can't list everybody JL. Kasey is strong, but I think his championship year will come later.

Jay (Ga)

If Biffle can get past Mville with a decent finish, what are his chances if he's top 5 and 10 everywhere else?

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

Everywhere else after that is only three races. And Biff is very good at Texas and Homsestead, so pretty good.

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

It's so he can keep his options open and try to land a quality ride somewhere in 2014.

Jeremy (Port Angeles, WA)

How do you think Danica will do at Dover for her 1st time in a Sprint Cup car?

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

Frankly, I think she'll get schooled. It's a very tough track. If she finishes without wrecking it will be a good day.

Ryan (WI)

Let's be honest Smoke sucks at Dover. Who finishes better, Him or Danica?

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

You're kidding, right? Unless he wrecks, Tony will finish ahead of his teammate.

Teri (Burbank)

Silly question ... do you expect to see Jr. married by the beginning of the 2013 season?

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

He said no, but I think this is the one.

Bob (NH)

If you ask me the chase should be elimination style. Two every couple races to you get to two at the End Winner takes all. Just my two cents

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

I'm in favor of an elimination process, but I would like to see four drivers still in it at Miami.

Jeremy (New Roads, LA)

Do you think Cousin Carl can make the Chase next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

I will be very surprised if he doesn't.

Eric (GA)

Do you think Dover will lose a race if it continues to have attendance problems? They seem increasingly desperate to put butts in the seats.

Terry Blount
  (2:56 PM)

Frankly, I think most tracks should have only one race. I would put Dover at the top of that list. But where would you put that race? What really needs to happen is fewer races.

greg (la)

who u got to win sunday i say logano sweeps

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

Wow. You are the gambler Greg. You can get some big odds on that one. I'm going to go with JJ in the Cup race.

Zach Cross (Church Hill)

How much does Clint Bowyer make a year.

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

More than everyone on this chat combined.

Jay (Ga)

How much does Terry Blount make a year

Terry Blount
  (2:59 PM)

Just enough to continue to feed my dog.

Luke (Indy)

Hey Terry, Love your blogs! Do you think Penske will hire AJ Allmendinger for his vacant seat left by Ryan Briscoe in his INDY CAR stable, as AJ was a very successful CART driver before joining NASCAR?

Terry Blount
  (3:00 PM)

First, there is no vacant seat as of this moment. We'll see what happens. But I think AJ could run well if he went back to open wheel.

Zach Cross (Church Hill)

I make 900,000 a year just sitting in the office.

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

900,000 M&Ms doesn't count.

Mark (IA)

Do any of the team employees, PR people, drivers, owners read chats?

Terry Blount
  (3:02 PM)

Maybe if they get really bored and want a laugh or two.

Terry Blount
  (3:03 PM)

Gotta run folks. Tons to do today. Join me on NASCAR Now Thursday when I talk about Silly Season. Have a great week. Don't make any crazy calls in the end zone. Peace.
