Fantasy Injuries with Stephania Bell

Stephania Bell
  (3:03 PM)

Good afternoon everyone. Just a heads up that today's chat will only go for half an hour. Luckily there weren't too many weekend additions to the injury report so...here we go...

Bill (Minnesota)

Hi Stephania- Any word on Jennings? Looking for a decent flex play this week and I am considering James Jones off the wire if Jennings is out. Thanks

Stephania Bell
  (3:05 PM)

Hi Bill: Nothing official but it sure looks like he's going to be out not only this week but maybe beyond. He has indicated he wants to be sure he's fully healthy before he returns and his setback according to McCarthy has him back where he started. Jones looks like a good pickup.

Brian (Mechanicsburg, PA)

Stephania, any news on Hernandez? I'm going to need him or someone on the waiver wire this week with Witten having a bye week.

Stephania Bell
  (3:07 PM)

Brian: Only that he's making progres. I am not convinced he'll be ready to return this week. The problem with his injury and the type of player he is if he comes back too soon he really risks long-term consequences with the health of his ankle. Don't see them risking that given the investment. So unless he's doing a ton more by Friday, I think he's likely out another week.

Kyle (Philadelphia, PA)

Hi Stephania,What are you hearing about Hakeem Nicks' knee? If I can move him in a trade, should I?

Stephania Bell
  (3:09 PM)

Kyle: There's a bit of a personal preference thing here. You might have a hard time trading him right now anyway given that he's missed a couple weeks in a row and people will be skeptical. I think yesterday's comments by Coughlin may have been a bit overblown b/c it sounds like he hadn't seen Nicks yet, so he didn't really know whether he had improved or not. With the foot, Nicks not practicing until Thursdays, so we're probably not going to really get an idea of whether he can do more until Thursday.

Tim (Wisconsin)

Is C.J. Spiller back to full health, and how do you see him splitting carries with Fred Jackson going forward?

Stephania Bell
  (3:10 PM)

Tim: no, not full health but came out of the game no worse. Both he and Jackson emerged OK but not really up to where they were pre-injury. I still see Jackson as the primary but the load share could change depending on matchup (prob 60-40 normally).

Noam (Modiin,IL)

I need an RB for this week is Jackie Battle a good pickup for this week

Stephania Bell
  (3:11 PM)

Noam: I wouldn't get too fooled by all the work he got. Mathews had a bad fumble the week prior and while the Chargers say Battle had more work b/c of matchup, that factored in. Mathews is expected to start this week and play more. Now if he fumbles again...

Paul (NM)

Any setback with Forte. He's got a great matchup this week

Stephania Bell
  (3:13 PM)

Paul: No major setback. He did tweak the ankle on the first play. They re-taped, he returned and toughed out the game but was not as nimble as usual and definitely felt it. I would think he'll be better in another week although I'm not necessarily expecting 100% yet.

Jeremy (Apex, NC)

SB, how is DHB progressing? At this point is it a wait and see until the bye week type deal?

Stephania Bell
  (3:15 PM)

Jeremy: SOme good news. He is back in practice today in Oakland. Now after a concussion, everything goes in stages and I doubt he's doing full practice today. Hard to project a timeframe because activity will be increased based upon response to what he did the day before.

Derrin (Plano, TX)

What's the latest on Santonio Holmes foot injury? Do you think it will keep him out for the rest of the season? Is it another Lisfranc?

Stephania Bell
  (3:17 PM)

Derrin: No official word yet. Foot and ankle specialists involved which tells you it's serious and not necessarily easy to determine. I think this is at least multiple weeks and possibly season-ending and yes, Lisfranc injury is a possibility but it's not the only possibility. Would not plan on him being around for the near future at least. Hopefully we know more later today.

Steve (Steel City)

Latest on Mendenhall? Is he worth a flex play?

Stephania Bell
  (3:18 PM)

Steve: Expected back Week 5 and yes, I think flex is perfect. Not sure how much work he sees in that initial game back. Don't imagine it's a full workload but I think they will try to get him into some rhythm in the game.

James (Dallas)

jahvid Best worth stashing if you have a roster spot?

Stephania Bell
  (3:20 PM)

James: Detroit has said zero about him. He's not even eligible to practice for a few more weeks and that depends upon him being cleared to practice. We've been given no indication either way as to whether it looks like he'll be able to return. I would not use a spot.

Brent (LA)

Good Afternoon Steph! Any word of Locker? Is Hasselbeck a must add in deep leagues?

Stephania Bell
  (3:23 PM)

Brent: Sounds like he's hurting much more this time around. The test will be once they start to move his shoulder around in therapy, how he does and can he get enough strength back around it to be able to play. If not, he might end up needing surgery (which he may need anyway but the question is whether he can get through a season or not). He's not expected to play this week for sure and next week they play Thursday. So you may want to get Hasselbeck.

Randy (Fort wayne)

THE Stephania Bell, any news on Torrey Smith? He left last Thursday's game late with an injury. Thanks!

Stephania Bell
  (3:23 PM)

Randy: His ankle, mild, expected to play as usual this week.

Anders (WI)

How's it going, Stephania? Julio Jones was apparently hampered by his hand cut Sunday. Is this something that lingers moving forward or should we expect him to be back to his old tricks this week?

Stephania Bell
  (3:25 PM)

Anders: The team didn't make much of it leading up to the game so I was surprised that it ended up being a factor. That said, sometimes it's hard to know how something will behave in game when you're not testing it much during the week (or not putting it through the same demands). Probably not much we'll know before Thursday.

Jeremy (Apex, NC)

SB, what is your take on McGahee? Big game and the ribs didn't seem to be an issue. Ok going forward?

Stephania Bell
  (3:26 PM)

Jeremy: You're right - didn't seem to be an issue. Gets better with time (barring the unusual hit) so while he might not be completely out of the woods, I think he's in good shape.

Mark (Philly)

How is Colston's foot looking for the rest of the year? Would you trade Spiller&Harvin for Charles

Stephania Bell
  (3:29 PM)

Mark: I think this week was a definite improvment. If truly a case of plantar fasciitis, it's the kind of thing that can flare up again easily. Obviously the medical staff will do everything they can to help prevent that but no guarantees. Doesn't make me want to play him any less b/c he could just as easily go on and be fine with it.And I don't do the trade b/c those are 2 electric players who can be scoring threats and as much as I like how Charles is doing, not trading the 2 for 1.

Ed (Austin)

What's the word on K.Britt? Good to go this week? Maybe better with Hasselbeck?

Stephania Bell
  (3:31 PM)

Ed: The ankle that held him out last week is not expected to do so this week. I need to see him perform at full throttle though before I'm convinced. This is still a guy who is coming off ACL surgery (and the other knee scoped) with a history of hamstring and quad injuries. Lot of talent but also risky.

Yorgrate (NYC)

What is your outlook re Pierre Garcon ROS. Any setbacks to the foot after playing through the pain?

Stephania Bell
  (3:32 PM)

Yorgrate: He said no setbacks but it was also clear he wasn't quite himself. I'm not automatically bumping him to 100% by next week. The fact he could get through a game was encouraging but I'm not ready to declare him recovered yet. Not even sure he's ready to increase his practice activity.

Stephania Bell
  (3:34 PM)

OK gang. Have to head out early today. THanks very much for stopping by. We'll be back here Friday morning at 11 a.m. and there will be two injury blogs (this afternoon and Thursday afternoon) before then. Have a great week!
