Greetings all, thank you so much for coming.
Are you sold that all the teams in this division feel like they have the guy at QB that they need?
Do they all think it? Sure. Do Jacksonville and Tennessee know for sure yet? No matter the degree of their belief, no.
When can the Jags expect Rashad Jennings back healthy so they can have a compliment to MJD?
What are you honest chances, not a set prediction, that the Titans can win Sunday? Under 25%?
What weaknesses do you see in the Houston Texans' team that will hurt them in the playoffs/superbowl?
Matt Schaub's inexperience in big games. Certainly we'd like to see him perform well in one of those situations to be more of a believer in their potential to make a big Super Bowl run. Kareem Jackson as the second corner isn't a strength. But they do not have a lot of holes or weaknesses. That doesn't mean they automatically win.
Where have I been? Am I even on the field?
I can't take all this criticism from the public, so I'm hiding where no one will think to look for me. I'm not watching film and figuring anything out to help my game... I'm just using this big room to count my money. Think anyone will find me in here?
This afternoon you talk to reporters. I won't make it, but you'll tell them how you're playing fine, I am certain.
Last Sunday's Titans vs Lions... Game of the Year???
Will be hard to top. But there are a lot of games left.
I read the piece early talking about how our defense is underperforming in the second half of the season. If this trend continues do you think Jerry Gray will be on his way out? The titans can't expect 2 special teams tds and 1 defense td every game.
I'd be hugely surprised to see any coaching change during the season.
Regrettably, I haven't seen much of the Texans this season... I hear their defense is *serviceable* to say the least. Do you think the Titans O-line is going to be able to stay upright enough this week to allow the Hurt Locker to pass downfield much? The line held up pretty well against a strong Lions D-line... Any chance of seeing a repeat performance?
I don't think Detroit's line played well. I don't expect the Titans will benefit from a similar thing in Houston.
Who deserves the blame for the one play, GW touchdown given up in Indy last Sunday?
Combo of Sergio Brown, the nickel who got beat, and Antoine Bethea, the safety who was a little out of position.
If Robinson is unable to go this Sunday, who slips into the starting role? Thomas or Shorts?
I hope Shorts or Elliott. Leave Thomas as the No. 3 guy working the slot.
Why am I so scared of getting beat deep even after seeing all of this underneath stuff is killing my defense? from the pass rush having enough time to get there to run support from where the safeties are basically non existent until its 15yd down the feild. Why am I not changing this and will I before I get fired?
You seem pretty stubborn with it. Play not to get beat deep Sunday and you'll get gashed by the run.
Is Kevin Walter staying healthy opposite Andre Johnson the key to Houston making a serious Super Bowl run?
Let me see if I got this correct: You're asking if Kevin Walter's health is a key to the Texans' ability to be successful? I'd rank Walter's health behind the health of at least a dozen other guys.
Can the Titans be succesful throwing the ball 50 times a game? Seems like they are modeled on the Giants offense which is pass-first. Why not just write the run game off entirely? Is it pride?
Partly pride. But also a fear of putting too much on Locker. Don't abandon it entirely. But be pass-first. Pass to set up the run. Use short passes as long hand offs. I am a proponent of all of that.
John Clayton just wrote an interesting piece in his "mailbag" column about how the rise of rookie quarterbacks have seen running back carries increase, referencing specifically Jacksonville's situation with Blaine Gabbert and MJD. Do you buy that we'll see a semblance of a return to running the ball with more rookie QBs coming into the league?
I think it sounds good. And if you've got MJD, great. But what if you've got Donald Brown and Vick Ballard and a bad line? What if you've got a struggling Chris Johnson and no push?
The Colts have struggled in the 2nd half of all three games. Do you attribute this more to new coaches or a young team not making the necessary adjustments? Or something else?
Both. Coaches still figuring out what players can handle. Players still showing what they can and can't handle. Also not having the talent they need, that's the primary issue.
Does JJ Watt have a legitimate shot at DPOY? has a 3-4 DE ever won that award?
J.J. Watt column coming shortly. No reason he couldn't win it if he has a big sack number and plays like this. Don't know about 3-4 end history with award.
who has the best team page? i think the work john oehser and the rest of the jaguars staff have done make theirs the best website in the nfl.
The Jaguars hiring John, who's got beat experience, to be a dedicated writer for their site, makes it the best to me. I didn't realize we were counter programming to each other chat-wise. So content-wise I like Jags' site. Looks wise, I think there could be more debate.
Do we see Harper or Ringer (when healthy) start to get carries? At some point we have to admit that CJ is now just a third down back. And before you answer with your snark, anything is better than what they are getting now. At least try it.
I'm up for trying something. I don't think CJ is a third-down back though. He's about getting carries. On third down he may have to block or catch a pass.
I see there being plenty of penalties this weekend while the real refs try to get the game back under control. What do you think?
I think they won't do anything but officiate the game in front of them. They aren't going to do anything to counteract what's happened with the three weeks of replacements.
Bruce Smith won the AP DPOY award twice, in 1990 and 1996. Back to the Colts, can anything be expected out of Darius Butler?
Keep trying guys that you can get at corner. Why not? Good job on Smith.
Connor Barwin hasn't exactly lit up the stat sheet (although he got hot later in the year in 2011). To what degree will this affect his contract negotiations?
It's early still. Everyone says he will still get some numbers and is playing well.
Colts O-line the worst group you have ever seen?
Better than last year's, I think.
What are your thoughts on the right side of the Texans' O-line? Do you think Newton will be the guy going into next season?
I don't like the splitting time thing. But it worked for Duane Brown at the start. So we have to wait and see. Newton has a ton of upside.
Why do we always hear in the preseason that certain players are going to have an impact during an upcoming season only for it to never materialize?
Teams hopefully push expectations of guys, who then don't pan out. To be fair we also hear of guys ready to make big jumps who do.
Will Gabbert ever be able to develop into the quarterback Jacksonville needs if the playcalling continues to be this conservative?
It can't continue to be this conservative.
Ever since I retired, doesn't it seem like the Titans' O-Line has gone from one of the best in the league to one of the worst? Should I come out of retirement?
They forced your retirement, you didn't choose to stop playing. It's ancient history now, however. It's not like you can return and be the same guy you were several years ago.
Fred Taylor goes into the Pride of the Jaguars Sunday. Whats your favorite Fred memory?
In Fred's prime, I was covering the Titans. And those guys respected Fred immensely. Keith Bulluck, who's now a weekly guest on my radio show, used to say "Fred's no punk." Which is a big Keith compliment.
Andrew Luck and T.Y. Hilton's chemisty seems to get better and better each week. Maybe not this yr but do you see him being a big playmaker in the future? Kids got potential
I see him being a playmaker as a third this year. On some Sundays.
with each week the divide between the texans and the rest of the AFCS looks to be increasing. Do you see them sweeping the division?
I get this a lot. It's very hard to sweep a division. The Texans are a lot better than the other three. But odds are good one of those three finds a way to beat Houston at some point. Division games have a funny way of going against the grain.
Jags have always spoke highly of Derek Cox. He seems hurt quite a bit though. When his contract is up, does he get treated like an elite corner or a good one (due to injuries)?
Have to see what he does the rest of this year.
I feel like you've been taking a lot of heat lately for your snarky attitude in the chats. Let it be known that this reader finds it makes the chats all the more entertaining.
So noted. Thank you.
CJ a unwilling to be more part of the passing game or coaching staff not doing enough to get him involved? seemd a guy with his speed would open up alot of things if he was more of a threat in the short passing game.
Seems unwilling or unable to catch certain kinds of passes, particularly a swing where he's moving and catching at the same time.
What do you think is the biggest cause of Jacksonville's offensive problems? Conservative playcalling? Gabbert's passing ability? Lack of offensive line? Something else?
Protection and receivers (with drops) remain big issues. Need to get healthy on the line and Blackmon's head straight.
PK, I've done the best I can. I am getting all kinds of hate mail and threats. Was the collective effort of the replacements that bad? Since I am out of work do you have any suggestions on where I can find a job?
You're not out of work. You still have your intial officiating job.
What does Freeman's role in the Indy defense become once Angerer is back? Is there a chance they try him outside as a better backup for Freeney?
Great question. They'll have three good inside guys. Maybe they'll work him in practice outside, who knows?
Week 3 is way too early for a bye. If your the schedule-maker, at what point in the season would you start scheduling byes?
Week 6 I think.
Why does it seems like the Titans forget the opposing teams have TEs? Even if it is a top tier TE they seem to be forgotten by the Titans D. I think Dressen might have a big game this weekend
Dreessen might have a big game? For Denver?
Just wanted to thank you for the reccomendation. I was visiting family in Jacksonville and had dinner at Marker 32. Great vibe and the food was legendary. Keep up the fine reporting, and try not to be so hard on my Jags!
Tougher QB? Schaub or Big Ben?
If Britton and Bradfield can stay on the line throughout the whole game, do you see M. Lewis becoming a bigger factor in the passing game, and more of an outlet. We all know Blaine gets rid of it in less than 2 seconds even if there isnt pressure
Yes, wrote that yesterday. Lewis will be bigger in the pass game once the line is healthy.
I just saw that the Colts cut Trai Essex. Any idea why? Wasn't he playing a lot? They seem to need all the help they can get on the o-line
To make room for their new corner. Clearly expecting Reitz to be healthy after the bye.
Do you see Dwight Freeney staying in Indy much longer, after this season?
No. This will be it.
Aaron Ross seems to have really struggled thus far for the Jags. Was he overrated or is he just struggling early?
Right now looks like he was overrated.
Think if the Jags had one their 1st game agaisnt the Vikes, they're widely labeled as a potential breakout team this year? Funny how 30 seconds can change perspective so much.
And people think the Vikings are breaking out. Big 30 seconds.
When Bud Adams heads to that big Astrodome in the sky, despite the franchise move, should the history for the Oilers become part of the Texans tradition. No Titan fan cares about what Dan Pastrani did in Houston back in the 1970's. NFL got it right with the Browns becoming the Ravens, but the tradition stayed in Cleveland, will the correct this retroactively?
He gets to decide. And he took the history to Nashville.
Paul, om the 3HL, they had Verner talking about JG's defensive scheme when it comes to leaving huge cushions between the CB and the WR. Verner said that it wasn't the cb's giving cushion but that it was a lot of the zone that the LB is supposed to cover. Shouldn't the Titans be playing a lot tighter on defense in the secondary?
Or those linebackers have to get into that space faster.
<a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/afcsouth/post/_/id/41572/hot-watt-looking-to-break-mold-of-3-4-ends" target="_blank">Hot Watt looking to break the mold of 3-4 ends</a>
I liked seeing the spread offense. I know that Detroit was thing in the secondary so it really help. Is spreading thing with Houston a good way to go considering Kareem Jackson and some of the other backs aren't as strong? Also, More Lavelle is needed in the offense, in my opinion, your thoughts?
More Hawkins at the expense of what other receiver? Spreading things out is a good way for the Titans to attack anyone now, period, providing they can pass protect.
MJD looks to be making another run at rushing leader...does he have a good chance again this year? I think he's right behind Jamaal Charles right now.
I think another rushing title for MJD would mean they've had a bad season. They have to throw it more and better to win more games.
Given his lack of production and onerous contract, might it make sense for the Titans to try to move Chris Johnson before the deadline and get salary relief ala the big Red Sox/Dodgers deal?
It's not baseball. And who wants a guy with $9 million guaranteed next year who's not productive? Who's lining up for that?
Any chance we'll see Tommy Campbell playing corner soon? I think Mouton is solid but I didn't think the Titans were really that high on him.
They have no faith in Campbell, clearly. If they did, they'd be far better off with Verner in the slot in nickel.
What's the Titans biggest need right now? Pretend it's the day before the draft...
A road grading interior offensive lineman.
Is Costanza looking like a fixture at LT for the Colts(only one) he faced Peppers and Allen without giving up a sack.Probably never be a great run blocker buy is he the lone keeper on this line?
Him and Satele -- who they invested in.
OK folks, this went fast. Thanks much.
