Chat with Ian Begley

Ian Begley
  (2:01 PM)

Hey, what's up guys and girls? Hope everyone is doing well .... As always, thanks for coming out ... Training camp starts on Tuesday so there's plenty to talk about .... Let's get started ....

Lafayette, louisiana [via mobile]

Will rasheed wallace be at trainig camp october 1st ?

Ian Begley
  (2:03 PM)

Good question. I'm told Rasheed is mulling over his decision on whether to come out of retirement or not ... The Knicks are also interested in Kenyon Martin and Josh Howard. But I think if Rasheed told them today he's ready to come out of retirement, he'd be there on Oct. 2

Mike (New City, New York)

Why aren't the Knicks going after Shawne Williams? Seems like a good fit.

Ian Begley
  (2:05 PM)

Hey Mike, You hear rumblings that some in the org weren't happy with Shawne when he chose to go to the Nets last year, so that could be a factor at play here ....

Michael C. (Westport, CT)

If the Knicks struggle out of the gate and the Nets don't, can you see a Knicks coaching change sooner rather than later?

Ian Begley
  (2:08 PM)

You never know what's going to happen when a team with high expectations struggles, so anything is possible. But keep in mind that Woodson was re-signed over the summer, so you'd think he will have a long grace period here. But I don't think the Nets' success/lack of success would play a major role in the Knicks' decision to make a coaching change

Benny (NYC)

How about this scenario during the season--Avery Johnson out and D'Antoni in?

Ian Begley
  (2:10 PM)

Ha. I don't see Avery going anywhere anytime soon. And I don't see Mike coming back to NYC anytime soon.

Joe S (21st street)

Have the Knicks expanded their rehab center to accommodate all the senior citizens guaranteed to break down?

Ian Begley
  (2:12 PM)

Clearly, Joe is not high on all of these veteran signings...

Alex (Anaheim)

Where do you expect the Knick defense to rank in 12-13?

Ian Begley
  (2:13 PM)

Hey Al, In terms of defensive efficiency (points allowed per 100 possessions), I think they should expect to be Top 10. If things break right, and they stay healthy, they could be Top 5. I believe they finished the season ranked 6th last season.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What do you think will be the Hardest NBA Team that the Knicks will face in 2012-2013?

Ian Begley
  (2:13 PM)

Chris, I'm thinking the list breaks down like this: 1. Miami 2. LAWhat do you think?

Dexter (PDX)

Sheed's greatest moment in his career came in a post-game press conference following a game where he was fined for skipping that game's presser. He replied to every single question with "Both teams played hard." Awesome. He clearly belongs on this team...

Ian Begley
  (2:14 PM)

Ah, 'Sheed. Gotta love him ...

Kenneth (NC )

Ian my man...what are the chances Knicks pick up Sheed?

Ian Begley
  (2:15 PM)

What's up Kenneth?I think it's on Rasheed at this point. If he wants to return, there is a spot available. I don't know which way he's leaning at this point, though

Lee (NYC)

Ian, I wanted to start off by saying you do an amazing job! Do you think the Knicks would be better off with Rasheed Wallace or Josh Howard?

Ian Begley
  (2:17 PM)

Thanks a lot, Lee. I appreciate that. And thanks for reading .... I'd go with Josh Howard because of he's versatile and can plug several holes if the Knicks have to deal with injury issues

josh (ATL)

any chance kenyon martin gives up and takes the vet minimum from the knicks by next week?

Ian Begley
  (2:18 PM)

Hey Josh, My gut says that Kenyon will wait it out and see if a better offer presents itself during camp. Someone may suffer and injury and create an opening for K-Mart.

Semir (Brooklyn)

Do you believe the Knicks will finish ahead of the Nets this season?

Ian Begley
  (2:20 PM)

I think they will, provided they stay healthy. I think the Knicks will be strong defensively and I have a feeling it may take a few weeks for the Nets to develop chemistry .... The Knicks have more returning pieces and should develop cohesion quickly.

Lee (NYC)

Who do you think will have a bigger impact. Marcus Camby or Ronnie Brewer and why?

Ian Begley
  (2:22 PM)

Hey Lee, This is no slight to Marcus, but I think the Ronnie Brewer signing may be one of the most important for the Knicks this offseason. If Ronnie stays healthy, he should be able to provide the kind of perimeter defense that the Knicks got last year from Iman Shumpert. He also won't take shots away from Carmelo, Amare or Ray Felton in the starting five. On paper, he seems like a great piece in the starting 5.

Nedim Clifford-Brolley (Utica, NY)

Hey Ian, what are your thoughts on Carmelo's #17 ranking? Not that it matters but I would have expected ESPN to give him a higher ranking based on his offensive prowess, olympic success, and his dominant month of April last season.

Ian Begley
  (2:24 PM)

Hey Nedim, I think Anthony should've been ranked higher, but my colleagues no doubt penalized Anthony for his shortcomings on the defensive end and his inefficiency on offense. Anthony has the ability to be a strong defender, particularly on the ball, but scouts bemoan the fact that his effort isn't always there. But I think, based on his offensive prowess alone, he should have been higher than 17... What do you think?

Dexter (PDX)

Which owner's musical abilities do you respect more, James Dolan or Jay-Z?

Ian Begley
  (2:25 PM)

Ha! I think we can all agree on this one: JD is no Jay-Z

Will (NYC)

Ian, where is training camp this year for the Knicks? Saratoga? College of Charleston? Or will they just have it at their training center in Westchester?

Ian Begley
  (2:25 PM)

Hey Will, They are at the training facility in Westchester this year

Aaron (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

Training camp is in 6 days. You think K-Mart will crack & sign for vet min? If so, think it'll be with eh Knicks? He's running out of options

Ian Begley
  (2:26 PM)

He is running out of options at the moment, but others can present themselves during camp or during the season. If guys get hurt, a team could call K-Mart to replace them ...

Jon (Middletown,Nj)

Why is it you think Melo and stat will develop chemistry, they haven't done it yet and most critics agree that they will never work together and that they can't play off eatch other and the spacing is always terrible now with amare and Tyson on the court at the same time the paint is crowded. Please answer I'm trying to convince myself it can work but I need reasons

Ian Begley
  (2:31 PM)

Hey Jon, I'm not convinced that it can happen either. I ask scouts about this whenever I can. What they say is that Amare and Carmelo like to operate in the same space, so they get in each other's way frequently. Furthermore, Anthony thrives in isolation and Stoudemire's best in pick and roll situations. I think it would work best if Amare comes off the bench, but that probably won't happen. Another option could be having Anthony operate on one side of the floor and Amare operate on another. But operating under those guidelines would give the defense an inherent advantage

Ian Begley
  (2:33 PM)

Alright fellas (and ladies), thanks a lot for coming by, I appreciate it. You guys are always passionate and knowledgable and it's always fun talking to you... Hopefully we can do it again soon ... Take care
