Chat with Wally Matthews

Wallace Matthews
  (12:25 PM)

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to this week's live chat, coming to you drect from the chilly pressbox at Target Field. we'll get underway in precisely three minutes

Alex (LA) [via mobile]

What is your yankees pitching rotation for the postseason if u were manger?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:28 PM)

CC, Kuroda, Pettitte, Hughes

Carlos (ny) [via mobile]

Int or TD on MNF?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:29 PM)

don;t know. was covering a yankees game

Andy (Dayton)

Good afternoon Wally...appreciate your work! Does it seem like the organization is pushing Teixeira back too soon (this weekend?) or is it the player wanting to play? It seems like it would be of greater benefit for the team to have him rehab/rest it for another couple of weeks, especially given the nature of the injury. Thoughts?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:30 PM)

Thanks, Andy. On the contrary, I kind of get the feeling Girardi for one doesn;t want to rush him back, esp on the turf in Toronto. I could be completely wrong -- it certainly wouldn;t be the first time -- but I think we'll see Tex vs. Boston on Monday at the Stadium. BTW, there's only a week left in the season.

Fred (Tampa)

Forget about the P Wally, let?s concentrate on the positional players. Assume this starting lineup on OD 2013: Martin, Tex, Cano, Jeter, A-Rod, Gardner, and Grandy. Need RF. Would you bring back Ichiro and if so how much would you pay him? Jones or Ibanez seemed to show their age during the dog days (a little younger version of them would be nice), Chavy?s health is questionable, and he?s the backup for the injury prone A-Rod. Assuming 12 P, that leaves a RF + 5 role players. Name the non-starters from within the organization. I?ll consider TBD shorthand for either a FA or a possible trade.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:33 PM)

Whew. Let's see. Martin is not a slam dunk to come back, but I would bring him back on a one-year at about 4M. Ichiro on a one-year, also, have no idea how much it would take to keep him. Let Jones walk, bring back Chavy on another one year. Role players: Nix, Nunez, and three TBDs. RF is the big question. Don;t think Swisher is coming back, but is they can re-sign ichiro, what's wrong with Gardy-Grandy-Ich as the everyday 2013 OF?

george (boston)

8 games left - what's your guess at the Yanks record? Let's say 5-3. That would mean the O's would have to play to 6-1 to force a tiebreaker. So ... Yanks pretty much a division lock?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:34 PM)

I figured at the start of this stretch the Yankees would win at least 6 of these last 10 games, and more likely seve. They are 1-1 so far, so sticking with my gut, that means a final record of 95-67

Teon (Richmond)

Does Jeter Return next year

Wallace Matthews
  (12:35 PM)

seriously? hes signed through next year with a player option for 2014. so this question is best asked a year from now

jordan (bloomsburg pa)

hey do you think the yankees will get clutch hits in the playoffs and how far do you think they will go?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:36 PM)

If I could answer questions like this I would make my living at the racetrack or on Wall St. I can;t see into the future but I know they are capable of getting clutch hits, just not all th etime. As for how far they will go in October, it all depends on the pitching

James F (NY)

Love the work Wally. Assuming Granderson doesn't fit in the $189m plan, what do you think about picking up the option and looking to trade him for a couple of prospects at the higher levels of the minors (particularly an outfield bat). Seems like the Yankees minors depth is at the lower levels and the only trade bait the Bombers have is Granderson (assuming they won't lock him up longer term)?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:38 PM)

I agree that the question of whether to sign Grandy long-term, which looked like a slam dunk last year, is very much in doubt now. Your plan sounds like one the team could explore, because you are absolutely right, the Yankees OF prospects are a couple of years removed from playing at Yankee Stadium. And thank you for the kind words

Fred (Tampa)

Wally, I realize that you?re a sportswriter, not a legal or courthouse reporter, but what?s the latest on Louise Meanwell? I presume her Sept 6 court date was postponed? Haven?t seen anything in the competition?s papers (I beg your pardon) and Google reports nothing recent. Is she in a witness protection program? Inquiring minds want to know.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:39 PM)

Don;t know and wouldn;t report it unless it had a direct effect on the performance of the team or the GM. This is a sports website, not TMZ

Melaku (CA)

Thanks for the work, Wally. A-Rod is aging daily, would Girardi move him down the batting order?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:42 PM)

Joe has been resistant to making that move for the past two seasons, and I'm not sure what it would take for him to do it. But when you consider that he has less HRs than Russell Martin in 30 more ABs, it becomes hard to ignore the fact that he is no longer a cleanup hitter

Dohson (NYC)

What's the latest on gardner in terms of hitting? I heard he was going to take BP soon, but is that true? Can we expect to see him in a full game before the year is over?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:44 PM)

I saw him in the indoor cage this morning but he still has not had "live" BP, meaning on the field yet, and will not until tomorrow in Toronto at the earliest. After that, he said he would need 2-3 BP session before being ready to hit in a game, and Girardi didn;t sound at all convinced that we would see gardner hit in a game at all this season

Austin (DC)

After a botched managerial call like what took place last night do you feel as if girardi is fair to the media in answering questions?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:46 PM)

Well, I don;t know what you could really expect out of him. he is reticent by nature to give candid answers, he never secondguesses himself before the media and you knew he wasn;t going to admit making a mistake with Logan last night. I don;t have any problem with that even if I disagreed with the strategy. If I have any complaint with Girardi it is that he refuses to give a straight answer to obvious questions. But is it fair? It's all fair, i suppose

Wallace Matthews
  (12:46 PM)

Apologize if anyone is having problems accessing the chat. i'm seeing some technical glitches today

Austin (DC)

How would you say he compares to other managers in terms of media relations? Understanding that he is ny so it complicates things

Wallace Matthews
  (12:51 PM)

well, having covered Dallas Green, Bobby Valentine, Buck Showalter, Torre, and Willie Randolph, I would say he is no match for Torre -- no one could be -- is less interesting than Valentine, not nearly as candid as Green, is more pleasant than Buck was back in 1995 and a little more engaging than Willie, who was always a bit suspicious of the media. he could make things a lot easier on everyone, himself included, if he could let his guard down a little bit, and Imust admit, he has improved significantly over the past three seasons. All in all, he's ok but not great

Vivian (San Diego)

Girardi must have know he's has been criticized for his management-by-Binder, would there be a chance that he'd step back and change to be a better manager?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:53 PM)

if he hasn;t by now, I doubt it. And one of the reasons is, he often thinks about how his moves will be perceived before he makes thiem. Just this morning, he said, "If I had stayed with Phil and the same thing happened, you all would be saying, why didn;t you bring in Logan?" so there's very little spontaneity to what he does during a game. It's all dictated by something, be it the binder or the perceived reaction from media/fans. Tough way to manage but even tougher, I would suspect, to change

Mike (Long Island)

Watching Yankee games on TV is almost depressing when you see all those empty seats (yes, I know they are paid for, but the corporate execs whose companies own them don't show up). Do the owners and Levine/Trost think for a second it was a bad idea to jack up ticket prices as high as they did?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:55 PM)

Not yet,not publicly anyway, because like a lot of corporations these days, the only thing that seems to matter to them is the bottom line. And so far, the empty seats haven;t translated into lower profits.

Glen (Hoboken)

Any chance we can get Magic Johnson to take Arod from us?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:56 PM)

If the Yankees are willing to pay the rest of his contract, I can't see why not

Eric (NY NY)

Best cure for the flu? Or just relax and hope the Yankees win?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:56 PM)

plenty of fluids, eight innings of CC and rest

Evan (Fort Lauderdale )

Do you think Phelps will play a pivotal role in the postseason?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:57 PM)

If he does, it means the starting pitching has failed, because if he goes, it will probably be as a long man

Mike (Long Island)

Can you imagine a time in the near future when MLB uses scab umpires and locks out the real umps in case of an unresolved contract negotiation?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:58 PM)

they nearly did back in the 1990s, for those of you old enough to remember, so anything is possible

Adam (ma)

do you think they will trust cory wade in the post season?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:58 PM)

Uh, no

Evan (Fort Lauderdale )

Giants or Eagles?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:58 PM)

when did the football season start?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:59 PM)

Thanks, everyone, for joining in today. Game time. we'll do it again next week before the last game of the regular season
