Auto update turned on and ready to roll. Let's get right to it.
Who was the most recent driver to burst on the scene like Brad K has? I have been very impressed how good he has gotten in such a short time. Do you think he is for real?
Hmmm. A driver that good, you probably have go to back to Kyle Busch. Only folks expected Kyle to be good right off the bad. Not so sure they expected it from Brad K. Not that he came out of nowwhere, but in a way he did. He's been great for the sport.
How is the racing going to be this weekend? Will they actually be able to race, or do they overheat to easily and have to wait for the last 10 laps?
Probably not much different than it was in the spring. They'll be able to race. The question is, how many of the Chasers will ride around at the back to avoid trouble. I like what Brad K says about that. Check out his comments in my column. I think you'll appreciate them. http://es.pn/Uich2E
I won't lie. I don't like Kyle. I respect him as a driver though. That being said, how much longer till the sponsors tire of his act? Kinda like Kurt?
He's a long way, I believe, from getting to where Kurt is. I really had been impressed with how he handled missing the Chase. Maybe what happened Sunday was all that frustration coming to a head. But you want your driver to be passionate, so you have to appreciate that. Sponsors do.
Do you think KBM will eventually have to field cars for both Busch kids? Owners and sponsors are not going to put up with them forever.
Not for a while at least. Kyle is finding out it isn't easy being an owner. Remember when they talked about winning every NW race this year. Hasn't been close. Kyle is winless in that series. But I could see Monster Energy moving to Cup with Kyle one day. Just not sure it will be his own team.
It sounded from Denny's comments that JGR made a conscious decision to sacrifice fuel savings for HP. And certainly the cars performed that way. Are we just seeing a momentary meltdown from Kyle or does this bring up the question of whether or not he will resign with any Toyota team?
You read correctly. That is why Kyle's comments were out of line. They do make you wonder if he'll be in a hurry to re-sign even though J.D. Gibbs tells me he believes Kyle wants to be back and will be back after 2013. There also are rumors -- nothing more, mind you -- that SHR could be a player in 2014.
Once again we see Roush starting out well only to plateau. It seems that is take Roush longer to come up to speed after a rule change (e.g. recent bushing rule). Is this indicative of Jack's style of management. This pattern has occurred going back to at least the COT
There wasn't a rule change. There was just a reminder not to push the limits any further than they have been pushed. What's puzzing is Roush told me before the Chase opener they had their best cars and a few things up their sleeves that should potentially make them better than the Hendrick cars. For some reason whatever they have done hasn't worked. It happens.
Do you think Kyle Busch is going to leave JGR after next season.
Not really, but I didn't think Matt Kenseth would leave Roush. So what do I know?
Do you think there is a legit chance that Kyle won't re-sign with Gibbs? If so, do you think SHR would be an option or would he bring up KBM?
There is a legit chance, although I say unlikely. And SHR would be the target from what I hear.
Wouldn't you say RCR is an overrated team? No cup titles since 1994. Since Dale dies they really haven't been a title contender besides a few odd years from Harvick
Harvick was a contender the past two years until the final race. And Jeff Burton led the standings with five to go a few years ago. Look, it's not easy winning titles in NASCAR, which makes what Hendrick has done all the more impressive. You could say RCR is overrated like you have, but then you'd have to call out a few other organizations as well.
Kyle has all the talent in the world but is not mentally strong. I honestly expetc him to just flip out on the track and start wrecking people on purpose (ala texas last year)
Newt, I am really disappointed in Chevy not releasing their 2013 car while the other makes have, and truth be told the longer they wait the more I lose interest. Any chance we see the car before Charlotte?
I believe all the manufacturers were represented at Talladega on Wednesday. Kasey Kahne drove the new car for HMS.
Just read your article on expected apology and White confirming they chose HP over fuel economy. Thanks for confirming why the JGR cars were so fast at Dover
Dover was a tough watch for me. 100 laps in and 7 cars on the lead lap. Hopefully dega will be more exciting. the top 3 will probably play it safe while the other 9 will be looking to race hard to get back in this. who sitting 4th-9th is your best bet coming out of dega being back in the hunt?
It was tough for a lot of people. Be thankful it wasn't a 500-miler like it has been in the past. Having said that, I was on the edge of my seat at the end wondering if Brad K would run out of gas.
Where do you see Regan Smith in 2013? RPM? Front Row? JRM?
Hearing he could go in the No. 51 at Phoenix Racing.
I know Roush is down as a whole, but as a kenseth fan, I've been extremely disappointed with how matt's last hurrah in the 17 has gone. Falling behind performance wise is one thing, but cars that literally fall apart is another. I find it very, very suspicious. Not saying it is a conspiracy, but it is extremely odd, right?
Listen, Jack Roush has more respect for Matt Kenseth than almost anybody in the sport, so I don't see him or that organization sabotaging the car because he's leaving. It is sad, though, the last hurrah couldn't have been as a contender.
Were you covering the Nascar the Game event @ Charlotte? I heard the game froze part way through. Did Ed Martin give an explanation?
I was there. And it did freeze up or something at the very start, but then all was OK.
How did brad k go from 2 top 10s in his full season to penske to leading the points two years later?
First, they surrounded him with better people and equipment. Secondly, it takes time to build chemistry. Brad and Paul Wolfe have done it faster than most. Shows just how talented both are.
Who would have though Brad K would have been better than Joey L, considering they virtually came out of the same class? Especially with the hype Logano had.
Brad is a lot older and more seasoned than Joey, so I'm not surprised at all.
Do you see a team such as RCR, that hasn't had the speed this year, pouring all their resources into the new car of 2013 and getting a head start?
Might be time for that.
If Danica gets the 39 CC and pit crew who will be the new CC for Newman and do you think Eury JR. will ever be a CC again?
First, I believe the 39 cc and crew going to Danica is a done deal. Just ready Tony Gibson's comments in my story on Saturday. As for Newman, I honestly don't know. Probably somebody with more of an engineering background. As for Eury Jr., might be tough. Might have to work his way back up through the NW series. Having said that, I believe Eury Jr is a good crew chief.
How happy is Miller Brewing now that Shell wanted Kurt Busch, moving Brad over to the 2 car? And how bummed is Shell?
Miller loves Brad K, but then Kurt did a lot of good things for that sponsor as well. Shell? Who wouldn't want Brad now. Unfortunately, they don't have the benefit of hindsight.
MR NEWTON! I HATE THE 4th Chase Race. You are ecstatic your driver make the chase. The Chases begin in Chicagoland with the illusion of your driver raising the CUP at Homestead. You root and have agonized for 26 races to make the Chase. And then you arrive at DEGA, with your driver sitging in the bottom 5 and then IT JUST STOPS. It breaks your heart. You are left to look forward to next year and begin your next year illusion of your favorite driver raising the CUP as a Champion. I HATE THIS 4th RACE!
I love Dega in the Chase. I wish they'd open the Chase at Daytona and have two plate races. I think most fans would agree. Jimmie Johnson told me as a fan he would want Dega in the Chase too.
Chevy still has not unveiled the full car. They are masking the car with the black and white. No real detail could be seen at Dega
Gives you something to look forward to, but bet it is pretty close to the real deal. No need testing anything else this late in the year.
so another week goes by and another kyle meltdown. when is kyle going to stop blaming everyone else and take some blame himself for his season?
Trust me, I believe he is sorry he did it this time.
Keselowski's season is reminiscent of Newman's 2003, with the bundle of wins, several fuel mileage wins. Do you think Penske's move to Ford will put their performance in reverse? Nine years newman was the next big thing, and Penske's equipment began to hold him back
I actually see Penske growing stronger with Roush Yates engines. The engineers Penske sends to that department will only make the program stronger.
Great article Newt! With the remaining schedule for the Chase, is Martinsville the only weakness that Keselowski has left?
I haven't looked up his Martinsville stats, but when a driver is on a roll usually his worst tracks turn out good. It happened at Dover. Brad K didn't have a top 10 there before Sunday.
How could Smith go to the 51? Rumor says it is closing shop
The owner and general manager say otherwise.
When do Sprint Cup team usually unvail paint scheme for the next year? Do you think SHR will unvail Danica godaddy.com paint scheme when Nascar goes to PIR?
It all depends. Most sometime in January. Many do around the media tour late in the month.
Kyle ran limited nationwide races this year and has run (1? 2?) truck races this year. Has he been agitated by the restrictions Gibbs has placed on him?
No, he's more agitated by not being in the Chase and having a chance to run for the title.
Hey Newt, enoy the chats. Who are some possible free agents after the 2013 season?Kyle? Kurt? Jeff Burton? ANyone else?
Thanks. Those are three big ones. Newman has only a one-year deal next year. Vickers will be looking. There are a couple more but my brain isn't clicking on all cyliders at the moment.
Any word on why coach is taking his time working on an extension with kyle?
He's not taking his time as much as Kyle is taking his time. Gibbs wants it done, as J.D. said, sooner rather than later.
And these deals often are much more complicated than we think because sponsors and appearances and things like that have to be matched up.
How long did the 2013 cars stay hooked up drafting?
Not very long. Kasey Kahne said the handling goes away fast.
Since Casino Le Dega is part of the Chase, any rumors of a roadcourse sneaking in there in 2014/2015? Only makes sense if they got a plate track in there, need to have a couple rights in there too. What say you? Thanks
Gosh I hope so. I've been pushing for that for years, but NASCAR says since there are only two during the regular season it wouldn't be representative of the season. I say it would be great to determine the best overall driver.
Your top three driver's nicknames?
Rowdy. Jaws, Silver Fox.
20% of the Chase as a pack-draft/tandem crapshoot. Please. God. No. What do you think of MWRs chances this weekend?
Pretty good. Bowyer is one of the best on plate races today.
Where is Matt Borland these days? Could we see him and Newman reunited? They had a lot of success together in that 12 car.
He's at SHR working behind the scenes. Thought of him as a potential candidate for Newman since they were together at Penske Racing. But not sure Borland wants to go back to being a crew chief.
Newt, how would you rate Kahne's chances in the chase right now? Do you see any wins for him coming up? Thanks
Not bad. I can see him going on a tear in the final five races if he survives and has a top 10 at Dega. He's had one of the fastest Hendrick cars, fastest Sprint Cup cars, the entire season. Charlotte definitely is a potential win for him. Kansas and Homestead, too.
So what does Keslowski's sister do other than "keep him happy"? Does she work for BK Racing? You failed to mention that in your article.
She is working to give new insight into what they're doing. She doesn't have a title yet. She told me to suggest one, and so far I haven't come up with any. I'd call her more of a consultant right now.
Ryan McGee yelled at me during the last week's chat race when I recommended two plate races in the chase. He said NO NO NO NO, NO gimick races in the chase.
What does he know? Kidding. Ryan is a bright guy. But when myself, Nate Ryan of USA Today and David Caraviello of NASCAR.com made a dream Chase schedule at the bar in Kanwas we were unanimous on opening at Daytona and having Dega in the mix as well. We added Montreal, too. NASCAR should listen to us.
With all this talk of the Chase, we have been comparing NASCAR to other major sports and their playoffs. To compare Talladega to football, should football teams play roulette in the divisional round to see who make the Conference Championship games?
Wasn't that West Virginia-Baylor game like roulette? When you have two teams in the top 25 going 70-63, that tells me there is a deleted pool of at least defensive talent in college football.
is there any word on where david regan will be at next year since that kurt bush will drive for the #78 car next weekand and beyond you thoughts on that thanks....
No word yet. Heard Regan Smith possibly in the 51 but no new word on David Ragan.
Since road courses represent 1/18 of the season, maybe they should do a race that starts out of the Dega Roadcourse and 8/10 into the race switches to the oval
Wouldn't that kill the Redneck Blvd.?
With some of Sam Hornish's comments. he seems quite bitter about being passed over for Dinger and now J-Lo, do you think he's out at Penske altogether? Would he fit in with Petty in the 43?
Not sure bitter as much as disappointment. He really felt his performance should have gotten him a shot in the 22. Unfortunately, Brad K seemed to feel more comfortable with Joey as a teammate. Hopefully, Penske can get a third car together part-time or fulltime next year, and fulltime definitely by 2014. I'd like to see Sam get another shot.
You rank "Rowdy" as one of the top 3 driver nicknames? A nickname hardly counts if the DRIVER GIVES IT TO HIMSELF. Also, what about "The King" and "The Intimidator"?
Wondered how long it would take to see if somebody noticed I left out Earnhardt and Petty. They're all great nicknames. I am partial to the Silver Fox because I grew up a Pearson fan. You're right, though, The King and Intimidator deserve to be there. Now I'm going ot hear from Smoke fans.
Hi Newt, what are the chances Adam Stevens follows JoLo to Penske, 7 wins in a part time schedule is awsome.
Not sure about his contractural status at JGR, so can't say.
As much as I liked last years chase, I am getting sick of only 2 or 3 drivers trully being in it every year. They need to do the 1-12 point system for chase drivers.
I am almost with you on that one. But it's not the same two or three. Last year it was Edwards and Harvick down the stretch with Stewart. The year before it was Hamlin and Harvick with Johnson. But I would like to see a system that doesn't penalize a poor finish so much.
Will the Chaser hang back until the near end and then attack? What say you Mr. Newton?
Some will. Some will not. I like the chances of those that go for it. Read Brad K's comments in my column.
Liked the article Newt, gave me a different light on Keselowski. Do you think it's time for Cup to redo the Chase? Four 1.5 mile tracks, way too many! I think Talladega, Daytona, Montreal, Chicago, Martinsville, Charlotte, Phoenix, Iowa, Dover and Homestead would be the perfect races for the Chase; do you agree?
Thanks. I like all you have but Chicago. Why not toss Bristol in there? Looks like you left Texas out of your final 10 like I did in my dream Chase lineup made at the Kansas bar. Eddie Gossage will not like that.
how many years will logano get at pemske to prove himself
I'd say at least two, probably threee.
Newt, what's the status with Elliott Sadler and Brian Vickers nationwide/cup plans for next year? Thanks
Elliott will drive one JGR NW car with OneMain Financial as the sponsor, and a part-time Cup schedule. Vickers will drive the other NW car and likely fill in the blanks for Martin Martin at MWR in the 55. They haven't announced it yet, but I was told that is a strong possibility.
I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but Penske seemed like it saved some of its latest and greatest stuff for the Chase. Brad K ran brand new cars that had never been raced at Chicago and New Hampshire and he's running a 3rd brand new car at Talladega this weekend. Do you think tha's part of their success?
What they did on Sunday was start saving fuel well before anybody else. Brad K could afford to do that because he wasn't racing for the win at the time. Johnson had to race Kyle hard for a while, and Hamlin was in the same boat. It was the perfect storm for Brad K in the end.
I saw in the chat yesterday that BK Racing is apparently interested in bringing AJ over next season, replacing either Cassill or Kvapil. Have you heard anything about that?
Do you think Brad, Jimmie, and Denny will play it safe at Talladega? Do you see any one of those three just throwing caution to the wind and going all out to try and get the win?
Brad K already has said he won't ride around the back. Jimmie has a history of that, but it hasn't worked out so well so maybe -- hopefully -- he will change up. Denny I'm not sure. I do look for the Gordons and Kahnes and Earnhardts and those that have the most to gain to go for it.
Is there any possibility that we'll see Regan Smith drop down to the Nationwide Series next year? If I were him, I think I'd rather be in a competitive Nationwide ride and win races than to be in a second-rate Cup ride and run 20th-30th every week.
Maybe at JR Motorsports. That program could use a driver like him.
Have any teams ever experimented with an air wrench designed to hit of the lugs at once? Is there a rule against something like that? My initial thoughts were - too hard to design, and not much to gain in shaving time off tire changes unless you can also speed up getting fuel into the car.
Good question. Wish I had a good answer. I'm sure if it was something that would work somebody would have thought of it by now.
Wow. No Junior questions? BTW I am a huge Jr fan. I guess people feel he is out of the running. Sadly I think he is.
Now there is a Junior comment at least. You're right. But Stewart was 24 back with five to go last year and won it all. There is still hope.
hey david are you going to party in the infield this weekand or are you going to just work in the media center all weekand at talladega LOL...
Alas, I'll be partying at the beach. Ed Hinton will be on hand for this one. Maybe you can drag him out to party with you.
First Matt Kenseth had the shock failure at Chicago, and then the track bar broke at Dover. Do you think Matt is being given shoddy equipment? He seems to think so... he's hinted as much in radio comments about how many parts are falling off his car lately.
Nope. Just bad luck.
Does JGR really care about developing drivers? To put (rumor) Sadler and Vickers in cars when you have Bubba, Truex, and Herring is ashame.
They plan to have a third car to mix in the young guys, so yes, they do care. They also like to win and feel experience gives them the best shot. Personally, I'd love to see at least one of the other cars go to a young guy like you mentioned.
I hope we dont have another fuel mileage race this sunday. Need MOAR beating and Banging.
At Dega? Beating and banging usually doesn't turn out so good.
NW crew chief for Joey.
Who is Adam Stevens? Elaborate on your answers. Not all of us are familier with the titles of the behind the scenes guys.
Sorry, put the answer before the proverbial cart so to speak. Crew chief for Joey in the NW series.
My list 1 Martinsville 2 Chicago 3dover 4 dega 5 texas 6 PIR 7 bristol 8 Texas 9 homestead 10 Daytona
You have two Texas.
Newt, speaking of young guys, when do you expect to see Chase Elliott get in a Hendrick or Jr Motorsports nationwide car? Thanks
He turns 17 next month, so at least not until the end of next year.
But Newt, young guys running a partial schedual isnt going to help
Unless it leads to a full schedule.
David, bold prediction for '14: Harvick to RFR in the 6.
That is bold.
I think the main reason why 88 has fallen a bit is Steve Letarte..I'm a diehard 24 fan, but you take a look at the last 4 yrs while he was with 24 (07-10) and those 24 teams always had speed, and led laps and run races in the first 4 months, then tailed off and were average in chase..The same things happen to 88 last 2 years..Numbers dont lie
C'mon. People were praising Letarte a few months ago. They've just been off a little. And Brad K, Jimmie Johnson and Hamlin have been extremely on. Hard to compete with those average finishes.
so who do you think will win this sunday and can who can avoid dings and dents and be a master the fuel milage cause i am sure it is going to be a fuel milage race and do you see maybe and upset aswell you thoughts...
As they say, it's a crapshoot. But I'll go with Bowyer.
yea saw that one was suppose to be charlotte.
Hey, it's 3 pm. Time to run. Thanks for all the questions. As usual, I probably had more fun than you did.
