Hello, everybody. Happy Friday. Sorry I'm a little late, was just listening to Ryan's presser. Let's get started.
I haven't seen the money angle regarding Revis discussed. What do the Jets do going forward? Wasn't this the last year of his contract? Would you give a guy who depended on his legs a massive contract when he's coming off ACL surgery?
I wrote about this on Tuesday, Michael. He's signed through 2013. Their plan was to extend the deal before next season because they can't tag him. My question is, how do you give a monster contract to a guy coming off major knee surgery? It complicates the situation.
Rich, This McKnight conversion to CB shows hw desperate they are but i do think he has the quickness to maybe be used on a CB blitz. Agree?
He played 1 play last season at CB (vs Balt) and blitz, causing a hurry and interception. I'm with McKnight on this: It shows they've lost confidence in his RB ability.
Hey, Rich. I think with Revis now done for the season we're really going to see what kind of a team Tannenbaum has put together here. We already know the offense looks thin. Looking back now on the offenses of 2009 and 2010 makes me extremely nostalgic - and neither were top 10 offenses. I sure hope it doesn't but now that the Jets are without Darrelle Revis it could start exposing weaknesses all over the defense as well - weaknesses we didn't think existed only because we had the best corner in the game. If it really implodes this year is Tannenbaum safe?
I agree, John. This will tell us a lot about the D that Tanny has assembled. With all the recent No. 1 picks (Wilson, Wilkerson, Coples, plus a No. 3 Ellis), they should have plenty of talent. But do they really? If Wilson goes down in flames it'll reflect poorly on Mike.
I thought the most alarming part of the Dolphins game was the way in the first half the Jets seemed half asleep -- slow and not particularly fired up. Everyone knows the team has a problem with speed at LB. But assuming there really was a lack of fire, what do you make of it and have you seen any indication Rex is addressing that?
It has nothing to do with a lack of fire. Lack of speed is more like it.
At what point should we be concerned with our rookie class? Coples is barely playing. Hill exploded in week 1, but hasn't recorded another reception since. Demario Davis?
Coples will play more this week because I see them using more 4-3. Hill is exactly what I thought he'd be -- talented kid, but he doesn't know which way is up. I'm surprised Davis not playing more. Thought he'd be involved in sub packages.
How do you think the run defense will be able to stack up against Frank Gore? How much does losing Revis affect stopping the run?
Great point, Ryan. People forget that Revis is excellent in run support. His absence will hurt perimeter run defense. The JEts will load up to stop the run, putting Landry (or maybe even Cro) on Davis.
Yes losing Revis sucks big time, but this starting defense of 11 still has 7 former 1st round picks (Harris, Scott, Pouha and Bell are not) Not even counting Maybin. A coaches job is to make lemonade from lemons, but Rex seems to be given Oranges and making bad Lemonade. Shouldn?t we expect more from the best Defensive coach in the NFL?
Good point, Derek. This is what I write about in my preview column. The JEts have more 1st rnd picks on defense than the 49ers, yet the 49ers' talent is far superior. Let's see if Rex and Pettine can coach 'em up.
Rich,If Sanchez struggles the next two weeks and is under 50% completion percentage again versus the 49ers and Texans, how likely is it the Jets hand the reigns over to Tebow at QB?
Depends if they win or not. If they're 2-3 and Sanchez is at 50% ... depends if he's throwing picks. They have to be desperate to turn to Tebow, who probably will be 40%
Dont get me wrong, this defense is definitively worse off without Revis. But, if Rex is a great defensive coach, he has an opportunity to revamp his defensive approach and throw other teams a curveball. He fooled the Pats and others in 2010 by blitzing less in the end of the season and the playoffs. Maybe not having Revis will cause him and the staff to think about other schemes that other teams don't have on tape yet? Or am I working to hard to find the silver lining here?
No, not really. I hear you. Rex will get creative here, he won't sit back and be vanilla. You'll see more 4-3 this week. You might even see some 'Big Nickel' -- 3 safeties and 2 CBs. You will see some funky blitzes, too.
Huge Jets Fan! Do you think Revis will be 100 percent healthy by week 1?
He should be, barring unforeseen complications.
Does it ever get old making excuses for why the Jets don't come up big...ever? Don't give me the past 2 Pats-Giants games. There is a history of Jets and Jets media overhyping Ryan, sanchez and the rest of this team.
I don't make excuses for the Jets' failures.
Rich, any insight on Jonathan Grimes, and chances we see Grimes get some carries this Sunday?
No, but he's an interesting developmental guy. Had a scout from another team tell me he has some potential. Plus, he comes from a team that has a good eye for undrafted RBs -- Texans.
Rich, switching Joe Mcknight to CB is mindboggling. Clearly he is the most explosive back( producing a 12 yd gain vs steelers out of nothing), but yet they put Greene/Powell ahead of him who are similarly the same player, Powell has not shown anything in my opinion. Do you think Rex Ryan switching Joe Mcknight to CB is him trying to flex his muscles and trying to say he is such a great coach that he can make him into a CB? Whats your take on Mcknight? Shouldnt the Jets take advantage of his speed and home run threat?
I agree with you (for the most part). McKnight is an explosive player, but the coaches don't trust him with the ball. Makes too many mental errors, fumbles.
Rich, it seems that every time Rex goes out of his way to pump up a player they do the same thing, - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. For example, Shonn Greene (the bell cow), Muhammed Wilkerson (really stood out in pre-season), Bart Scott (the old Bart is back), Wayne Hunter (best sixth O lineman in the league), Vlad Ducasse (out there improving every day), Tebow in wildcat (keeping those DCs up at night), not to mention Vernon Gholston (Vern's coming). Is this some kind of jole? Is Rex mentioning your name the kiss of death?
Jeez, I hope he doesn't mention my name.
Hey rich thanks for doing this. Do you give the jets any chance this weekend? The niners play better d, and run the ball better. Maybe we are better on special teams. I would feel a little better if they were flying from the west coast and not Ohio.
The Jets need a def/special teams TD. They have to have zero turnovers. They have to stop Gore. They have to rattle Smith. A lot has to happen for them to win.
It's great we get Keller back. I'm not confident this week but if we are able to steal one of the next two, would it be this Sunday, or Mon night against Houston?
Ryan didn't sound nearly as confident today about Keller as he did yesterday. Just saying.
Hey rich your prediction this sun made me sad. 49ers don't have a great passing attack . We just have to stop the run. Will Rex play more zone, or just try to confuse Smith?
Jets will play usual man-to-man, aggressive in press coverage. SF WRs don't scare them, but the TE does. No. 1 priority is stopping Gore. They'll load the box and leave the CBs in single.
Why do the Jets sometimes leave Sanchez on the field when Tebow is at QB? Wouldn't it be better to have another receiver there?
Hey, that's the Wildcat. Don't you love watching Sanchez try to block?
Any guesses on why Kyle Wilson didn't want to talk to the media on Wednesday?
Got blown out of proportion. I think he sent word to the PR staff that he'd talk on Thursday. My response is, why not both days? Is that such a burden?
Curious as to your assessment of David Harris being overpaid. Cant really argue with having that much money in a linebacker that, while a solid player v. the run, isn't really a game changing player. No OC in the league is thinking how to game plan for him.
I guess you could say he's overpaid, but he's not the most overpaid in the league. Look, he's a very good, two-down linebacker, but he's not a game changer. Yet he's being paid like one.
Any reason why the Jets have refused to call up Jordan White from the Practice Squad? I feel they have a real gem there that they refuse to utilize. I mean 140 catches in College is 140 catches no matter what division you play. Also I remember you saying he ran routes very well in camp.
He has a long way to go. He's a slot receiver, at best, and right now Kerley is playing well.
Rich, I am a believer that an angry Jet team is almost unbeatable. I feel strongly they will beat either the 49ers or Texans. Not sure which. What is the vibe in the locker room this week? Angry and disrespected for being written off OR woe-is-us and dejected without Revis? Which opponent gets the angry Jets?
Before the season, I picked the Houston game as a Jets win. Not sure about that now. There is no mood in the locker room, just players saying the right thing. Not much swagger or defiance.
In the last two weeks, it seems like Jeff Cumberland has made two crucial mistakes, his wrong route was blamed for the Sanchez INT in the end zone against Miami and Cumberland turned around too late when Sanchez audibled on a third-down play against the Steelers. Are the Jets starting to sour on Cumberland? Any chance they add Winslow?
Great point on Cumberland -- two big mistakes. But, no, Winslow appears done.
Over the past couple of years, I've noticed that there's a high correlation between how Rex has described the week's practice and how well the Jets perform on Sunday (when he says they've been tearing it up in practice, they usually do well, etc.) What have you been hearing about how the team's preparations this week??
Today he said they had a great week of practice. A lot of times it's just lip service. As Parcells used to say, don't tell us about the labor, show us the baby.
what role do you expect Joe McKnight to play on defense this week and going forward?
I'd be STUNNED if he plays on defense this week. He has a long way to go.
whats your thoughts on greene powell situation. will powell be used more to utilize his speed against a strong pursuit defense in the 49ers?
I'm told that nothing has changed, that Greene will continue to get the bulk of the carries.
Rich - is Rex planning to change the defense that much with Revis out (i.e. more zone, fewer safety blitzes, etc)? Behind all of the confident talking, is the coaching staff concerned about Wilson in the starting line-up?
I can tell you this: The blitz stinks so far. Check out the stats in my game preview.
With Kyle Wilson still covering the slot WR during 3+ WR sets, how do you see Ellis Lankster holding up against the outside WR? Do you think he has enough to get the job done?
Yes, Wilson will slide inside in 3 WR sets, but the 49ers don't use a lot of 3 wide. At times, you will see 3 safeties + 2 CBs -- big nickel.
Hi Rich,We've been waiting for McKnight to get a bigger role on offense since he started to break out as a returned last season. With LT gone, we thought this would be the year, though he just hasn't got the touches. The reason given is that Powell is a better protector. Even Pettine said that if he's not going to be used ( at RB ), they may try him at CB or something along those lines. So whatever success we fans see, the coaches clearly see something different. And after his comments and in my opinion, sulking, I'm starting to see the same immature player that we saw complaining on Hard Knocks. Thoughts ?
Talented player -- but it takes more than talent. McKnight, by his own admission, says he has to be more consistent. Doesn't block well. Makes wrong reads with the ball. Fumbles. Hence, bye, bye RB.
After rushing the passer so well late last year, Aaron Maybin has been very quiet. Do you think offences are keying in on him?
In my film study, I've seen a couple of instances where teams are chipping him with a RB. For the most part, he's just playing small. A lot of his sacks last year were second-effort, coverage sacks. Not happening for him this year.
Do you think Rex is keeping Revis on the roster for a possible superbowl appearance his way of telling the team that the season is not over ? You know, a motivational ploy ?
Ding, ding, ding. Give that man a prize.
Does Greene have to worry about losing the starting gig?
Not right now. Ask me in a couple of weeks.
Rich, how does the staff feel about Garrett McIntyre? I feel that even though we lost he played a good game against the steelers. Could we be seeing him take more snaps?
He's been playing a lot. Tremendous motor. Gotta love players like that. Athletically, he's stiff and limited, gets exposed in space. Teams run to his side. But, like I said, love the effort.
Rich- How would you compare the loss of Revis with Testaverde in '99? Will the defense be able to rise to the occasion at least against teams not called the 49ers, Texans or Pats? Thanks
Funny, but I talked to Vinny about this the other day. Losing a CB, even a dominant one like Revis, isn't as crippling as losing a QB. The defense won't be as good, but if there's enough talent there (notice I said 'if'), they should be respectable.
Hey Rich, how was the locker room been this week? Ready to circle the wagons, or doom-and-gloom due to Revis?
We'll find out on Sunday. I don't mean to be evasive, but it's hard to tell the mood in the locker room. I do sense a little Revis hangover, but who knows how that manifests itself on Sunday?
tebow looked slow and out of sorts last week against the 'phins. however, i still believe that he was used correctly. will we be seeing more of tebow at te/fb?
You'll see more of him. Bet on it. Not sure in what role, though.
Some food for thought for you Rich. Has Sanchez ever lead the Jets on two successive touchdown drives in his career? When was the last time the Jets sacked a QB without blitzing? Wouldn't you agree that the 49ers are everythign Rex wants the Jets to be but aren't?
Yes to the last question. The Jets have only 3 sacks this year, so there's not a lot to go on. But I do know their blitz is getting torched. I'm pretty sure Sanchez has had two consecutive TD drives, but I'll check.
With the Pats struggling, can the Jets make a move to the top of the AFC East even with all the injuries and QB battles?
Technically, they're on top of the AFC East. But I think they can stick around because their schedule is a lot easier over the second half.
Rich, what is more likely to happen this week, the unveiling of the Cro package on offense or see tim tebow make a pass? Both would be epic
I vote Tebow pass. The Cro package was one of the most overblown stories in the history of sports media.
Rich, next time you bump into Shonn Greene (assuming he doesn't fall over) you might want to remind him that this is a contract year.
I'll be sure to pass that along. I'm sure his agent reminds him every week.
hey rich how come you guys say "the Niners will be an angry team this week" but not thinks like this Jets team will be fired up after losing Revis," or "this Jets team is better than the way they played against the Dolphins."
All I know is, I'll be an angry beat writer after a so-so performance last week in Miami.
To me, Sanchez really need to step up more as a leader of the offense .. something he hasn't shown me yet. He's needed now to assume that leader and guide the team on offense .. your thoughts?
I agree, but he can't run the routes for the receivers. Except for Holmes and Kerley, the route running is terrible.
Rich, any chance you can give us some inside info and not repeat what everyone already knows? Don't you have sources?
You're getting the best info right here. Don't like it, you're free to go.
Hey rich, what's with the Run D right now? Aren't our linebackers and safeties a little too talented to allow so many rushing yards? Are they just underachieving?
Pettine calls it an "outlaw" mentality -- too many players not following their assignments. Had a personnel guy tell me today that the DLM get their shoulders turned too often, creating creases.
Rich, thanks for doing the chat. This season had the making points of a make or break year for Sanchez. From how he was going to rebound after the Santonio fued to the Tebow trade. Now that Revis out, I think it just adds more pressure onto Sanchez since the defense will almost get a "free pass" without their best player. Thoughts?
Fair point, Ethan. If the defense crumbles this week without Revis, I think Rex may have to adjust the offensive philosophy and take more chances.
Rich, are Landry and Bell both healthy? Felt like I saw more Eric Smith on the field last week then I would like..
Landry and Bell have played virtually every snap in all 3 games.
Rich, regarding extending Revis - can't the Jets do something similar to Peyton/Colts? Give him a $10mill signing bonus with a $20mill roster bonus due on the first day of the 2014 league year?
That would be a $20 M cap hit, plus the pro-ration for the signing bonus plus the base salary. They'd have to cut half the team.
Just curious, is Jim Harbaugh the most boring/rude coach you've ever had to speak with?
Mangini was boring, but he was never rude. So, yeah, I'd put Harbaugh up there.
Why are the Jets not interested in resigning Plaxico Burress?
three words -- can't run anymore.
Well, I'm outta time, folks. Thanks for all the great questions. There's certainly a lot to talk about. Have a great weekend and enhoy the game on Sunday. Rich
