What's happening guys? Friday night fights going down in Minny. Dennis Hallman is out and shrouded in mysteriousness. Jeremy Stephens is in the clink. Yves Edwards is wondering what voodoo is behind it all. In other words, the UFC circus is just as it should be! Let's get this thing rolling...
Chuck, are veterans like Pierce and Simpson being punished for being "boring" grinders by having the lowest billing on the card?
You know, I sort of think so. Pierce is a sturdy, tough dude. He lost to Hendricks by split decision. Same with Koscheck. Simpson has won four of five. They've both been around and pretty successful to end up in a quiet faceoff.
What are some of your favorite restaurants?
Straight out the gate, we are talking about food. Alright...Casa Bonita, in Denver, is the best. Has it all. Theatrics. Neon lights. Black Bart's cave. Wishing wells. Mariachi's. Sopapillas. A penny-flattening machine. Fortune tellers. Plus entertainment.
Any word on Hallman? This is just bizarre
No, haven't heard anything more on it. Guess it was as amicable as can be for a fighter to miss weight and get cut. Sounds like one of those handshakes and pats on the back ordeals.
Hey Chuck, was hoping to get your take on Nick Diaz. I think he could be the UFC's welterweight champion if he gets the shot (and can stay clean). Your thoughts?
I like him a lot, and was excited to see him fight GSP. Then that fell through. I'd still like to see him fight GSP, but now the queue has gotten longer. Diaz against any of those guys at the top of 170 is fun (Hendricks, Kampmann, Koscheck, Ellenberger).
Wouldn't Bones beat SIlva pretty badly/easily? I understand the desire for a superfight, but Bones-Dos Santos is much more competitive than Bones-Silva.
That's why they fight, to answer the question. But do I agree with that? Yes, I think Bones would would beat Silva. They are closer in size, and both guys have been unbeatable in their divisions...which makes for an interesting case to turn them on each other. But Jones' wrestling would be the difference.
Seems like the World Series of Fighting is doing a pretty good job of assembling talent. Are they going to stick around, or is this a one off?
They have done a great job of picking up still vital former UFC guys (and intrigue guys like Tyrone Sprong) and sticking them on a card. I think the WSOF has a model to treat the fighters right, and see how it goes. I was told they would do 10 cards, or that's the plan. NBC Sports is seeing how this first one goes, just like everyone else, but not bad. Not bad.
Any word on Diego Sanchez??
He tweeted yesterday that he himself didn't have a clue, Jenn. Guess he's training again, so that means we might hear some news on a possible opponent soon enough.
Ground Chuck! I know you will be inclined to skip over this question because, hey, who cares right? But do you think there is a situation where Randy Couture could fight again? Maybe vs. Fedor?
Nah, man...that dude's like 59 years old (in actuality, 49). His son Ryan is not a cage vet. Can't see him returning. But Fedor/Lesnar? I keep my bit of delusion/optimism alive for that.
Chuck, no MMA Live last night? Was wondering what happens to Bigfoot if he looses to Big Browne? Think the UFC cuts him?
Unfortunately, MMA Live is on a hiatus until January 2013. We'll still be doing the MMA Live Extra hits and have coverage at the events. I don't think that Bigfoot gets cut if he loses because A) there's only maybe 25 active heavyweights on the UFC's roster and B) the first two guys he lost to (Cormier, Velasquez) are understandable.
What is your fighting weight, and what do you walk around at.
I walk around at 200. I run around at that weight too. That's pretty much my nonfluctuating weight. BUT, if I had to fight, I'd be at 185. Could do that wringing out some water, right?
What word you most regularly apply toward cage fighters: A) Weird B) Funny C) Angry D) Smart E) Crazy
Out of those five...will go with smart. A lot of those cats are brighter than we give them credit for. (Weird is close second).
Best writer in the business, how the hell are ya Chuck? FREE the HEATHEN! Bizzare story.
Very strange. And that he's still slated to fight tonight is even more bizarre. But imagine Yves Edwards...waiting to find out if he's fighting or not. Remember: Edwards has an unhealthy fear of zombies. That's an active imagination working overtime right now.
Pierce and Simpson are both guys trying to establish a foothold in the division, too. Guys like that, esp in a division like WW, aren't sniffing the main card unless they're blood & guts brawlers.
It is a stacked division. No doubt. But Pierce's hard noggin should get some credit.
Happy Friday Chuck. Do you think people are too high on glover texiera too soon. People think hes ready for Rashad? I'm not sold.
That's sort of the dawning aspect on UFC 153..."hey wait, why are we glorifying Glover Teixeira, who has one UFC fight?" He beat Kyle Kingsbury, and he did it emphatically. So did Stephan Bonnar. Why do we love Teixeira? I think because he lived up to billing first time out, and he'd been running through opponents beforehand. I still need to see him beat a good name before I get overly excited, but I do think he's merits watching.
I once studied abroad for a whole summer. Her name was Rita.
Is this Jussier? Or Antonio? Or Joe? Or Wanderlei? Or Anderson?
Do u think Dana gives Mitrione the Gonzaga fight since he is asking for it ?? Or does Gonzaga get a different opponent & who ??
Jim, I have no earthly idea. I just know that they'd better get Daniel Cormier an opponent, and fast...Nov. 3 is rolling up quick. Mitrione/Gonzaga sounds fun to me. Why not?
How would you see that rumored Machida/Henderson match playing out?
That one is very difficult to imagine, honestly. I know that Hendo likes to wade in there and engage, sometimes incautiously, and he trusts that chin, but Machida is so evasive...and he can counter like nobody else out there. Think Hendo would have to use some smarts. Leaning towards Machida...
What have I missed regarding J. Stephens/edwards and also Hallman?
Stephens is in jail for an out of state warrant, and Hallman missed weight yesterday, and was subsequently (semi-gracefully) cut. His fight is off with Tavares.
How about Struve for Cormier ?
A lot of people bringing that up. I wouldn't mind seeing that at all. But I don't know if Struve would be ready for the quick turnaround. If they are dangling Mitrione at Cormier, it could be anybody at this point.
Who would you like to see Cormier fight next?
Werdum. He's available, and he's in that top six or so.
Glover Teixeira beat Kyle Kingsbury who beat Fabio Maldinado who is now fighting Glover Teixeira in a PPV being headlined by Stephan Bonnar. Got it?
These dawgs are chasing their own tails. Funny how these round robin things work.
Gonzaga is left with out an opponent, any chance he fights Cormier?
I think the UFC nixed that idea right off. Not sure why. Sean Shelby needs to get Cormier and opponent already. (I am sure he appreciates me taking that tone).
Hey Big Bro, don't forget to pick me up at the YMCA before you head home to watch the fights! I got my allowance on Bigfoot!
You got it squirt. How was the karate class?
Can you imagine a UFC that matches up Yves Edwars with Tavares tonight?
Hmm....interesting. Both lightweights. Why, that's just mad enough to work.
tough game for the broncos this weekend. Does Payton get it done?
Coleman, I have my doubts. There are factors, though. Last year, Brady threw for six TDs against the Broncos. That's why they signed Tracy Porter and some new secondary. Before last season, the Broncos were the only team to have the Pats number in the aughts. They were 6-2. Manning has done better against Brady since 2007. I am optimistic, but only because I'm going and need to feel that way.
Are we gonna see McDonald vs Barao while Cruz is still on the shelf ? Or does Baroa wait to unify that belt ?
I would like to see McDonald/Barao, and I know McDonald's camp was lobbying for a December fight. Still no word on what's happening there. Cruz's timetable for the ACL recovery still seems like it's going to go into late first quarter of 2013...
Dude, i've told you about texting and driving.
Is there a surveillance camera on me, JA? Wait...this can't be Anik. He's in Minny gearing up for tonight's call.
Picks for todays FX card chuck?
I am going Browne, Ellenberger, Dodson, Michael Johnson and Joshua Neer.
Edwards vs Stephens is cancelled
There you go.
Chuck, the Dec. 8 fox card is looking real good while the 153 pay per view does not quite stack up, yet.......
Ken, these cards have a way of glowing from way out, but as we get closer, and guys get hurt, get busted for one thing or another, don't make weight, etc, they end up far different. How's that for pessimism? I am hoping that Seattle card stays intact. It's a good one.
FON for tonight's card? Would love for it to be Dodson v da Silva to quell all the "flyweights are weak" crowd.
Yup, me too. I have yet to see a boring Dodson fight. He's all over the cage. Should be a good one with da Silva (AKA Formiga).
Theoretically, if Urijah Faber did fight Michael Bisping, what chance would you give the pipsqueak?
Why would you refer to Bisping as a pipsqueak?
You think after my boy John Dodson does work tonight that people will still be bad-mouthing the little guys at 125?
Just answered a similar question to this, Rich, but no...not necessarily. A lot of people just aren't into watching the little dudes fight.
I'm a big Joe Lauzon fan. Any chance he beats Maynard?
Lauzon always shows up just when everybody sleeps on him. This is one of those fights. But, I do think Gray Maynard is a lot headier than Melvin Guillard. I can't see him being lulled into the types of mistakes that Lauzon pounces on.
So you picked michael johnson over Danny castilol, but do you think its a good bet at -170? or do you think that one could be pretty tight?
I know if you talk to Brett Okamoto, you'll walk away thinking Johnson not only beats Danny Castillo, but any chump who stands in his way. I do like Johnson....not sure I'd consider it a lock. Castillo brings it every time.
Would you putty Might Mouse on your pound 4 pound?
Some of the ESPN panel had him on there, and I can see why. He beat Benavidez, and I had Joe on there at No. 10 beforehand. I still have Mighty Mouse just outside of it, but he's made me a believer these last few fights.
I got a jump rope. That thing's just a rope, man. You gotta make the jump happen.
Who do you think the UFC will give Clay Guida for his first fight at 145 ?
Would love to see Dustin Poirier or the Korean Zombie. Either of those fights would find me tuning in. But...a dark horse might be Nik Lentz. We don't talk about him much, but he's better suited for 145 and will make some waves there.
What's up with Cowboy and Pettis? Any word on when they are going to fight? I am looking forward to that one.
I spoke to Cowboy a couple of days ago, and he said he hopes the fight goes down in either December or January. My guess is January, since DEC is getting booked up already. It's possible they could stick the fight on the DEC 29 card.
Werdum/Cormier is a co-main of a UFC, not a Strikeforce. Feed Cormier someone like Tim Sylvia and be done with it. Cormier/Overeem for next year's TUF would make better sense.
Back to Sylvia again. I guess if we need a warm body to show up in OKC, he's a good one. Sylvia had his heart broken the first time when he was given the fight (and then had it taken away).
Ninja is all over Johnson. (He also gave us St. Louis +2 yesterday).
Dude always has one eye on the sportsbook. He knows what he's talking about.
Will the UFC ever again fall for the gimmickity of a tournament?
Well, never say never. They essentially did that with the flyweights. And they are semi-sort-of doing it with the welterweights out there in Montreal. But, as far as an eight-tiered thing like what went on with the Strikeforce grand prix? No sir, Medium Nog.
To Medium Nog - It's called TUF
In light of boxer Orlando Cruz announcing his is a homosexual the other day, do you think that opens the combat sports door for MMA's first one to come out or do you think because of the grappling aspect in MMA that fighters will be fearful?
What about Liz Carmouche? I assume you mean men fighter....and I would hope that it wouldn't be a big deal, but there are instances of homophobia in this sport, so who knows what the repercussions would be. You'd like to think it wouldn't play a factor.
$250 on your 5 guys. Looking for a $1155 payout later or I am looking for you!
If it hits, count me in for a 50/50 split. If it doesn't, of course, then tough luck man.
My theory is that the UFC does't want Cormier and Werdum to beat one another unless it is a UFC card. Your thoughts?
Could be. Werdum has been hovering in a sort of strange top ten space, where not a lot of people consider him an elite heavy. But he is. And maybe the UFC sees him that way, too. Pat Barry/Cormier is fine with me.
Hieron looks to be in very good shape, he and Ellenberger could put on quite a show, fight of the night??
Yeah, this could be it. Hieron and all his travails, against Ellenberger coming off a loss...and both of them having been pushed back by a month by the UFC 151 debacle. Lot of pent up frustration could play out.
True or false: there was a point in the 2006-2008 area where at least 40 percent of UFC fighters had the name "Silva" or "Thiago" as part of their name?
I will say...false. But narrowly. There are a lot of Thiago's and a lot of Silva's, and there's even a Thiago Silva.
Chuck, glad to see you chatting. What chances do you give Jay Heiron tonight?
If he can survive the first round, I think he could wear down Ellenberger. Heiron's been around the block, and he knows what Ellenberger likes to do (which is knock guys unconscious early). Will be interesting to see if he'll trade early.
Would the UFC consider rematching Travis Brown against Stefan Struve if Brown can beats Silva tonite? I would like to see them play it back, and timing would be right.
It's possible. It depends on where the UFC sees Struve stacking up in the division, but honestly, with Browne undefeated (and coming off a win over Bigfoot), and Struve with a head of momentum, and with the timing meshed...could happen.
chuck - Why not Pat Barry vs Cormier?...Pat needs the work and is tired of eating ketchup and crackers at the local diner...
I'm down for it, Chuck II. Barry will get in there and scrap, even if he comes out on the bad end. Cormier needs somebody. Barry does in a pinch.
what is the best post fight celebration youve seen?
Got to be Aldo's UFC 142 celebration when he disappeared into the sea of his countrymen. The look an Reed Harris's face as he tried to sort out the chaos...top shelf entertainment.
Before you dismiss this question as from a casual fan, give it a chance. I think Kevin Ferguson got a raw deal from UFC. The Roy Nelson fight was exhibition. He beat Houston Alexander. And then they cut him after one loss to Mitrione, who he slammed twice? Come on Brah!
Here we go. Kimbo did it the right way. He went through TUF. He never looked as good as he did in he alleyways of Miami, though. Those four ounces on his hands felt like a million pounds. Poor Kimbo.
Dennis (MI) - Brock after winning UFC 100 saying he will drink the non-sponsered beer and go home and jump on his wife
While foaming rabidly from the mouth. That was alarming (but a cheersable offense).
Good stuff as usual Chuck. Shout out to my Orioles tonight. Go Birds
What happened with Dennis Hallman? This reminds me of the Nate Marquardt situation with all the secrets surrounding it.
Come to think of it, there are some "secretive" similarities in play. Difference was that Marquardt was the headliner in Pittsburgh, where Hallman was further down the card. But, they both carried their ominous airs, for sure.
Listen Chuck, GSP's reign is coming to an end, Brah. The problem with that is, he will leave behind the least populace or exciting group of fighters in one division in the history of fighting.
Jose Aldo's back flip off the top of the octagon was a good celebration too.........
And Forrest Griffin's hot disbelief lap after taping Shogun was fun.
Hey Chuck, you know who got a bum deal: Rameau Thierry Sokojou. The guy is an accomplished judoka, is exciting to watch and can really fight. You are telling me you don't like him? Are you serious!
I like him. Used to hang out at Team Quest and saw him training back when he was first in the UFC. What's crazy is that Sokoudjou is the reason for the UFC 151 cancellation....at least in the "butterfly effect" kind of way. He hurt Hendo's knee. That was the catalyst for a big fallout.
Who ya got in this here beisbol game today? I like the Bravos.
Charles, who was the most talented pre-2000 mixed martial artist in your worldview? I say its Frank Shamrock and if you say I'm wrong, we are going to have a problem.
Wasn't Brad Gumm fighting back then? Going with Gumm. That win against Dario Valdez at the Rutten Invitation will live forever.
Broncos in Foxboro this weekend. You like the upset here?
I like the idea of the upset, but I need to see it play out with my own ideas to believe it.
Who do you got winning the Roy Nelson vs Carwin match..i have Nelson by Sub if it goes more than 1 round
I wouldn't sleep on Nelson here...especially with the question marks surrounding Carwin. Carwin delivers a punch; Nelson takes a punch (better than about anybody). But I still think Carwin will win.
whats your take on the upside of Jimi Manuwa as a UFC light-heavyweight? I know he sort of looked like he was gassing and got taken down fairly easy by Kingsbury....but my god does he throw his strikes with evil intentions
He looked good, I thought. Looking forward to seeing more of him going forward. Dude has some heavy hands. I think we'll see them next time out.
Been reading about Silva not wanting to go up to 205 pounds. Is it me, or does this seem strange? This will be his third fight at 205, and each time it was against guys he knew he could beat (Irvin, Griffin and now Bonnar). Whenever a name like "Jones" is brought up, he's "never leaving 185." A little selective, no?
Yes, a little selective. And clever. Back when he fought Irvin, it was a cobbled together card to offset an Affliction show. Silva hopped on with Irvin as the prey. The Griffin fight was more legit, but again, it was against a guy his camp had to be reasonably sure he matched up with. Bonnar is closer to Irvin than Griffin. All these cameos are just that. But I do think he'd rather avoid Jones.
I'm glad the UFC is back here in MN tonight, next time any chance theyll bless us with some great fights? MN is a underrated MMA hotbed
You never know with these types of cards. Sometimes they end up far better than people thing. There are some good looking fights on here tonight (Castillo/Johnson, Formiga/Dodson, Silva/Browne, Ellenberger/Heiron), so I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being entertaining.
if and when gsp defeats the natural born strategist? when do you see the gsp vs silva taking place????
You are presuming that Silva gets by Bonnar? Smart presumption. I would guess February would be the soonest it could happen, but honestly, with GSP talking about adding weight/muscle and all that, wouldn't be surprised if that were closer to April or May.
Alright guys. I gots to split and get ready for these fights. Let's do it again next week, and if I didn't get to your question, hit me on Twitter, @ChuckMindenhall.
