Will Nila Kositati and JaMarkus McFarland be available for the Texas game?
It looks like Kasitati is out for the year with a torn ACL -- huge blow for an offensive line already without Tyler Evans and Ben Habern. McFarland injured his knee on that interception return, but the team expects him back at practice sometime this week. I'll know more about McFarland's status after tonight's practice.
What are your thoughts on the rise of Sterling Shepard as a part of the offense and the decline of metoyer? Any chance of moving stills back to the outside and starting Shepard in the slot?
I think it's possible we see that look more and more. This coaching staff still believes in Metoyer, though. As much as anything, he just needs a little confidence. A couple of big catches in the Cotton Bowl would do the trick.
After seeing West Virginia shred Texas with the running game, do you see any chance of a breakout game for D. Williams?
Williams has had a couple of breakout games already, but the Sooners realize they have an opportunity to establish Williams early in this game. You would think OU will lean on the run early and often, given how poor the Texas run defense has been.
Is Damien Willams carrying the load a product of his outstanding play, or Dominque Whaley still not being fully recovered from his broken ankle last season?
Combination of both. Williams has been OU's best back through 4 games. That's why he's starter and now getting the most carries.
Jake, after hearing from Stoops today, do you get the feeling we will continue to see an emphasis placed on a balanced offensive attack moving forward?
Yes, I think OU will try to remain balanced. Landry is better when the running game is clicking, and that also forces defense to play the Sooners straight.
Do you think Stacy McGee will be back for Texas?
Stoops said today that McGee would not be back.
Jake, do you think that Whitney Hand and Landry Jones are in anyway comparable to Brenda and Eddie, the popular steadies, the king and the queen of the prom? I mean they are OU's 'it' couple, but do you think their successes will go further than college, or will we be waving them goodbye, much like we did to Brenda and Eddie in the summer of '75?
Impressive Billy Joel reference.
Who will be the Quarterback for Oklahoma when Landry Jones goes to the NFL?
What should Sooner fans be more encouraged by leading into the RRR after the Texas Tech? Landry Jones gaining some rhythm and being more comfortable in the pocket? Or the defense creating turnovers? Do you think the Sooners leave the Cotton Bowl with a victory?
To the first question, Blake Bell. To the second question: You nailed it, Landry's performance. When he plays like he did at Tech, the Sooners are tough to beat. When he plays like he did against Kansas State, they are very vulnerable. My pick will be on the site Friday.
Mr Trotter. Any further questions about Landry Jones after last weekend?
Sure. Beating the eighth or ninth best team in the Big 12 is not the end all, be all of quarterbacking. This weekend is big for this season, but also his legacy. He has a chance to go 3-0 vs. the Longhorns as a starter.
How do you see the OU Texas game going next week?
While the trajectory for this game points to a high-scoring shootout, I could see the final score settling in the 20s. The Texas defense has a lot to prove and is still very talented. OU's defense is playing as well as any defense in the Big 12.
What's the injury status in McFarland, Nila, and T Jefferson?
Nila is likely out for the season with a torn ACL. McFarland has a knee injury, but not serious. Jefferson is banged up, but he should be good to go, too.
I miss the Huskers-Sooners games. Are these schools gonna play each other again sometime soon?
For the last two years, there's been talk about resurrecting the game in 2020 with a home and home. A lot of it depends on what Nebraska's Big Ten schedule ends up being that season, because OU wants the first game in Norman. I think there's a reasonably good chance they figure something out.
Will the Sooners defensive line be able to limit the Longhorn running game enough to put some pressure on David Ash?
That's a big key. You noticed that when OU started bottling up Tech's running game, that allowed the Sooners to confidently bring pressure on Doege in the pass. I think the Sooners can do it. But it's going to be a huge key in this game, as it always is.
Frank Shannon... future All-American or flash-in-the-pan?
Somewhere in the middle. He has a chance to be a very solid Big 12 middle linebacker.
Will we see more of Frank Shannon and less Tom Wort on Saturday?
That's a good question, something Mike Stoops will be asked about I'm sure tonight. I think both will play, with Shannon coming in on passing downs, and against four- and five-wide sets.
Here's a simple one: Who's not playing who should be?
Roy Finch could add some pop to this offense.
Where does OUs O-line go from here? Who is the next guy in?
Basically, they're down to Austin Woods and Ty Darlington. Woods is coming off chemo treatments, so you have to wonder about how ready he is to contribute to the rotation. Ty Darlington, a true freshman, is the other guy who'll have to step up. Darlington is a center, and Woods can play both guard and center.
I'm going to tear the OU defense apart. Can any current Sooners actually stop me? (you're welcome to answer, but we both know the answer is "no")
If any Big 12 secondary is up to the challenge, it may be Oklahoma's. Colvin, Jefferson, Hurst and even Harris have been studs so far. Then again, Alabama might be the only D capable of truly shutting down the Mountaineers, who look virtually unstoppable thus far.
Jumping a head a couple weeks, do you think that the OU defense will be able to slow down the WV offense or will the OU be able to score enough points to keep up.
I don't know that anyone in the Big 12 can keep WV under 30. Landry Jones and the offense will have to score a lot of points to give the Sooners a chance.
How many more season does Bobby Stoops have left in him before he walks away? And when he does, do I become the next head coach?
I say at least 5 years. Maybe a couple more. As for the successor, the Sooners will go one of 3 ways, depending on what happens between now and when Stoops leaves or retires. Hire Josh. Hire Mike. Or hire someone from the outside and start up a new regime.
Do you think the Sooners should limit the Belldozer package, at least early in the game, and allow Landry Jones to finish redzone drives to build confidence and rhythm?
I thought the Sooners used the Belldozer perfectly at Tech. 3-4 times a game when you really need a first down. Otherwise, leave the base offense out there so they can keep up the rhythm.
What is your opinion of Bruce Kittle... has he been a positive or a negative for the program (considering we could have hired someone with more experience)?
The jury is still out. The tight end position is not exactly a strength of this team, but Lane Johnson and Daryl Williams have played pretty well so far at tackle. Kittle needs to go out and get a difference maker at tight end, though, unless McNamara or Grissom develops into one. That's an obvious shortcoming with this offense.
While I'm encouraged by the defense there's one thing that concerns me and that is the lack of a consistent pass rush up front. I noticed Mike dialed up some blitzes with the db's and lb's and it worked against Tech but I think that could get them in trouble against Texas and particularly West Virginia. Just wondering if you agreed and is there any defensive lineman that could help create more pressure?
In a perfect world, Mike would like to get pressure with his front four and sit back in coverage. But this is not a perfect world. This is not one of OU's more dominating defensive lines in terms of pressuring the QB. I don't know that it will hurt OU much against Texas, but it will kill them against WV, since Geno Smith seemingly dices up every D that tries to blitz him.
Any shake-ups at LB postions for this weekend? Ex: Shannon replacing Wort.
Shannon and Aaron Franklin will continue to see more time. But does Shannon supplant Wort in the starting lineup this week? I'd bet no.
Millard Millard Millard. My weekly ploy for more Trey Millard.
Agreed. They finally gave the ball to him some against Tech, and he did some damage. Stoops said they wanted to get Millard 10-12 touches before the season. That's not realistic. But they can do what they did Saturday every week, and that's get Millard 3-4 carries and a couple of catches.
Does OU's secondary have the best chance in the Big 12 to slow down Geno Smith and the WV offense?
If not OU, then who? Colvin and Hurst are the type of physical corners that could give Austin/Bailey problems. Jefferson and Harris have also been very good in coverage this season, and the Sooners have other guys they can bring in like Wilson, Lynn and Shannon in nickel/dime packages.
Should opposing defenses fear David A--? ... I mean Ash...Or should they just stack up and play the run and watch for some vintage Harsin trickery?
First of all, go Reds. To your question, I don't think Ash strikes fear in the OU defense. He's better, but the Sooners are more than capable of making life tough on him. This will be the best secondary Ash has faced this season.
Hey Trotter, IT'S YO TIME!Will OU Basketball Sooners go dancing this year?
OU will be better for the third straight year, but I'm not predicting an NCAA berth. NIT would be a solid season for the Sooners, and set up a tournament run in 2013-14.
More important unit on Saturday and why - Offense or Defense?
If either plays horrible, the Sooners probably lose. The offense has been more volatile, so I guess I'll go with the offense.
Oklahoma is very thin at DT and DE. They seem to have a lot of capable LB: Tom Wort, Corey Nelson, Frank Shannon, Joe Ibiloye, and Jayden Bird. Would it be foolish for the Sooners to use more of a 3-4 defense? I just feel they have more LB and d-lineman?
Considering how Franklin and Shannon have come along, maybe that's something they look at down the line. But you want to have 4-down linemen against Texas, which runs a more traditional offense than other Big 12 schools.
Given what you've seen so far... Who wins the WVU vs. KSU game?
Game is Morgantown, so I'm probably going to pick West Virginia, unless something causes me to change my mind like WV laying an egg in Lubbock this weekend.
Just for the sake of asking, if OU runs the table from now to the end of the season, could they have a shot at the title are in your opionion did the loss to kansas state put an end to title hopes
If OU runs the table, it will be in the conversation because the schedule is so difficult. Sooners have two Top 6 teams left on the schedule, and that doesn't include Texas. I'm not sure any team in the country has a tougher remaining slate than the Sooners considering how well Notre Dame has played. The question is, can OU run the table? The chances are pretty slim.
Jake any word on Justin Manning? OU looks like DT could be a major concern in the very near future.(as early as next week). And does OU or UT get to have recruits in Dallas?
No word, but OU's chances continue to remain very strong with Manning. OU is the home team, so it's their turn to host recruits.
Can The Sooners prevent the UT D-line from smish-smashing Landry?
One key matchup will be Lane Johnson/Daryl Williams vs. Jackson Jeffcoat/Alex Okafor. I'm guessing OU will have Damien Williams chipping those guys all game.
Jake, anyway that Slick wins any post season awards other than AA and all big xii-2?
Like the Thorpe Award? Probably not. Colvin didn't have enough preseason buzz to be in the running for something like that. But he's worthy of All-American consideration, and I'm not sure there's been a better Big 12 defender thus far this season outside maybe Kansas State's Arthur Brown.
Belldozer looked good versus Texas Tech, not so good in the K-State. Are you chalking up that up to nerves? Sooners get that TD, along with Jones hitting the wide open TD, and OU is undefeated.
It didn't look good because Bell dropped the snap. As long as he holds on to the ball, the Belldozer is pretty tough to stop.
Who's closer to being right regarding the defensive talent, Chris Spielman or Bob Stoops?
If you're talking just about the defensive front, which is what Switzer was referring to, then Spielman has a point. But if you're including the secondary, then no, Spielman is not right. Jefferson and Colvin will both be playing in the NFL, and Hurst and Harris have a shot.
Alright, I admit it. Mike Stoops is a better coordinator than I am... Or did I just make a mistake by hiring Willie Martinez? Thoughts?
The proof is in the pudding.
Carolina... I'm so shaken these days that I can't even spell the name of the state I'm in.
In Brent's defense, he didn't have a lot to work when he got to Clemson. Let's see where that defense is at the end of next season.
Does Josh Heupel really deserve to be in the Bob Stoops replacement conversation given how anemic and inconsistent the offense has been under his guidance? Kevin Wilson and Sumlin have to be way ahead of him on the wish list at this point.
Well, we're not talking about him taking over in 2013. Five years down the road, who knows where Heupel will be as an offensive coordinator. It is good to see Kevin Wilson finally getting the credit he deserved as a play-caller. He constantly got a bad rap in Norman.
Any word on the suspended Players returning to the line up like Trey Franks and Jaz Renolds?
Neither will be back this week. I assume Franks will redshirt as he learns another position.
Am I the best RecruitingNation writer?
Who is the meanest looking Sooner?
Maybe Dom Whaley. He has a pretty consistent intense look.
Texas is built to wear down their opponents O-line and D-line. I feel OU is made to order.
Not sure the Texas d-line has worn out anyone yet.
The defense finally forced a few turnovers for really the first time this year against a QB who torched them last year in Norman. Did you notice anything that Mike Stoops did differently this game, scheme wise, that we can expect to see going forward?
He blitzed a LOT more, which may be the ticket going forward. Stoops would like to pressure with just his front four, but if it's choosing between not getting pressure with the front four and blitzing, Stoops is going to blitz.
Last one Jake, with the emergence of Sterling Shepard and Durron Neal starting to get some PT, when will OU get Trey Metoyer solidified? He seems to get open, but is it off timing or he running a route that LJ isnt expecting?
It's something they really worked on during the off week, but it still hasn't come together. Maybe it'll click this week. OU is not giving up on him, because they know they're going to need a downfield threat on the outside. Metoyer is talented. He just needs that game that gives him confidence.
We played tough against Michigan St. and still lost... Is there any hope or should I just go back to being a coordinator at a big school?
At least Indiana showed strides. The Big Ten is so bad this year, maybe he can pull out a couple wins.
What is your favorite ride at the Texas State Fair? Mine is riding Bevo to the slaughterhouse.
Never ridden a ride at the state fair. Too busy eating fair food and covering football games.
How great was it to see the OU offense stay with the fast pace? Loved it and could really tell it helped Landry's confidence. Thoughts?
Yes, it did. What I really liked was how they swung Millard back and forth from tight end to fullback, essentially going multiple formations without subbing. That was what made the 2008 offense so tough, and I think this year's personnel is capable of doing a little bit of that.
Can I come back please?
Sorry. Have fun with Alabama this week.
Thanks for answering my questions Jake, oh could you have Sherri Coale give me a call :)
Your welcome, and no.
Does Kendall Thompson ever see the field, and what position is he playing if/when that happens? ... And Let's Go, O's.
Kendal has an outside shot at the QB job next year, although Bell is the overwhelming favorite to succeed Landry. He would have another shot after Bell's two years, but would have to fend off Trevor Knight, who's been impressive as the scout-team QB. Kendal is quick enough to maybe play other positions, but the team still views him as a QB long-term. We'll see.
Why don't I get more snaps...especially when Landry is having a bad game? When it comes my time am I going to be experienced enough?
Because Landry is the starting QB. Had Landry stunk it up in Tech and OU lost, maybe a QB controversy would have begun to brew. But that didn't happen. You'll be a 3rd-year junior next year. You would think that would be enough experience.
Can Ash overcome last years beat down? This is a big game and Landry owns this series.
Ash very clearly is not the same QB he was last year. So yeah, he can overcome it.
Jake , I heard alot of rumbling about the RB's not being allowed to finish drives in the red zone- from of course, the fans. I know we all B**ch and moan ect ect, but I did hear some comments about possibly scaring off / discouraging Rb's. Is that just crazy talk (i know we already have sexy rb commits on board), or is there something to the angst?
Tonight, pour yourself a nice glass of scotch, put in a good movie and relax. In other words, I wouldn't worry about the Belldozer damaging OU's RB recruiting.
Who is the best overall OU assistant coach of the past 20 years?
Hard to argue against Mike Stoops.
I finished a few drives in my day... to the tune of all-time leading scorer. AND BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE!
I agree with Dustin, it's a travesty the Big XII ignored it's signature rivalry. No other major confernce did so even with expansionon. Auburn-Alabama, Michigan-Ohio State, USC-UCLA, Duke-Carolina, remained a staple play, as they should be.
One reason why was OU didn't want to play Nebraska every year when the Big 12 was being put together. Sooners have to accept blame for the deterioration of the rivalry.
Any idea why we have such a poor recruiting class so far this year and Why we haven't got many OL/DT commits?
Hard to pinpoint why the class has been a little disappointing thus far. There's still time to salvage it, but you're right, this is not going to be Stoops' highest rated class.
Jake, Are you going to wish me a belated Happy 75th Birthday?
I think I might.
Do you think OU will land another impact defender on the edge and interior in 2013?
I'm not in the business of predicting recruiting commitments, but that's a place of emphasis with this upcoming class. Justin Manning would help, should he commit.
Will the new athletic dorm have a noticeable impact on recruiting?
Stoops thinks it will. It should be up by the fall of 2013, and I guarantee it will be one of the first places the football coaches will take recruits on their official visits.
Guys, that's all the time we have. Everyone have a great Red River week, and for those of you going to the game, have a safe drive. We'll have our post-Red River chat next Monday, same time, same place.
