OK, ready to take some questions on what will surely be an entertaining game in Dallas.
Saturday loud enough for you Kenney?
Not sure who Kenney is, but yes
What 4 Nn-Conference Games will the Texas Longhorns will Play in 2012?
They only play three and have already played them unless you are counting the bowl.
Is there any news on DB Cole? Any news on A'Shawn going to FSU? Do you think that OU is making a mistake by not going after more Texas kids? It seem like they are not going after the kids Texas goes after as much more CA kids?
Cole is very elusive. So it is tough to get a read on him. A'Shawn was at the game SAturday and came away still committed to Texas.OU needs to dip more into Texas. they have started to go too national with recruiting and need to get the guys who are closer to the program.
Do you think that OU will be able to run on Texas like everyone has so far or do you think Texas can start making plays?
OU averages 190 rushing yards and Williams averages 7.8 yards per rush. Texas has allowed 211 rushing yards in last four games. That's my answer.
do you see Texas going after a few high 4 star & 5 star kids in LA over the next few years with LSU having problems inside the program?
No. They will stick with Texas first and then recruit certain athletes from other states.
Do you think the Texas defense was only good last year because they had starters who were recruited and coached my Muschamp?
No I think the guys they have now are very good and they were recruited by Muschamp too. But Texas is young at LB and that is what has hurt the most.
Is this team still a national title contender in 2013-14?
Yes. Texas has played 33 freshmen in the past two years. They are young and talented.
Tough loss, will the Horns have any Hangover from it? Ash had another good game, how well we he and the rest of the crew have to play? Is OU a better match up for the D than WV was? Thanks Carter.
The issues is that OU is feeling pretty good about itself after going to Tech and getting three picks and a solid win.I think Texas knows it was in the WVU game and took some good things from it. But the defense has to tackle.
I want to see less Joe B. touches and more J. Gray, D.J., & Daje. Thoughts?
Gray should get a few more. But Bergeron softens a defense so they lie to use him between the tackles.
I thought the players played well enough to win - no beef there. To me it seemed both Harsin & Diaz struggled in their strategic adjustments - or lack thereof. Even though we put up points, it seems we could have done more in the passing game early - rather than run the power sets that didn't seem to gain many yards.
They didn't want to go tot he passing game because of the quick drives. Those would have resulted in WVU getting the ball right back and scoring. So Texas had to balance things. The first drive of the second half - 7:31 time elapsed -- was the perfect drive for Texas. The issue was the botched snap and the inability of the D to stop fourth downs.
Doesn't Rose have the leg to kick it out of the endzone? According to Mack, he has done so on 11 out of 40 kicks - if memory serves me it seems almost half have been sky kicks or squibs. This means he is closer to 50% when attempting to kick out of the endzone. After watching KO coverage struggle again this past week, I'd tell him to let it rip everytime and let'em have the ball at the 25!!
His leg is not what they thought it was apparently. And there were some wind issues Saturday.
Does the commitment of ATH Collins yesterday allow the coaching staff some flexibility going forward - being that he can likely play either WR or DB? Does it help or hurt chances with some of the current offers (ie Luke, Harris)?
I think he will play DB and it does not hurt one bit. Clearly Texas needs DBs.
How has OU's O line performed recently? I know this was a major concern for them coming into the season with Landry Jones (and his lack of mobility) at QB. I don't know much about the OU Defense, but I see the Texas D line vs. OU O line as the largest advantage either team will have (Texas Advantage).
OU has given up an average of two sacks per game. Texas has averaged 3.7 sacks in the last three games. Advantage Texas.
It seems to be a competitive advantage that Oregon is allowed to receive a new uniform every game in the form of a corporate donation from Nike. NCAA has allowed Nike to in effect own a college football team and to sponsor them. I am thinking it may make sense to rename them the Nike Ducks of Oregon (would be more fitting).I am not sure how the NCAA can justify this form of sponsorship as it seems like Oregon receives free benefits other programs do not have access to
Hey, boosters are allowed to spend money on teams. Texas plays at Joe Jamail field. It just so happens Oregon's best booster runs a shoe company.
What's your best estimate for how the rest of the season plays out for the Longhorns? Does the defense (especially the secondary and LB play) stiffen up? Will be see the passing game truly open up?
I think Texas has a chance to be unbeaten the rest of the way. Picked it 10-2 at the start of the season and still think that is an accurate pick.
Worst case/best case/most likely for Texas?
11-1Realistic 10-2Worst 8-4
if you had to guess right now, what side of the ball do you see the new commit collins playing?
Okafor and Jeffcoat are doing a pretty good job in the pass rush, but how are they doing against the run? The past two weeks, Texas' opponents are just running through huge lanes, often not getting touched until the reach the secondary. Is it just me, or does it seem like Okafor and Jeffcoat are often running themselves out of the play, resulting in many of those holes.
I think it is more on the backers. Those guys are funneling the RBs into the right place and the backers are not making the plays.
over/under 60% chance Hicks returns to play against ou this weekend?
The Longhorn defense has underacheived this season and played below expectations? Do you think Mack Brown rights the ship this week in the RRR?
No doubt. They are getting gashed left and right and simply cannot tackle.I think the defense will be better this week but some of that might have to do with the fact that the OU offense is not as good as OSU and wVU.
Are you more concerned this week, than last, after watching Landry Jones appear to get in sync with his wide receivers? And the Longhorns defense being torched the second week in a row?
Not really because Tech is not a good defense I don't care if Tech is the second ranked defense in the nation. They are not great.
Mr Carteer, remember when the Big 12 used to talk smack about Big East teams? Is it bittersweet inviting WV into the conference?
It was actually spelled Kotter. B12 is deeper. But top teams can hang with anyone.
This run left, run right, 3rd and and long cannot be good for a young offense. Hopefully things open up a bit more this weekend. Your thoughts?
A lot of that had to do with trying to keep WVU off the field. Texas had 135 rushing yards which is well below average for them. Missing Brown hurts some and I do not think he will go this week.
after losing to wvu the way they did, do you thinks Texas is more likely to end up at 10-2 or 8-4?
10-2 maybe 9-3
I'm gonna be in Dallas this weekend and have never been to the RRR. Is there anyway I can get tickets? How much do scalped tickets go for?
Ticketcity is based in austin and always has tickets.
Carter, whatdo you think is the toughest stadium to play at in the Big 12?
I have not been to Morgantown. I would say ISU just because everyone hates that trip. KSU is not great either. But by and large, the B12 does not have every intimidating stadiums.
Any work on M. Brown (RB) being able to suit up this weekend?
I don't think so. He is not walking yet.
Carter. True or False: Texas and Kansas St. will be playing Dec. 1 in Manhattan for a BCS At-Large bid.
Wow, great one. If Texas wins this week, yes.
I was asked about UT defense. This is from ESPN stats: Texas is allowing more than 6 yards per play on defense. That would be the second highest average in program history. Texas has never finished with a winning record when it has allowed more than 5.3 yards per play.
how did Texas like the WV fans
I think they appreciated how the WVU fans traveled. There was some scuttlebutt over the recruits inner action with Geno and the gang. But that is what college football is about.
Carter- Do you think Thompson replacing Phillips is the right move? Also D.J. Monroe was producing against OSU and he barely touched the ball against WVU, what gives?
I do think Thompson is the guy you have to go with. Better athlete and he gets to the ball.As for DJ, they claim that they were not on the right hash to get him the ball when they wanted to get him the ball. Not sure I buy it.
How much of the blame is on the linebackers and how much is on Diaz for not putting them in a situation/playcall/formation to succeed? In my opinion, Diaz needs to know the abilities of his personnel and call plays/formations accordingly.
The blame for not being able to tackle is on the entire defensive staff. Players need to be coaches in the fundamentals and for the Texas staff not to have those type of athletes int he position to make plays and making lays is a failure on their part. The defenses entire job is to tackle. It's what they do.
If that is true then Texas' trend of Holiday, BCS, NC Game might hold true. Gotta win this weekend, though.
Right they have done that twice before and it does shape up that way this year.
is there a "deadline" for redshirting, and if so is it coming up? which freshmen do you see using a redshirt?
They have played 15 freshmen and will not play any others unless there is a significant injury. They played 18 freshmen last year.
Are you looking to hire me as a prognosticator after asking before week 1 if the Texas D was overrated? (to which you responded "no")
I wish. Clearly I have whiffed on the Texas D much like the Texas D whiffs on running backs.
WV defense is weak and that is why they will not play for nc .
Possible but the offense is so good that they can simply outscore people. And that defense only gave up 38 to Texas. Seven was scored by the defense. If they can hold teams to under 40 they are going to win a lot of games.
With the defense struggling this year. Do you see Diaz's stock going down and him staying at least another year?
Exactly the conversation I had with some guys Monday. Plus there are not going to be any great jobs open this year. At least that is the way it looks.
I liked what I saw for most ot the game against WVU. Our defense wasnt very good, but WVU is likely the best offense we will face. I also agree with your responses regarding ball control offense vs WVU. I do see us opening up the playbook a bit against OU. If you were coach for the day, whats the one type of play you would like to run frequently against the OU defense?
Whatever play puts the ball in Daje's hands. Really i think Texas needs to stick with the same plan and use play action. Also be ready for some hot reads. Mike Stoops is going to want to blitz and Ash has been very good against that this year -- 58 percent completion. So Texas needs to stretch sideline to sideline with Daje, hit up the middle with Bergeron and then go lay action. Sounds so simple.
Wow the ball wasn't on the right hash? I'm with you Carter that answer sounds like it came from Mack Brown's school of BS. If you put on the OSU film he ran over some of there linebackers, not sure they've been of fond of him ever since he arrived on the 40 acres.
Well, he admitted that he did not know the playbook in his first few years. But he did not do track this spring to concentrate on football. Thought that was a good sign. Then he scored a TD in every game leading up to WVU. But they forgot about him against WVU plain and simple.
Give me your non-bias views on USC Trojans football and Lan kiffin.
I have no biases. They are very good for how thin they are. But this is a Texas chat.
Do you see the ability to run between the tackles increasing? Runs outside and sweeps seem to work okay but we've struggled some between the tackles
Brown was good at that too and i think the changeup between Bergeron and Brown cannot be underestimated. That really kept defenses guessing and they do not have to do that as much with Brown out.
Who's the next big Texas commit?
Thanks for the great response. Please call Mack. We really Need Djae and DJ to get more touches. Saw the response earlier, but you think Hicks is going to play?
I do think he will play. He was running some on Sunday and that is a good sign. He will not be back to 100 percent but at least at 70 percent he should be able to get 30 or 40 plays in on defense. That might calm down the rest of the backers too.
Do you think OU has to turn Texas over like it did last year to win on Saturday?
Yes. And i think Texas is much better at protecting the ball. Texas is plus seven on TOs. OU is minus 2.
Is Mack Brown done coaching and just a "figure head" a la JoePa?
No. He gets in there and mixes it up. But he does let his coordinators coach.
Looks like we might be out of questions for this week. If you have any other questions you can hit us up on the forum at HornsNation. William and Max have all the recruiting info over there too.
