Hey gang. Check out of Turn 4 answers today. Does the Chase need a real eliminations process? Should Roush say bye-bye to Kenseth now? http://tinyurl.com/9sjp8mm
Still cant believe dover turned into a fuel mileage game.
Sam, as long as race cars use fuel, some races will end in a fuel-mileage situations. That's always been true. They only answer is to go to electric cars. And then maybe the battery would die.
Will Ryan Newman really lose his Crew & CC to Danica? Can't believe that's gonna go down well with him. Is there going to be trouble and resentment at SHR?
No. I think Ryan also is ready for a change.
what is the latest driver rumors that you have heard today?
Today? Nothing today. But it will be interesting to see who Finch puts in the 51 when Kurt leaves after this race. Maybe AJ.
Since Regan Smith lost his ride this year and David Ragan is still without a ride is it possible that next year the king puts a little more talent in the 43 with one of these underrated drivers?
It's possible a change is coming there, but I don't know how underratyed these guys are and I don't know if driving the 43 would tell us how good they could be.
Can any of you guys answer a question about Kurt without taking a shot at him?
Sure. Kurt is going to drive the 78 next week. How's that?
Kyle Busch finished 7th at Dover and went home. Why do the media make comments like "Kyle Busch left the track without speaking to the media"? Is the 7th placed, Non-Chaser required to talk to the media?
No he isn't. And have have no problem with him leaving, although he tweeted that wasn't the case. He was there and no one was around to talk. But the truth is most drivers talk whether they finish first or 41st.
A few weeks late on this, but thoughts on Ryan Hunter-Reay winning the IndyCar title? Pretty much puts to bed the question of a competitive American presence in the sport. To think people were saying in 2009 that Danica was the best American driver in IndyCar. Hilarious.
I don't know who said that, but Ryan had a great season down the stretch and he's a very talented driver. The best news to me is to see Andretti's team competitive again after Penske and Ganassi were dominating things. And how about Ed winning the race at Cali? Another American on the rise.
He's tied for most wins so far this season and he's the current points leader... but no one is talking about the 2 like he's a real contender for the championship. What are your thoughts?
What? Everyone is saying the Brad is a serious contender, and he is. He also has the best young crew chief in the biz right now with Paul Wolfe. What I appreciate about those guys is they go for. They knew they were close on fuel and rolled the dice. I like that. They're gamblers.
Any thoughts on BK's BIG shout out to the Dodge folks after his win on Sunday? Were those undertones of some sort or just being a good corporate citizen?
Just Brad being a good guy and giving credit where it's due. And isn't it interesting that the engine and engine program with the best fuel mileage is the one we won't see next year.
Terry, how far do you think Gordan climbs in the points by the time we reach the end? I've got a bet going he finishes fourth, buddy says ninth. Where you at on this?
Does it matter? I don't see him climbing higher than sixth or seventh.
Bowyer is lingering around the top of standings, does he have a legit shot at contending with the 2, 11, and 48? Especially if he pulls a 3-peat at Dega?
IMO, no. But Clint is good at Dega and could win it. What he really needs is the three guys ahead of him to get in one of the big wrecks Sunday. That's what all the guys need who are in the top 3.
Who are your top five and a darkhorse or two?
The truth is everyopne's a darkhorse at Dega, but I'll play along _ Johnson, Dale Jr., Kenseth, Bowyer and Brad K. Darkhorse picks are Kurt Busch and David Ragan.
With Burton barely in the top 20 and running like Jamie and Juan Pablo do you think he deserves a top ride like the RCR #31?
It doesn't matter. He has a contract for one more season.
Why did they move dega up closer in the chase?
Dega and KC are swapping spots next year, the only change in the entire 2013 sked. YAWN.
jr has been stuck on 7th in the pionts for the past 3 weeks with the most better chase to move up this weekand at telladega do you see him may win this weekand cause quiet honest qualifing does not mean much it is just for a pit selection is the best chase for jr to win at his favorite track you thoughts....
He could win for sure, but I don't think it matters at this point as for as the title goes unless those top three guys wreck.
I think its better, kinda get it out of the way type of thing. Dega is boring.
The end of the race at Dega never is boring.
How hot is Montoya's seat? Seems like he's replaced Travis Kvapil as the guy who's job it is to go out and randomly hit stuff.
The problem at EGR isn't the drivers. That team is just way behind the curve and really hasn't shown significant improvement this year, although they claim otherwise.
Will the Eury's be back in Nascar? What I mean is will we see them Crew Chiefiing for another team? Nationwide or Sprint?
Tony Jr. defintely will be working somewhere. Pops may decide to call it quits.
I'd like to see 2 plate races an road course and maybe Bristol in the chase. Then the Chase would really be crazy. Your thoughts
Maybe a little too crazy. To me the point is to have one of each type of track in the Chase, so it needs a road course. And frankly, it needs a shake up. The same 10 tracks every year is boring.
For a long time Jr never seemed to get better than he unloaded and I was never sure if it was more the dirver's are the crew chief's fault. Can we say now that it was more the person on the box than the person in the car?
No. Steve has done a great job helping Jr. return to competitive status.
Do you think its realistic to expect that Iowa will be on the schedule within the next few years? We need more short tracks.
I think it's a great track fake Tom Cruise, but it's not that simple. Politics gets involved. Some track has to lose a race for Iowa to get a Cup date. No one wants to give up a Cup dat and ISC is giving one of it dates to a track it doesn't own. Neither is Bruton Smith at SMI. The best answer to me is take one race from Dover (which isn't owned by ISC or SMI) and give it to Iowa.
do u think logano will win one before the end of the year .
No I don't, but almost anyone can win at Dega if they are in the right place at the end.
Afternoon Terry, In answer to your questions: 1. Instead of an elimination process, I think a separate point system as Kyle suggested is in order. 2. Matt has been a loyal soldier for Roush and deserves to end the season in the ride.
KyBu's system has some merit, but I've done the math on separate systems for the Chase and it really doesn't make things closer most of the time. An elim system that I suggested would assure fans that four guys raced for the title at the end. As for Matt leaving early, as I wrote, it only works with the other teams play along. Joey goes to Penske along with Matt leaving Roush for JGR. But I think Jack wants Ricky to concentrate on trying to win the NW title.
Of the current Nationwide drivers who would be your pick to most likely win a cup race next year.
Stenhouse, obviously, since he'll have a great car and team in the 17.
Since Kyle still owes #2 payback for Watkins Glen is it better to get even at Dega or wait for Martinsville?
Not happening Dave. These guys are pros. Kyle's not going to deleiberately take out a guy racing for the championship. And if he did, a big NASCAR penalty is coming.
Why not say the driver in the chase who wins the most chase races is the Champion and have a supplemental points system in case of a tie
Because as much as I believe winning is the most important thing, I also believe consistent has it's place. What is a driver wins twice in the Chase and no one else wins more than once, but the guy who won twice also finished 30th in the other eight races?
What's this week's assignment? Are you going to NASCAR's equivalent to a casino or is this Hinton territory?
Easy Ed is in Dega this weekend. My Chase races at KC and Texas. I'm also covering the NHRA finale in Pomona and the F1 race in Austin.
Jeff Gordon has 2 top 5s in 3 chase races and it should be 3. Do u think the Chase point system needs tweaking to lessen the punishment for a poor finish?
Yes I do. No points for anyone who finished worse than 20th, based on a 25-point max system with bonus points.
hey terry are you going to party in the infield this weekand at telladega this weekand or just work in the media center LOL....
The Dega infield can be a scary place. Actually, that's a bit of a stereotype now. It's much calmer than years ago. And there's a lot of folks just out there having fun and cooking some good Southern grubb. But I have seen some funny things there. One year I was leaving and a big dog was on the hood of a guy's truck. As I got closer, I noticed the dog wasn't moving. That's because he was dead. The guy had his dog stuffed.
Wow, your chase point change is a great idea.
Well, that's two of us that think so. Only 10 million others to convince.
Hi Terry: Since you picked the #48 to win, I will get back to work now! Thanks!
Molly, take off that 48 hat and stop trying to vacuum up my tiny dog.
Why exactly did Hendrick let Kesolowski go? I remember him running very well for JRM.
Simple. No place to put him.
Is Mark in the 55 or is up for grabs Vickers A J ?
That situation will remain similar to what it is now for next year.
"Dega highway 22 can be a scary / funny place after the race. Only time I've ever seen kegs in the back of a pickup truck, lawn chairs and the Alabama State Patrol driving next to them and not giving tickets. We used it as a teaching moment for the underage nieces/nephew on what NOT to do.
Ha. Lots of "teaching moments" at Dega, like guys drinking a cold Bud at 6 am. My fave is the riding ice chests with a motor on them. I even saw one with a headlight.
so whats you take in the indy car series schedule for 2013 and there is like 3 double headers on the roadcorse for dertoit, houston, toronto you take on that.....
Good question Scott. I find in interesting that so many IndyCar folks complained aboutt the doubleheader format at Texas and now they have it for three street events. I'm not against it, but I think they did it so they could say they have 19 events when they really have 16.
Terry, Denny Hamlin is a polite, Southern, gentleman, Virginian and a great racer but he doesn't get much respect from some fans. Why is that?
I think he gets tons of respect and he has a large fan base. He also has matured a lot this year with how he reacts to adversity. Maybe the fact that he's about to become a father for the first time is helping that.
Hi Terry, should of the 2013 IndyCar schedule had more ovals? The DW12 has produced stunning oval racing this year.
I'm all for more ovals, but the trend is moving away from that to more road and street course. Frankly, I think it's a mistake. But I'm happy Texas and Cali are back on the sked. There were a lot of doubts about TMS returning.
Call me crazy but I wanted to see Kurt Busch working for Stewart-Haas racing in the 39.
OK BK, you're crazy. Just kidding. Smoke and Kurt on the same team would be fun to watch.
Do you expect Kurt Busch to run fast out of the gate in the Furniture Row #78 and maybe score a top 5 or even win?
I'd be shocked if he won. But he could post a top-5 somewhere if he gets a break. But that isn't a team capable of running top-5 most of the time no matter who is driving.
What is causing Kyle's motors to blow? Is he driving them too hard or are the ones he keeps getting just poorly built?
That's an interesting question that I posed earlier this year Justin. It's very odd that Kyle kept having engines woes when his teammates didn't.
When do you think we'll see RCR turn things around with the Cup program? I keep waiting for signs?
Not this year, unless Harv wins at Dega. But they have some work to do in the offseason to get back up as true title contenders.
With Jeff Burton only having one season left on his contract for next year and Kurt Busch having a one year deal with FRR, will we hear the rumors again of Kurt replacing Jeff in the 31 next year?
Yes, but that ride might be reserved for Austin Dillon.
I agree Terry, Randy Bernard is a realist, I would love more ovals, but they struggle to make money for IndyCar. At least IndyCar should race at wider road courses, ditching the follow-the-leader parades at Mid-Ohio and Sonoma would be a start. Add Road America and Portland
I'd love to see IndyCar return to Vancouver. It's a street race without a lot of passing, but a great city and always a fun weekend when it was there.
RCR's last Championship was in 1994. Do you think they will even win another or is that company gonna be another RPM?
RCR is miles ahead of RPM. And I think Childress will win more championships in the future. I think both Dillon boys are the real deal and will compete for titles a few years from now.
is there sabotage involved with the 17
All right. Our first conspiracy-theory post. But no, there isn't.
what is the latest on rpm deals with ford and their drivers for next year?
They will re-up with Ford. No other options, really. Ambrose will be back. Almirola's situation is still up in the air.
I'm out folks. Very feisty chat today. Awesome. Have a great week and enjoy dangerous Dega, but don't stuff your dog. Peace.
